I was craving carbonara and it was after midnight. I almost gave up hope thinking nothing would be open and my cravings wouldn't go unfulfilled. But at last, as I searched on DoorDash I stumbled upon this glorious restaurant they call Izakaya Fuku. I was drawn to the adorable names for their sushi roll dishes like "Strawberry Fields" and their Italian Japanese fusion pasta dishes, "Creamy Mentaiko Bacon Pasta" with creamy mayonnaise, spicy cod roe and bacon like are you kidding me? It's a bummer I wasn't more hunger or that I didn't have more bucks in my wallet because I wanted all these dishes. And the Chirashi Don, god it looks so beautiful the way that it's arranged in the photos online. I finally decided on the carbonara. And I was drawn to the fact that it was udon based. Now, I've just been living in hawaii these past years so that Japanese twist on an Italian dish that I just love oh so much really brought me back to missing the islands and the Asian spins they had on cuisines. Now my food may have not come in a jiffy but for after midnight cravings I'd say it was well worth the wait. And my oh my the portion was huge!!!! I slurped that big boy up. So this place is small and charming, dark and well I hate to say it (cus it sounds cliche now) but it's a vibe. For real. From the decor to the music to its surroundings. She's a gem. the creamy zuwaikani pasta is so good if i come back im always ordering it. the snow crab definitely isn't super fresh and smells slightly fishy but when you get a mouthful of it with the spicy cod roe pasta it is so good. theres a lot more acidity than expected maybe from the lemon juice but it contrasts nicely with the creaminess. service is friendly and fast and space is fun. read more

Food was flavorful here. The beef Tongue didn't taste like tongue if that makes sense. It almost tasted like a thicker thinly sliced brisket from a KBBQ spot. Well marinated and seasoned (think charred, salt, pepper, and soy sauce flavors) comes topped with scallions, a wasabi lemon sauce, and lemon to top it off. The noodles is sort of a Japanese take on Carbonara, my wife whose Italian liked it and so did I. The bento box is quite filling it comes with a plethora of items, would recommend getting it..comes with a flavorful mayo sauce that I can quite put my finger on the flavors that come out of it. But think Kewpie mayo mixed with lemon and dill. Service was good as most people who came in after us were ordering take out. Ambiance is really cool, reminds you of a Tokyo diner/bar. I have been to Izakaya Fuku twice. The last time was with a friend who had returned the day before from her native Japan: when she is there, she does not eat out at a place such as this often, which explains why after coming back from the origin of the cuisine she would be interested in going for it in NYC. I would put Izakaya Fuku up against any other izakaya in the borough and in the city. It is excellent. What is most remarkable is how extensive the menu is, plus the specials listed on makeshift posters all over the walls (which adds to the charm, and it is great to know they spontaneously have these items to add). On the earlier trip, we had none of the raw fish. This time, however, we tried the sashimi sampler. I'd rate is as excellent. I am no expert. The truth is, if I were to guess, the fish was every so slightly older than at the very best (and overpriced) fancier venues. But it was still fresh and high quality. I would not hesitate for a moment. Within Queens, which I love but which I would not say is known for Japanese restaurants in particular (versus, say, Chinese in Flushing or Greek in Astoria or Himalayan not far from here), I'd put it in the top quartile, for the sushi offerings, and that would be against places that are specializing in sushi without everything else. Izakaya Fuku earns highest marks for the pub dishes. That is what an izakaya is: a pub. If you considered both how extensive the range is and the quality, it again ranks toward the top. Only just range, I doubt any izakaya will exceed their breadth. In terms of quality, there was not a single item I would have any objection to consuming repeatedly. That included ankimo, octopus, saba (mackerel), and pasta. We also had two pitchers of beer among the three of us. The prices were reasonable. The service was brisk. People were having fun. The only caution I'd offer is this is not a quiet, sedate setting. But an izakaya, a pub, is not meant to be. This is not for bringing a book as a solo diner. It is for a party. read more

