With my family from…read moreVirginia, my groom's family from Alabama, and our love of North Georgia, we zeroed in on several properties throughout this area. After visiting over five properties, all were either too rustic or too cookie cutter perfect. On our final site visit, we knew we had found THE place at Mountain Laurel Farm. The farm is located just inside the Chattahoochee National Forest which provides so many scenic views. Driving up, you're just taken away by the tranquil peace of the property. The barn itself is quite rustic, but it's so charming and still provides the basic necessities (restrooms, electricity). Although there is no climate control, we had no issue with the heat on our wedding date after opening all the doors and windows and adding a few household fans. I do wish there had been more resources in the catering room; I'm hoping Melody can make some upgrades there in the future (running water/industrial sink, ice machine, larger fridge/freezer). However, our caterer had no issues with making the catering area work for them. Melody, the property owner/manager, was incredibly easy to work with. She was so patient throughout the process, quickly answering all my questions and concerns. She has so much décor and so many props and furniture available at the barn, along with her linen rentals, you really only need to show up with your food and beverage. She had lots of good ideas about how to set-up the barn so that it would maximize space for our guests. We loved having access to the farmhouse for the wedding day. Although no one lodged there, it was a welcome place for me and my bridesmaids to finish getting ready, as well as a cool spot for our wedding party and us to rest after the ceremony and before photos. It was fun to look out onto the ceremony space before the ceremony and after and see all of our family and friends gathering for our special day. The property is located a short distance from a major interstate, and just off a main highway, with close access to resources (grocery store, entertainment and cultural activities, department chain stores). This was helpful to our friends and families, all traveling in from out of town. Most of our guests made a weekend of the trip, visiting Helen, wineries, water activities, and all the other things the area has to offer. There are many rental cabins close-by and we also held a block of hotel rooms in Helen which was convenient for our guests. If you are looking for a charming rustic location with wonderful amenities and breathtaking views, I highly recommend Mountain Laurel Farm for any wedding or social occasion!

It's updated just enough to make you comfortable with the modern amenities (we LOVED the fully equipped coffee bar) while not taking away from the beautiful historic aspect of the home. The owners were incredible. They really went the extra mile and added so many little touches that made us feel welcome and and right at home. From the local handmade soaps and bath bombs (perfect for the clawfoot tub with mountain views) to the fresh baked goods from a local bakery, candles from a local business owner, fresh flowers, handwritten card, the list just goes on! Todd, part of the husband/wife duo that owns the home gave us so many wonderful recommendations on restaurants and things to do while we were there. We took him up on many of his recommendations (all were amazing) but we also stayed in and just spent as much time at the house as possible. The gas fireplaces were beautiful, we spent many wonderful moments enjoying the 2 porches with porch swings and balcony with mountain views. We took advantage of the fire pit with the firewood that they provided. We played board games, cooked big breakfasts in the gorgeous kitchen, and just felt so peaceful and happy to be there the entire time. I could just go on and on, but we seriously cannot recommend the Farmhouse on Boxwood enough and we're already counting down the days until our return trip. :)

The rice was cooked al dente and the truffle was dominant. Loved it. Salad was intermittent course and was dressed beautifully with a nice balsamic vinaigrette Entree was sous vide finished grilled pork tenderloin. Definitely a unique experience. We actually had the builder and owner give us a tour. It's was a 2…read morehour tour but we felt like we got the VIP experience. You could certainly go in, run around, look at the castle in 15 mins, but we wanted to understand the art, the reason behind the build and just learn a few things. Santa was there for pictures and it's neat that you can rent a room IN the castle. We weren't able to view those rooms but, I believe there are pictures online. Maybe we will come back and stay! You can't see the castle upon arrival, they take you in a bus up the hill so, I liked that it didn't ruin the surprise. They had little Tiaras for purchase and they give you a small prize when you complete the word puzzle they hand you. And event here would be cool. It would also be great if they had more drink or snacks for purchase but imagine that's in the works!! This was a costly project so, it will only get better!

So this was the second year for CastleFaire and it was even better than last year. It's not a huge…read morefaire by any means but it's growing. And well, you can't beat having it in a castle! Their location causes some logistical issues you don't have at most faires as there is no parking field. Most people have to park offsite and catch a free shuttle to the bottom of the mountain, then they drive you up to the castle. For those of us in full costume, the shuttle buses do add a level of complication we aren't used to but is definitely worth it If you like the Renaissance faire type events you need to go check this event out.

However, my friend scored when she found the Stovall House. The entrance is not very well lit at night. We ended up guessing where to turn and where to park our car. The Stovall House entrance seemed a bit unintuitive as the cars are parked at what looks like entrance side of the building. Even though the kitchen was closed, we were still offered food by Lloyd's wife, who had greeted us when we entered. We were hungry so we asked for whatever they had left. She had us find our own seat at the tables on the porch, where we poured our own waters and waited for her to bring us two warmed up plates of chicken Alfredo. It was ok but it was just reheated pasta. The room situation was a bit disorganized, as the lock was missing the key. Lloyd persuaded us to leave the door unlocked throughout the day while we were out. However, because we had locked it improperly the night before, we locked ourselves out the next day. Lloyd was patient and helped us as best as he could to get into our room, with or without a key. The bedroom and bathroom are very quaint and comfortable. The bed was huge, which was really all we needed to make sure we got good shuteye. The next morning, we got to breakfast in time for brunch. Fresh strawberries and coffee were brought out to us while we waited for our breakfast. Lloyd brought me bacon, eggs and grits. My friend doesn't eat pork, so he brought her a vegetarian omelette. She found it delicious until, unfortunately, I think a bacon bit slipped into the veggie mix. He apologized profusely and brought her another, but it was a bit undercooked. Honestly, everyone here is SO nice and work hard to make sure your stay is relaxing and you feel at home. While there are definitely a few kinks to work out, the Stovall House could make it if they focus on the bigger picture, too.

The flavor was ok, but for a ribeye it was rather tough and the marbling was substandard for what I would expect from a 4.5 star Yelp. The green beans with the country ham, turned out to be the star of my meal. Whatever you order, be sure to get the green beans for a side. I did round out dinner with a slice of authentic Georgia pecan pie complete with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I am a Georgia native, and this pie is as authentic as it gets. I can cook comparably for myself at home and I wouldn't give myself more than 3 stars either.
