So this is the second time I've visited Pacific Eye Instatute and each time I've had a somewhat of a good visit. Unfortunately this time I had to get a Diabetic eye exam which I've never even heard of or knew that exam even existed! Fortunately the wait wasn't long and all of the staff at Pacific Eye Instatute were all very nice and professional. I wished the doctor had explained to me a little bit better about what was going on with my eyes because I feel like there is more going on than meets the eye! Lol .. No pun intended! I understand that I have been diagnosed with dry eyes but that doesn't explain the massive floaters that I have now. I mean ever since being diagnosed with Diabetes I have had these floaters just get worse! I'm really concerned as it's blocking my view at times. I was told to pick up some eye drops for dry eyes then he said that he would like to do more test! I'm thankful that he is looking more into what's going on because this is a very uncomfortable & painful experience and it's scary too! He also talked about doing some implants to create more natural tears. I'm going to try the eye drops first and hope that , that will help and then maybe I won't have any more issues. Fingers crossed! If you're ever in the Temecula area and are looking for a place to do a Diabetic eye exam, this would be the place to go! The Pacific Eye Institute doctors especially Dr. Roeske, are pleasant and courteous. However, a LOT has to be said about the telephone and email communications as to determine at what time is the scheduled surgery procedures. There are various telephone numbers to call- yet ALL of them route to a centralized AI-directed call center; putting one on hold for over 15 minuted (while voice states from 10 down to 2). To add insult to injury, after holdind for 20 minutes (not 10 as stated), the AI states that "no one is available - leave a voice mail". It's obvious that none of the staff cares about picking up the phone or even searching the emails as to messages, and then get back to the patients! It's just wait, wait, wait; only to be disconnected! Again, the doctors are only as good as their staff, and the staff is in DIRE need to personally attend to their phones and emails! read more

I hate to leave a two-star review. Because Dr Smith is a five-star doctor. But I have had so much trouble getting someone to call me back and get answers to our questions regarding a surgery, it's driving me crazy. I've been referred to their other offices and nobody calls me back and then when I call back the Temecula office I can't get a hold of anybody. It's just so frustrating. If you like to be frustrated use this office. If you don't mind a lot of red tape and waiting, then this is your place. Again Dr Smith is amazing as are the other doctors. I would give Dr Smith a million stars. It's the front office and the scheduling that I'm having trouble with. We also had trouble scheduling a prior surgery with them where they canceled it several times. I just wish they would get it together so I could give them the review the doctors deserve. I'm so close to going to another office but I'm going to stick with them only because the quality of care is good. But the frustration level is off the charts, and we still can't get answers to our surgery questions. read more

First off the waiting room is tiny and usually cramped to the point you cant get a seat. If that was the only issue I wouldn't be writing this. I was referred to Pacific from Inland due to needing a Glaucoma specialist. Was told they accepted my insurance which both entities of my ins. are listed as accepted on their list. A month to get my first visit which is fine but after prescribing another eye drop and told surgery was not an option they made another app. for a full work up in three months which was in the first week of Oct. 2025. IMO i should have had a sooner follow up to check on my eye pressure situation but three months later...... After a full work up im told my pressure is not being maintained by the drops and now Dr. Yung is recommending surgery. Unfortunately he tells me now that my ins. does not cover that and "There is nothing more he can help me with". This leaves me forced to contact my primary care DR. and ask for another referral for a Glaucoma specialist. So I lost four months of time because they couldn't tell me at the get go my ins. did not cover any procedures. Another note: I and my insurance co. left messages multiple messages with the scheduling agent, Karen, to see if they could get it covered after getting the paperwork submitter and NEVER got a call back. This is the worst treatment i've ever encountered in my 59 years. read more

