Do not go to this place. I bought one frozen steak and 2 burgers. When I got them home I saw the expiration on the steak was June and the expiration on the burger was July 1 (this was July 24.) When I called they said to come back and get new ones. When I went to the place which was 35 min from where I was staying, they refused to at least give me a discount since I had to drive all the way back. Also when I wass loking for a new burger, there was at least 15 expired burgers in the bin. They also said they freeze there steaks once they are near expiration. Sorry I don't trust that. read more

The title of this piece today is: YOU DID NOT HAVE TO KILL IT TWICE. I had not purchased products from Barrett's for years now because of poor brisket cook for years. Today, hungry for brisket, I thought to venture a purchase at Barrett's for lunch. Smoked meats and sides! Great! Yes, yes, Barrett's has great smoked turkey and awards plenty for that product. I purchased some for my honey as we miss authentic West Texas BBQ. Well and good. You all get 4 stars for your turkey. As to brisket, ah, that is where the less than greatness lies. I had gotten my purchase to go. When I arrived home and broke open the brisket package: Sad, sad, brisket. DOA. Lifeless. Got the whole smoked turkey one year and the whole smoked turkey breast for Thanksgiving another year. Excellent! Also got a small smoked ham for Easter. Very good. Excellent jerky, smoked cheese, snacks, great steaks from the fresh meat counter, potato salad, etc all good. My company has gotten us lunch from here a couple times. Brisket mac, Cuban sandwich, and things my coworkers got were all very good. Friendly helpful staff. Good place for gifts for the food lover, as well. read more

Ordered a smoked turkey breast for Thanksgiving. Very organized at pick up. Turkey and mac and cheese were delicious!

We went in to get steaks to grill. The staff was so helpful. We got a couple of ribeye steaks. We seasoned them lightly and grilled them according to recommendations. They were the best steaks. Melted in our mouths. I would highly recommend this place for steaks, burgers, jerky and their macaroni and cheese is amazing. They even have a vending machine outside so you can make purchases when they aren't open. read more

I'm only giving one star for the horrible attitude of the old hag that waited on us at the counter at noon on Wednesday 5-11-2022. The food is delicious. Sandwiches are superb. But the hag greeted us with a grunt and was rude and unfriendly. This wasn't the first time she waited on us and she was every bit as awful the prior time. Maybe she's related to the owners so they don't fire her. I know in these Covid times good help is hard to find but they'd be better off with nobody working the counter than that mean old hag. read more

I went here on a Sunday when they opened. Very nice place. VERRRY CLEAN! Loved the set up.They had a variety of things that they sold. It's more set up like a deli with other things that you can buy off of the shelves. They have different types of lunch meats that you can buy, nuts, chocolates,smoked fish, etc and you can also order cooked food. I ordered the brisket sandwich that was recommended to me by my brother who loved it. All I can say is , absolutely delicious. The meat was plentiful, good flavor, and the meat was tender. Just a very good place and the prices were really good. The sandwich was only about $9. I also bought a toffee cookie and that was good too, a little too sweet for me but still good..I will be coming back!! read more

Barrett's Smokehouse creates the most sublime cheese! Yes, they also cure their own meats, which are very good, but I am a true fan of their cheese. I've tried several of them and enjoyed them all. My favorite is probably their White Cheddar Horseradish. Remember that these cheeses and meats don't need to be refrigerated, but kept at room temperature until you open the package, so they aren't high-end or gourmet. But they are fun and enjoyable to eat. read more

