This small neighborhood gem has been around for years and I've visited a few times for lunch and dinner. The food is consistently good and high quality, made with fresh ingredients. They've developed such a local following that you can always expect a line of patrons waiting to dine. This time I went with cousins who are near weekly regulars. Their trick is to visit Hibino midweek before the restaurant opens to ensure immediate seating. We waited for about 20 minutes before they opened their doors and were the last group of people to enter before they were completely full. My cousin always gets the Grilled Salmon Collar Bento and raved about it, so the rest of us got the same and promptly cleaned them out of their stock of salmon collars. One of us had to choose a different menu item, so the Beef Short Ribs was selected. We also ordered some tuna and uni sushi to start. Everything we ordered had good flavors and textures, and gave me comfort food vibes. It was like eating Japanese home cooking, but what also stands out is how fresh everything tastes. Food: We decided to try this place because it has great reviews and also heard from others that it's good, but we were pretty disappointed with the food and overall experience. We ordered the house made tofu, squash tempura, mackerel in a miso broth, and the Hibino sushi plate. My favorite dish was the house made tofu which is served with ginger, scallion, and a sauce. The presentation of the tofu was cute. It served in a small jar with little spoons. The tofu was very silky and fresh almost like a custard consistency. The other three dishes, however, were very underwhelming. The mackerel was nothing special and parts were a bit dry. The squash tempura was tasty but a little bit soggy because it's soaking in a broth. The sushi was the most disappointing thing I would have expected very high-quality sushi from a place that specializes in Japanese foods, but it was not good. The fish was just okay and didn't seem like high-quality fish and the rice was also too mushy . This is probably some of the most disappointing sushi I've had in a while. Service: The staff were overall friendly, but I was not happy that they took away our dishes assuming that we were done without asking. Our house made tofu in the jar was not finished and they abruptly took it away so we weren't even able to finish it. Ambiance: The restaurant is not that big, but they have a lot of tables and can likely accommodate large groups by putting a smaller tables together. There were a few fruit flies flying around our food throughout the whole meal, which was a bit unenjoyable as well. Seat is not that spacious and you're pretty much two inches away from the next table so space is tight. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant and won't be returning. read more

Hibino is a nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant in an assuming space just south of Atlantic Ave. They have roughly 15 tables, it fills up pretty quickly for parties of two or four. They only take walk-ins, so prepare for a 15-20 minute wait during peak hours. No reservations if you're looking to dine in, to be explicit. The staff is great, they are friendly and incredibly efficient. It seems like they are always on the move, making the most of the small space to get service out to all the diners. The food is good, I really liked their octopus appetizer special when I went (NOT takoyaki). And the tonkatsu dish was solid, the pork cutlet was both crispy and juicy, and went well with the sauce and the Japanese mustard. It's certainly not cheap, but you get quality food from a lovely, smaller operation. Hibino has been on my list for a while, so we decided to try it out on a weekday around 6:30pm. Surprisingly there were a bunch of open tables and we got seated really quickly. Having come back from Kyoto recently, we were happy to see the obanzai daily specials. We ordered the salmon tekka and the pork dish. They were both good, but there was no wow factor. We also ordered the sashimi platter and the spicy tuna roll. The sashimi platter pieces were quite small for the price. The rolls were on the bigger side though, and the spicy sauce tasted great. This restaurant came highly recommended by my boss. I ordered takeout of an eel cucumber roll and a yellowtail scallion roll. I appreciated that the toast app had a estimated wait time that they communicated. My food was done 10 minutes before the estimated time which was nice. As you wait there are two chairs available for people who are waiting for their orders or for a table to dine in. If you order online, they have post it notes that they put on the window whenever your order is ready. I appreciate the attentiveness of the staff that checked in on me from time to time. However, once my food came, my sushi rolls were unraveling the moment they handed it to me. I didn't even step away from the restaurant and when i checked the bag I noticed that they were not connecting. Ya gotta love sushi. It's been a while since we've visited Hibino, so it seemed like a good reservation to snag. They get packed (and for good reason) so plan in advance. Service is excellent and properly attentive. We started with the tuna tataki salad which was excellent and full of flavor. The tuna portion was generous and enough to share. Sharing our mains was also part of our plan so we went for a chefs sushi special (including a roll - yellowtail scallion), 2 pieces of toro (heaven for $10 a piece) and the fried eel roll (scrumptious and not heavy despite the frying). The cloudy house sake was really a treat - not too sweet or heavy. As a whole, we enjoyed our date night with excellent fish and flavors. A good spot to hit if you've forgotten about them. read more

