Hired Oxford to do the 6 hr training pre-license with my teen. Had looked at BBB ratings, DMV background and found this company to be one of the most solid, trustable driving schools. After I selected them, I reached out by email and got suggested to text with our instructor George. George was pretty prompt in the text messages, getting back to me in the evenings. He suggested to start with an afternoon mtg.. Time to meet came and went and texted/called George a few times. Long story short, there were multiple issues out of his control that delayed the meeting. Both he and us kept level heads about it, accepted the reality and moved on. Appreciate his professionalism! After that 1st 2hr class, my teen was feeling more confident and knowledgeable. For the second and third classes we went with early mornings. Teen is an early riser so no issues there. Each class my teen was more confident. When I rode with my teen later, I noticed the changes, and was pretty impressed. Then come in-car test day. Teen of course was a little nervous, but with some last minute advice from George, my teen passed with an almost perfect score (was a little too fast in a residential area). Passed on the first test is a great accomplishment! Would hire George and Oxford again and suggest them to friends and others! read more

Michael came recommended by a friend; therefore when I called to make an appointment and his first availability was a month out we were willing to wait. Less than a week before the session was scheduled, Michael texted that he would not be available and would need to re-schedule. I replied back that I understood and asked when can we re-schedule....but no response whatsoever. I waited a week and then sent a follow-up text asking when we can re-schedule,,,,again no response. I waited one more week and then sent a second follow-up text....and as you can guess no response. Did a two-hour run with Mr. Michael Xu a few months ago. I thought I would have a pleasant experience despite my skills. I thought wrong. My mother recommended this school's services because of her prior experience with Mr. George (who helped her get her license), so I went ahead with it and had an appointment at around noon. Initially, Xu was pretty nice and comforting. Then it turned a bit SOUR. Here's why: Mr. Xu: 1. Became condescending when I made the same mistake several times. Surely learning to drive is a process. But c'mon, I paid you for this! Have some patience! 2. Building up on above, became generally irritated throughout the session. Had lost almost all his patience and temper near the end. Minor mistakes had him outright yelling. 3. Often distracted by telephone calls. 4. JUST NO PATIENCE. MADE ME NERVOUS. PRETTY RUDE BRO. 5. Talked down to me if I was a child when explaining a mistake. Assumed I "wasn't listening." I wanted to drive home half-way and take half of my money back. Although he did teach me a lot about the road during the 2-hour session, AND was somewhat determined to make me a better driver, I believe he could've handled it a lot better. Had the nerve to say I was ready for the driving test when I was having mini anxiety-attacks the entire time. When he said "We have a lot of work to do." Helllllll no. No money for you. He pretty much killed my confidence up until my permit expired. I renewed it, practiced with my dad more, and passed my test. To this day, anything involving cars or driving gives me PTSD-esque flashbacks of this bad experience. I encourage aspiring drivers to do some good research before paying an instructor a week's groceries that a friend or relative will do for free. read more

My review is for Martin and Susan. I initially took 3-4 lessons with Martin leading up to my test. I felt he was more focused on getting me to pass the test as opposed to rooting out mistakes in my driving and technique. His approach was one of strictness and gesticulation. I did not pass the test. After a couple of months, I took classes with Susan - she was able to identify my shortcomings and corrected my technique (Eg. actually taught how to grip the steering wheel during turns). In order to explain decision making during right turns, she had us go and stand at the junction and observe the various scenarios and learn the do's and don'ts - which I found very useful. Her patience and composure in providing instructions I think, were key in me passing the test comfortably with just 3 errors. She was focusing not just on having me pass the test but in producing a good driver. She also provided advice regarding scenarios that I would encounter in freeways, etc which is not relevant to the test itself but very useful once you start driving on the roads. Thank you very much, once again. Bottom Line: If you're relatively new to driving in the US (or to driving in general), ask for Susan. Combining both experiences, my rating is 4/5. read more

