This was our first time at the new(er) location and I was a little nervous based on some of the reviews. I am so glad we decided to go for it and see for ourselves. First, Kai was fantastic! Every request we had was met with "sure, we can do that". The food was excellent! We went a little overboard and ordered just about everything. The pancakes and the dipped chicken were the stars following closely behind were the bacon (thick and fresh) and the gravy! Everything was well seasoned and so fresh! The okra was just as good as we remembered but I feel that's a given :) The brunch menu was the perfect size for me; enough choices but not so many that I was overwhelmed with decisions - more than 2 pages and I take more time making a decision than eating... Dined here over the weekend for dinner. We had reservations, they didn't seem to be needed. Sat us at a small table for two shoved in the corner. We ordered drinks which were good but I also ordered an unsweetened ice tea which was wrong when it finally arrived. Took a good bit of time for the replacement to arrive too. The inattentive-ness continued throughout the evening. Waitress took food orders from two tables that arrived after we did. We finally got to order food around 30-40 minutes after arriving. Just after we ordered another couple was seated at the table next to us. Same waitress delivered their food within 15 minutes of arriving. One dish was the same as our order, the trout. We waited another 10-15 minutes for our food to be served. Order consisted of the aforementioned trout, an entree salad, and a side of fingerling potatoes. So nothing that should have delayed the meal. Our food was prepared well and we enjoyed our dishes but the ambience and the service really took a lot away from our experience. We had been to Over Yonder several times at their old location and always enjoyed it. Whether it was the food, the setting, or the overall experience, it felt like a special place to dine. We recently tried the Boone location in the motel, and unfortunately, it just didn't have the same feel. The menu seemed much more limited than we remembered, and overall, the food was pretty basic. I had the meatloaf, and my wife had a salad with fried chicken. To be fair, there was nothing wrong with either meal, but nothing really stood out either. Everything was fine, just a bit bland and not especially memorable. Would we go back? Probably not. Again, nothing was bad, but compared to our past experiences, this visit felt limited and lacked the charm and flavor that made the old location so enjoyable. The service also was a little bit slow and disjointed, even though they were not busy at all at the 5 o'clock time when we stopped. To those about to nosh, good luck! If you're anywhere near Boone, do yourself a favor and go to Over Yonder. This place is exactly what you want a mountain restaurant to be, charming and cozy, with food that is amazing. We started with the smoked steelhead trout hoecake and the skillet okra, and honestly, I could have stopped right there and been happy. The trout was silky and smoky, piled on top of this perfect little hoecake with the right amount of sweetness. Pretty sure it's cooked in bacon fat and the pecans were a crunchy hit. The okra, lightly charred and served with a bright dipping sauce, was so good we kept saying "one more" and then reaching for another. For dinner, I had the pork osso buco special with charred broccolini and grits, and it was out of this world. Pure comfort, and cooked to perfection. The meat fell apart with the touch of a fork, the sauce was deep and rich, the grits were creamy, and the broccolini brought just enough char to balance everything out. My husband went classic with the chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans, and it was exactly what that dish should be. Crispy, tender, smothered in gravy, the whole thing was just honest, well-done comfort food. We kept arguing on whose was better. The service was wonderful, warm without being overbearing, and the whole vibe of the place is adorable. We were probably the only no -locals there and it was packed for a good reason! After a long drive to Boone, I needed a walk & a drink. Over Yonder was a 15 minute walk and perfect for a drink. They make a very nice old fashion. Enjoyed the potato & brocollni soup with a grilled cheese. Comfort food on a snowy day. The pimento cheese appetizer is delicious. I love the mid-modern look of this place. Groovy. We were a fan of Over Yonder when they were at their old location.. food and ambiance were always spot on. We have eaten at the new location a few times now and each time we have been quite disappointed overall. I wanted to give them one more chance but sadly our last experience was not much better. The new location has lost its charm. You are basically eating in a hotel lobby /bar area, like one would have a hotel breakfast. Not inviting to me. Service was ok but once our food was served ( not by the waitress) we realized there was no salt or pepper on the table. It took about 15 mins before we could flag down our waitress. Was hoping the salt & pepper would have helped the very bland pepper Jack mac n cheese, it did not. It was just basically noodles with zero flavor. Trout was good but cole slaw was not tasty and the veggie of the day sounded really elegant but was just basically sautéed squash, again with no seasoning or flavor. Trout came with fingerling potatoes but got sweet potatoes instead. The griddled meatloaf was good but was on the cold side we also ordered their Expresso Martini special and it was the size of a thimble. Yes, it was only $5 but was still expecting a regular sized drink since it was not advertised as being smaller. I'm really not particular but have been expecting a better meal and experience overall for the price like we use to have at the old location. Sadly, I doubt we will return. read more

Overrated description of the view outside-it's of a parking lot. One table of people outside when we arrived at 6:30 on a SATURDAY evening and a few tables inside but plenty of open tables. We were asked if we had a reservation to which we replied no and were then told we had a 45 minute to an hour wait because there were only 2 servers in the whole restaurant. Can't speak to the taste but of the few plates I saw, did not look worth the $/wait so we left. read more

