This place was a pleasant surprise and well worth the drive from downtown Atlanta. Kids were able to do horseback rides but also pet all of the farm animals. WINE DOWN AT PAINTED HORSE | it was a chilly day but we brought the pup to sip on some wine at the Painted Horse Winery. After trying a few wines at the bar, we got full pours of our favorites and headed to the outdoor heated/covered patio. The heaters weren't on at the time and it was a bit chilly and windy in the shade of the patio but we were thankfully able to hail someone down to help us light up the heaters. Outdoors is beautiful, although a bit packed while we were there so we were restrained to the patio. We also ordered a cheese board to munch on while we sipped. As we were leaving, we stumbled upon the barn and saw a donkey, horse and a goat. Overall, the wine was ok but the vibes were great. We were expecting a family friendly environment, a place where we could eat and the kids could run around and see the animals. We had an excelled birthday celebration here at painted horse! We were able to get a table on the patio which was great because we were surprised with rain. You walk in and there is a selection of snacks and charcuterie trays you can order as self serve. They have wine slushes and I got a tropical wine slush that was delicious! We had such a good time I forgot that get photos! The owners stopped by our table and were so friendly and courteous and asked us if the music was too loud but it was perfect! The painted horse had a very pretty venue, it is mainly outside on turf grass or on mulch. I do want to say be careful coming in heels because it is sloped down a hill, but it has a very cute seating area. It was a little close to animals for me and I could smell the horses while I drink my wine and I didn't necessarily love that, but it was still cool to look at them. I wish they had some more umbrellas or fans around the Area. I didn't love this place for the wine, I thought it was overpriced and not very good. The staff was nice and they offer free shuttles to and from the parking lot because the driveway is very long. The flight of white wine was not worth it for $25 but the live musician was great. read more

The winery itself is small, but undeniably a lovely setting--beautiful grounds, a pleasant atmosphere, and nice staff. On the surface, it felt like an ideal place to host a party. Unfortunately, it wasn't all positives as the experience felt excessively money-driven, with excessive charges and add-ons at nearly every turn. What was initially thought of as reasonable in terms of costs quickly became frustrating as additional costs piled on, many of which felt excessive and petty for little or no meaningfully. For what we paid, we expected a higher level of value, transparency, and service than what we received. In short: a nice venue, but the bang was absolutely not worth the buck. I recommend proceeding with caution if you're considering this winery for a private event, especially if value and customer service matter to you. read more

Recently discovered this gem! I've been looking for a local winery with good wine, plenty of seating, and a nice view. This place checked all the boxes. There's something for everyone to do - go see the animals in the barn, listen to the live music, and of course drink some wine. Bailey and KJ were wonderful hosts during our private barrel tasting event. The session was engaging and informative. There was a little hiccup as our GPS lead us to the owner's residential property, but this confusion was corrected by emails and calls. The entrance to the actual winery was a tad before where the GPS ended us at. The winery side is where the twinkling lights are in the distance. It was easy to miss this little entrance as it was pretty dark. We learned a lot about how wine is pretty subjective and how blends are created among other factoids. Both KJ and were knowledgeable and knew what they were talking about. It was interesting to know that most of Painted Horse Winery's sales came from well, sales of their wine. But they do offer tours or varying types that are apparently the fun parts of their jobs. Our small little group of four definitely enjoyed the interaction and tasting of their four wines: two whites and two reds of varying strength. There was also a small cheese and fruit board that added a nice touch and helped with the alcohol consumption. The only thing I might have done differently from hearing about the winery is to come during the daytime so one could experience the vastness and animals of the property. read more

Another glass? Wine not?! I love this little gem so close to home. Normally I have to travel quite a bit to feed my winery addiction; not anymore! Now it's just a short trip to Milton, which is so much more approachable on those slower days where a long trip is unappealing. What is great, and a bit different from other wineries, is you can bring your own food to Painted Horse. There is no food sold on site so plan accordingly if you like to munch while you sip (like I do!). There are tables all over and a huge lawn area - so bring a picnic blanket or some chairs if you prefer to relax on the lawn. There is also a VIP area with a nice view up a short flight of stairs. The wine itself was yummy. The staff was friendly and helped us make decisions on what to drink. We got a tasting for $25 - it included 3 wines of our choice. I prefer the tastings where you can choose what you want, instead of the pre-selected ones, so I was really satisfied with this set-up. After the tasting we ordered a bottle of our favorite, la grange ($38). There are also animals here and they were really cute. All in all, it was a very peaceful afternoon and we really enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely return for more sips (and this time with a picnic basket)! read more