This was the first place my friend took me out to when visiting New York for the first time. The two sushi rolls I ordered for the Sushi Combo lunch were the Salmon with Avocado and Eel with Avocado and both were absolutely delicious. The fish here was incredibly fresh and tasty. The meal came with a miso soup and salad. All of the food I had was amazing. I loved everything about it! The service was also amazing as our waiter was very attentive to our needs. Everyone was very friendly. We came here around lunch time on a Wednesday and there were many seats available and open for anyone wanting to come here on a lunch break. I'm surprised I've never written a review for this place. I've been here a whole lot of times with the only reason being that I'm not here weekly is because of the price point. The food overall here has been outstanding and they have a couple dishes here that you just don't find in most Japanese spots. They seem to specialize in obanzai, or essentially Kyoto tapas, and they also have really good tofu along with other fantastic dishes. The staff here is very friendly and they are careful with Covid precautions. In terms of drinks, they have a few beers along with a changing sake selection. I got a daily sake special called kinka a Daiginjo Nama sake which had a pleasant sweetness and aftertaste. In terms of lunch, I have gotten the tekka don and the O-bento box. Said tekka don (or tuna don) was fantastic with very high quality tuna over rice with some shredded egg omelette. It might be a bit more than some other places but you're paying for very high-quality fish and I would recommend it. The O-bento box changes very often but in general it consists of a dish of the day along with one of their obanzai and it is served with salad, miso soup, and rice (of course.) In this case I chose kurobuta sausage which was fine and the main dish was simmered squash in this case which was very tasty. In terms of dinner I have been here twice. Both times I went with a main dish with the Teishoku or set menu as an add-on. Said add-on includes your choice of one of the daily mini obanzai along with a miso soup and rice. The two obanzai I have had have been the grilled salted mackerel or saba shioyaki and the Salmon chan chan yaki. The former was fine. Said salmon chan chan yaki or のちゃんちゃん焼き consisted of miso grilled salmon with potato, asparagus, and cabbage. The salmon was perfectly cooked and there was a light sweetness as expected. I would highly recommend if this was on a ever-changing obanzai menu. In terms of main dishes I have had the beef kakuni and the latter time I had the tonkatsu. The beef kakuni or braised beef short ribs in a soy umami sauce was outstanding. This is usually a pork belly dish and their take using short rib makes sense and it is very tasty. The beef was very tender and it was served with some outstanding tofu (enough so that I kind of want to ask whether I can just get a pound of this) as well as a couple pieces of okra. The tonkatsu or fried pork cutlet is also very good. It was quite a thick pork cutlet and it was very moist throughout and it was served with the usual accompaniments; a sour sauce and cabbage with ginger dressing. I have zero complaints about that dish though I do wish there was an option with curry as (as curry katsu is delicious of course.) This is also recommended and a bit cheaper than the beef. Overall I love this place. Sure the prices are higher than most of the other Japanese places around here but the quality of the food is so much better that I really don't mind. There has been 0 bad dishes here and in some cases, they were outstanding. I do think they should add some type of tofu dish to the lunch menu so more people try it but otherwise I really can't think of anything else to add outside of perhaps a curry katsu. My fiancée and I came here for Valentine's Day dinner. We never knew this place existed until recently. It's definitely very authentic Japanese food. Service: the service here is really good and the waitress here are very attentive. Food: we went with Hibino Sushi Plate ($30), Anago Hako Sushi ($20) and Beef Kakuni ($18). Came back again to Hibino cause it's just a great spot to get lunch! Today I was about to travel so I got a meal stipend from work and decided to treat myself on a craving I've been having: