What a great find about 3/4-1 mile from Mast General Original Location in Valle Cruces. Beautiful little home converted with the cutest little shop next door. The Host Staff, our Server Paxton, Beth The Shop Manager were all wonderful and the food was awesome and very fresh especially the salads and greens. The wife had the soup but someone over did it with the dollop of sour cream and it became more a sour cream soup and was not as hot as it could be. All in all it was very good and we will return. I love it when a place has a small menu...and executes. This place is country simple-great. Noteworthy: Don't go here and not order the Okra. The okra is split lenghtwise, and I believe it is baked or broiled rather than fried. I know it sounds like a dangerous deviation toward healthy that will fall a far second to a typical fry. NOT. How good is it? When I was walking out, I went over to the register and orded the okra for a couple that was sitting next to us. I have no idea who they were. However, I noticed that they had considered the okra, but did not order it. We have dined hear multiple times and have never been disappointed. read more

The home feel extends throughout as you're greeted by a friendly hostess and awesome waitresses. Great service all around. I loved the hanging plants and vintage board games as wall art. The drink menu consisted of a great variety of spirits and a couple nice beers. The black lager $4 was awesome. Our entrees, pork burger was amazing $13 with their homemade chips. Tons of great flavors. The Emaline salad with added grilled shrimp was beautiful and fresh. The fried okra $9 was a favorite too, awesome sauce! After eating we stopped at the market next door, on the property, to shop. Incredible pottery crafted by the chef's wife I believe, local meats and produce, and beautiful gifts. So because of COVID there is a very limited menu and you order inside of the small market ordering area. We sat in one of the few seating areas and after a short wait our sandwiches were brought out. I was impressed at the quality of size of the sandwiches. The BLT and the pimento sandwich were our entries along with jalapeño chips we ordered in the market. All were delicious and worth it. It was first visit a few weekends ago to Over Yonder but it will not be my last! I love the location. The house with all the rooms is such a great place for a restaurant. It's super cozy and I loved the whole vibe. I ordered the burger special which was so good. Local beef cooked perfectly on a super great roll. My mashed potato side was really good and I was sad when I finished it. Other folks in our group ordered the tomato basil soup and the collard side. They all enjoyed their food as well. The real star of our lunch was the fried okra!! I have never had okra cooked like that before and it was amazing. I would definitely order that again and I'd probably order it as my entree. From pork cheek spring rolls and roasted eggplant with toasted chickpea soup as appetizers, to dinners of chicken fried chicken, shrimp and grits, NC breaded trout with baby sweet potatoes with molasses, to the grilled meatloaf, each and every dish was perfect melding of flavors. For dinner I ordered the chicken fried chicken breast served w/mash potatoes and collards. LOVE collards & these were delicious with just the right amount of bacon and seasonings. Boo got the Shrimp & Grits and I have to say they were the best I've ever had! These folks know how to cook Southern food! YUMMY! This is a MUST do when your in the neighborhood. Boo ordered the Chocolate Chess Pie for dessert, we got it with a side of the salted Caramel chocolate ice cream! OMG! Heaven! He had never even heard of chess pie & now it's his favorite, warm, light but rich enough for great flavor. Get it!! This was our second time here. The first time was in May when we were visiting & the lunch on the patio was so delightful that we had to return. It was very different this time since it was cold at night in December. Excellent experience at Over Yonder! My friend and I had just explored Grandfather Mountain and drove over to Sugar Grove to have a nice meal at Over Yonder. The area is so cute. The restaurant is in an old farm house with a lovely southern porch, complete with giant ferns and outdoor dining. A garden surrounds the house and it is beautiful! The unpaved parking lot had plenty of space. My friend made us a reservation prior, but we arrived a bit early. They were able to seat us no problem. The service was prompt, our server even recommended an appetizer and some delicious salads. The food was amazing! Even my fresh lemonade was divine! We got the okra as an appetizer and it was yummy. We both got the "Emaline" salad and it was incredible, too. The greens were fresh and the dressing was the perfect compliment. Service was quick and attentive; I believe her name was Tessa. A very sweet girl who was super helpful in guiding us through the menu. The inside of the restaurant was darling. Every table had a fresh flower and it had the old southern home feel; warm and inviting. Atmosphere is very rustic. If you like food with a Southern flair, you will like this place. I'm not big on Southern cooking , but that's me. I had the trout the first time I was there. The trout was breaded (as most of the items are at this restaurant ). I was OK with that because I think breaded is the best way to eat trout. However, they placed the trout on top of a vinegar based cole slaw which buried the taste of the trout. If I order it again, I will either have them omit it or place it on the side. Service was good. It is an historic building and I recommend you go there unless you have something against Southern food. Their specialty is fried chicken. Never tried that. Maybe next time. Valle Crucis is a quaint little area alongside the Watauga River. Oh, one last thing, they accept reservations and it is highly recommended. read more

