the facility is nice and well kept. but the attitude of the main staff needs serious consideration. he talks to people with a demising disrespectful manner and acts like a military camp want to be! I don't think there is a need to use the F. word every other minute and yell at people and threaten them that they will be kicked out . The selection of steel targets is incredible -- there are easily over 100 different targets spread out from 100 yards all the way to 840 yards. They even have knock-off style steel targets for some extra fun. You can shoot however you want -- prone, off a bench, off a tripod -- whatever fits your setup. I shoot at discount gun mart indoor range twice a week for years, so I'm semi experienced, comfortable with guns, understand gun safety and respectful. I had a terrible experience at Pala because of one personnel..The absolute worst person in charge. Imagine a middle age, mildly obese, dirty blond white guy just ready to yell and curse. Pala is an amazing range with terrible people running it. Ima try and keep this short. They offer discounts only for police and military. Fuck us in fire and EMS right. But anyway. First time being there I played it safe and took my fix mag rifle. We drove in slowly looking for parking and before even checking in we got yelled at for driving fast. We weren't. They yelled saying it's 5mph yet there was no sign posted. When there was a cease-fire I got yelled at for not dropping my mag. I told them chamber is empty with a chamber flag and it's a fixed mag. We continued shooting and was helping my friend with his zero and someone else there told me "hey I think that old man (one of the assistance there) took one of your mags" Wasn't sure who it was so didn't want to start a fuss plus it was only a ten rounder. But later noticed throughout the day one of the old farts kept looking at me as if he was waiting for me to say something so he can school me on why I didn't drop the mag even tho I was being Cali compliant. We continued on shooting there was a spot that opened up in the shade I wanted to move there and old fart put his feet on the chair like he was claiming it. So I finally had enough packed my shit and peeled out of the parking lot. Sorry I know I said I would keep it short but just had to include all the negatives. What a great range! My first time there was last week, it was a bit far to travel but SO worth the drive and a lot closer then driving out to the desert to zero in my Bergara B-14. Being able to drop lead progressively out to 872 yards is awesome. I love the way the ranges is laid out and the verity shooting areas. The range safety offices were some of the nicest and helpful folks I have ever met at a range. I guess it was obvious that I had never been to their range when I was just standing there watching. The range safety offices went out of their way to greet me and show me how things worked and based on what I wanted to do the best location to shoot from. It can get hot at the range so remember to bring plenty of water and your equipment. I will be back and will get a membership once they are available again. read more

If you want to be able to shoot out to distance this is a good place for it. The range is kept up really nice and they have very nice bathrooms. The cease fires are right on time and they allow you enough time in between to do what you need to accomplish. They are good about telling you the range rules and answering any questions you may have. It can sometimes get fairly crowded but that is to be expected if you need a local range that you can shoot at distance. This is a great private range that offers access to the public. Their website has a calendar that lists "recreational shooting" (open to the public) at the long range - typically it is every third Sunday (full hours), some Saturdays (sometimes full hours, sometimes a couple of hours after morning comps), some Fridays, and some Mondays (full hours). But check the calendar as groups sometimes rent the facility. The range itself is obviously set up and laid out by people who understand shooters. There is ample paper stands out to 300 yards. At 300 and beyond on the flat area (out past 600) there is an incredible amount of varmint steel and game silhouettes (they hold varmint silhouette matches here every month). Then there are additional terraces and elevated spots with steel out to 887 yards. The layout is impressive and I never feel like I might have fared better bringing my own steel. Adjacent to the long range is a rudimentary pistol caliber range. It an assortment of steel but it is minimal compared to the other, better-equipped rimfire range and pistol bays. But being open when the long range is open is welcome and helps if you want to do a bit of pistol shooting and/or take a break from the long range line. The property is older but is fully covered with moveable benches. They are completely ok with prone shooters. If you are early and lucky enough, they have boards and stud segments you can use in combination to give yourself a bit of elevation and be more in line with the slope at the furthest distances. I have found the staff to be fair, friendly and no-nonsense when it comes to safety. I have never felt any bad vibes or attitudes from the range officers. There are only porta-potties for restrooms but they are well maintained and clean. There is no other running water or vending machines otherwise so bring food and hydration if you think you will need some. Behind the front benches, there are gun racks, numerous chairs, large cable spools, and tables in the lower area where you can store safely emptied and open firearms. You can park right up to the lower portion of the covered line so transporting firearms and your gear is simple and easy. Rustic aesthetics aside, the range is well run and equipped. The chairs are a bit older so I bring my own adjustable stool for bench shooting. The tables are solid but may need to be shimmed to be fully stabilized. read more