I recommend this Driving School strictly for Asians and Indians who want a a little flexibility in taking the driving lessons to get Driving License. My case, the flexibility i talked about in my case was , 1. I just wanted to take just one lesson before my test instead of taking half or full course which burns hole in your pocket. 2. I also wanted the driving school to lend me car on driving day. 3. And i wanted to take that lesson in Santa Clara which is not where i live :) I called up most of the folks here who have got such a high ratings if they could offer something like this and to my surprise, the answers were as hilarious as 1. If you live in Belmont, we can not give you lesson in Santa Clara as we need to pick you up and you cant come to us :) 2. Just one lesson, NO WAY !! Nobody can learn driving just in one lesson :) 3. One lesson , OK !!But its the instructor who will have a final say whether we should lend you car for test on your test day or not based on how confident instructor is. To me all these are nothing but to squeeze more money out of you even when all you want is one lesson where the primary objective is to have a car from school on Test Day. Due to my good deeds, i came to know about George and he offered me one lesson, his car and allowed me to take lesson in Santa Clara near DMV though i lived in Belmont :) So if you dont want to spend much and get best bang for your buck, reach out to George. I failed the California DMV behind the wheel test twice before after taking lesson from a different school. I was desperately searching for instructors and driving schools to pass the test third time otherwise I had to repeat the entire cycle. Then I came across Susan from Oxford, I called Oxford and requested for an availability adhoc within 30 min and Susan was available at that time. She instructed me in Santa Clara's roads where there are some specific type of roads which I don't find in Palo Alto. She started explaining from basics by showing the way they scoring maneuvers and critical errors happen. Later, we went in the city roads to get familiarize and it was super helpful because I learnt a lot in this lesson. And guess what, the next day I finally passed the test and I am very happy about it. I'll certainly recommend Susan from Oxford if you have your driving test anytime soon. read more

Had a instructor named Jenny Sousa. She constantly requested I pay her in cash which seemed really shady, looked like she pocketed the cash and was teaching on her own time. During the driving class she would constantly be booking other people and stopping in the middle of no where and making protein shakes, eating or doing her own thing. This was very unprofessional and on my driving time she would pick other people up and let them drive so I received less practice. I feel my time was wasted and didn't learn anything, just lost a ton of money for nothing. To top it off she would demand a monetary tip from the people she was teaching at the end of the lesson. Might be just this instructor or this business as a whole but I would avoid it at all cost. read more

I can drive with my French driver's license but I decided to get a Californian one to make life easier. I took a lesson with George and it was *exactly* what I needed. He taught me about the common gotchas and errors when driving around Santa Clara and the subtle differences between US and French driving, such as stopping 6 feet before the stop line, not using my left foot to brake on automatic transmissions (lol), etc. He is very strict with spotting mistakes, so I learned a lot. By the end of the lesson I was ready for the test, but George was so great that I took a second one just to be extra sure. Hi, I recently took my behind the wheel training from this school, to put things modestly, I will I give 2 stars because: 1) trainer Susan's accent was very difficult to understand, I had to ask her twice or thrice to make sure I understood exactly what she was saying and not make a blunder. 2) when I spoke to some person in their office he told me a rate of $90 for 2 hrs. But, when my training was complete, she asked me $95, finally she did take $90 but the reason for $95 was because I stay in Mountain view & it's far from Santa Clara hence, extra, but I had already informed them about my location. Well, all in all I will say training part was okay but more clarity is required while explaining the mistakes. read more

George was great, like a personal Yoda teacher for driving :D Very good instructor who helps you identify exactly what you're doing wrong so you can finally correct it. He goes by the book (the DMV handbook) and draws out on paper everything clearly so you can see visually if a particular traffic situation is confusing. I think he takes his job very seriously and is a dedicated teacher. I had 3 different instructors and I believe my lesson with George was the most beneficial one. My wife got driving training from George, who is pretty good in teaching. He is very patient, knows how to teach in the right way and never gets annoyed even if you make the same mistake again and again. He quickly finds the common mistake and corrected her driving and scanning habits. If you are a first time driver and nervous, I would not recommend this school. George is a patient instructor and teaches you the rules well, but sometimes gives instructions in an agitated manner while you are driving. On my first day of lesson, we had a clear communication about the time and date of my driving test. George even wrote it down and confirmed it several times. In spite of that, on the day of my test, he had scheduled somebody else. He blamed me for not calling him earlier. He quickly arranged for another car (Susan's car), on which I had no practice. I was already nervous and this fiasco made it worse. The car was also small and drove poorly. Obviously, I failed. I went to another school and got more practice with an instructor who was much more calm, friendly and made me confident. However, that school does not let you take early morning tests. The best thing about Oxford Driving School is that they are ready for early morning driving tests (earlier than 8 am). So I booked a car with them just for the 7:30 am test. Martin showed up with his car on time. I was confident this time, but Martin had other plans. He kept trying to get me to take more lessons with them and kept talking about "If you fail...", "you should practice..." etc. That is not how you should talk to someone who is going to take his test. Anyway, I ignored him and stayed focused on the test. The car was not good either, the accelerator would need to be pressed hard to kick in, and when it would, it would jerk. Anyway, I managed to pass. So if you are a first time driver, do not go for this school. If you have driving experience and just need to practice some more, these guys will do. And if you just need to use their car for the test, just ignore their discouraging talk and you should be fine. read more

