Looking for a different kind of date night to break out of a rut and decided to explore Painting with a twist. My husband proudly announces he can't draw a stick figure, so this was definitely out of his comfort zone, but he willingly joined in the surprise. There are a number of paintings available on different nights, so the first step is to pick the one you want to do. From there, everything is set up for you with a plate of paint colors, a primed canvas, brushes and instruction. There's no presumption that you actually know what to do and Rodd, our instructor explained everything in plain English - not artsy lingo - so that you can follow along. Both instructors were there when you made a mistake or needed assistance or more paint and they were patient through the process. Neither of our paintings will end up in a fancy gallery, but we were happy with our finished works and the two hour class went at the right pace. read more

Tried to do something small for my birthday. The event was inexpensive. I think it was $20-$30 and all supplies were provided and we kept our painting. Also, we had an option to come back and continue work on our painting at no cost. The instructor was very patient and the mood music was great for the group. We laughed and chatted together and even met some other people. It was BYOB so that was awesome and we had snacks of our own. I went solo on this one but I had a really fun experience our teacher was really good and paste us very well. The group was about 20 and we had a lot of fun. It's great that you can ask for more materials if you need them and the pricing is pretty decent for what you get as an experience. There's plenty of parking and the area is decent. The staff was really nice and helpful in any way they could be. the inside of the shop was a lot of fun a lot of paintings and pictures hanging everywhere. This was my first time doing a paint and sip type of event and I really liked it. I would definitely recommended to anyone who wants to try it is a lot of fun. I enjoyed my visit! We attended the date night class. Where you paint one side and your partner paints the others but we each get our own canvas. It could be done as a solo painting too. Our class was scheduled to start at 7 but we got there earlier than I anticipated. Around 6:36 so we decided to see if we can have a seat. Surprisingly the door was open and Gabby checked us in. As the first pair inside we got first pick on our seats. The only seats that were reserved was for a bigger group. Other than that everyone got to choose where they wanted to sit. We got in our seats and everything was already, ready for us. I highly suggest coming in early! They share a parking lot with a bunch of other places and will fill up fast especially on a Friday night. It was why some couples were late for the class they had a hard time finding parking. Bring snacks and drinks! It was my first time ever going to one of these so though I knew it was BYOB I thought I would be way too focused on painting to want to eat or drink. But there are some points where everyone needs to catch up and there's also a break while we wait for our paint to dry. Those moments leave lots of opportunities to enjoy what you brought with you. Gabby was absolutely great! Great personality and amazing art skills. She joked around a lot with us and the class clown. Making the class very entertaining. Always very willing to help and answer questions. You can ask all throughout the class and she'll gladly help. Our class did go over two hours. And she was more than willing to stay behind and wait for us to finish our little adjustments. She wanted us to be happy with our final products. We stayed almost thirty minutes after trying to make our palm trees more desirable. Even if you're a beginner like we are it's worth a chance! Our paintings didn't come out bad! read more

I have been here twice now and I love this place! I'm a novice to painting, always want to try, never wanted to put in the time, and this place is perfect for me! They set you up with all the materials, you don't need to bring anything but yourself, friends, and drinks/snacks! The instructors are so nice and willing to help you out. The first time here, I went for a couples event. We painted a 2 part canvas that lines up with each other. I was scared that the picture would be so bad but in the end, it came out pretty well. The second time, I was able to let go of that stress because I knew that in the end, it wouldn't look so bad :) I can't wait to bring my daughter to make some more paintings! read more