My husband and I went there for the first time on 9/10. One end of the tasting bar was full, so we went to the other side. The woman working the bar kept walking past us, but never acknowledged us. We waited over 10 minutes while she talked it up with the other customers. After they all left, she said, "I can help you at this side.". We left and will not go back. I've been debating with myself over whether I should review Painted Horse. Lady Jane and I have been coming here for months to enjoy the peaceful, bucolic venue, sip some of their surprisingly good wine, and listen to better-than-average music in the natural amphitheater put back at the Horse. Debating because we are selfish and would prefer that it not get crazy popular and covered up with people...ya know? Cuz it's really outstanding. We first went there for a private party catered by local artisanal cheese shop Cheeses and Mary @CheesesandMary. We've since been fortunate to be invited to other private events there which can be held in their 2nd floor patio that overlooks the place. Lovely stuff. Most recently, we joined one of the Horse's exclusive wine tasting hosted by vintner John and Owner Pamela, during which we learned more than our brains could hold about oenology (the science of wine) and viticulture (how to grow grapes). Wow. Did you know that a healthy grape branch needs 13 leaves optimally? Heck...I didn't! John even let us sample some of his experimental wine. Jalapeño wine?? Who knew! The Painted Horse differs from North GA wineries in that they get most of their grapes from Cali and the Pacific Northwest growers. Then John works his magic and voila! High quality wine you don't mind paying for. The grounds were originally a working farm and that's never more evident than when you enter the property and see the horse stables and kids riding the ponies. (They don't let the horses sample the wine, so there are no equestrian DUIs.) All the above now said, I recommend you *not* go, so that we have this awesome place all to ourselves. This review concerns only the food. My husband and I visited with the intention of sampling their wine flights and having some food from their menu, which sounds a lot better than it is. We were rather surprised at a cost of $25 for 3 very small glasses of wine. Their menu selections of mostly sandwiches looked good on paper, but in reality were no better than what you'd buy on the go at a quick stop while pumping gas. A sad looking ham and cheese sandwich on sourdough with a pickle but no other condiments, a small hoagie bun with only cheese and cold cuts which they called an Italian sub, along with a pickle and a bag of chips, a small styrofoam bowl of soup and a small bottle of water, together with the wine, was a whopping $75, ouch. For that amount of money we could have had a superb lunch at our favorite Italian family run restaurant, Casa Nuovo, just down the road. If we go back, it will only be for the wine, we'll eat elsewhere. read more

My friends and I decided to head over to this winery for the weekend for a birthday celebration. First off it's near the Avalon which was great for afterward if you want to take a walk around or get dinner. First off... there are horses! and cows and goats! I fed two horses treats. Be advised there is an animal smell given the proximity of one of the barns and the outdoor seating area. Construction is happening inside the tasting so the outdoor seating is the only option. You can bring your food to munch on with the wine, and you can get a tasting of 3 wines for $25, the Rose, Grenache, and Zinfindel were my tasting choices and I liked them in this exact order. My group ended up buying a bottle of the Rose to share for I believe $38. I would go again for an afternoon of relaxation and just a good time. A cooler of your favorite crackers, cheeses, dry meats, fruit, and maybe some chocolates would be great. Beware the flies! Summertime is hot... like HOT HOT. Bring ice water for hydration and possibly some Nuun tablets or liquid iv. Early spring or fall might be a great time to go if extreme heat isn't for you. Verdict... Go it's a lovely time and the staff is very nice. side note - if you bring horse treats you can feed the horses on your way in! The rule of thumb is to keep your hand flat and offer, they will sniff and if they want it they will take it. There were way too many flies and the charcuterie board was $48 and did not include crackers (those were an extra $19 for two small bag of crackers). When my sister and I were leaving- and were cleaning up our table and throwing away trash - we politely asked one of the employees walking around (the same one I purchased the wine and charcuterie from) if she could take our empty bottle and cooler, she declined and said we could bring it up to the front. Not even 2 minutes later, we saw her take another table's wine bottle and cooler. My sister confronted her and asked her why she wouldn't take our bottle and she said "I'm not a bus boy" and that "they requested another bottle." She didn't even ask us if we planned on ordering another bottle... I am usually pretty laid back, but this was horrible customer service and I will not be returning. read more
