The place is amazing it has a western theme!! And the food is amazing come hungry because the plates are huge.. I have a 1/2 order of chicken Cesar salad and I couldn't finish it I can just imagine how a normal one would be like.. we also had the onion rings and fried zucchini and it comes in a huge tortilla bowl... You wont be disappointed!! This place has always been one of my favorite spots to eat in Helena, until today! Not sure what ya happened but the food has become terrible! Today I ordered 12 wings ($18) a side salad ($7.50) and a side of French fries ($6.50). First off the prices are absolutely outrageous! The side salad is described as having fresh greens, I got wilted iceberg lettuce, one carrot, 5 croutons, 1 piece of broccoli, 1 piece of cauliflower. Both the broccoli and cauliflower are browning! Two burgers, onion rings, two beers, $60 (with tip) out the door is pretty pricey when the food doesn't taste any better than Chili's or Applebee's. I am used to waitresses asking if you want to upgrade part of the meal without disclosing how much it will cost, but when you specifically ask "how much to upgrade the fries to onion rings?" and they respond "something like $1.50"... and you upgrade both meals to onion rings and the bill shows $4.50 each ($9 for like five rings each????) that doesn't sit well with me... read more

The wings were overpriced but they are everywhere. They would not allow us to do 2 sauces for an order of 12 wings. We decided with 25 wings so we could get two different sauces; Daytona and Buffalo. The Buffalo sauce had a good kick but a little ranch was the perfect touch. I wasn't a fan of Daytona. It reminded me of a thick soy sauce. Way too salty. I was annoyed that they put both types in the same basket. I was not feeling the Buffalo mixed with Daytona. Each flavor should have their own basket. The drinks were overpriced. $11 for a Moscow mule. I could have bought a whole bottle of vodka for the cost of two drinks. We wanted to sit outside because it was so cold inside. Interesting experience... Succeeded at social distancing, however, going out several times during these crazy covid days, not once have I been this disappointed. First of, waitress was rude to start, arrived at the table and asked what we wanted to drink. We had no idea what they offered since we've never eaten here before. When we asked for menus she said it's on your table, only allowed one for cost of savings, 1 paper menu for 7 of us? Cost of food was expensive for quality and portion size. All but the soup was luke warm. Fries tasted like they'd sat for a couple hours under the warming light. I personally feel like they are trying to hard to make up for lost monies in these hard times, which I get, but at the cost of those willing to spend money there? I've been craving a steak for a couple weeks, but all the steakhouses where I've been traveling have been closed. Got to Helena and this place was 1/8 of a mile from the motel. Very very good! Great service from the bartender too. Med rare ribeye cooked perfectly. Hot roll with a pad of room temp butter.....don't know why most restaurants can't figure that out......good job Overland!! Have eaten here a few times over the years and the lunches have been good enough to bring us back. Got here for a late lunch, and ordered the Blue Cheese Burger. The blue cheese sauce was very good... not so strong that it overwhelmed the flavorless beef coaster it was served over. This leftover burger patty was obviously cooked during the lunch rush and rewarmed to serve to the next customer ignorant enough to order one. It was so well done, all the moisture-less meat tasted like was a sawdust patty. If a facility's concern over customer satisfaction takes a backseat to saving a buck, the message is clear. I was staying in a nearby Marriot and looking for a place to enjoy dinner and watch the Masters Golf Tournament. Found the perfect place. After a long drive I entered the Overlander Express and had a seat right in front of the TV screen at the bar. The friendly bartender welcomed me and gave me some samples of some IPA's that were on tap. After I picked one of them I settled into my bar chair, watched golf, and ordered a fresh salad with a medium done Prime Rib Roast beef with a big baked potato. All were excellent and served hot and juicy! I ordered my Au Jus on the side as well as my condiments for my potato. No problem. I was told they do 2 or 3 Prime ribs a day. A very comfortable, home like, local place. They also have a full restaurant in the same building and it looks great. People in the restaurant seemed like they were enjoying themselves. My meal tasted like the chef/cook liked what he was doing. I have gone there in previous years on my annual road trip and have never been disappointed. Give it a go! P.S. Would have given a 5 star if one TV was a little bigger for watching sports in the bar. read more

For a 20+ dollar sirloin, I was expecting at least a high quality Choice if not a Prime... but it was dry and tough and cooked to medium rare. My friend ordered the prime rib special and it was also very tough. The waitress was attentive and smiley but when asked about their rotating beer selection she was clueless, saying, "they change them all the time so I really can't tell you about any of them." WTF? We ordered something that sounded local and they came in very warm mugs that had obviously just out of the dishwasher... A Chili's or Applebee's Beer-n-Steak combination is not only better, its much cheaper. read more

I had heard good things but didn't get good things. Order was 1 rib-eye steak, a half taco salad, 1 kids grilled cheese. Sat us and all was great until we needed an extra minute to decide. That minute was 15. Thought we were forgot about. Then it took another 25 for food to get there. Literally 1 hour from arrival before we were eating. Now the food. My taco salad had no meat. Rib-eye wasn't cooked to order and was bland. Fries with the grilled cheese were cold. Overall I don't think they were trying to make a good experience but rather just pushing food out. Very nice place, I think we have been here 3 or 4 Times now when we come down to the veterans Hospital from Kalispell. We usually have a steak But this time she had a steak sandwich and I had their special which was Chicken Fried steak and two scoops of their mashed potatoes which is really good they are not mashed all the way smooth and that's what I like. We want to love the Overland. They have a great beer list and one of the only happy hours in Helena. The first few times we went, things were decent. The dragon sauce is delicious, as is the balsamic dressing. So, why only one star?? Service. It's terrible. Horrible. It would be laughable if it weren't so maddening. The last two times we went, it took forever to be acknowledged. Then a similarly long wait to place an order. The two wait staff spent their time chatting with friends, ignoring their tables for extended periods of time. Need something? You will have to awkwardly interrupt their conversations. Save your time and money. Helena has far better establishments. read more