Unfortunately I didn't have the best experience at Oxford driving school. I wasn't aware that it was cash only and my instructor Susan had a thick accent which was disappointing. On the upside I was able to correct my turns and keep a reminder of how to change lanes correctly. Although she kept wanting to grab the wheel and brake consistently. And whenever I did something wrong we would have to pull over and I would get a 20 minute re-down on how to do it right. I'm not saying I am not grateful for the opportunity since I am a college student paying for this. But it wasn't as effective as I'd hoped because I'm a hands-on person and stopping every time I'd make a mistake wasn't the best thing for me. read more

I cleared my test in first attempt. I took one class from Martin and it was extremely helpful. He corrected my mistakes very patiently and was very clear on rules. Whenever i made a mistake Martin would ask me to pull over to curb and open a book with pictorial diagrams to explain how to do it correctly. I gave my test at Santa Clara and he made me practice well in that area. I cleared my test because of his good guidance and practice. Drove with Michael last year for 3-4 lessons. He was really rude. He would laugh at my mistakes, scream at me, and talk on the phone basically the whole time. When I told him to explain something he would yell at me and laugh at my mistakes. Rudest experience I've had very unprofessional and during the first two lessons he didn't even had a "Student Driver" label on the car or a company label on the car. Do not come here! My review is for Mr. George. I highly recommend him as a driving instructor. I had taken lessons from another top rated driving school mainly because of the reviews, but was left with 500 bucks down the drain and zero confidence and minimal knowledge. I chose this school as it was closest to my residence. My lessons with George were excellent, he was not trying to teach me to get a license, he was trying to teach me how to drive safely! Now, I have to say this,I already flunked my tests twice, and today I have the license only because of George's patience and perseverance because I was just not getting the hang of it!! George came on time to all the lessons, didn't charge me extra if we ran over by a few minutes. He was patient, kind, flexible and above all a teacher who really wants to teach and see his students succeed. I am sure you probably hear of good instructors, driving schools etc. I was just stunned when he was soo focussed on making me succeed, small things like, do you have the fee for the retest? He happily took out the fee and gave it to me, as I did not have change( they only take cash at the DMV). Who does that? That is just so kind, and so invested in the student's result. Some of the things which I found outstanding were 1. With each mistake, especially repeated over and again instead of yelling at me (happened with the other driving school) or getting annoyed with my mistake, he would patiently ask me to pull over and explain what went wrong. 2. Each explanation was accompanied with a clear diagram to understand what the traffic rule is, what the exact mistake was, and how to correct it in the future. 3.Very, very patient and alert. Even if it seemed like he was not watching, he was always watching. 4. Extremely motivating. He would explain why the test is conducted in this manner, and why I need to pass the test and so on. Basically reminding me about how important this test is. This is something I think teenagers would really find very helpful. 5. On the first class, he provided notes, booklets and made you mark all the important stuff, which I found very helpful. 6. Since I am a doctor and someone who thrives on academic success, it was very humiliating for me to fail a test. I had never failed a test of any sort in my life! I was very surprised when George explained how some brains process practical, hands on stuff, whereas others don't. I knew that, but I was deeply surprised to hearing that from a driving instructor. All the more respect, because he really understands not just his topic, but about how your brain processes learning, which says a lot about the teaching style. I cannot say enough good things about this teacher. In Indian culture, we pay a lot of respect to teachers whether or not they deserve it. I had a great experience with Michael as he came recommended by a friends friend. I have a license but haven't needed to drive for a long time since I lived in NYC . After moving to the Bay Area in August I felt a bit nervous about getting back into the driving mode. Michael went over the CA rules and gave tips and made me very comfortable. He took me within neighborhoods and residential areas and also on major freeways. He gave me the full two hours of undivided attention and had a pleasant personality. He also made a trip to Fremont though it was slightly farther out of his service area. It was 100.00 well spent for the two hour lesson. I would highly recommend a driving school and instructor such as Michael instead of learning or practicing with family since professionals are less judgmental and more patient and informed than relatives are. read more

I have had two experiences, one good and one really bad. And hence the low rating. First one was a lesson with George. This lesson was really good. He his patient and explains things calmly. He will never interfere while you are driving, which i think is the most important thing. If you make mistakes while driving, he will make a note and then explain it once you stop. The lesson was really good as he explained some gotchas to watch out for on the test day. Now the worst part. My test was scheduled to be early morning. Unfortunately, George could not come as his car had the check engine light on. So some other lady came. And she was the worst instructor one could ever get. She kept yelling at me, took the steering in her hand in between while i was driving, braked from her side suddenly. She just kept talking and yelling, especially "wait 3 seconds at stop sign". By the time i started my test, i had already lost my head. I was not thinking straight. As expected, i jumped the first stop sign and was an immediate disqualification. I cannot say how bad an experience it was. My entire day got ruined because of this, and especially I lost my driving confidence. read more