We tried their smoked brisket, smoked chicken, and a few of their delicious sides. The food, service, and atmosphere is top shelf. We discovered Barrett's fairly recently when some neighbors took us there for some take-out wrap sandwiches. The store is really neat - lots of craft meats, cheeses, and other foods. Although it's a bit pricey, the selection and quality are top notch. The sandwiches we've tried were fantastic. The brisket is probably my favorite - made to order and with lots of options. The pulled pork is another family favorite. Some users complained about the bread - we have typically been ordering wrap sandwiches, so I can't really comment either way. I will knock them down a bit because when we went to buy food, they were out of quite a few things, among them the "Barrett's Creamy Mac & Cheese" (which I had planned to try as my dinner) and the "Homemade pea and bacon salad" that was highly recommended by some friends. I understand that restaurants run out of things from time to time, and that in order to serve fresh food they have to limit the quantity they make every day, but this was early - we were planning on a 4:30pm dinner - and to be out of so many things so early shows a lack of planning. Instead of the mac and cheese I had planned on trying, I got a half slab of ribs. They were good, but a bit overdone, which dried them out a bit. I also could have used a bit more sauce on them. They were one of the only menu items I've ordered that wasn't worth the price. Service was pleasant and fun. No complaints there. Overall, I'd recommend checking out Barrett's, but don't get your heart set on any particular menu item, and be prepared to pay premium prices. read more

We've ordered takeout from Barrett's several times, and while our previous meals were great, not excellent, this time we got their cooked ribs. All we had to do was warm it up low and slow and they're ready to be devoured. I would have to say they have some of the best ribs I've ever had. The meat fell off the bones and the sauce was just right, not to sweet, not too tangy, and not too much. The taste of the meat can still shine through. I've had their brisket before, but maybe I don't like it as much as other people do because i've had the most amazing brisket in Austin, TX in 2002 that I still think about often and there is just nothing that will ever compare. read more

Barrett's has the best pulled pork in southwestern Michigan in our opinion! The Oakland and Stadium locations are always clean, and the staff are very friendly. The one item on their menu that is lacking, in our opinion, is the beans. I was truly disappointed in them. With smoked meats that great, I expected their beans to be much better in flavor and have pulled pork in it versus ground burger. The flavor the beans also was disappointing -- not much flavor. In fact, I think if I went to the grocery store and bought a can of a certain brand name and took them home and microwaved them, those would be better. Their pulled pork sandwiches and meats are what bring us back! Whether you take it home or eat in, you will definitely enjoy their meats! If you like to mix sauces, they have several to choose from -- spicy, tangy, and sweet! Personally, I like mixing the three together. Combo meals do not come with drinks, not a huge problem just good to know as I was not asked if I wanted a drink and had to go back to get one after. Mac and Cheese for a side is a great choice every time. Sandwiches are not drowning in sauce which is nice. Grab napkins as even a careful will get BBQ sauce on thier hands with the sandwich. The meat from tjod place is excellent. The customer service... not so much. i ordered a meat box for my husband for Christmas. A good friend recommended them, and I wanted to shop local instead of on line. I picked up my order and took it home. When I arrived home my da realized I had the wrong box of meat. I called and was asked to bring the incorrect box back. I drive back, and was given the correct box- which had m name on it. Not sure why the young man at the counter did not see it to begin with. This young man told me to track down the manager because she wanted to speak with me. I asked him to go get her. I was not going to wander around the store looking for her. I explained I drove an hour round trip to being back the wrong box. She just said sorry, it's hard to find good help. I was very disappointed this was the response. Sad to say this place is starting to get lazy and live off its reputation. Widely regarded as the best bbq in town. That's an easy claim to make considering there really isn't any competition. Prices are high for what it is. The food is good, but not outstanding. For the prices they charge I expect more. I also seems they aren't very "community minded". I've asked them on three separate occasions if they would be willing to donate or deeply discount some catering for local nonprofits. These weren't large catering jobs either. Each time I was met with a resounding no. Too bad. There are several other local establishments willing to help their local community. Time to step up your game Barrett's. read more

Barrett's is a great find. Great location, clean, decent prices. My party of 15 or so was really happy. I had the open-faced brisket sandwich and adored every bite. My husband & I ate here for the first time today. Half of the building is a store where they sell jerky, fresh meats, beer, salsas, jams, etc. The other half of the building has tables to eat at. It's very clean, with a rustic cabin feel. The food was pretty good. Descent prices. You order your food up at the counter, and then they bring it out to your table when it's ready. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to others. read more