katsu. Unfortunately katsu is one of Hibino's pricier items and it did not live that price up to me. Portion was quite small, and the breading just fell off of the pork. The location is great - a corner spot on Henry street in Cobble Hill. The decor is basic, but works well. It has the feel of a comfortable, closely-held operation. Very much to my dismay, I really did not care for the food at all. I felt as though the chef's choice sashimi plate was mostly bland and generic. It also seemingly lost one of the varieties that it should have had - a fifteen piece plate on the menu somehow became thirteen in reality. The edamame was mediocre, as were the pickled vegetables. Service was friendly, polite, and sufficiently attentive to make that aspect of the experience one without complaint. The wheat beer they offered on the menu was probably the highlight of the food and drink. Unfortunately, I won't be back. First time visiting Hibino, a small Japanese restaurant on Henry Street just south of Atlantic Avenue. Currently there is no sit-down dining, so order online for takeout. They stick a post-it note with your name on it in the window when your order is ready. I got a two-roll lunch special and ate it in the shade nearby. The salmon avocado roll was soft and sensual, dancing delicately on my tongue. The eel cucumber roll was sweet, with a satisfying crunch. Washed it down with miso soup, which was delightful! You gotta try that soup. I was a little disappointed that the lunch menu doesn't feature the home-made tofu that this place is famous for. There's a reason this spot always has a wait (they do not take reservations). It's the best sushi in the area and some of the best in NYC. I recently went on a trip to Japan and visiting Hibino reminded me of the amazing sushi I had, especially in Kyoto. It's the only restaurant I can think of that has that distinctive Kyoto-style "box pressed" sushi known as Hako (see my pic). They have other favorites from that area such as Tekka Don (also see my pic), Obanzai "Japanese tapas" etc. Whatever you order, it will be served to perfection, with excellent service in a relaxed atmosphere. I had been going to Hibino for about 15 yrs and I used to love it; I went there weekly to have their lunch specials for $12 (March 2020 price). I know everyone had a hard time with the pandemic and I know everything is more expensive now but the lunch special price has skyrocketed from $12 in early 2020 to $20 in May 2024 ( rolls special) That is a 66% increase. Their place also looks dingy, paint peeling off, their supplies are all in plain view making it a disorganized place. Sorry Hibino, I have left you for Sushi Lin in BH. Cute little spot with a daily special obanzai menu so there's always something new the next time you go. Their homemade tofu is delicate and delicious. The miso salmon is buttery and rich. Their sashimi combo came with a side of rice? But it worked out because the miso salmon by default does not. The sashimi was sliced a little thick for my liking but that's a minor point. How can you not fall in love with Hibino?! It's a secret neighborhood gem tucked between Henry and Pacific street in Brooklyn. This is my second visit here and it has not yet failed to impress. My favorite is their lunch box, for $10 it included choices of entree for the day, mini Obanzai, soup, pickles and salad. While the daily specials are something to consider as well. I tried grilled pork sausage and tonkatsu Pork cutlet and both dishes are delicious and since it's an open kitchen, it is prepared right before our very eyes. I don't know how I'd never been to this place before now! It is quite pricey at dinner but a $12 bento box is certainly affordable. Started off with a nice miso soup and moved on to the bento. You have a choice of main, several of them had already been sold out but I went with the shrimp and fish croquettes. The bento came with a nice amount of flavorful rice, salad, some kind of vegetable set, pickled veggies, a salad and the main. Everything was more than fine apart from the croquettes which were exquisite! Light but not flakey batter, nice chunks of shrimp, not super fishy but very flavorful. I rarely write bad reviews, but this place really upset me. My phone was dead so I came in to order take out. The host told me to wait outside so the "real customers" can come in. In all honesty I believe what he meant was the "white customers." After waiting for 15 minutes while he chatted with many patrons and even the UPS guy, I waved at him. He barked at me that he knows and proceeded to ignore me. Really sad to feel ignored and dismissed. Unique flavors, good quality food, but uneven dining experience. Hibino is tucked away in the corner of in an unassuming Brooklyn heights neighborhood and the interior is warm, welcoming. We came in late on a Sunday night and the place was crowded. The server told us we could wait outside where they have some chairs set up. Heads up for those sensitive to the cold. We took a few laps around the block and came back and were seated