Pretty disappointing overall. Food mediocre. Mac and cheese was pretty good but I expected more Bacon and peas since it was an entrees. Our waiter was helpful. I've been going to Clarke's in New York for over 50 years. A few words for P.J. Clarke fans in Washington - DO NOT GO HERE. Not only is it an insult to a great tradition, it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have endured. OK, I understand that this is not a lively place on a winter Saturday afternoon in quiet downtown DC, But there are no excuses. When our waiter finally appeared, he did so with a total lack of interest. We ordered drinks. Three of us wanted a Bloody, each a little different. For example, I wanted mine not too spicy and with no garnishments except for lemon wedges. And no horseradish, please. After a very, very long interval, drinks were served. They all were loaded with horseradish and had the most absurd garnishes I have ever seen on an eight inch spear submerged in the thick gooey red mess. We mentioned that perhaps there was some confusion, these were not what we ordered. The waiter disappeared (maybe he went to lunch, who knows?). He came back and said "That's the way the bartender makes them.) I then ordered a Rum, rocks and lime. He eventually returned with a tall rum & tonic. Never mind, I needed a drink. When our lunch order was finally taken in the nearly vacant restaurant, I asked for my club sandwich on lightly toasted white instead of the multi-grain. Needless to say it arrived on burnt multi-grain. As the waiter explained when I asked about it, "That's about as white a bread as we have." I've never been so happy to walk out onto the cold, grey and dank streets of Washington. And did I mention the ersatz décor? Don't get me started...... read more

I don't review many places. But this was just ok. Not worth the prices. We got the salmon crudo, was good but too salty and they sprinkled large pieces of salt on it. Had to crunch through it. Wedge salad was good. Deep fried chicken sandwich was not good. The batter was something you'd get on deep fried fish- not chicken. Don't get the chicken sandwich. We ordered "shoe string potatoes" and they were just regular French fries- McDonald's are better and $5 less! My wine was $13 but tasted like a $2-buck Chuck. read more

Worst brunch ever. And it is way overpriced. I had frittata which was bland scrambled eggs overcooked and then topped with fishy tasting crab and spears of asparagus. Eh, so/so. The hostess and bartender were friendly, but the waitress was kind of spacey and rude. She seemed constantly confused and put-off by things that are very normal (e.g., asking questions about the menu, needing a few more minutes before you order, requesting two spoons for one dessert, etc.). I enjoyed the calamari we had as an appetizer (warning = it's SO SPICY! so spicy that it made me cough when I was trying to eat it...yet, I still enjoyed it). My burger was waaay too rare. Like it was bleeding all over my bun and made the bread gooey and soggy and gross. Now, I like juicy burgers, but this was just too much rareness for something that didn't specify it be cooked that way. Sweet potato fries were good, but I agree that it's annoying that the burgers don't come with fries. Anyway, the experience was nothing special and I wouldn't come back unless they were running a really special special. read more

Ordered the burger with fries and it was delicious. Not sure what type of sauce they use but it tastes like a tangy ketchup/bbq sauce. It pairs perfect with the burger. I would definitely go back. Wow! Such a find. Right across the street from our hotel, it couldn't have been more convenient. Really nice outdoor area where you can people watch. Ate here more than once. Super impressed with the burgers, albeit pricey were well worth the dime. Also, the SWEET POTATO FRIES, were crispy and extraordinarily delicious. What do they do to them? Our servers, Breny (sp?) and Marcus were great, tending to our every needs before we knew that we needed something. Had the crab cake sandwich, also delicious. Clam chowder as well. I was here for brunch Sunday with a group of my friends. We had an amazing time. We were greeted by Sean, who was very pleasant. Kareem, our server was extremely friendly and attentive. They both made sure we had a good time and were satisfied the entire time. The brunch menu had a few things I wanted to try, but I finally decided on the Country Breakfast. I must say that PJ's has some of the yummiest chicken sausage I've ever tasted. The silver dollar pancakes were a great touch and the scrambled eggs were cooked well. The only reason I didn't give five stars is the the cheese grits. They weren't as hot as I would have liked and I didn't taste any cheese in them and they were a bit thick and stuck together as well :( But thats an easy fix. The best part of brunch were the Bellinis and Kir Royals. They were flowing and not weak at all. I will definitely be back. Cant wait for the weather to warm up so we can sit outside and enjoy brunch and bellinis. read more