This is a great izakaya spot! It's small inside but it feels cozy and the decor is great. It feels like you're being transported to a local Japanese pub. The food is also delicious. Izakaya-style food is usually small portions but that means you can try more things and there's certainly a lot of things to try on the menu! The karaage was one of my favorites - meaty chunks of chicken that were perfectly fried. They also have several mentaiko items on the menu and we just had to try a few of them. The fries were super crispy and the mentaiko sauce paired well. The creamy mentai bacon udon was heavier for sure and the udon was on the softer side. I would order this again but the pasta version. The spicy cod roe onigiri was on the fishier side and to be honest, by the end of all these mentaiko dishes - I was mentaiko'd out haha. Also, I'd highly recommend the ramen! I did not expect the ramen to be as good as it was. They don't have an extensive ramen menu and maybe that's why it was so good. I tried both the black garlic and the spicy tonkatsu and they were flavored really well. The portions are also very generous. After a few bites, it was getting to be on the salty side but I would still order these again. Highly recommend visiting and this is an izakaya spot that I would come back to! An exquisite izakaya experience and worth the price! First of all, the decor is straight out of Tokyo. The wall art, memorabilia and even the bathrooms seem like they were transported from Japan. Even some Japanese pop music played in the background to give you all the vibes. The servers were attentive and friendly. The food was amazing, and worth the price. We had the salmon nigiri, the grilled yellow tail, and the octopus salad. All were amazing! The extensive sake menu was great too, and a bottle is ideal for sharing with a group of 2-3 friends. Short review/recommendations: Creamy Mentai Bacon Udon, all sashimi, Gyu Tan, unagi don if you want a bigger dish. I was at this izakaya a good while ago with a group having heard great things about this place. The place is pretty small and had a nice atmosphere with friendly wait staff. To drink I had the Ozeki "Yamadanishiki" Tokubetsu Junmai which is $15 for 250 ml which was a pretty good rich and dry sake though a little bit pricey. A bit more reasonable compared to quality would be the excellent Kurasawa Junami Kimoto which is nicely available in either a smaller 300ml bottle for $21 or a full size for $50 which I would probably go with next time (the mini one of course.) All alcohol aside, the food overall was excellent. We first got a couple types of raw fish to share and the portions are decent for all the sashimi as they all come with five pieces. The Sake/Salmon Sashimi for $10.95 was buttery and very tasty with large plump pieces of salmon and I would recommend it. The other people there also ordered the Octopus/Tako Sashimi for $11.95 as well which they thought was excellent and I saw that it indeed looked quite good though I couldn't eat it. We also got the Hamachi Yuzu Kosho or yellowtail, scallion and Japanese spice with soy sauce and sake for $14.95 from the carpaccio section which was also very tasty. Good quality yellowtail which wasn't overpowered by the spice ferment. Also arriving earlier was the Fried Kibinago or deep-fried silver-stripe round herring with mayo for $7.95 which came with five pieces also I believe. The herring had a good fry which wasn't too oily with a good crisp batter and a lightly fishy flavor and it would make a good bar snack with or without the mayo. The final smaller fish dish was the Sake Kama or grilled salmon collar for $13.95. I tend to compare a lot of salmon collars to the pricey but excellent Hibino by me but this was solid with good quality buttery salmon and excellent grill marks Also grilled but not fish was the Gyu Tan or grilled beef tongue for $9.95 which came with a few pieces topped with scallion. The tongue was tender and I would recommend it. Also grilled and pretty solid was the Garlic Soy Skirt Steak marinated with sake for $18.95 making it one of the more expensive dishes. The skirt steak was pretty tender and came pre-sliced on the rarer end with some mustard and wasabi on the side. It was good but less notable than many of their other dishes so I would save money and share other things instead. The best dish of the night among all the good dishes was the Creamy Mentai Bacon Udon or udon with creamy mayonnaise spicy