You get what you pay for. With that said, this place is worth every penny they charge. It's very well maintained, with (loads) of challenging steel targets to engage. The staff is like any other volunteer or paid employee of a gun range: no nense, direct, and loud! This is a good thing if you enjoy shooting in a safe environment, especially when novices are present. The pricing is a bit high. I believe its $80 annual, plus $15 per day. Id rather them offer a higher annual membership and not have to worry about paying each time you visit. Non members pay $30/day. The final insult to this is that if rec shooting is all that you do, you are limited to a very small window (IMO) during the week that you can utilize the range as it is often taken over by LE departments from around the region. That fact alone should tell you the quality of this range. Pricing is always tough, scheduling is even harder, they've manage to do both decently but its clear where the focus is. With all that said, I am happy that "small" window exist for all of us who are not being paid to train. The Bottom Line: This place is GREAT! Tip: BRING CASH!!! All levels and ages of shooters today at the range with handguns, long rifles and boring C.A. compliant ARs. My first time here was on Friday, 5/31/19. I told that to the young man that checked me in, and, he could not have been more helpful in explaining the procedures and rules. He applied a military/ Law enforcement discount, and I went and found an open station. The range master,a former USMC retired Master Gunnery Sgt, was friendly and helpful, he's all business and enforces the rules, as he should. He introduced me to a couple of regulars, Lou an Doc, they also could not have been more helpful with helping me sight in a new scope. It's a no frills range, if you want to shoot, sight in,whatever it has targets out to 800 yds, what more do you need. Shooting happens in rural places, so what. This place is perfect for all shooters,especially a hunter such as myself looking to get in the practice for long range shots. I am definitely a return customer. The BIG need to renew steel targets for the pistol and shotgun range along with doing some yard work for all the weeds everywhere the reason for 3 stars. This was my first time at this range, and let me tell you, it was the greatest experience, EVER!!! The Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are the friendliest, most professional, and all around great to be around. The range layout is phenomenal. The rim and center-fire steel targets are places through the entire range so you are not limited to just shooting at one target. I was engaging .22lr targets from 50 out to 200 yards, and higher powered rifle targets out to 300 yards with plenty of other targets to shoot at out to around 900 yards. This place is a shooters paradise. I can't believe I waited this long to visit. They also have a dedicated pistol range with steel targets as well. I'll have to hit that one next time. I was having waaaay too much fun stretching the legs on my rifles. This will be my new home for shooting. No more killing paper targets for me. Paper, I'm officially divorcing you. I have been shooting at Pala sine 2005, and the range is in the worst condition I have ever seen it in. The weeds are overgrown, making it hard or impossible to see the steel targets. The roads going up to the targets are badly eroded, making it difficult to get to, without a big 4 wheel drive vehicle. I am scheduled to shoot the Long Range Varmit Match June 2, 2019, and the people running the shoot, sent out an email asking shooters to bring out weed eaters, hoes, shovels and tools to clear the weeds. Pala Shooting Rrange is as good as they come. Absolutely Southern California's best long distance range. I have been shooting here twice a week for the last five months. Jared, T.J., Jim and Scully are dedicated and knowledgeable. Safety is their main priority. T.J. is a former Marine armorer, capable of handling all firearm issues including correct mounting of scopes. Jim is an extremely knowledgeable long range shooter who will bend over backwards to help you shoot consistently at any distance. As a retired Marine of 28 years, I feel as safe around these guys as I did on any range in the Corps. Pala Shooting Range is top notch and the best long range shooting in North County. Most local ranges are only 25yds at their maximum distance, whereas the Pala rifle range starts at 50yds and goes all the way out to almost 900yds. The facilities are very clean and well maintained, although don't go expecting the Waldorf Astoria. Bring your own targets, a stapler to put them up, a jug of water for when you get thirsty, an empty chamber flag, and plenty of ammo and you'll have a great time. The shooting bays are shaded and set up very well; at the rifle range you can shoot either sitting, standing, or from a prone position. There is also pistol shooting on site. The range officers are professional and helpful; but will not put up with any unsafe behavior nor are they there to clean up after you, clean up your own brass and don't leave a mess. I'd give them 5 stars; but their hours of operation are limited, their website is hard to find and often mis-listed (the website is actually http://range.palatribe.com/ ), and the range fees are a little on the high side. None of that actually has anything to do with sending bullets downrange though and in that regards, at least in North County San Diego, this is the place. read more