I've eaten here a few times since moving back to Helena and I'll tell you right off the bat that one of those stars is just for their Dragon Sauce, I've only had it on the wings but I want to try the mushrooms too, it's delicious and has only been too salty once. We also order the wings to go from here often. The service here varies from uninterested to rude, on one instance when we took most of our wedding party for wings and drinks we waited for 15 minutes for menus until I finally got them myself. Tried to place our order at the bar and were told "it doesn't work that way, go back and wait" and when she finally came to take our order one person paused for one second and she said "you know it would really help if you all ordered at once so I didn't have to come back here" and then when told we would be sharing a few things (50 wings! That's a sizable dish right there) she heaved and exasperated "You guys are killing me!" and collapsed into an empty chair at our table to take the rest of the order. A memorable experience for sure, just probably not the type you are looking for. On another occasion I ordered a rueben that came with two measly pieces of corned beef, about 7 strands of sauerkraut, no sauce and a tomato (for some reason). At first I just asked for a side of sauerkraut to fill it in with, which came ICE COLD, so I finally asked the manager for a new one, which was beautiful by the way, and free. I like that it was taken care of but it should have started that way! I've had steaks that were OK never fantastic. In conclusion, just go sit at the bar and have the Dragon Wings, if you want dining, fine or otherwise, go somewhere else. read more

Overall, the Overland wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either. The bar (where we sat) is spacious and comfortable, with a good selection of beer. It is slightly noisy, but you can still have a conversation. The dress code appears to be popped collars, tribal tattoos, Axe body spray, Ed Hardy, and embroidered jeans for men and women... Our server was pleasant, but service was very slow. The burger was good, but the Rueben, like so many sub-par Ruebens, suffered from acute soggy-bottom disease, and, oddly had tomato on it. The sauce was also, strangly, served on the side. I should have been more suspicious, since they referred to the Rueben as "famous", a universal warning sign. The Dragon mushrooms were bizarre: whole sautéed mushrooms swimming in Dragon Sauce, a very sweet, gingery, teriyaki-ish goo, and topped with melted cheese. Typically, one does not associate cheese with Asian flavors, and with good reason. An equivalent would be nacho cheese on kung pao tofu. Not entirely indelible, but the off-kilterness of the combo will make you feel queasy. Despite the beer selection being good, the beer quality isn't. Based on the taste of my beer, they should review their tap-line draining and cleaning protocol. read more

I hate it when I read bad reviews and go anyway because in the ancient past I liked something. Time of wait. One star terrible I mean 40to minutes to place an order??? Waitress kept telling us a bus made it so busy. The bus left as we pulled up was this residual busy? Half the restaurant was empty. What a joke definitely not enough help on a Sunday night. I mean you think people might want to go out on a Sunday night? My daughter asked for BBQ sauce got it fifteen minutes later after asking three times and she was done eating. Look I made it clear I wasn't happy about waiting 40to minutes to place an order you think she would have done everything she could to try and make us happy. Instead we have to listen to her whine to every customer in our section that she had been there since 9AM. Felt like that's when we should have showed up to order dinner for 6PM. Now to the food. Salad and soup came with dinner and the soup was cold and the lettuce was warm. My chicken was bone dry. The BBQ my daughter ordered was decent. The Ceaser salad was over priced for the tiny bit of chicken they throw on it. Overall this place has screamed downhill. Anyone who reads this review and eats there consider yourself forwarned. And make sure you write a review saying I was right. Go somewhere else. read more

The only reason I gave them any stars is because the bar is awesome. They have my favorite beer, Pigs Ass Porter! However... I ate in the bar, ordered the dragon burger with steak fries. Our primary motivation for selecting this place was its close proximity to our hotel (Super 8 Helena). After a long day of riding, the thought of jumping back on our motorcycles was not at the top of our list. On the bright side, the restaurant had an extensive beer list (draft and bottle -- more than shown in the photo that another reviewer submitted). We selected a couple of IPAs from separate Montana breweries -- both tasty, but the hoppier seasonal IPA was the winner). On the so-so front, dinner was plentiful, but slow coming out of the kitchen. It was reasonably hot but not "piping". I ordered the 10 oz prime rib special, which came with Texas toast, soup or salad (mine with some purported blue cheese dressing -- more like ranch with a little blue cheese essence added. Leafy green lettuce, croutons, and pickled beets.). The prime rib was cooked fine, and it was OK -- not the melt-in-your-mouth kind. Baked potato was excellent, and came with customary dollups of sour cream and butter, and bacon (bits). The spousal unit ordered a prime rib sandwich, which looked like an 8oz cut tucked under a single slice of the aforementioned Texas toast, and a mini-salad. A friend ordered a taco salad which came with shreaded, not ground beef -- a plus I think. He ordered a side of clam chowder which was proclaimed as "good" -- I can't attest personally. We were all very hungry and thirsty, which might provide an upward bias on the food score. Biggest problem was that the main courses were S-L-O-W coming from the kitchen -- I wondered if there was only one cook. At least it wasn't cold. Service was slow but courteous -- the wait staff seemed a bit overworked as the restaurant was relatively full. Would I eat here again? Under the same conditions, yes. However, I'd probably explore the brewpub around 2 miles down the road if I could convince my wife and friends to jump back on the bikes again after a long ride through Yellowstone.... FYI - The restaurant side serves beer and wine only. The adjoining saloon is a full bar. Also, no AmEx -- just Visa or Mastercharge (cash also graciosly accepted). read more
