It was a dark and stormy-day. The wind was howling, and the forecast warned of impending snow. I braved the winter weather, with my designated driver, to the Apple Valley frontier. When we arrived, the parking lot was vast with plenty of parking, and the warm waiting room was a welcome reprieve from the cold. I checked-in around 8 am and waited in the lobby, which had space for about 30 seats and a nearby bathroom. My appointment was for 8:45 am, and my name was called shortly around that time. Rebecca was kind, friendly, and professional. She assisted me with the eye test that displayed a farmhouse in the distance, the Snellen chart, and asked if I was comfortable having my eyes dilated. After she applied the drops, she led me to a second waiting area, where I only waited a few minutes before Paige called me to another room. Paige gently checked the progress of my dilation and added a yellow dye to help the doctor see any abnormalities in my eye. When Dr. Ryan Smith arrived, he was kind and friendly. He used hand sanitizer before he greeted me, which I thought was a pro move. I'm not a germophobe, but I know doctors see multiple patients in a day, and I appreciated his diligence. Dr. Smith examined my eyes and answered my questions. I don't always feel heard when it comes to my health, but with Dr. Smith, I felt he valued my health and listened intently to my feedback, not simply relying on his vast education and experience but viewing me as a partner in my health. His warm demeanor showed a doctor who truly enjoyed caring for the eye health of his patients. I recommend Dr. Ryan Smith to anyone needing gentle, attentive eye care. The quality of care at Pacific Eye Institute is excellent. The Drs are very knowledgeable, concerned and ready with patient answers. The only concern that I have is the unprofessional conduct which the front reception desk has displayed to me. Mind you, the receptionists are friendly and helpful, but it is the ongoing talking, laughing, and discussing issues rather than clinic job duties that really annoy me. I was told they did cataract surgery in Apple Valley-No-Upland this was after My 3rd appointment. 4th appointment I was told I would be given 48 hours notice for My surgery date, yet not time was given=Strike 3. There is no reason why this should have taken 4 exams to accomplish this procedure. Price for an IOL was ONE THOU$AND more than their Neighboring Ophthalmologists for which the IOL procedure was accomplished (with great success) with 2 exams, and I was given a surgery date one the first visit. The experience I had was horrible. The lady damaged my eyes with carelessness, I'm looking to sue. I will be filing a complaint asap.

This is a very busy place, but the staff is organized and accommodating. I waited an hour past my appt time, and I had to leave to pick up my grandchild. They were able to work around that and I came back a few hours later to be seen. I saw an opthamologist, and he seemed to be in a big hurry. He did a brief exam, not the usual thorough exam I was expecting and had always experienced at my previous ophthalmologist (in Oregon). I may have had higher expectations than I should have, but I did feel rushed and somewhat unimportant. Very friendly support staff, they all seemed extremely knowledgeable and capable. Staff was great, doctor's bedside manner was a bit lacking. I'm sure he's a good doctor and that I must have received the care he deemed necessary. read more

Communication skills need help with the scheduling people for surgery. I got checked out by this place and he said I need surgery but I told them my insurance is changing as of July 1st. I waited about a week nobody called me to schedule my surgery. I called 5 days in a row to try and make appointment. Nobody took the time to let me know I wasn't covered under my new insurance carrier. Why not take 2 minutes to call people to let them know we are not covered instead of me making call after call to set up eye surgery. No common sense to drag people along thinking they are going to get surgery. I had to find out from another facility that I wasn't covered under Pacific Eye Institute and my insurance carrier. read more

This place gives you the run around with not being covered by insurance. My insurance approved my surgery for Apple Valley but they rejected that approval and put in a new approval for upland. This is after they failed to get the surgery approved and canceled my surgery the day before I was to have the surgery. I have had to do the work of getting the approvals. They also do not return calls. read more

Slowest Dr office in the high desert. Sign in, wait 45 minutes. Get back to the room, wait 45 minutes. Go back to another room to wait another 45 minutes. See the Dr 3 seconds. Ridiculous. read more

Very disorganized. Made an eye appointment for my mom for glaucoma almost a month ago. Got there and were informed they don't do that testing on the day we brought her. Really!? They were the ones who made the appointment. They even sent us paperwork with the date on the front page. Ended up calling her insurance company and found a doctor who is much more accommodating. At the price of gas these types of mistakes are costly. No confidence in this company at all. read more

I am a patient of Pacific Eye Institute. I was diagnosed with WMD, and have been receiving treatments for a few years now by Doctor Rahhal. Recent appointments have been very encouraging. I was later referred to Doctor Bekendam for Cataracts Surgery which helped. After time and a few more treatments, my vision in the WMD eye is now 20/30, and I have gone 9 months without the need of another injection. The WMD has been completely dry without problems. I am so very Grateful To Doctor Rahhal and his Amazing Staff for the years of Treatment and Care that has greatly improved my eye condition. read more

Best care I've gotten for derm issues. So glad I ended up here for precancerous screenings and follow up. Having cancer removed previously I need someone who cared and was observant.