This range has great target acquisition and layout. That's about it. The property was junky, old, unkempt and with no place to sit during time outs. I can deal with that. However, what I have a problem with was the extremely rude, sarcastic range master who literally, personally insulted both my friend, an E-5 in the Marine Corps and me, a life NRA member. I was charged $10.00 extra over the $20.00 military fee when I mentioned my NRA status. We were treated like rank rookies with pretty nasty, unprovoked insults which, had I been a hot head, might have turned quite ugly. I will never go back to this range and put myself back into that kind of situation. It was beyond uncalled for and over the top rude! Further when we were prepared to take our place, we approached this man who was at the end of the firing line at the rifle area and dead asleep! My partner had to literally kick his foot to wake him up! Totally unprofessional! read more

This is an excellent range. There are targets from 50 yards out to over 800, both paper and steel plates. The range officers are friendly and helpful. Best time to come is on a Monday or Friday. Hours on those days are 10am to 2pm. (It's open on weekends too) Take Hwy 76 east from I-15 to the Pala Casino and turn left at the traffic light in front. This road veers immediately right and goes to a stop sign. Continue straight and watch for a sign on the right that says DIP- the road to the range is right there- you can't see it 'til you're right on top of it. Turn left there and go about 1/2 mile to the range straight ahead. You'll pass by a cemetery on your left and a sewage treatment plant on the right. Pay the fee before unloading your gear. Be very careful on Hwy. 76. It is one sharp curve after another and has been the scene of many accidents, especially at night. If you want to try your hand at long-range shooting this is the place for you. read more

I started building the Pala range in 1992 under name of North County Shootist Association. Prior to Pala my wife and I ran Cowboy action Matches at Cam Pendleton, Rain Bow Range and the Old range in Temecula. I hated giving it up this 23 of March 2018 . After 25 years of running it . But many health problems have developed and had to give up running it. Most weeks I put in over 60-70 hrs . I will miss all the great shooters who shot there. I had many , many friends help build this range, properly the best in CA according almost of the shooters. I did most of earth work, built over 90 percent of all steel targets on range, as well as the paper target hangers. we have over 22 police dep. .Marines, Coast Guard, Border Patrol, shoot there for training along with Lina De Fego on weekends and matches run by NCSA. In past years we ran BPCR matches both state and Regionals, Lever Rifle Silhouette matches both state and regional. for many years we had the largest Cowboy action Matches in Cal going over 125 each month, Most months we have averaged over a 1000 total shooters I see in reviews that some shooters were not happy with range or how it was run, but you cant please every one all the time. We ran a safe range in 25 years only had one shooting incident. The Pala Tribe will run range from now on , they have many great plans for the range future . Some will start very soon. One think to remember. Pala Band Of Mission Indians has been great to work with and no where else in Southern Cal Could a Range like Pala be built. Tribal Chairman Robert Smith has been great to work with and realizes how important this range is to the shooters of Southern Cal.
