Our primary motivation for selecting this place was its close proximity to our hotel (Super 8 Helena). After a long day of riding, the thought of jumping back on our motorcycles was not at the top of our list. On the bright side, the restaurant had an extensive beer list (draft and bottle -- more than shown in the photo that another reviewer submitted). We selected a couple of IPAs from separate Montana breweries -- both tasty, but the hoppier seasonal IPA was the winner). On the so-so front, dinner was plentiful, but slow coming out of the kitchen. It was reasonably hot but not "piping". I ordered the 10 oz prime rib special, which came with Texas toast, soup or salad (mine with some purported blue cheese dressing -- more like ranch with a little blue cheese essence added. Leafy green lettuce, croutons, and pickled beets.). The prime rib was cooked fine, and it was OK -- not the melt-in-your-mouth kind. Baked potato was excellent, and came with customary dollups of sour cream and butter, and bacon (bits). The spousal unit ordered a prime rib sandwich, which looked like an 8oz cut tucked under a single slice of the aforementioned Texas toast, and a mini-salad. A friend ordered a taco salad which came with shreaded, not ground beef -- a plus I think. He ordered a side of clam chowder which was proclaimed as "good" -- I can't attest personally. We were all very hungry and thirsty, which might provide an upward bias on the food score. Biggest problem was that the main courses were S-L-O-W coming from the kitchen -- I wondered if there was only one cook. At least it wasn't cold. Service was slow but courteous -- the wait staff seemed a bit overworked as the restaurant was relatively full. Would I eat here again? Under the same conditions, yes. However, I'd probably explore the brewpub around 2 miles down the road if I could convince my wife and friends to jump back on the bikes again after a long ride through Yellowstone.... FYI - The restaurant side serves beer and wine only. The adjoining saloon is a full bar. Also, no AmEx -- just Visa or Mastercharge (cash also graciosly accepted). read more

Unfortunately the customer service (manager) told me there was nothing they could do. I Explained that I had had ordered dinner to go the night before and the desserts were missing. He insinuated that I was lying to get free desserts. I have awesome character and integrity and would never do that. read more

I'm working in Helena this week and tried out this steakhouse for dinner. I really enjoyed it. Wish I had room for dessert. Great menu selection, limited with seafood. Primarily shrimp scampi entrees. Although my server was very nice, I couldn't pry suggestions out of her. "Every thing's good". Weak! The vegetable soup was great! I'd get a big bowl of that and some Texas toast... nice!! Maybe I'll come back and try one of their steaks, I just had the Hunters Chicken. We want to support local restaurants so we try to order in a few times a week. On Thursday we tried the Overland.The roast beef in my sandwich was tough, cold and tasted old / freezer burned. My husband's cheeseburger was ice cold. The appetizers (fried mushrooms, cauliflower, onion rings, etc al) arrived as a big mess of soggy breading with the vegetables unrecognizable. Considering that the Overland charges a delivery fee AS WELL AS a service fee, ALONG with a tip, and sends out terrible food, this makes their delivery service poor at best. My wife loved this place, I forget what she had to eat. I had the Chicken cordon blue, it was to dry to swallow well. I had to chase every bite just so I didn't choke. Once I was finally able to eat at Overland Express, I was pleased. I tried twice before and the dining room closed earlier than the sign outside said, which I a big reason for the 3-star rating. We went for lunch and I got chicken strips, salad and cheesecake. My husband had the buffalo burger, salad, and apple pie. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that memorable. The chicken strips were a bit dry, I probably wouldn't order them again. The food was by no means bad, and there are other menu items that we would like to try. However, we went about a month ago and haven't had the urge to go back since. We tend to eat dinner late in the evening and after being sent away twice even though the sign outside said they should still be serving kind of took the overland express off the list of dinner options. Food? Average to below. I ordered a crab salad tonight. The snow crab was shredded, out of a can, and lacked flavor. The lettuce? That white iceberg stuff we all hate. Cucumbers? Dry and not at all tasty. I did get a few free beers for waiting, as.... Service? I sat in the lounge/bar area and heard the bartender, twice, tell people that there were two of them on staff. It was busy. And they were doing their best to keep up. Dude. It's a popular local hangout. Maybe the locals don't mind waiting 20 minutes for service, but I expect better. Why two stars versus zero? It's close to hotels and requires zero driving after a few beers. It's good for people-watching, most of the time. Will I return? Yes. But only because it's close to the hotel I typically stay at when I'm in town for work. They do have good burgers and, as one reviewer stated, their dragon sauce is amazing. Other than that? Maybe it's just me, but this is some of the best prime rib I have ever had. On a recent road trip from Alberta to Las Vegas, we stopped here on our trip back. The sides were nothing special, but I was there for the beef. My Dad had some kind of steak soup and he really liked it. So did the other guest with us. We all agreed this is somewhere we would eat again and I have been raving about it since I got home. The service was excellent, she was friendly and efficient and it was a quiet and relaxing atmosphere around 7pm Saturday evening. It was about 3/4 full but we were still able to enjoy our meal. We waited about 20 minutes for our food. It was not overly pricey, but I am not familiar with restaurant prices, it was cheaper by far than a prime rib dinner anywhere in Alberta. read more

