We chose to sit inside (the AC is still on pretty high, fyi) We got the uni ikura don and the kaishin don. It does look deceivingly big in the pictures, they are about the size of a small bowl. Absolutely the freshest sashimi I've had in NYC!! Everything was delicious. I loved the chirashi bowl - the salmon was my favorite, it was fatty and just melted in your mouth. The chawanmushi was a great appetizer, with hot steamed egg and a savory broth. The mentai pasta was so creamy, and the bacon paired well with it. I even liked their green salad! The vegetables were so fresh, and I loved the yuzu wasabi dressing that came with it. Overall I must recommend this restaurant if you're looking to splurge a bit on high-quality Japanese food. The wagyu was so flavorful and they have a broth to eat the left over rice with! the kaishin don was out of this world and it was well worth the price for the amount of fish, roe & uni. we loved making our little hand rolls with it! I didn't want the bites to end The ikura wasn't too salty and the rice wasn't sticky or too vinegary-- just right. Nori was crispyy. This place has been all over my Tiktok and I never wanted to schlep over here but since my friend and I were in the neighborhood to get our nails done we decided to stop by. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance because they do get kind of busy. The place itself isn't huge so it definitely can feel a little cramped at times. The staff was very friendly and nice even though we were a bit late to our reservation. The menu was fairly large and they do have seasonal special items which comes in a whole separate menu. I will say their cocktails are on the stronger side so keep that in mind when you do order them. We decided to share everything: -Ozakaya Donburi Set: This portion was much large than we expected since the bowl was super deep and it came with a lot of fish on top and we did not even add on the Uni or King Crab. They teach you how to eat it and you can make your own handrolls and when you are down to the last 1/3 they come and add soup into the dish. It tasted pretty similar to the one that I had in Japan - I highly recommend ordering this if you come here. -Waygu Hitsumabushi: This was just alright - the wagyu was very tender but it did not taste super special. There is three different ways to eat this dish which they do explain, the first is just with the added egg, then with egg and added seasonings and last with all the above and soup. -Mentai Paste: This portion size was not huge but it was very yummy, nice and creamy and the bacon was perfectly crispy. We finally got lucky with a short wait time and ate here a couple weeks ago and fell in love with the chirashi bowl, which they also offered with a soup after you finish about 2/3 of the fish in the bowl. The restaurant is very dimly lit, creating the perfect atmosphere for a cute date night or a nice place to take friends or family. The fall menu offers a few amazing tastes, which vary from the standard menu, including the Wagyu and the nabe with seafood. Though they serve a menu of classic Japanese staples (donburi, karaage, sushi, etc), what made me sense this restaurant was a step above other Japanese restaurants was the presentation of their dishes and the vibe inside. It's a little bit nicer than a takeaway Japanese spot. I was first introduced to Ozakaya at Plate by Plate, a tasting benefit, where I tried their Donburi with Hokkaido Uni and I was instantly blown away . The seafood was unbelievably fresh, and the uni was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. Two months later, I finally visited the restaurant and it exceeded every expectation I ordered the Donburi Set with Hokkaido Uni and King Crab Uni (something I've been dreaming about, ask my friends, I would not stop talking about it ). We also tried the Wagyu Hitsumabushi Set and Miyazaki Wagyu Roll, and wow . The Wagyu Hitsumabushi came with seared A5 Wagyu, egg yolk, scallions, rice crackers, wasabi, and a light bonito broth. Pim recommended enjoying it multiple ways, but my favorite was with the broth--it added such a refreshing umami depth. I even poured in the rest and drank it like soup LOL. For drinks, we had the Yuzu Drop and Natsu Hanna . The Yuzu Drop was bright and tangy, while the Natsu Hanna was light and refreshing with a subtle strawberry sweetness, and the flower on top made it so beautiful. We ended with the Oshiruko dessert (toasted mochi with red bean sauce and matcha ice cream) . The matcha was bold but not too sweet, the red bean paired perfectly, and the warm crispy mochi tied it all together. Came here on a Saturday night. Didn't have reservations but was lucky to score a table outdoors. They are pretty strict about no outside food/drinks and asked me to put away my Starbucks drink. Had nowhere to put it so I just end up leaving it on the floor next to our chair. I understand that's a common policy with restaurants but it still left a damper to the experience. Also, service is subpar -- our waitress legit wore sunglasses the whole time serving us. We were outside but it wasn't even that sunny -- it was 7pm. It only bothered me slightly because it seemed so impersonal. Menu is pretty extensive and everything sounded delicious. Ordered the salmon ceviche, A5 wagyu nabe, and Kaishin don. The food was indeed mouth watering good, fresh, and good quality. However, portions aren't big so after 3 dishes, $140 poorer, we left still hungry and on the hunt for another meal. However, the food was delicious and would definitely come back to try the rest of the menu. Disappointed we didn't get to dine inside -- the interior, especially the patio looks beautiful. Impeccable friendly service, a warm hand towel on arrival, beautiful ambiance, an infamous heated bidet in the bathroom (yes, for those curious), and a menu that takes 10 minutes to decide from all of the delicious options. Like many restaurants we eat nowadays in NYC, my SO found this place via social media - specifically the wagyu hot stone grill videos. Making reservations was easy via Resy and would highly recommend having them because this restaurant is quite popular. Definitely recommend sitting in the back patio area if there's availability, as it's nice to get some natural sunlight if the sun is still out.