My daughter never had her water refilled and was not asked. Our server disappeared for long periods of time and the pacing was way off. My daughter and son in law have been here 3 times. Although my meal wasn't perfect, the ravings of my family members and the wonderful ambiance score high enough to boost Over Yonder to a 5. Our waitress was sweet, efficient, and knowledgeable despite working multiple tables at once. The decor was pleasant, with cool old board games on the walls of the room in which we were seated. They also played old rock music at just the right volume. Food wise, the fried chicken, pita bread with pimento cheese dip, homemade apple sauce, and cheese grits with bacon were very, VERY well received. The sweet tea was freshly steeped and wonderful. The slaw was good, but maybe not for us -- no red onion fans here! The mac and cheese was kind of underwhelming, but tasty enough to eat. The mashed potatoes had perfectly sized chunks of potato inside, but I felt mine were a little under seasoned. Lastly, I felt the Lima beans were over cooked -- they basically disintegrated in my mouth. We finished the meal with peach cobbler and chocolate chess pie. Both pretty good -- not as good as mom's! -- but we preferred the peach cobbler. :) Overall, though, Over Yonder was an amazing and delicious experience in a beautiful part of the country. When we come to the area each year there are only 4 places we eat at. As of this year's visit, that list is now 3. We arrived early at 4:45 pm on 8/5/2020. We first called from the parking lot to place a pick up around 4:55 pm. The girl was very apprehensive to consider taking the order. We asked about an item we saw online on the dinner menu. She argued the item was lunch only and we should check the menu online. We had before calling. We wait for them to open and we walk up. On the menu at the door for dinner was.....that item. There were only 2 other parties there. No one was waiting as we walked in. There were no signs indicating to go order customers were 2nd class citizens and had to order outback in the all but empty dark store. The hostess called my wife who was walking with a severe limp around the podium to point out the place through window. The hostess noticed her severe limp where she had just hurt her knee. Instead of offering to take our order, we are pointed out there in the rain. Then to top off everything else as they are watching my wife limp out ahead of me, I was verbally attacked by a waitress because heaven forbid my face shield slipped just a little below my nose. Her attitude aligned perfectly with all of the other attitude we had received up to that point. We did head on out to the shack where the 2nd class to go order citizens were to place orders out in the rain but we kept on to the truck. Obviously with only serving 2 other covers at 5pm they didn't need my money bad enough to treat us decently. So we headed back to Boone. We placed an order with Bella's Italian. They were excellent. Awesome customer service. They were happy we were there. The pizza and meatballs were really good. So next time you are in Watauga County ..... Head on over yander to Bella's in Boone. We drove in from Beech Mountain and it was stunning to say the least. The serine countryside made for a relaxing drive and it had me reminiscing of simpler times. The restaurant is set on the side of a hill and is absolutely breathtaking. They've clearly paid attention to detail as both the inside and outside are pristine. Once inside, there are multiple rooms of seating. Each are unique and eloquently designed. We sat in one of the back rooms that was lined with original brick. Stunning! I ended up ordering the pork burger with chips. The burger came topped with a coke slaw and pickle. The bun was lightly buttered and really pulled the whole thing together. I'll definitely be ordering it again! My wife got a salad and was very complimentary. This could be one of the most memorable meals I've ever had! We WILL be back! read more

Charming restaurant, but only if you have plenty of time and nowhere to be. Checked in at 12:55 and was told a 15-minute wait. We were seated at 1:30 - I get it, sometimes things get backed up. Ordered at 1:40. Around 2:00 our waitress said that the kitchen was a bit behind but our food was coming soon. Food didn't arrive until 2:25 with no further explanation or acknowledgement of how long we waited. My parents, boyfriend, and I ate here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience! Without making a reservation we were pleased to promptly receive a table on the beautiful front deck. I ate the pork burger on gluten free bun, and let me tell you, it was the best burger I have ever eaten (It reminded me very much of a pulled pork sandwich. The gf bun was also delicious). The four of us also split the cornbread skillet which made a perfect appetizer. I would especially like to point out how friendly and professional the server and hostess were.