quickly. Unfortunately it then took 10 minutes to get water and 15 before a waitress came to our table (and the one next to ours) for the first time. It gets busy here and depending on when you're seated could mean a significant wait. We ordered the beef kakuni appetizer, fresh made tofu, and two sushi rolls. The tofu here is really incredible! Firm but somehow delicate at the same time. The soy sauce and ginger that comes with it is a perfect flavor. This was my favorite dish and it comes in a beautiful jar. With a vibrant atmosphere with dim lighting, the combination of small tables and an open bar created a lounge-like feel to the restaurant. The air was stuffy upon entry, but it gradually gave way to the cold air blasting from the A/C unit above our heads. The wait time was a reasonable 15-20 minutes, but patrons were still waiting for tables as it approached 10pm. The biggest selling point for this trek to Hibino were the obanzai dishes for $4 each (thanks to Yelpers' recommendations), The pork skewers were tender and juicy, but there wasn't too much lean meat to speak of. The tri-color yam noodles had a ramen-like consistency, which made it fun to try (as long as one don't expect any yam taste). The sushi rolls (salmon avocado and negi toro) were fresh but a bit heavy on the rice. Also, one should be cautioned that the soy sauce very salty as we automatically assumed we would be given the low sodium version. How presumptuous! The fresh (home)made tofu was served warm in a small jar, and it had a very smooth texture. It was suitably complemented by a sauce in a separate container. A friend ordered the chirashi, which came with a solid assortment of raw and cooked fish, including uni. However, since when did places start serving chirashi with duck? It seemed odd and the chirashi felt impure (to me personally). 100 for 3 people including tax and tip seemed reasonable for all this food (including a glass of great tasting sake and bottle of Yebisu beer). Note that Hibino accepts credit cards but not accept American Express. In the end, it was good first-time experience with awesome drinks and atmosphere, but a mixed opinion on the food. People rave about this place, but I'm just not sure. What I had on my first visit was alright, but I was not blown away. My friends suggested I start with the miso soup... and that it would change my life. Well, sad to say, it definitely did not do that--it was just alright. Sure, it had onions added to it, but whoopdeedoo =) For an appetizer, I ordered their special tempura lobster roll. I'm not sure if it was even real lobster meat. It had absolutely no flavor. Finally, for my main entrée, I had the pork katsu (Tonkatsu on the menu). While the pork was plump and lean cut, it was kind of dry, which made it not that great. Plus, it was served at room temperature... and I was expecting it to be served steaming hot. I will say that the restaurant was packed, which makes sense because this is a popular place.... and perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing. I still really enjoy this place and love it dearly. I returned here for dinner to have another taste of their fresh homemade tofu. I tried the cold and the warm versions. Yes, one is cold and the other is warm, those are the biggest differences. However, due to the heat the texture of the tofu also tastes different. The warm tofu is much more silky and smooth, more of a " melt in your mouth" taste. The cold tofu has more texture and is not as smooth. I feel it has a little more character since you can really taste the tofu. This version tastes more "homemade". Both were served with a scallion and ginger garnish as well as with a light and savory pouring sauce. My boyfriend decided he liked the warm tofu better. Meanwhile, I think that I will let the temperature of the season determine whether I will have cold or warm. I knocked out 1 star due to the fact that our pork katsu was disappointing. It was dry, hard, and overcooked. I also had the mackerel box press style sushi. The flavor was great - salty fish with fresh shiso leaf - but it fell apart quite easily and was hard to eat. It wasn't too bad for us, but we were also one of the last groups to be seated for the night (they close at 10 on weeknights and 10:30 on Friday/Saturday). Their obanzai (Kyoto style tapas) menu is unique, with a changing selection on their blackboards. We ordered a soft-shell shrimp roll, and a lobster roll from the list. Didn't know soft-shell crab was a thing, but it was delicious, even with the heads on and their tiny dead eyes staring back at you. The lobster roll was good, but very typical of Americanized sushi (too much sauce!). We ordered the yellowtail sashimi as well as tobiko (flying fish roe) from the sashimi menu (really just a small individual portion of roe). My friends who recently visited Japan definitely gave their seal of approval to the sashmi. We also started out with two types of tofu. Their fresh made tofu is served in a tiny jar with dashi sauce on the side. Velvetty and delicious.