An average meal at above average prices. I had the flank steak over chopped salad and while the steak was tasty the salad was overwhelmed by olives. The service was good and the waitress was nice enough to explain why my whiskey charge was above the price on the menu - the bar tender said it was because I ordered it over ice. We had reservations at 7:45 and we were seated promptly. We got our drinks and ordered within 15-20 minutes. Our appetizer arrived promptly, but our main dishes came out AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER. For a chicken pot pie, two burgers and a salad with chicken on it. This was ridiculous and the server did not attempt to bring bread or anything to tide us over...plus...she made no attempt to make it up to us with a free dessert or anything. The service was horrendous. This was the worst service I've had in a very long time. We waited a while for our reserved table, not a huge deal. Took a while for our waitress to come over, again we were fine with it. It's Thursday at 7:30 and the place is pretty new so it's understandable. First, we got our deviled eggs and the calamari. The waitress apologized for the oysters not coming out first, but said there was only one shucker. We said we didn't mind. The tots did not come with the other appetizers. Then we get our burgers after a bit, but no fries or onion strings. We have to flag down our waitress to ask about the fries and onion strings since a runner brought our food out. We also mention that we didn't get the tots. She says we didn't order tots. We say we did. She says maybe she didn't hear (not a big deal at this point). The waitress says she'll go check on our fries and strings. We see her go to the point of sale machine. She's clearly putting in our order for fries and strings. We either have to eat our burgers w/ no sides or wait while they get cold. About 10 or 15 min later our fries and strings come out along w/ the tater tots (which we didn't ask her to go ahead with). One person is done w/ the burger. The rest of us have waited. The waitress didn't apologize at any point about what was going on, let alone offer anything as compensation. While we are still eating, the waitress asks us if we want dessert. The bussers take our plates away while we are picking at fries (without asking if we'd like it removed). At this point, we're not too pleased with the service. We ask for the check and notice that the waitress has charged us for the tater tots (again, she didn't ask us if we'd still like them). This place has good food and it's very reasonably priced. Hopefully they get the service issues resolved. read more

Came here with a group of girlfriends for a birthday dinner...won't be back. I had heard the burgers were good so I thought I would try one. Doesn't come with anything but a slice of a pickle and for $13 was highly overpriced. Our waitress was pleasant but after taking one bite of my meal I discovered it was so greasy that it had literally soaked through the bun on both sides to the extent that you could not even peel the bun away from the meat. It was disgusting. I sent it back and refused to order nothing else...I had lost my appetite and since my 10 friends already had their meals I didn't want to hold anyone up as we had plans afterwards. The manager came over and apologized but offered no solution. When the bill came, the burger was still on it, and the manager who clearly has limited customer service skills refused to take it off. I never complain at restaurants but when something is inedible as was evidenced by the fact I had only taken one bite I feel like it is the restaurants responsibility to either make it right or take it off the bill. They recently catered a dinner for 16 people in our office with just 2 hours notice, quite a feat. We highly recommend them. read more

The food and ambiance are excellent. The service unfortunately is poor. I requested a hamburger medium rare and it arrived well done. Drinks were not refilled. My dinner partner asked for a few Splendas for his iced tea and he received a few lemon wedges. Our waiter was sitting (yes, sitting) at a table with a single lady shooting the breeze while we waited for his attention. The four stars are a reflection of the quality of the meal. The burger, while overcooked, was still exceptional. The french fries were superb and the bourbon bread pudding is worth the price of admission. read more