The staff was friendly ! My chicken wings where good as they always have been. Should have stopped there. Payed a lot of money for a very poor meal. Iceberg lettuce, watery blue cheese dressing , and a basic tasteless dinner roll. My prime rib was so tough that I could hardly saw threw it. The worst part about that, was it was served on a plate in a pool of greasy au jus. (by some miracle my white shirt servide) a baked potato with a blob of sour cream, large lump of cold butter, packaged bacon bits and a little chive for class! Not even a heated up frozen veggie. My husband had a very rare end cut, he had asked for medium. All for the outrageous price of $75. before tip ! I have never left a bad review for anyone, until now ! Very disappointed read more

On a recent business trip to Helena, I have asked the hotel staff to recommend a good place to eat and was referred to Overland Express. After a short walk, I finally found the restaurant and first impression was the decor is like a ranch style interior and exterior. The restaurant is split into two section, to the right is the bar / lounge and to the left is the restaurant section. Upon sitting down, on the table was a pitcher of ice water for self service. Glancing through the menu, it seem the restaurant has a fairly good mix of food from salad, soup, chicken, pork ribs, steaks and some shrimp dishes. Asking for recommendation from the server was not helpful as I got the "every thing's good" routine. I decided to give the 16oz Rib eye a try. There was two soup option a vegetable soup or tomato cream, three potato option (hash brown, french fries, or baked potato). I opted for the baked potato and tomato cream soup. The soup came quickly and overall was just okay nothing really special. Then out came my 16oz Rib eye and I was hungry and wanting to eat some steak. However this is where the whole dish falls apart, the steak was bland no flavoring, the grill was probably not hot enough when they cooked the steak as the outside color of the steak does not look grilled. The steak was also not a high quality meat as half of the steak was a big slab of fat. No marbling into the meat probably also contributed to the lack of flavor. The only thing that was right was the steak was cooked medium rare as requested. As for the side dish the potato was okay but it's not really difficult to make baked potato. read more

Met up with a friend who grew up in Helena. I wanted to be outside and have a frozen strawberry daiquiri. Chelsea who was our server was new but attentive. She wasn't sure if they made frozen drinks, but found out that they do, so I ordered one. Amazing how expensive food is in Montana compared to other places in the country. Ordered a plate of onion rings for $10.75 which I think is expensive for fried dipped onions. They were pretty good, drinks were good. read more

One star...because I can't put zero. With a kid in the hospital, I thought we'd get a takeout appetizer and desert. Hadn't been there in 5 years because of rotten service but thought I'd try since I knew some changes had been made. Tried calling in my order to pick...no one answered the phone after about 20 rings. So I drive down and place my order. A full 45 minutes passed with me sitting 15 feet away from the hostess. I finally lose patience and she apologetically tells me that she told someone in the bar to give my order to me. So exactly how many times did someone walk past the order without wondering? This place is beyond ridiculous....its day has long past. All that time and the food is unforgivably mediocre -- and I had the dragon wings. (At least they didn't screw up the celery). So if you are looking for indifferent service, poor attitude, blaming other staff and capping your evening with mediocre food....by all means this is the place. read more

