I got my driver's license nine years ago and actually passed on my first try, but my skills atrophied after I moved to the Bay Area for college and work. When I moved back to Southern California and had to relearn how to drive, it was a stressful experience for both me and the family and friends who helped me practice. They were genuinely nervous riding with me at times, and I was especially anxious about lane changes, reversing, and parking. Oxford Driving School was able to fit me in for a same-week lesson despite my full-time work schedule, and the booking process was very smooth. I especially wanted to give my instructor, Chie, a shout-out. She was sweet, kind, encouraging, and very attentive to safety throughout our drive. She gave me clear, honest feedback about what I still needed to improve, particularly with parking, lane changes, speed, and traffic checks, while explaining corrections in a way that was constructive. I also appreciated that she struck a good balance between instruction and independence. She kept a close eye on what I was doing and stepped in when appropriate, but she also gave me opportunities to practice judging traffic gaps and making driving decisions for myself. She was sincerely invested in helping me understand how to reverse and park correctly rather than simply getting through the lesson. And somehow, she was in a great mood on a Saturday morning before 10 AM! As someone who is definitely not a morning person, I consider that a colossal feat. I had a very different experience with a driving school when I was a teenager, so I'm especially grateful for how positive and constructive this lesson was. I only used them once, but I like how flexible they were with me and my son... I procrastinated and waited until the last minute to get my 18 year old driving lessons. I panicked 2 days before my sons driving exam and ended up calling Oxford driving school, they were willing to accommodate my son last minute. They offered a 2 hour class the next day. I paid same day I called and my son was taken to the DMV area an practiced. My son said the driving instructor was cool and patient. I used this driving school awhile ago and deleted my old yelp account. This school has only instructor's that speak Korean. I was picked up late by one of the drivers and the guy put gas in his car while I was in the car on my time. Then he offended me by being disrespectful about my looks. After that we stopped to then read the rules for a behind the wheel driving lesson which was around 30 minutes and then I would have only 30 minutes left to drive. I started to say this is ridiculous you have wasted most of my time I am not going to pay you. I had to call their boss and let them know I won't be paying. The guy didn't even speak English and I was left in a random location far away from my home. Now sunny is going to leave a dum response. So far I have finished two (2 hours/class) classes with Ron, and its honestly going great. When I first started out, I was a nervous wreak and had no experience driving. But my Ron is doing a great job in guiding me, pointing out my mistakes, and keeping me calm. His teaching style is great- no nonsense in that my fear in driving will be excused, but also nice enough to talk throughout the lesson and go over mistakes. I dont feel like i'm being rushed at all, and thats saying something because I get flustered easily. So far I would say the lessons are worth the price. I am surprised with how quickly I can pick up the lessons and that raises my confidence with my driving. After a few more classes, I will be taking my driving test. I was discriminated for asking if I could have a Spanish instructor ( after talking to this guy once ) in the same moment , I called three time and it would send me to the voice mail. I had a bad experience trying to book an appointment with this school. It's Friday 12.20 pm , June 18th. 2021 for reference, I called and the person that answer was extremely rude ! I could not hear him well and also understand him. I believe I was discriminated against because I was asking to be helped on the registration. I had read some info but the school provides just a number but not an official website to do it yourself. I asked to have an instructor that could speak Spanish just that It could facilitate me to understand even better but the person hanged on me and never answered again. I'm assuming it's only one person that answers the phone since it'd send me to the voice mail. Very disappointed on this guy since the reviews are "good"( he sounded older and can't quite place his background) sounded like either speaks other language or an older white man) it's completely upsetting the fact that people like him are on the phone and even worse it makes me think the school is racist. I'm glad I'm passing on this driving school in particular since I think I was not going to be thought well. read more

The WORST instructors and driving school. Rude, Opportunistic and Greedy. I don't recommend. The instructors are rude and aggressive, and forget to mention essential rules that you will need during the actual DMV test. One of the instructors I had barely spoke ANY English and I genuinely could not understand anything he was saying during the entire lesson. I would ask him to repeat himself and still didn't know what he saying. The different instructors' advice contradicted each other, which only made learning how to drive 100x more difficult and honestly I feel like I became a worse driver by taking lessons here. When I asked to drive back from the DMV on one occasion, my instructor refused to let me drive back and said that he would drive us back because he wanted to save time and there was going to be traffic. So, basically I paid $210 for him to drive, when the whole purpose of me taking these driving lessons was for ME to practice and become a better driver. Oxford really only cares about getting their paycheck, finding opportunities to overcharge you, aside from that they're not concerned about you or whether or not you pass the test. read more