cod roe and bacon for $14.95. Most spots when making mentaiko pasta either don't add enough mentaiko so it's bland or add too much mayo but they got it perfectly balanced here with just the right amount of salt with the only place I think doing a better job being Lucky Cat in Midtown East. There were plenty of chewy noodles with a lot of the addictive salty fishy topping. While the bacon wasn't necessary, it added a little smokiness/sweetness and I would definitely go back and get more of their wafu pastas which they had a lot of in terms of specials and seem to still. The last dish we shared was the Unagi Don or grilled whole eel over Japanese rice with egg roll and pickle for $30.95. There was plenty of well grilled eel which wasn't overly sweet compared to some other spots. If you're looking for a main dish after some sashimi or an appetizer or something, I would recommend this one though it would be better to share. The "egg roll" or tamagoyaki was just alright but the flavor of the eel made it worth it even being the most expensive dish on the menu. As an extra, I ordered the Yaka Mentai Mayo for $6.95 as I liked their other mentaiko dish but this was probably my least favorite thing. The mentaiko lost a lot of the fishiness when grilled so the onigiri/rice ball was a bit bland. Would probably just go with the normal salted plum/umeboshi filling next time which is both two bucks cheaper and would probably work better. Outside of the rice ball mishap, I really don't have many complaints for this place. Everything was solid and the prices were reasonable. A cute and cozy Japanese restaurant serving up delicious food in Queens! I came in for an early dinner and chose to get their chili garlic Hokkaido hotatae pasta and it was so good! The three scallops I got were big, tender, and flavorful. The pasta was garlicky and had a good kick of spice from the chili peppers. I liked that there were roasted garlic pieces mixed into the pasta as well so you got a good amount of garlic flavor. Service was fast and the servers were attentive and friendly and the atmosphere overall was vibrant and relaxed. Visited this spot around 8-9 PM on a Saturday night with some friends. The spot has a nice ambiance and is very cozy, warm, and intimate - great for a small group. There was no wait when we arrived, but keep in mind that it is CASH only! Parking was a bit difficult the night we went but not impossible to find. The service was amazing and the waiters and waitresses were extremely attentive, constantly refilling our water and stopping by the table to clean plates and trash. Food was delivered to the table in a timely manner as well. We tried many dishes shown in the pictures below. The Tako wasabi had a nice kick and the takoyaki was delicious. The creamy mentai udon pasta with bacon was a favorite, as well as the ika teriyaki don. And of course you can never go wrong with the Karaage. Really happy that I found Izakaya Fuku and I plan on coming back often. I really enjoy the food and the menu has something for everyone. The last time I ordered their udon carbonara - which was lush and so flavorful. It was also such a filling portion and it truly didn't need anything. The texture of their noodles really is what makes their dishes so good. I then tried the yakisoba noodles, which are now my favorite. The sauce is so well balanced and the noodles are like ramen noodles but with such a good chew. Really enjoyed the appetizers as well, I thought for a moment I would have to ask for more sauce for the calamari but it was so rich and fatty that it lasted for the whole dish. The sausages were cooked perfectly and had such a good smoky flavor to them. I also recommend getting one of their sodas, the yuzu will become a hyper fixation for me. The service is prompt and polite. They sat us down right away and checked in multiple times to make sure we were enjoying everything. The ambiance is so cool. Like a Christmas bar meets a beautiful restaurant in Japan with a little edge. They played all of my favorite oldies and we found ourselves singing the whole time. When my party of two arrived at 9pm on a Saturday night we were seated right away. The space isn't huge but it prob seats around 30-35 people, and able to seat maybe a party of 6-7 together at the most. The place was about half full when we arrived and about 70% full when we left. First time here and we went with the: - grilled teriyaki squid $13.95: a full squid grilled and doused with teriyaki sauce, nice grill