I came here for a kid's birthday party and we had a great time. The instructors were lively, friendly, encouraging, and made it very easy for the kids to follow along. There was also a camera on the instructor's canvas which displayed what she was doing on a TV screen for those that couldn't see the instructor which also helped quite a bit. They are very attentive to getting more paint if someone needs it, walk around and offer compliments and suggestions. It is amazing how they can even have small children paint something that I would never have imagined they could do. The kids all seemed to really enjoy it and it was interesting to see all the creations each with their own individual twist. They have lots of blow dryers around to dry your newly created Picasso so you can take it home with you immediately and not have to wait for it to dry and make a second trip to pick it up or worse, forget that it is there all together. There is plenty of parking in the shopping center. They have a calendar of dates showing the various paintings they offer so it makes it easy to choose a painting that you would actually like to do. I can't think of anything that I would offer in the way of suggestions or improvements from my experience there. read more

I've been to several painting nights at locations in DFW and had an amazing time. Were my paintings masterpieces? Uh no. But that was because I'm not an artist. That's why I'm paying someone to help me. However, Mo matter how awful my paintings were, I left with a smile on my face after an evening of fun with people in my class and the instructors. Until we moved to Austin...for Valentine's Day my fiancé took me here to paint a sloth as...well I mean it's a sloth. Need I say more? He had heard about all the fun times I had at the locations in FW and was excited to join me. Then we walked in and we'll, things went bad real fast. The calendar outside didn't match. No problem, things happen. I get that you have more than one class as the sign/calendar indicates. I get that we looked confused. I get that you told us when we walked in you told us we were in fact in the right place. What happened after that can best be described as someone in customer who maybe shouldn't be. The woman who turned out to be our instructor spent the next few minutes arguing with me over the calendar (which by the way was not accurate, but who am I?) when it wasn't that serious. I decided to have a drink and enjoy the class and let it go because I knew she would probably have the same wonderful teaching style I was used to. Nope. I've never been to a class where we were not encouraged to interact, have fun, play, and were rushed. The poor girl next to me was there by herself and asking us what to do because the instructor went so fast. When we stopped to have "drying time" she was nowhere to be found. We ended our class 30 minutes ahead of time. Of course, she didn't have time to stay in the class let alone slow down to teach us. I guess she too had a date to get to. So overall, yes, I've enjoyed my experience at these studios. This one has not given me the warm welcome I've experienced elsewhere in Austin. read more

We took the family for a bit of post holiday painting. Half of us had never done it before. I think everyone had a good time. They provide great direction and our paintings came out pretty darn good. My only complaint would be no long break in the middle please. Most of us felt a bit rushed at the end and could have used that time. But all in all great fun. read more

This whole painting class + BYOB wine thing is something that has really taken off, and I'm glad! If you've never done it at all, just go. It really is very, very, very fun and a great way to spend an evening. I am NOT an artist and was not looking forward to it when I was invited to another place for my mother-in-law's birthday. I ended up with an impressive painting and genuinely had a wonderful time. Fast forward to me trying to think of something my husband and I could do with both of our parents. Some of us were more hesitant than others, but we had a great time. I loved the instructor and the painting. I did find it to be a little rushed, but I recommend asking questions if you really have them. It's very fun to do something different for the night and end up with a painting you can be proud of! We loved checking out each other's paintings and seeing how they were all different, but great. From where I'm sitting, I can see both of our paintings and they look great! Oh my goodness- this was so much fun! I have wanted to try this for a while and I finally made the jump. I enrolled in the paint your pet class, in which 1/2 the proceeds went to an amazing rescue organization called Shadow Cats. The instructor and staff were very friendly and gave the information in a fun, informative way that was easy to follow. They also gave great support throughout the class. I will definitely be back! I hope all the stores are as awesome as the RR one (I live kind of far from this one- but I would absolutely make the trip for another fundraising class). read more

A friend and I attended a class here a month or so ago. We have been to multiple other painting classes and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Throughout our research, we found that PWT was offering paintings that looked unique and challenging. We were interested in trying something different and hopefully learn something new along the way. The instructor we had that night was nice, but wasn't very helpful. The class felt really rushed and the instructions were unclear. It seemed we were flying through the steps and that took away from enjoying the class itself. We usually have fun painting and trying something new, but that night it was not the case. It felt as if we were on a timed obstacle course and we only had a certain amount of time to reach the finish line. Although Painting with a Twist has beautiful paintings, our experience at this location made us decide not to come back. read more