This place is a joke. Poor service, have a bunch of young girls working the counter, getting things right does not seem to be a priority for them. Been coming here pretty much since it opened. When it was family run the service was great but it would appear they have gotten too big. Bummer. In reading other reviews it would appear taking phone orders and having them "vanish" is a common theme here. So, it sounds like the answer is either don't call in your order or find a new smoked meat store. I guess I'll have to find a new smoked meat place. read more

We got take-away from Barrett's today after friends recommended it. We ordered brisket, Mac & cheese and baked beans. I know brisket is hard to cook, so I am putting that into my review equation. They have great smoked foods, a butcher counter, and a small store with all kinds of great stuff to but from jerky to chips to drinks to almost anything else you would want. However the best part is the restaurant. They make all kinds of bbq food. My kids love the beef brisket and pulled pork. My wife goes for the turkey breast and I go for the special sandwich like the smothered and covered an open face beef brisket sandwich with mashed potatoes, homemade chili, and cheese. Yesterday I had their limited Reuben (March 1-17). I love Reubens and have tried 100s, but this was probably the best one I have had in my life. It was just so delicious and moist. read more

2 weeks ago I ordered 15 lbs of beef brisket for the New Year's eve party and indicated I'd like to pick it up around 4 or 4:30. The gal says "we may not be open that late but will give you a call if we're closing earlier". So imagine my surprise when I came to pick up my order around 4:15 and the Portage store is closed. But hey, there's a handwritten sign for another customer on the door with a cell phone for Tim Barrett so I call him. I explain to him that I'm standing in his parking lot with no food to be picked up and 10 guests arriving within the next 2 hours. He says "we filled all orders by 1 pm and we did not miss a 15 lbs beef brisket order". Asked me when I placed the order and I told him and asked him what I am supposed to do now. It is at that point that the call gets disconnected and NOT on my end. Bad cell signal, I can relate to that. Surely, he'll call me back. Riiiight...NOT. Mistakes happen, but I've been a big believer, even in my own business, that it is what you do after a mistake happens that makes the difference. Apparently, Tim is not familiar with that concept. Not a "sorry", not a "hey, maybe one of our gals made a mistake". Clearly, this was my own fault for ordering from them. The good news is, I won't be making that mistake again - this will be the last order/purchase that I will place with them. Luckily, the folks at the Chicken Coop came through for me. read more

Above average smoked meats. I've been several times and had brisket, ribs, and chicken salad sandwiches. Much better traditional southern-style BBQ than Moe's or Hogzilla in Battle Creek, better quality meats used and better tasting sauces. I don't care for the horseradish sauce that comes with the brisket and I wish they would offer Mac and cheese as a side. Pricy, but overall worth it. The new location on Stadium Drive offers eat-in seating. Probably not comparable to Slows in Detroit, Union Woodshop in Clarkston, or Meat in Lansing but lots closer and plenty reliable. read more

We were sent to Barrett's by a friend who knows about our dietary restrictions. At lunch time on Tuesday they were busy, but we had our lunch and were out the door within 5 minutes. We both had the pulled pork, which was good, lean and well processed, but the bun was abysmal. It was a dry, sorry excuse for a piece of bread, when Barrett's could really be hitting a home run with a little effort by providing Zingerman's bread or something homemade. The potato salad and coleslaw were fancied up deli versions and tasted bland. The staff was very friendly, so if you're not a bread snob Barrett's could work for you. read more

They have frozen meats, fresh cuts, sandwiches and cheeses. You can buy a whole side of cow if you want! They have a large seating area too if you want to dine there. Stumbled onto Barrett's a few years back and this is by far my favorite bbq. We have since moved to Waterford area where we can get Slow's, Yardbird, Union Woodshop...those places are good but they're not Barrett's good. Barrett's brisket is unbelievable, everyone who eats it can't stop eating it. When we lived in Portage we had Barrett's cater all our office parties and family get togethers, always a huge hit. The baked beans, cole slaw, white chicken chili are always great. Oh and in the summer if you want to impress at a cook out, buy their brats and hamburgers.