flavor, maybe slight overcooked so it was a bit on rubbery side but still very meaty. - shio saba bento box $15.95: this mackerel set had a bit of everything, two decent sized pieces of chicken karaage (Japanese style fried chicken), kani (imitation crab) salad, a Berkshire pork sausage link, half a soft boiled ramen egg, crunchy green and red cabbage, and rice. - chili garlic Hokkaido hotatae (scallop) pasta $23.95: yumm! Prob our favorite dish of the evening, this has a spicy kick and lots of roast garlic pieces. The scallops were a little underdone but nothing concerning, very tender and flavorful! Would def recommend the bento box and pasta, I will be back to try some other items too, the menu looked appealing overall. Extra half star for keeping it affordable in this day and age. Staff are friendly though our particular waitress had limited English proficiency, enough to take our orders so no other issue there. Staff came by to refill water a few times, and ask how we were doing. The Zuwaikani pasta was elite -- so YUMMY!! Spicy, creamy, and with a strong umami taste from the snow crab. It tasted like tomalley (the mustardy substance inside a crab). Adding some lemon elevated the dish and counteracted the seafoody taste, which was an absolute game changer!! Only thing was that it's a little too spicy for my taste. Presentation was great though and we found that the cooked salmon was super flavorful. Actually preferred it more to the sashimi. Chuka Idako was mild, refreshing, and nutty. We weren't that big of a fan of it and probably wouldn't get it again. Overall, Izayaka Fuku was an AMAZING experience and I would give it a 10/10. I'm literally obsessed with Izakaya Fuku's bentos and for good reason. The presentation is always spot on that it inspires me to make my own bento -- we'll see lol. The assortment of food included makes it feel like a healthy meal, especially the shio leaf and salad. My partner and I decided to try the fish bentos this time because it comes with karaage anyway, which is what we really wanted. However, it only comes with two pieces of karaage, whereas the karaage bento comes with at least four pieces! This makes sense because there's also the fish. The salmon bento wasn't as good as the shio saba bento. I don't know if I've ever eaten mackerel before, but it was quite tasty! Just note that the piece of mackerel is smaller than the salmon. Regardless, the two bentos were still very delicious. But I think I'll stick to karaage bento next time. I also got the eel over rice for my mom, and it was a whopping $30ish. Once I saw it, I felt much better about the price tag because it was massive and beautifully presented. If you're not a big eater, it could probably be split into two meals. Tip: if you order on their website and it gives you an estimated time for pickup, it might be done much earlier. I love that when you walk in the door, you'll be automatically greeted by the staff and brought to your table. There are also hooks on the wall next to your table where you can hang your coat and belongings. If you run out of space, the staff will help you hang it somewhere nearby. The staff here are very kind, patient, and friendly. Definitely a plus already! However, the food could be better. We shared the following appetizers: Ika Sansai (squid salad with vegetables), Tako Wasabi, Karaage Chicken, Mentai Mayo Fries, and the Ponzu Tuna Tataki. By choice, I only had a small piece of the squid salad and the wasabi octopus because they weren't that great. Both were too chewy so if that's not your type of texture in food, maybe avoid them. The tuna tataki had excellent presentation but lacks a bit of taste... kind of bland. The karage was pretty good with a good amount of chicken and the lemon squeezed on top of the juicy interior was honestly the first thing I enjoyed here. The best appetizer we ordered though were the mentai mayo fries. That was definitely a favorite for the group! The fries were crispy, hot, and the paired with the mentai mayo was delicious even though I'm not a big fan of mayo (you taste more mentai than mayo here which was a big plus for us). Speaking of mentai, we also ordered the Mentai Udon. Being a huge udon fan and since their mentai mayo from the fries were good, I expected a lot from this and was very very disappointed by it instead. This tasted like straight up mayo with noodles and I couldn't eat more than a bite of this. I guess if you love mayo, order this? But you might as well put udon and mayo on a