La Fonda - Sancocho, beans, rice plate with avocado and Colombian coleslaw.

We arrived at 6:30pm. I'd have given this five stars had there been more entree options available on the menu. But out of eight main dishes, five were unavailable. However, what we did end up having was delicious. Starter: Beef empanadas, two small but delicious empanadas with lots of flavor, served with a spicy salsa. Mains: Bandeja paisa - if you love pork belly, this is a deep fried strip of pork belly, served with rice that has a fried egg on top, half a plantain, a tostone, shredded beef, half an avocado, and what I'll assume is a Colombian coleslaw (on the vinegary side). The soup, Sancocho, was a delicious concoction of beef and pork ribs, with potatoes, plantains and yucca. Comes with rice, half the avo, and the same coleslaw. Service was straightforward and friendly. Their English was limited, as was our French and Spanish, but the order sheet and picture menu were helpful. Give it a go. Family run, unpretentious, no loud dance music playing, and there didn't seem to be a ton of tourists. Our meal as noted above with three waters ran us €47. CASH ONLY.

Not really sure how to explain this one - the previous restaurant here (almost identical menu and…read morename)...El Verghel...was an institution and absolutely great for lunch (sitting or take away). Sure it wasn't cheap, but the mix of staff and great food kept us coming back for more. Fast-forward to the present - apparently there are new owners and a (slight) name change. Suddenly the quality of the food takes an absolute nose-dive, despite appearing to be unchanged on paper. Example - the amazing slices of beef on the famous 'palta' sandwiches have now been cut back to taste more like spam on bread. Sure, it's the same kind of ingredients, but clearly someone decided to increase the money they could take in from subtely cutting costs. Do I sound jaded? Well, my suspicious have been confirmed by a large number of colleagues who made this place a regular lunch spot over the last few years. So I guess that's just that. Perhaps if you had never been before it would still appear as a good option for lunch. But I really don't see myself coming back here any more unless I am stuck. Of course there are still some good options in here compared to the numerous delis in the area if you are searching for hot food and a nice place to sit down, but it's just the drop in quality that really stands out as both unnecessary and a downright pity.

It's a cheery space with friendly service, eager to please. The Spanish tortilla was a bit dry, and needed garlic. The chicken tacos, well, they had chicken in them, and the corn tortillas were genuine corn tortillas. There wasn't any Mexican spice to anything I ate, until I asked for some hot sauce to lend some flavor, any flavor to what I was eating. When the hot sauce arrived, it was a halleluja moment that earned this place a third star. I received a ramekin filled with ... habanero salsa! I thought peppers this strong were illegal in the European Union. I was ecstatic. Upon finishing my plate of tacos, I asked the waiter if I could bring home a portion of habanero salsa and some raw peppers too. He happily obliged, and now I'm setting my mouth on fire in Brussels.