I only had 2 lessons both with Churl over 3 months ago, but unfortunately didn't pass because "I didn't stop at a stop sign" so that was critical and was an automatic fail. Not the instructors fault but more so the area I was taken to while preforming the actual test with the instructor - she was a little too dry and rude tbh and I had pulled up on the stop sign already - both instructors when I explained to them how I got failed they were surprised but understood why that was a fail. So I booked again just for the test and Ron was literally the best! He was so helpful and explained everything with much clarity, he kept drilling it as soon as I forgot and chose another method to better explain things to me. But he preaches about how smart he is as a chemical engineer or something; looks like he lives in his car (the one u practice in) and he's kind of elitist and narcissistic to the point where he prides himself in miraculously life hacking nutrition by swigging from a room temperature gallon of whole milk he keeps in the car. I Passed!! I have been driving in India but it's on the opposite side and the rules are so different. I took 4 (2 hour) classes with Douglas. They also offer pick and drop services which is just great and their prices are very cost effective and affordable. He was really great -- he stood in my parking lot on the blind spot so I can physically see how easily you can be fooled that there is no one behind you. I was weak with turns and he made sure I got it right. I also did mock test with him before the test so I was more confident. By Day 3, I was feeling so much more confident and I thought I was ready for the test. He is an individual with an interesting worldview. I am glad I trained with him. Since I hadn't purchased a car yet and its just hard to ask someone to lend their car, I was postponing my behind the wheel test but then I found out that Oxford does the DMV test, where they lend you their car (which you trained in, so you're already comfortable with the car), help you with correct paperwork for the test. Highly recommend. I accidentally stumbled upon by them through a word of mouth and thankful that I did. Always had a fear of driving which is why I pushed it as long as I did (almost 30) but knew I had to get over it for life necessities. The instructor Ron was very thorough and patient as well as Sunny who was compliant with my time schedule and made sure everything went smoothly. You always think your family member or friend can teach you but they are not professionals or know all the rules and you just end up getting upset or rushed or yelled at and get anxious. First of all, the cars are not marked "Student Driver" so pretty much every single class I was met with some frustrated LA driver not understanding that I was learning. Secondly, my instructor spoke average English at best. I want to start off by saying English is my second language. I was fortunate enough to learn it at a young age so I cannot compare, but I want to preface what I'm saying by reassuring the reader - I am very supportive of anyone brave enough to live in a country where the language is not their first. However, when learning how to drive..... you need to be on the same page. Example, my instructor telling me to "stop right" and it takes me fully decoding for 30 seconds before realising he means pull over. This language barrier was the biggest issue in my experience as we were having a very hard time communicating most of the time. Thirdly, I don't think this school cares about whether or not you actually become a good driver. Their only concern is you passing the test. I am not one of those people who can jump into a car, signal a few times, make a few turns, and pretend I know what I'm doing. I'm a 30 year old first time driver. Driving is extremely dangerous in the wrong hands and maybe I'm just boring but I'm just really not trying to injure anyone - or worse. Lastly, I'm going to get into the whole test experience. I had scheduled a road test at my local DMV. When I told my instructor about it, he asked me to change it to a different date because he wasn't free. Fine. But he also told me to schedule a specific DMV, Arleta, which was like an hour away from my house. He picked me up and I drove on the freeway for an hour before my test (they don't test you on the freeway) and only got about 15 minutes of practice around the DMV (you're supposed to get an hour). He said there are two routes the DMV takes you on for a test, but "it's always this one" so we practiced "this one". I, of course, got taken on the other one. Ok so here's the thing - Arleta (the valley) has different speed limits to LA county. On big boulevards in LA, the speed limit is always 35. In the valley, it goes up to 45. I did not know this and there were no speed limit signs during my few minutes on this specific boulevard. I got an automatic fail because I was going 33 thinking we were on a 35. When we finished the test, I was so frustrated I wanted to cry. I then had to drive an hour back on the freeway having just failed my test over a technicality my instructor didn't warn me of. I needed to be dropped off at work (approximately 5 minute drive from my house) but my instructor didn't have time. He made me exit the freeway (about 15 minutes away from my house let alone work) and asked me to Uber the rest of the way. I got out of the car, got cash out and this guy had the nerve to charge me extra for the extra time the test took (what about the 2 x hour long drives to and from the DMV YOU INSISTED ON?). I gave him the cash and he ended up giving me an extra $20 change (which I then spent on the Uber to work). He then, again, has THE NERVE TO CALL ME AND TELL ME HE GAVE ME TOO MUCH CHANGE. But it's ok because "next time" I can pay him back. Bro. There's not going to be a next time. All in all, I'd say I spent about $600 learning how to signal and make turns. All of my actual knowledge of the road I am lucky enough to be learning from a good friend who is teaching me to be the good driver I want to be. read more

Even though I spent many time and money in other driving schools before, I failed 3times. I thought I have learned in there, but I realized that they do not know how to teach the beginner. I usually drive very old car (I need to turn the handle forever if I want to turn left or right) The car I used for my practice with Oxford teacher was not older than 1year. Ohh And also I drove in freeway. Is that normal? I DIDN'T KNOW THAT because other driving schools, they did not allow me to take the freeway. This is the best affordable driving school in DTLA. I was charged a total of $240 for six hours of behind-the-wheel training; required by the DMV in order to obtain a provisional license because I was underage. My driving instructor was extremely generous and patient most of the time. He'll remain calm as long as you don't make any severe mistakes. He gave me a lot of tips that helped me pass my driving test, which I did on the first try! I suggest calling instead of going to the location directly. They'll tell you to text your information. Afterwards, they'll send a confirmation of when your driver is able to pick you up from your house. I have taken this class with a different instructor who name is james and for the most part was very good. I took it today with a different instructor named mr. jay he seemed very nice in text. But arrived 20 minutes late to our schedule class at 12. Which was fine at first then when we got in the car he proceeded to make comments on my appearance. I did not say much back because I didn't appreciate it. Then he says I can drive until we get to the residential neighborhood again which is fine. While we are driving he asks can he stop to get gas I say okay that is fine. So we stop then finally we get to the residential neighborhood then start explain the rules of the road which again is okay but then I look at the clock and get frustrated because an hour has already passed which I am paying for and I have not driven. So when he start to explain the rules of the road it is around 1:04 I ask well how long is this going to take an hour has already passed I will only be able to drive for 30min. I understand they explain the rules but you can not show up late want to stop for gas and then drive 20 min to a neighborhood. So I started to get upset and said I am not going to pay full price for this it is unfair. So we did not continue the class and I got out the car and said I had to leave. Also live close to wear he wanted to practice so I had to spend 30$ to get back to downtown. If you are on a tight schedule and want your money's worth ask for James he is pretty good. read more
