We had reservations Saturday evening at 6:15. As we were seated, hostess told us they needed our table back by 7:45. Extremely unprofessional and tacky. No one wants to be rushed at dinner. We would have ordered dessert and after-dinner drinks, resulting in more money for restaurant and server, but we were too rushed. We will not be back and this was one of our favorite restaurants. This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to an 1861 historical house in Valle Crucis, NC, to Over Yonder, An Appalachian Kitchen. This picturesque house has had many different uses over the years but I think this may be the best one yet. Dora here. The owners added on over the years, but the left side is original. Stunning, isn't it? We were seated in the front right room, the added-on side. Can you guess why we called this the game room? That's right. Old fashioned games hung from every wall. I chose the Potlikker Gumbo, loaded with chicken, andouille, ham and okra in a brown broth of collard greens and blanketed with jasmine rice. The gumbo was outstanding without being spicy, hardy, and the perfect choice for a cold day in the mountains. All of the ingredients mingled together to form one tasty bowl of goodness. The Roasted Okra appetizer drew my attention when I first looked at the menu. Being from the south, I have had okra cooked just about every way possible, but never roasted. Let me just say, this has to be some of the best tasting okra I have ever had. The okra is cut in half, roasted until soft and then flashed fried until crispy. I would recommend this dish to anyone who visits this restaurant. Which I did, actually, as we were leaving. Dora here. Before the food came out, I teased hubby that he'd be eating this okra by himself. I like fried okra, but roasted? Not in a million years would I like it prepared this way. Well, let me just tell you, the joke was on me. This okra was delicious! And my hand kept straying to his side of the table, swiping a delectable goodie whenever he wasn't looking. haha. Now on to mine...the OY Pork Burger should be called the Oh My Pork Burger! Messy, but packed with flavor! Good to the last bite, I even scooped up the overflow because I didn't want to miss any ounce of the awesome flavor! Ground pork topped with smoked Gouda and a wonderfully intoxicating slaw...divine! Kind of like a chilled sauerkraut, but in the very best way, adding a whole new dimension and texture to the sandwich. And, oh my stars, those pickles! The chips were salted with rosemary, giving them a zesty bite. YUM, YUM, YUM! There was nothing left on any of these plates! We might've licked them...lol. Amazing food. For once, I put my phone down while on vacation with my family in the mountains, and even without Yelp's guidance I managed to stumble into Over Yonder with my husband and two rambunctious boys for an impromptu lunch between visiting Mast and heading down to the Linville Caverns. I was IMPRESSED! First of all, I've never had such a "foodie" place that still catered to children so well, but they made it very easy for us to do something that's not so easy: enjoy fancy food with young kids in tow. They played with other kids in the front yard, colored, and sitting outside allowed them the freedom to be loud and antsy without disturbing others. The boys split the homemade sloppy joe kids meal (and homemade applesauce) and it was so tasty my husband said he would order it if he could. I LOVE that the kids can choose ANY side for their meal...some kids are foodies and may want to try the collards (my vegetable-hating 7 YO usually loves collards) or they can choose fries or applesauce if they are less adventurous. EVERYTHING is homemade, so even choosing traditional kid-friendly items makes you feel like you are feeding your family wholesome food. I had the Bamb burger (would have chosen the Pork burger if they had it) from the lunch menu, and it was delicious. Not healthy, but delicious. Perfectly toasted, buttery bun, homemade curry mayo, juicy lamb burger: could have maybe used just a BIT more toppings, but not much to complain about! My husband ordered the quiche and soup of the day and both were delicious! Kudos to the person who wrote the menus and their sense of humor: I LOVED the Dumb&Dumber reference! This was one of those cases where I could have easily picked anything off the menu and it would have been fantastic. We chose to not have alcohol or drinks this meal, which kept our bill very reasonable! The only reason it's not 5-star is that they were out of 3 of the things we wanted to order. We wanted something close to where we were staying and Over Yonder had good Yelp reviews so we gave it a shot. Wife had soup and salad and I had the OY Porkburger. Delicious food and good service. Though it will give you a heart attack since so much of it is fried or buttered in some (every?) way. The dishes we had were dripping in butter or salted a bit much. Not much healthy on the menu aside from salad. Having grown up in NC I suppose that's true to form, but change needs to start somewhere...and I'd love to see chefs try to lead some of that change. Overall very tasty, but we needed a detox afterwards. Don't miss the okra, the homemade pimiento cheese (served with fried bread of course) and the baked buttered bread! We came in thanks to the reviews on Yelp after spending the afternoon tubing at hawks nest. We were