Saw the place while out walking this afternoon. Looked good enough to come back for an early dinner. Nice old dark wood feel, brief menu but was surprised with a restaurant week 3 course special. I went pretty traditional with wedge salad , crisp lettuce and a tart buttermilk blue cheese dressing, the ribeye was cooked per order and the whiskey bread pudding was a great finish. Took my wife here for Mother's Day and I must say what I expected was not what we got. The waiter was a guy who didn't even introduce himself . He didn't even sound excited to wait on us , he just pointed at items on the menu and just left it at that . The ambiance was ok , the food was ok . The waiter didn't even give suggestion. There was a gentleman at the front who actually was friendly enough to suggest a beer and to waitress from another table actually was the one that checked on us . The food here is really delicious, especially the Chicken Pot Pie, Yummy, it was the best Chicken Pot Pie that we have ever eaten, definitely great comfort food. Manager Angel Flores was fantastic! My husband and I were staying at a hotel across the street and we did not have reservations on very busy Saturday night. Angel was helpful and accommodating, he sat us down right away. Angel was friendly, professional and caring. Our server Mallory was great! She served us immediately and our delicious tater tots appetizer came only ten minutes after we ordered it. Mallory has a great smile and makes you feel as if you are important. She also was very attentive and courteous. Angel also came to our table to talk to us. His name is perfect, he is an angel. Angel looks after his customers, it is as if you are entering his home and he wants to make sure that you are totally taken care of to his best ability. This is obviously his true calling, giving the best customer service anyone can give. The reason this restaurant is so popular is because not only is the food delicious, well prepared and fresh, but the staff truly cares and makes you feel welcome and important. My overall experience would be I rather not comeback here again. First the waiter came with such nice hospitality but it seemed hard to understand him but he got the order for me and my family right. So that's a plus, right? First my "pigs in a blanket" , I was the only one to order a starter, they were ok a bit salty for my taste but overall good. Then next the main dishes came and Oh my God how? I've never been so disgusted my chicken was burnt on the top and half raw on the inside, I'm mind bigleded how this was possible and the "salad" that was just letting with nothing on the side with cheese was probolby the only thing that kept me going through. My mother's fish was ok cooked no bones well done. Then my father's plate was cold from the start then they brought it back. And you could tell it was thrown in a microwave. Then ok my father asked for bread , they came back 10 minutes later but the bread you could tell it was dough put in an oven for 5 minutes then taken out , they way it looked and tasted, and the butter was so cold and hard I had to hold the platter it was in in order to cut it. Well once we finished all our main plates we got desert, worst mistake of my day, my brownie was good the hersy syrup was drenching the platter and the ice cream was mushy and tasted as if it was taken out 10 minute s ago. My mother's cheesecake was ok nothing bad to say my father got an apple pie like dish and was scolding to the touch and the top was crunchy and half burnt. However I would not recommend this place for sub attaquet, satisfactory food and service and the bill was $170 with tax and that's rounded up from $169.42. So sad! I really wanted to like this place, especially since I've spent some fun times at the original in NYC. The atmosphere is good, really great old photos, and Disney's glass greenhouse thing really unique, but the waiter was so obnoxious we wanted to punch him, and the food was incredibly average. I would never eat here again. The burger was a pathetic little patty, no kidding, like fast food. We were six, and not one of us had positive comments about our dinners. The only bright side was the bartender. After dinner I went to the bar and the service was absolutely outstanding. I wish I could remember the bartender's name who took care of me - he was the reason people go to bars. I would absolutely drink there and if I got hungry, order with the understanding that it would be bar food purposed for alcohol soaking. read more

This was a horrible lunch experience in every way. I arrived to find the hostess in an arguement with the waiter. I was then seated & the waiter came to fill the water, but was distracted/had too much coffee/hyperactive and overpoured the water onto the table. (This was an omen of what was to come) I then cleaned up the water with my napkin and eventually he realized what happened, apologized and replaced my napkin, but not the sopping wet table cloth. Oh well. My friend arrived and we ordered - our food came promptly but then i felt something driping on my head and onto my purse next to me on the seat/bench. The cieling was dripping and who knows if it landed in my food. We were moved to another table. My chicken ceaser salad for $17.50 could have used a chain saw or steak knife to cut - it was over cooked and dry. For that price folks, get it right. I came last night with 15 friends for my birthday, never having visited this place before. LOVED IT! The service was excellent. We were assigned 2 servers who were amicable and personable without being intrusive as well as timely and attentive without being pushy or making us feel rushed. The Manager was also excellent and gave me a little birthday gift :-) The food was tasty and just what I needed before a night out. Perfect menu for a large group because anyone can find something they'll enjoy. I will definitely be returning (hopefully for Brunch which I've heard great things about). read more
