Everything I've ever expected from a BBQ place. Steady lunch traffic-seated or grab to go. The brisket is melt-in-yer-mouth good, potatoe salad is good (with dill pickle, onion & mustard). The onion rings are great-thin and flour breaded; a 1/2 order is all a normal human being could ever eat! Place is clean, quiet and has plenty in seating (two storefronts worth). Was told this was the place to go for brisket. It was average. The beef ribs however, outstanding!! Fried jalapeños, delicious (cheddar cheese. Best way to do it.) Fried mushrooms, equally great. Pretty good! I've had the brisket sandwich, pork sandwich, and both kinds of ribs. The onion rings and jalapeno poppers for an appetizer were both great. Good prices for a lot of food. My main problem with Packsaddle is that it's extremely dirty. If you go there, just don't look up and don't look at the stuffed deer on the wall because they are covered in dirt. The ceiling fans are gross! The food was ok, but if the restaurant is that dirty in the dining area, what does the kitchen look like? I won't go over there again due to the dirt. One of my top places to eat! The waitstaff are super friendly and always make sure I have everything I need. The food comes out quick and fresh! The catfish is definitely my family's favorit! If you have an hour or so to wait for just a sliced brisket sandwich and fries this is your place. We went in at 1:10 PM and ordered, sat for over forty five minutes waiting and still no food. We told them to make it to go still waited another fifteen minutes. We also ordered onion rings that where terrible, soft & soggy. YUCK!!! I heard they changed owners again and whoever it is has no business running a restaurant. Staff was not trained and cook stood outside for fifteen minutes leaning on a truck talking to someone. We are not the only ones waiting, everyone in the restaurant was waiting for orders over forty five minutes. So if you have time to kill this your place for low quality BBQ. Some of the best BBQ I've had and for a great price. A small restaurant with tables and benches. Good for take out and large portions. My boyfriend had teh Cheesebeger wich was huge and delicious. I am not going to lie, We've had better barbeque at chain locations and local places in other cities. My husband and I stopped in to grab lunch expecting some of that Texas BBQ people talk about. Well, this wasn't it, but the place was certainly charming. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned the greasy spoon feel. My parents used to cart us around to places like this growing up and for me, it was a bit nostalgic. My husband didn't care for his food and found that he liked my chicken tenders more. He then found that he liked my fries (which I believe they cut themselves because they certainly look and tasted like it). In fact, we both liked the tenders so much we came back the next day. The two waitresses we had each told us "Oh, you're gonna love the tenders!" I've had similar tenders other places, but they really were good. They have BBQ sauce at the table that is also very good with them, even though they come with gravy. Anyways, this place is worth trying because it's got that local charm and the service is good. Otherwise, don't expect the best barbeque you've ever had, but the locals here seem to love it (more than five groups came in having placed take out orders just in the time we were there and several others stopped to eat in). read more

Came for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were seated immediately and our drink order was taken very quickly. The wait staff was very attentive and I never had to worry about asking for more water. I grew up on this place. It was a go to for good food. They admitted tonight that the CFS and steak fingers are now bought frozen, but they didn't tell me that the chop beef sandwich was the same chop beef you can buy in a tub at the grocery store. And the tub you buy at the store is actually better since you can ensure it's microwaved enough that it's heated through, not like the cold stuff I had tonight. In arriving at the San Angelo Texas airport I thought I would ask a local retail worker about the good Texas BBQ places in town. He recommended Packsaddle Bar-B-Que. Upon arriving, the building is shabby and parking lot dusty. In entering, I had the same feeling...tired old booths with light vinyl covering and shabby floors and walls. In the restroom, there was a gaping hole in the wall near the sink, like nobody cares to fix, afterall, its only a bathroom. I think a restaurant owner should care about a little paint and plaster and just basic cleaning which is what we do daily. Clean. Come on, its about the food...I kept telling myself. The portions look huge and fresh and inviting on their website, Upon ordering the food and seeing it arrive, the baskets make everything look small and light weight. Where is this big Texas BBQ feeling ? Where is the smells of the meat smoking and wafting around the building and the dining room? In looking into the kitchen area, you see a dirty old fashioned sink - dishes - area room with exposed wood paneling and lightbulbs which looked like something out of the 1930s. A TV was on and was blasting, the local news, at full volume. Where is this wagon wheel - West Texas BBQ restaurant with nice old fashioned Country & Western and Cowboy music? Instead, we have an obnoxious TV on...which I don't like. The food, I had the brisket, was sort of warm, not hot, and I felt it was lightweight in portion ...for the price and I finished my food in less than 7 minutes. I did take the advice of someone local and I will not fault him on that. The waitresses were talkative and friendly and courteous which was a breath of fresh air. I think this place needs 10 gallons of paint and some authentic and beautiful West Texas photos, wall decorations and uniforms for their staff. Seeing yellowing toys taped to the walls, was disappointing and I felt like these belonged in a hobby shop and not in a restaurant. WHO thought up this? Come on, its TEXAS and you need to think about BBQ food and how can we improve upon this? Anyone can dine at a corporate restaurant, but its hard to duplicate and market authenticity and freshly made food. Please renovate your restaurant and think about how you can improve the portions and flavor. It's a sad day. I've been eating here for many years and have been back twice since the new ownership took over. Today is the last time I will grace this establishment with my business. The chopped beef sandwich was greasy and smaller than normal and the bag of chips that is now served with it is a joke. Last time I'll pay $9.00 for lunch and walk away hungry. Others at our table ordered the beef rib plate and refused to take possession when they saw the one tiny rib on it. For $15.00 you'd think they would give you a little more food. My family and I loved this place for many, many years. The new owners increased prices DRAMATICALLY. I could've accepted the high prices but for the fact that the portions are tiny now, I actually walk out of the place still a little hungry. The original servers are still great but the ones that have been hired are not as attentive or as warm and friendly. Got the surf and turf. Three slices of brisket - it was very dry, not tender at all and lukewarm. This is the worst brisket I have ever had. The sauce helped me get it down. My favorite BBQ joint in San Angelo. I have tried a couple of others, but I ALWAYS go back to Packsaddle. The building itself looks like a former gas station, and the inside decor does not do much to disguise this. But that is what makes it so spectacular! The walls are decorated with license plates and barbed wire. The tables are plain, and the food is served on Styrofoam plates. But, the beer is cold and the food is mouthwatering! My favorites are the brisket and sausage combo plate; it doesn't get much better than that! I come for the meat, but it comes with sides, so I usually have beans and potato salad. I usually prefer coleslaw, but their potato salad is better. The table is supplied with sauce, hot sauce, and bread. I believe their hot sauce is on sale for home consumption. The service is quick, which means that the wait is usually short. I never leave wanting more, and usually I take some home. You can't get good Texas BBQ everywhere, so I should be going to Packsaddle once a week while I have the chance! read more