plate, mix it up and serve. Their presentation for this (and all their dishes) was pretty good though. The highlight was the bacon... when not covered in sauce. I also tried the chili garlic Hokkaido and the zuwaikani pasta (snow crab pasta). Both had a tiny but very welcome kick to it. The chili garlic one was overly sweet for noodles but one of us ranked this his favorite of the 3 noodles! The snow crab pasta was the most neutral of all 3. Came with lots of fish eggs and snow crab! I ordered the black garlic ramen to share because of all the recommendations to try it. I love garlic so I just had to try this. The ramen came with lots of mushrooms, 2 large pieces of char siu, scallions, and half a ramen egg. As this sets upon the table, all you smell is garlic! ... but all you taste is also garlic. There was just too much garlic and after a while, it gets tiring, even for someone who loves garlic. Perhaps it'd be better if the black garlic came on the side and we could adjust it for ourselves. Overall, food was honestly very meh. 3/5. The service/atmosphere 4/5. When the bill comes, it comes in a dvd case which is pretty cute concept. This place is cash only!! Also, I'm not sure if they do this all the time, but gratuity was already included for us. It's typical for restaurants to already have tip included for parties of 6 or more but we were only a group of 5. The staff here honestly should have said something. Usually staff at restaurants say something if they already include gratuity in the bill. Not seeing this, I included tip again... so read your bill carefully, people!!! ... unless you want to give a 50% tip like I did and not realizing until hours later why the staff was so happy after the bill was collected... happy holidays to the staff! read more

This is one of the cutest & chill vibe Japanese Restaurant in Queens. The decor gives off such a traditional Japanese bar like vibe. The service was quick and efficient. They were so kind and provided anything when we needed. The food definitely 100/100. My family has ordered from this place multiple times. The food always never disappoint. Definitely recommend the fried oyster. It's so crispy and doesn't smell fishy at all. The dons are super cute too especially when they are placed in a wooden bento box. Izakaya Fuku is not one of those "izakayas" that serve you tiny portions of overpriced fancy food. You get the true, casual, almost divey feel of an izakaya with big portions of pan fried yakisoba and delicious takoyaki. My partner and I were seated immediately on a Friday afternoon in the back. The space is adorned with fairy lights, random Japanese posters and American rock band paraphernalia. This contributed to a casual, cozy, and chill vibe. They also have hooks to hang your coat/bags which is pretty convenient. My partner and I ordered the Garlic Soy Skirt Steak, Omu Yakisoba, and Takoyaki. The Takoyaki balls are delicious and served at a reasonable temperature that won't burn a hole in your mouth. The Omu Yakisoba was also super delicious and served in a large portion. The Garlic Soy Skirt Steak was a good balance of sweet and salty and was very tender. I have also gotten take out from here before and you can't go wrong with whatever you order. The service is attentive without being obnoxious. Our server always kept our water full, checked in during our meal, and didn't miss a beat by anticipating our every need. We were almost caught off guard because our server handed us a spiderman dvd case after our meal which contained the bill (cool concept!). With how expensive Japanese food can be in Manhattan, it's a relief to be able to find affordable, filling, and delicious Japanese food in Queens. Great find. read more

Creative and funky spot with a welcoming staff for any time eats but especially late night eats and drinks. They offer some sashimi, chirashi bowls and hand roll options but really come for the hot Japanese eats like fried squid tentacles, takoyaki, ramen, cod roe udon dishes, kaki fried oysters and such. Ooh they did serve my fave ankimo (monkfish liver aka foie gras of the sea) and that was super fresh and delicious!!! Loved the variety of onigiri that they served as well as the variety of grilled options like beef tongue, whole squid, mackerel to name a few. It's a tiny spot, so I wouldn't recommend this place for large groups, unless you're doing a buy out of the spot for a block of time (and not sure if they offer that) but it's great for singles, for two even four tops.