There is a Paining with a Twist location closer to my house but chose this one because of the particular paining for the night. We arrived early and the lady was very nice and asked where we would like to be seated as she was still setting things up. We had our personal table in the front which was great. The event space was spacious with a separate private room that can be used for other private events. The room was decorated with art of various themes and it was very clean and bright. The overall event was pretty good. There were 2 groups attending who brought their food, wine and the sorts. They were provided ice, cups, napkins if they did not pack any. The painter who led the event was very friendly. She had a great assortment of songs on her iPad that played in the background and it was relaxing to paint and hear all the painters sing along in a low tone. So these are the only issues I had and my reason for 3 stars. 1. Painting did not start on time. There is a 15 mins before arrival time for check ins and well after start time people were entering and preparing snacks and eating... Around 7:45 is when we finally put paint on canvass. (We drove an hour to get here, if closer this may not have been a big issue) 2. The beginning was rushed. I think this may have had to do with the 15 min late start. For people who have not painted before it would have been nice to have more time to get the background right because there is no changing it. 3. Hair dryers are used to dry the paintings which takes a while when there is a big group of people and 4 hair dryers. 4. There seemed to be a rush at the end because the extensive time it took between the few breaks to dry paintings. I would definitely frequent Painting with a Twist because I think the experience is dependent on the group of people present. I think the two groups who were painting while we were there were more into the "Twist" than the painting. read more

Just recently moved to the area and was excited to see that there was a Painting with a Twist close by. Went on my birthday and enjoyed every bit of it. I love the setup a lot better than the location I have gone to in the past. The employees were very nice and accommodating - we were seated in the back because we were walk-ins but asked if we would be able to move so we could be closer and they allowed us to move. I'm a programmer, not an artist, so this didn't appeal, but my wife talked me into going, and I'm really surprised how much fun it is. Just... SO different than art class at school! We've been three times now, twice just me and the wife, and today we brought three friends! As their logo suggests, you can bring your own food and drinks: I generally bring pizza and beer! How it works is, everyone in the session paints the same picture (you check on their calendar when booking, and pick a class that's painting a pic you like). They sit you in front of a canvas and a little easel on a table, give you all the brushes and paints you'll need, then the artist on the stage walks you through, step by step, how to paint the picture, by painting it themselves and talking along, with a finished version beside them so you know what you're aiming for. For the more complex shapes, they sometimes have stencils and chalk to make it easy; in others, they just explain how to paint it. Everyone's work, nonetheless, comes out looking different, unique, and yet somehow right and good and like it wasn't painted by a tipsy oaf slapping paint on a canvas with no real idea what he's doing. I mean, REALLY good. I actually feel proud to stick these on my wall, and not like "I'm only putting these on the wall because the kids drew them" but actually "I think this looks really good and it makes my room look good!" You've a limited amount of time, a couple of hours, sometimes three, so it's always a bit rushed, but that's part of the fun: you don't have *time* to be a perfectionist about it. For the first, we both did a Tardis floating in space. For the second, we did the Round Rock water tower, and both sent it to our parents: perfect gift for parents living a long way away! Today, we did a blue-red feather exploding into birds. I asked if I could have yellow instead of blue, and did it as a phoenix feather, which worked out surprisingly well! My parents will be visiting in a few months - I'd like to take them to a session with a couple pic. I think they'll get a lot out of it. These aren't art classes. They're a bit of fun. They don't teach you how to paint your *own* art. Think of them as being the same as one of those places where you can go and paint your own mug: you don't make your own mug! In the same way, here, you don't make the topic. But you make it *yours* anyway. Nontheless... they've given me a lot of confidence with it. I find each time, I'm experimenting more and more, following their instructions less closely and doing my own thing - which they strongly encourage! So maybe they teach without making a lesson of it :) read more
