This has been our best kept secret bakery for several years . Love the sourdough bread, try to buy it weekly comes unsliced. Pastries, cinnamon rolls, croissants are a favorite to pick up in morning. The sandwiches are outstanding! You might want to order 1/2 unless really hungry. See complaints about lack of more bread choices. This is a small home town bakery that seems to do an amazing variety of baked goods, so we are so happy to have it in our neighborhood. I grew up in LA, so am very acquainted with bakeries of many kinds. With new river front housing, I fear they will not be able to keep up. My daughter and I went here for breakfast when I was visiting her at WOU in nearby Monmouth. It was a charming little place with great service and delicious pastries. My daughter had the apple cinnamon roll which had chunks of real apples in it and I had the raisin cinnamon roll which was also scrumptious. Sandwiches are good. Made on their house made bread of your choice . I order half a sandwich if you want something added to your sandwich you are charged the whole sandwich price . The highlight of Main Street Independence in my eyes. I had the luxury of living just down the street from this bakery over the summer and can I say yum?!?!!! I can't get enough of their pastries, especially their almond bear claw. This little bakery is a gem in an up and coming area of Independence. I have been visiting Ovenbird for several years and it only gets better with time. I have had multiple sandwiches and their various breads sour dough, wheat and focaccia- all have been delicious. They serve great coffee at a good price and delicious soups, pastries and cookies. The owner is so kind and polite and she is willing to accommodate any order she can. I have ordered several dozen iced cookies from their place and have been delighted every time. I have taken home their frozen pizza dough both regular and gluten free and it is an easy way to make a great pizza. I am really impressed with the service and staff along with the relaxed atmosphere without trying to be overly trendy. I like the interior exposed brick it makes you feel cozy and want to stay for awhile! I only wish they were open 7 days a week instead of Tues-Sat but I applaud them for taking their well deserved rest. Will definitely be a customer as long as the doors are open! read more

Up early in Independence is a little rough if you're looking for a cup of coffee and pastry! Stumbled upon Ovenbird Bakery while walking through town before 7am. Friendly staff, delicious smells, and great pastries and quiche. Our favorite were the almond croissant - almond paste all the way through the entire croissant, and the feta, tomato, pepperoncini quiche. Delicious! Wishing we found this gem yesterday when we arrived as they are only open M-S 6:30a-2:30p. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

Ovenbird catered our modest sized memorial service and it couldn't have been better! The bread for the sandwiches was full of flavor, but the fillings were also fresh and creative. Been getting bread, danish, and sandwiches for about 2 years now, so a review is warranted. This is one of my all time favorite places. Walking into the bakery gets you a lovely hit of aroma therapy from the fresh bread. The sourdough, wheat, focaccia, and rye are all super tasty and are made with natural, local ingredients which make the best sandwiches. The pastry section, with its danish, cinnamon rolls, hand pies, cookies, etc, are perfect little deserts which will delight the taste buds. Katie, the baker and owner, makes specialty items to order for parties, celebrations, etc. The quiches, both regular and gluten free, are delicious. The sandwiches are made to order, fresh, just they way you like. The service has always been friendly and most pleasant, even when there's a rush and multiple people are all trying to put their order in at the same time. I love to sit and have coffee, just watching the people and smelling the treats coming out of the oven. It's a nice, light, friendly little space that is perfect for a coffee and turnover on a rainy day. Absolutely no down side. We just moved to the area and have been here twice. Both times we had lunch, but ended up taking goodies home. Their soup is made from scratch and delicious! We had sandwiches trying both the sourdough and the baguette...both stars in their own rite! We also took quiche, pastries and carrot cake for later; always delighted in our choices! The marionberry and peach Danishes are awesome, also love the cinnamon rolls (with or without raisins- both are great). Many of the quiches have a sliced potato crust which is also very good. Cute little bakery and a wonderful addition to Independence. We have a no gluten family member and can always find something delicious for her, which is great. Their prices are very reasonable and the quantities are generous. I haven't had lunch here, but do enjoy getting an afternoon pastry once in a while. So far their gluten free almond cake and normal croissants have been a highlight. I don't know if the place has wifi, but it would be a great cafe to study at for local area college students if they do. read more