First time eating at overland, unfortunately probably will not return, service was very poor, for a not so busy lunch Saturday (approx 6 tables). Just getting drinks was a chore. Salads came minutes before meal after we'd been setting for over 20+ minutes, bread was heavy like a hockey puck and about the same flavor. My wife had the chicken cordon bleu. Rice was dry, ham in the chicken was so overcooked it was hard to eat. I had the prime rib not to bad, not great. Could have done without the half gallon of au ju, never received horseradish i ask for. left without finishing meal. For $55 definitely not worth the hour plus wait or the service. read more

Freaking abysmal! The NY steak I ordered was pure gristle and fat, save 3ounces of "beef" that somehow managed to be the least flavorful piece of meat I have ever eaten. My colleague ordered something weird off of the veggie menu......of course they didn't have it. Went for lunch since I was staying in the area. Everyone (I think in the whole state of Montana) was very friendly. Service was a bit slow, but the food was decent and pretty cheap. I had the chicken strips in the dragon sauce and they were pretty good- portion was big. I recommend getting the beer flight, great deal, and lots of local brews on tap. read more

I would have thought this place would be rated much higher! I've been in here once and when they where still going through a particular ordering service, I ordered from them a lot. And all WAS good. A couple of friends and I where saying goodbye after 3 years or so ( they where moving,) and they picked Overland as our "last call." We were seated immediately, treated very well, well attended to and when the food came there was definitely a lot of mmm-ing and groaning (because of the good food.) We all ordered the special, which was -I think- like a garlic butter steak, potatoes, salad and they got soup. Steaks were cook perfectly ( med. for them and med. rare for me which apparently are hard for most places to get right,) they loved the soup, potatoes didn't taste like they came out of a microwave and store in foil for hours and were pretty damn big. Again, all was good. Even the prices are good.I'ts hard to eat at a restaurant anymore were three grown people can eat this quality and amount of food for under $100.00 and ours was under $60.00! And quickly I'll say their wings and HOMEMADE blue cheese dressing are the best in town. I really like this place and would definitely recommend you go if your in town or haven't tried it yet. read more

Unfortunately having been born and raised in Helena, we have seen The Overland in its heyday. Tonight the service and food were the worst we have ever seen. We were seated promptly; but with 3 younger children were removed to the back of the restaurant. There were 3 other groups in the entire restaurant during our visit. The server had given sodas to the children and their parents before our arrival, checked back to get us drinks, and ask for our order. At this time, we were not yet ready to order appetizers or dinner. After 15 to 20 minutes of waiting for the server to return to order appetizers, I went in search of someone to help. The bartender (who was busy) went to find the server to help us. I had asked him to please have her order some nachos because the kids were hungry and please come take our order. Within about 5 minutes she returned to the table, snapping at me about how she had been there and we weren't ready. From there, every service encounter was testy. And then when the food arrived, as properly ordered, we were once again disheartened. The prime rib was way too salty. The salads were drenched in dressing. The ribeye was incredibly peppery. The rice pilaf was dry...and made with orange peel, citrus? Once again I will say, we are not recommending this place and just hope this review may help fix some of the issues. Just FYI The bill came out at $177.50 I tipped $31.50 Total (obviously) $209.00 I've been in the hospitality industry for many years and am just hating to see these things happen to businesses. read more

Born and raised in Texas, lived there all my life(I am 57), in the service industry the 1st 15 years of my adult life. moved to Montana 2 yrs ago. I can tell you this of ANY restaurant in Helena expect much less than average in service quality, food quality and far above average in price! I realize this may sound harsh but it is accurate. There is only 1 restaurant that I have not been as yet, I will eventually will get there. Applebee's and Chili's are typical in food quality and pricing as in any other state, but the service here really bites. Overland Express; 2 visits. The 1st was lunch, we ordered sirloin for lunch; it was cooked to order and tender and that is all I can say, raw meat thrown on a grill cooked med. rare, thrown on a plate and served. No seasoning just bland meat. The 2nd visit we both had the prime rib SPECIAL @ $22 a plate, 1 less than 1/8" slice of prime rib (approx 6 bites for me, less than that for my husband) it was cooked correctly but if you are paying $22 a plate they should at the very least double up on the meat.