This place came highly recommended. But we would likely not return. I think it's odd they only offer eggs two ways and you can't get them scrambled. But they do make it clear so you can't fault them. The waffles were not fluffy but more dense. The fried chicken sandwich was good but the gouda grits were probably my favorite of all the food we tried. Delicious! Finally tried this place out and it was wonderful. The waitress was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. My wife and I both went with the chicken fried chicken and it was not a bad choice at all. Not overly breaded but still had a nice crunch. The sawmill gravy on top was a nice addition as well. Served with real mashed potatoes and green beans which were both great. We also had the espresso martini which was tiny but only $5. Great ambiance and a really cool sitting area. Over Yonder is definitely worth a try if you're visiting the High Country! We will be back. read more

We've been to your new location now about 4 times vs about 20 at the old house...and the food is every bit as delicious as it was at Valle Crucis (sp?)...!! Still wonderful.. BUT.......YOU HAVE TO DO ONE SINGLE THING...PLEEEEEASE!!! We are begging you in all seriousness....!! Please bring back the bread you had at the old house!!!! That bread was SO SO WONDERFUL...!!!Go ahead & charge outrageously for it...You have one customer who will pay....We really miss it & keep thinking and hoping the NEXT time we come, you will be serving it. The Mrs and I came here tonight just to have a simple burger to split. It's a beautiful place and very clean with very nice view depending on your table. We had the appetizers of the pimento cheese and the frog legs. Both were terribly underwhelming. We ordered the Steak of the day to split, but unfortunately had to split before we could eat it. The waitress who waited on us was wonderful. The server who brought our food out, did not clear other plates and glasses at our fairly small table, so I moved them over to the table next to us that was empty so that the server could place the plates down . The same thing occurred when our entrées were brought out, and as I was moving more plates and glasses out of the servers way so that she could put the entrée down, the hostess came up to us and began to chastise us for putting our plates on the table next to us. As I was trying to explain that our table was small and we had lots of space taken up that the server needed to place the food down, she chastises in even a harsher voice that "every time I did that, she had to come and wipe that portion of the table down again". As I was trying to explain once again, she became even ruder. When our waitress came back, I explained the situation and indicated that we would like to just box up our entrée , get the check, and leave. The waitress brought the manager over who initially tried to defend her hostess until I re-explained the situation and the words & tone that we got back from the hostess. All I've heard is how amazing the food is at Over Yonder. Finally I took my mother and father out for her bday. My drive by review is Over Yonder is far Over Rated.... Staff was friendly so that's a plus! I had the chicken fried chicken which was great chicken, good green beans and terrible mashed potatoes. Also the tasteless white gravy was a crime.. My fathers Flatiron pork had a great taste but you could hardly chew it.. I thought he was exaggerating until I tried it. The gouda grits might have been good if they were not served cold. Mom had potato and broccolini soup, it was ok but won't change your life... Her mean green bowl salad was ok, toppings, like sweet potato cubes had very little flavor. Convenient location, parking was a little iffy. Mid-century ambience and the seating area was just not great. Not particularly cozy. It was overall good but some details were lacking - the benches are hard without cushions and that's not particularly comfortable for an hour-long meal. The service was slow tonight, including waiting for food and drink refills. The waitress did acknowledge and thank us for our patience and said they were busier than usual, which I appreciated. The appetizers were the best part. The okra dish was unique and very good. Needs two wedges of lemon, not one. The sourdough was also delicious and a unique flavor. We got the meatloaf meatballs for our entree and they were tender and tasty but quite spicy; spicier than they should have been for zero mention of it on the menu, and it took away from my ability to enjoy the meal. It would be significantly better if it was more of a brown sugar and ketchup caramelized topping instead of spicy/BBQ/A1 sauce. Of course, this depends on your taste. The mashed potatoes were meh, pretty bland. The food is just nowhere near good enough to put up with the condescending, miserable wretch of a hostess that we had to deal with. Servers were no better. I've had friends quit working at Over Yonder because their co-workers were such deplorable people. If you do eat here, please just tip the kitchen staff and not the waitress and be ready to get in a fight with the trashy hostess. Go to Rooted on King. Go to Mint. Go to Tasty Halal. Go to Reids. Go to Peppers. All way better options where they hire actual professionals. If you're the owner reading this, get rid of the awful hostess and hire someone with some basic manners and people skills. AAAbsolute pits. Loud highway noise. In a cheap hotel. Homeless guy with diarrhea asked me to watch his stuff while he went to the can. His girl asked us to pay their motel bill with our credit card if she gave us the cash. Manager and one of the waitstaff were nice. The rest surly. The "spectacular salad" was ground up lettuce sprinkled with cheese. They tell you up front that meat dishes are only cooked medium well. I ordered a different kind of salad and got french fries. Worst wine pour in Watauga county (maybe 5oz?). Great place to take the dogs for lunch. They will have plenty to eat. read more

Full disclosure, I did not eat at this restaurant. My husband and I fought for a parking spot and then went in to see the hostess. She barely looked at us, saying "one minute" as she slowly ripped receipts from a machine. Another hostess came up, finally acknowledging us and told us that despite our reservation, we needed to wait another 10 minutes. We waited two and I realized very quickly how noisy and unacknowledged I felt. We decided to bail. This place is definitely for tourists, not locals like us. read more