She explained the procedure prior to the actual date of surgery and entertained all of my questions. The date of the surgery went well. Honestly this goes solely for how I was treated on the phone. Their staff needs some training, especially for first time clients. I called in because I have an internal stye that's all I can say because that's all I know I'm not a Dr, but I've had a rash, swelling, etc so I was worried it progressed to cellulitis. So the intake person said I should have an emergency appt and will transfer to triage, well I leave a message their recording says 1 hour to return emergency and 4 hrs to return non well I didn't get a call back till almost the 6 hr mark which was a bad taste to begin with as I called early in the am so they couldn't have been that busy. When I got the call back the woman was so rude and it was such a turn off that I canceled my appt and will take my business elsewhere. I explained how my symptoms progressed and it's been over a month of dealing with this and she said well it's a stye so it's not an emergency so I can't help you.. like I'm sorry I am not going to claim it's for sure cellulitis as I don't know if it is but I'm telling you I'm worried about it because of the rash, swelling, headaches, nausea, etc and she said well it's not an emergency. Alright cool, glad you can dictate what's an emergency and not over the phone without seeing it yet you don't offer virtual appt so I mean thanks for dismissing my concerns. Our experiences with the professional staff, as well as with the majority of technical and support staff, have been excellent over many years. Recently, we have experienced unusually extended wait times which, over time , has not been the case so one wonders about a change in historically effective staffing patterns and/or over scheduling. We greatly appreciate Dr. William Smith's superb clinical skills, his consistency in explaining everything so clearly and that he is just such a warm and pleasant person. In addition, we have recently been introduced to Dr. Sheils and her excellent communication, patient interaction and surgical skills. Dr. YUNG and his staff are rude and disrespectful of their patient's time. Not only was I simply ignored and only greeted by one of the staff members in an office of five when I checked in, they were routinely 20-30 min late with clients in the exam room while the doctor made small talk with his staff in the outside hallway. This is my second visit, and I felt disregarded and disrespected BOTH times I visited his office. I will be relocating soon and am so glad to be getting another specialist. First they did a very thriving business, in the Hesperia office, and then they upped, and closed it, so the people on the west side of Hesperia/ Victorville, like myself, and family, have to drive an additional 20+ miles, or more, depending on what you are having done......I had eyelid surgery scheduled April, they canceled to July, then again for August 21 I DIDN'T GET MY SURGERY THAT DAY EITHER!!!!!! and was told by the pompous doctor that it did not make any difference, BECAUSE I did not have a referral, which I did, from checking with my doctor, as well as when I had an appoint reminder from Pacific Eye, and I ask the caller if we had a go, that everything was lined up. I met with Dr. Yung on April 2nd 2024 and received an eye pressure check which I assumed was ok . He muttered a few words to his assistant (he is very hard to understand) He did say my eyes were dry and he wanted to prescribe a prescription for dry eyes. He did and unfortunately it had to come from a pharmacy back east!!! I am so grateful for Doctor William Smith ! I had an appointment with him this morning for the first time because of a bump under my upper eyelid and I was so nervous because I never had anything like this before. He took the time to explain exactly why this is happening and gave me a prescription and also gave me the options for other types of treatments available. He made me feel good about the things he said and I am glad I went to see him. All of the staff was amazing starting from the receptionist Mayra and the doctor assistant who checked my vision and asked me the initial questions (cant remember her name). Very good quality of medical treatment BUT... the one-star rating is for the sad lack of transparency/clarity regarding the actual expenses I was to incur. No one explained that the Pacific Eye Institute's fee would be only one part of the full cost of cataract surgery and that I would also be billed separately by the Surgery Center (which turns out to be an entity independent from the Pacific Eye Institute), and by the anesthesiologist (again, separate billing). The only quote I received--a verbal one at that--was $2,565 per eye for cataract extraction and insertion of an intraocular lens; no written quote was provided to me. Instead of being $5,130 for both eyes, my total has been closer to $8,000 out of pocket. I would have chosen a different procedure if I had been properly informed of the actual costs. I've since heard that other patients have had a similar experience, happy with the quality of care but disappointed by the lack of proper communication. read more