not disappointed--the food was as good as described! We arrived as a group of 10 (6 tweens and teens, 4 adults), and were seated in the back dining room. Most of the kids got the burger and all gave it a big thumbs up. Even my 11 year old daughter who tends to be picky finished almost the whole thing. They really enjoyed the pork chips that came as a side--they were so well-seasoned and perfectly crisp. One chose the grilled cheese which did not disappoint--they do not skimp on the cheese and the bread is like Texas toast. My friend described her Emaline salad as one of the best salads she's ever had. I ordered the tomato cobbler with the soup of the day (pumpkin bisque with cumin and coriander) on the side. The cobbler was filled with chunks of tomatoes in a flavorful sauce and topped with a cheesy biscuit--it was wonderfully seasoned and so fresh tasting! The soup was outstanding: rich and thick and the seasonings were very light. The men and my son all chose the chicken-fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. The chicken was very moist and the coating was nicely crispy. The mashed potatoes are the kind with the skins on, and were garlicky. Over Yonder was one of the best meals we ate while visiting the high country. Our B and B owners highly recommended the restaurant and made a reservation for us for their favorite table. The staff was really nice and the old house was beautiful. When you sit down they give you a history of the place. They keep it casual and prices are reasonable. We heard good things about the pimento cheese and got that for the appetizer. It was so delicious. The fry bread makes it special and the chowchow on top was to die for. I could have eaten a bowl of it by itself. For my entrée I had their meatloaf with sweet potato casserole and butter beans. I did not like the butter beans because of too much pepper but the sweet potato casserole was excellent. It was not too sweet and had a good crunch from the nuts. The meatloaf was fantastic. They put it on the griddle to give it a crust and the cheerwine sauce was super yummy. My husband had the tomato pie and mac and cheese. I am not a huge mac and cheese fan but I loved theirs. It is very cheese but not dry. He liked the tomato pie. You need to get dessert here. I had their banana pudding and it was some of the best I have ever had. They serve it parfait style with a crunch crumble and homemade whipped cream. I would come here again just for that. Over Yonder is off the beaten path but well worth a trip. read more

LOVED this place. My favorite restaurant in the area. The place is located in a home that is on the National Historic registry. It's amazingly charming. The menu is varied and interesting. A lot of neat influences here. My first visit I had a pot roast sandwich that was incredible. Pot roast, blue cheese infused slaw, and home pickled banana peppers. All served with housemade potato chips dipped in pork fat and seasoned with rosemary. Unreal. The service was outstanding. On both our visits we had Justus take care of us. Loved the Mast Farm Inn restaurant for years, so glad to have a second, less upscale cousin right down the street. Pimento Cheese appetizer is amazing. Grit skillet dinners are an interesting twist in cast iron cooking, while the chicken fried chicken is delicious - even without the gravy. Sides are not an after thought, but yummy in their own right, and there is a nice varied selection. Desserts can be hit or miss. A far higher quality meal than menu prices would suggest. Reservations taken. Service is good without being obtrusive. The one downside is noise level. Many groups of friends / family made our conversation a bit difficult. We did not have a reservation but they set up a table for us on the porch and we only had to wait a couple of minutes. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The food? Well, it was so-so. My mother and I ate here while visiting the High Country, and we had a nice time. We had an early dinner at Over Yonder (5:30-6pm). I made reservations because I always do that when I travel, but it was unnecessary for an early week-night dinner. The spot itself is a beautiful home-style restaurant in Valle Crucis, and relatively easy to access from Boone and Banner Elk. The hosts and servers were local students (it was also the late summer time, so I'm not sure how that shifts during other seasons), and everyone was thoughtful, courteous, and personable. The food itself was pretty good, hence the 4/5 stars. The selection is traditional "country" or southern food (trout, meat loaf, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, etc.), and we enjoyed the experience over all. I had the grilled meatloaf and sides and my mother had the chicken-fried chicken with sides. I deducted a star because, as someone who is very familiar with preparing, cooking and eating traditional southern foods, the seasonings/depth of flavor were a bit lacking for me, and the selection felt a little restricted. Still, the service was awesome, and we enjoyed ourselves. If you're able to splurge, get a few things from each part of the menu (appetizer, entree, dessert), and share with your table. I think I would have appreciated the experience more, had I an opportunity to try more menu items at once. Nevertheless, definitely check this place out if you're in the area and support a local business. read more
