Now in my forties, I need to remain active. I went to a Yelp event and by default, I won free foundations classes and a one month membership. I had never done crossfit. Enter a little energized sparkplug by the name of Alex, and you have Mt Tabor CrossFit's reason for being. She is encouraging, positive and great at correcting your form. I have always been used to isolated workouts, so getting used to circuit training is a bit different but, so far I've adapted well. Alex is a little fire-cracker of a coach and she's wonderful at explaining the movements, I love the support I get from Alex plus cheers from fellow classmate! The workouts can seem intimidating but it is modified to your fitness level ... If you are looking for a challenge and see what your limits are, this may be the place worth checking out, it is a very competitive environment but you are mostly competing against yourself.

This is the only gym where I've been consistent and stayed consistent and in the four months I've been a member I've seen noticeable improvements in my musculature, core strength and stamina. I go for the classes. If you pay for the monthly membership all classes are included. I try to hit three a week. I hope to attend more open gym times in the future but for right now the evening classes work with my schedule. There's a couple things I could nitpick. I wish they were open all day on Saturday and Sunday. It makes more sense to be open half days on a weekday for those of us who work 9-5s. I think the powerlifting class should be limited to no more than 6 - 8 people given the equipment limitations. But overall I'm not here to be at the most resourced or state of the art gym. Place is important and I need to workout publicly in a space that's affirming and that's what I've found here. The trainers are great. Eloise is fantastic. She takes you seriously and provides good critique on form while also challenging you to improve. She has great bedside manner and I'm always happy to take her classes even if they kick my ass sometimes. Felicia is also fantastic and plays great music and I appreciate Kristen's chill energy during powerlifting. I love the get ups and hinges class most, followed by kettlebell 7. The conditioning class is sadistic and occasionally I'll go to test my progress. Last time one of the exercises included doing 1000 jump ropes. I was like oh so you hate us hate us but I also felt accomplished by rising to the challenge. I moved to Portland about 9 months ago and didn't think it would be as hard as it has been to find community but EKC has been a welcoming part of my weekly routine that has made me feel connected to my community. It's two blocks from my house and for the first time in my life actually enjoy working out. It's not a cheap gym by any means but it's not budget breaking. They have a flexible pricing scheme for income limited folks. They're always making little improvements here and there including adding more signage and painting and I appreciate their desire to revise and improve on themselves as I am too. Love this place. Can't say enough good things. Almost don't want more people to come because I like the class sizes as they are but I also want to support this place that's made me feel very welcomed.

The trainers are knowledgeable, attentive, and generous with their time and instruction. Eloise has already offered me several corrections / adjustments that have improved my experience. (Felecia and Tess, too!) While rigorous, each class and program accommodates multiple levels of experience and fitness. Above all, I have been impressed by the welcoming and supportive atmosphere/culture, deepened and sustained by EKC's members. Here, one can truly come as they are. I feel motivated and inspired and look forward to my next workout at/with EKC.

Coach Jabo helped me snatch 141kg and clean and jerk 160kg!…read more This location features an absolutely beautiful facility, with plenty of equipment, separate areas for each training modality, and a friendly and warm atmosphere. Athletes were happy to chat and introduced themselves and everyone was so strong! There were people powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, and a couple of strongman athletes. The neighborhood and streets nearby had plenty of parking spots, and I grabbed a spot right in front of the gym entrance. Head Coach Jabo was very attentive with his athletes, and was giving cues and advice about programming, adjusting the reps, sets, and weights when necessary, and providing moral support and encouragement. He gave me several cues that completely changed the feeling of each of the lifts for me, and communicated these cues in a way that helped me understand but not overthink. A couple of my top sets of the clean and jerk felt more smooth than ever thanks to his coaching. You can tell this gym has a close knit community of athletes and coaches who trust each other and perform exceptionally. Highly recommend for anyone, and especially Olympic weightlifters!

($40) We expected to pay, I suppose, but we've visited other boxes where we didn't have to pay for the first visit. Instead of paying to workout for the first time at a box, we buy shirts instead. We collect CF shirts whenever we travel. Let's just say, we ended up paying another $40 for shirts. Basically, $80 for a workout/shirt was definitely not worth it. We also had a workout that consisted of med balls. Ok. It's our fault we don't do much with med balls at our own box; however, we couldn't really grasp the idea of running 400m doing a basketball toss of some sort with the med ball, and there wasn't a certain technique to do it effectively. It was a strange move. HOWEVER, the coach, Maddoc (sp?) was super friendly. We also met a member, Rika (sp?) who welcomed us. The box itself was an organized chaos and it had some cool concepts like a wall dedicated to members who have been there for more than two years and a kids' room for the little ones. As…read moreyou can see from some of the photos I've posted, it's moved locations from the Industrial District (how it's name originated) to St. John's. I've taken classes with Tony, Mira, Casey, Adam, and Cory. All of whom have been phenomenal. They also offer virtual kettlebell classes at noon, and a wide array of online courses like mobility, fundamental bjj and so fourth. Class sign up is through Mindbody with a few different beginner friendly options depending if you're interested in martial arts, strength training, or kettlebells. There are also on site physical therapists who are able to assist you in your fitness journey. All the coaches are incredibly skilled with different strengths, I really appreciate the emphasis on technique to improve my strength and form through out my time there. Even on days I couldn't be physically there and was able to still be adjusted via zoom. I also really appreciate their pause program. My schedule can be quite chaotic at times so you're able to freeze your membership for a month for $25 and have the opportunity to take two classes during that time. (I noticed another review mentioning this, but left out that detail) Which is quite generous still since it's less than their drop in fee. In comparison to other gyms I still love what a mix of body types and gender there is when training Jiu jitsu, you don't realize how rare it is till you've gone to multiple gyms. At the moment gi is done the 1st-19th and the 20th to the end of the month is no gi. I particularly got invested in Jiu jitsu during the pandemic and there has been some great focus on self defense which I really appreciate during the current state of the world. I'm terms of the set up of the gym (which is throughly discussed on the website). You're able to come trial martial arts for a reduced cost as listed on the website. If you'd like to try out the strength and condition classes, weightlifting, or kettlebells; there is an on ramp program that you can do for 30 days in the evening. It's a program where they teach you all the techniques that will be used in class & you test your weights assess which weights will be best for you during class. Therefore during classes it's more about honing in technique and applying skill onto knowledge you've already built. I appreciate this concept as it really speeds up productivity and the community is so helpful to assist you and cheer you on when you're still learning. Cannot put more emphasis on how incredibly amazing this community has been to grow with. Still such a gem, with people who propel you further in life. It's amazing to work out with such highly motivated individuals and continue to grow.