They called the day before the appointment to confirm and when I asked if they were usually on time with their appointments, I was told to expect to be there for at least two hours. I called to make an appointment for my husband for a consult. The receptionist scheduled him with a provider for 08/23/2023 @ 3:00 pm, took all of his information ie: DOB, address, insurance info etc, but when I requested Dr. Smith due to insurance purposes, it was rescheduled for 08/31/2023 @ 2:30 pm which was ok, however when I told the receptionist thank you, she hung up the phone as if she was pissed off and didn't say anything. I called back 10 minutes later to cancel the appointment and was told by Ashley that my husband does not have an appointment scheduled. How can this be when I have the appointment date and time? I work in the Medical field and if this is how we treated our patients, our office would be empty and we all would be without a job. My appointment today was at 3:30- it's now 5:20 and I STILL haven't seen Dr. Smith yet (I'm pretty sure they forgot I was here, they just asked if I was still waiting to be seen today ) Another time they has mistakenly said there was a problem with my insurance (which hadn't changed and I'd been seeing him for a year already) and they tried to cancel my appointment when I got there. I had an excellent pre exam and follow on appt same afternoon with the opthamologist. He quickly suggested two ways to treat the high pressure in my eyes and I agreed to schedule an appointment which I found out would occur first eye in Colton and second eye in Rancho Cucamonga. I had to wait for a call which came on a Friday a week later to confirm the first appt who scheduled that for a following Monday for 2:30. The scheduler called my wife not myself. I howervrr received a time that was different than the time was told to my wife. i placed three calls on the scheduled day... two well before both times for the procedure. I waited for up to 10 minutes to advise the office I needed to cancel. I later called late afternoon and was placed automatically on hold for another 10 minutes. I'm going to find another ophthalmologist. Dr and his assistants were outstanding but their scheduling protocol is terrible for a working patient. read more

Seen by Dr. W. Berwyn Smith. He is not only very thorough & knowledgeable - He knows complex situations. I'm grateful to have him explain why I'm experiencing double vision. Due to my circumstance immediately recognized there is serious concern ran appropriate tests and of course requested necessary scans but in my scenario PPO plan rejects his request thinking service is unnecessary even though there are red flags due to my overall good health and age etc. Long story short end up having to go thru ER where they order scans and identify a mass pushing up against my ocular nerve - sixth nerve palsy in the cavernous sinus - all the while in line with what Dr. Smith was concerned of and suspected. He takes the time to explain - his little drawings help too and combined genuine interest in his patients assures me if I need to go back I'm in good hands. Current Status: Due to sensitive area and high risk of biopsy we are assuming it's benign for now and I'm trying to determine whether micro doses of radiation or proton therapy (also mentioned by Dr. Smith) may be a good fit for treatment. I'm still learning about the condition I have. read more

I had cataract surgery in nov 2018, the surgery and follow up was very good. Now 6 months after my last visit A stitch they put in my eye has broken irritating the eyeball. After explaining my situation they said they could do nothing without new authorization from the VA(about 2 weeks) or I pay to have the stitch removed. Not once did the staff or dr apologize for the wait...until I told the dr I waited 1hour 40 mins..he then apologized after telling me he busy he was. Why over schedule your patients?? Dr. Smith is fantastic. I won't ever go anywhere else again. He diagnosed my husband with a rare auto-immune disorder that was presenting as eyeritis after several doctors had missed it, and then when my daughter accidentally poked me in the eye and tore off the bottom half of my cornea he met me at his office 2 hours before they opened, then again over the weekend, and all the while making sure i had his cel phone number in-case i had any problems or questions. I am about to have my second cataract surgery with Dr. Berwin Smith who I think is just wonderful and I hope when he retires that I will never need another eye doctor he is extremely kind, thorough, and educational you can't ask for better . The biggest problem is that if you are going to see Dr. Smith get comfortable because you're gonna be there for a while . I really can't explain why after all these years that they overbooked to the point where you're there for an hour or more and I'm really taking it easy it's more than an hour . I arrived there today a little before 11 o'clock for my 11 o'clock preop for the second surgery. I sat there until 1130 and nobody told me that they were doing the pre-ops in another office down the hall . I was shocked because that exact same thing happened on my last surgery which was about six or seven years ago. If I had kept that appointment today by the time I got to the other office I was told that there were three people ahead of me and that the pre-op took about an hour, two of the patients sitting there came into his office after me. . So I am to be put at the bottom of the list because I didn't know that they were taking patients to another office how could this happen twice in a row? By my estimation I would have been lucky to be home today by 2 o'clock for an 11 o'clock appointment now if that makes sense to anybody that's reading this I guarantee you make an appointment show up. The only reason that I'm going back on Friday again is because I really do want Dr. Smith to do my second surgery as well. I will have a couple of appointments with him after the surgery and then I probably will never ever go back there again!!!!!! read more
