I liked the purple yam fries since i've never had that before and the chew and texture and flavor was different from the usual fry. Everything before the ramen and beers feel kind of pricey and this place is cash only and the broth base is not the usual pork base but chicken base. The amount of noodles is decent and the toppings are pretty good the egg actually come with both half's rather than one like some places so that's good, my only gripe is that the cha siu isn't heated through after being served which tells me that they didn't torch it for long enough before serving. That usually also makes it less tender as the middle is still a little coagulated from being chilled prior. I would also assume that chicken broth is less calorie dense than pork so I also felt less guilty drinking it all. I've come to appreciate this place. For the longest time they were paused from opening due to covid but it's a nice addition to the neighborhood. It may very well be the most reliable ramen-ya in the area. They have some off kilter ramens like the black garlic and red something, which is always a good time and they have a pool hall on the 2nd floor. I haven't partaken yet, but it's $20/hour per table, which is good if you're with a group. I do want to point your attention to the experimental menu though. It's been "experimental" for years now, so it's just an extension, but the cheese items are hella delicious. We bought them on a whim due to the excitement of a birthday celebration and they ended up being the rave of the table. Particularly the chicken katsu with cheese and fried shrimp balls with cheese. Not the exact names but descriptive enough for you to find it on the menu. I LIKED the shrimp balls the most. They shrimp flavor was very robust and paired nicely with the sweet white cheese. Hot as hell when you bite into it though, so poke a hole in it first, or let a friend you don't like to try it first. THEY LIKED the other dish more. It was very heavy in a gritty cheesy flavor. This place has great service. Wasn't particularly fond of the food I tried here. Had the ramen. Portion was small. Noodles were overly chewy. Egg was way too soft. It melted into the broth even before I got to taste it. The protein was bits of minced pork which didn't really bring anything to the dish. It was brightened up by lots of shredded scallion (green onion) on top. Portion was just too small, I left hungry. Ambiance. Very nicely decorated throughout the restaurant. Bottles of colorful liquors decorate one wall. In front, a large high walled bar, dominates. The upper part of the chefs can be seen cooking, sometimes only their head can be seen, so not a great view. The alcove for the bathroom has 2 bathrooms. The one on the right is a much bigger and nicer looking. The smaller on the left has a huge beer keg inside, used as a lower cabinet for the faucet. Also tried the pan fried dumplings. Really sweet and efficient staff that spoke English and Mandarin. This is a cash only restaurant , and the interior is pretty spacious and open with lots of seating. It supposedly says sushi and ramen on the menu and there's a big space up from near the front that says experimental sushi bar but there's no sushi on the menu. I got the one tsukemen dish on the menu, which you can get less spicy ($14) I think. Overall the dish was a really decently portion with a hefty amount of noodles - I think the amount of butter and then the addition of truffle oil threw me off. Spot is spacious, clean and nicely renovated. The service was all over the place, started out well with one server then everything went downfall after ordering. The food was underwhelming and was frustrating trying to flag staff down for basic service. The seared salmon with yuzu and spicy garlic oil appetizer has so much potential. The yuzu was so light, the dish needed so much more acidity to balance the unnecessary warm fish, and spicy oil. The salmon would have been better off raw instead of seared and their homemade garlic oil was not impressive. Japanese Mixed Fries seemed like a good choice but you're really just getting a few pieces of purple fries covered with a lot of regular potato fries. The sauces reflects the uneven ratio as well. It's nice to finally have a decent ramen restaurant in the neighborhood. I really enjoyed the Ajimi kuro ramen that we got. The chashu pork was so delicious and the broth was flavorful! Note: there are large pieces of onion in the broth. I didn't mind since I thought it added a nice crunchy texture to the ramen but just an fyi if it's not your thing. I saw a lot of reviews recommend the mazeman ramen so we tried that as well but I was not a fan. It was too heavy and the flavor of the parmesan cheese did not match with the rest of the ingredients. The appetizers that we got were all tasty, albeit pricey given the portions served. Loved the chicken and beef skewers, takoyaki, and fried oysters. Service was good. There was one very friendly waiter who went above and beyond in ensuring that we had a good dining experience. When we initially walked in, another waitress wanted us to sit in the back, which we refused, and the friendly waiter was able to quickly score us a table in the front. Modern Izakaya with great whiskey selection. My wife and I came here for drinks and some light fare on a Wednesday night. It was pretty quiet here. Only a few tables occupied. I've never had it before so I opted for a pour to see what the hype was about. I finished with the Hakushu 12. Definitely the best selection that I've seen sort of Church Avenue. For food, we split a bunch of apps Izakaya style. We had the vegetable gyoza, the shrimp and squid skewers, the takoyaki, and the fries. All the items were good. Perfect bar food. All savory with bits of saltiness and spiciness considered for each dish. The service was excellent. The waiter was attentive and very knowledgeable. Izakaya Ajimi brings St Marks to Brooklyn with an extensive bar menu that includes Japanese whiskey, sake, and beer. In true izakaya fashion, you can find a nice list ranging from meat to seafood and even veggies in their "yakikushi" AKA yakitori menu. I ordered takoyaki, shrimp yakikushi, UWO and miso ramen and an asahi. One thing that I appreciate is that the chopsticks were considerately tucked away in the tissue so that it doesn't touch the table. The beer was also served in a frosty glass. The takoyaki and shrimp yakikushi were also very tasty! The ramen was pretty authentic with generous amounts of chashu. Everything was very good. The skewers, especially the pork one, was so good that we ended up ordering seconds. They are very generous with the amount of octopus in the takoyaki. The fries were good, but they could have cooked them a little longer. I liked the subtle truffle taste and the purple sweet potato part on the fries. As for the ramen, it was not bad, a bit too salty for my liking. The chashu was really soft and delicious. I was surprised how big this restaurant is.
