One of my favorite spots in downtown Phoenix lately has been Futuro. It's one of those places that feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard ...part coffee shop, part creative space, and very Roosevelt Row energy. They feature Mexican artists and have locally made goods often for sale. It feels more curated than your typical coffee shop, but still welcoming and unpretentious. The menu is also way more interesting than expected. You can tell there's real intention behind the food, drinks, and presentation. Don't expect a quick grab-and- go coffee, as it takes about 10 minutes to get your drink but I promise it's SO worth it! read more

This review is for the coffee shop. This place is aesthetically beautiful. The decor has Hispanic influence combined with minimalism. I ordered the Mazepin iced coffee. First it took about 20 minutes to receive my order. I understand I was there on a Saturday however it wasn't super busy and after I ordered my drink there was about two people after me who got their order first. There were about six people at the coffee bar and it seems like they all moved a snails pace. Not to mention, they have a very hipster, lackadaisical attitude. I will say the person who looks like the actor in 'The Room' was nice when bringing my coffee. Once I got the coffee, I was very disappointed. For a coffee shop that promotes these avant garde drinks, this tasted like the most watered down latte. Didn't taste the marzipan at all. read more

The stylists are great and have a strong understanding of more trendy and unique styles that other places may not be as privy to. This is a rating for their hair salon. I initially set up an appointment Priscilla, who got the date wrong and then completely stopped responding when I tried to reschedule. Then I scheduled with Rose. Rose kept misgendering me. i also specified at the start that i would like to keep all my hair that was cut, and I realized while I was turned someone swept away a lot of my hair. I went in for a big chop and she gave me a pretty "femme" haircut, not the most gender affirming at all, which makes sense considering I was getting misgendered left n right. i got my haircut by someone else in about a month. Seems like they just ask people for pronouns bc its "the thing to do" but dont actually consider what that means, esp in the context of hairstyles? bizarre. I got my brows bleached by Angel. She bleached my brows twice, applied toner and then forgot about my brows. the toner was on so long it got them dark again. She then bleached my brows again and burnt my skin. My brows were YELLOW AND RED walking out of there. was so excited for this place but ended up severely disappointed. a few friends of mine (also trans) have had terrible experiences here. read more

This place makes an incredible coffee. I've ordered the Lechera twice. It's worth every penny/peso. Just an FYI it's a thing apparently to leave pesos in the tip jar. There is a very strong art presence that changes out every so often and there's even a gorgeous looking hair salon in the building as well. Such a creative venue for multipurpose use. The structural architecture from the outside to the edgy interior design is pretty amazing. I had an opportunity to meet the owner, curator, and hair stylist... I'm sure he had many other hats too... but he educated me on the space and I had much more appreciation for it. It's a place where local meets creative intellect where ideas and imagination are free to run wild. That's my type of place. If you ever get the opportunity, check this venue out. read more

I was a little taken aback that this yelp celebrity had moved salons. But was willing to go anywhere she was, especially since she was now walking distance from my crib. She's been chopping my hair for over two years and has never let me down. And I can be rather picky when it comes to my hair (sure everyone thinks they're picky about their hair - but I'm talking borderline neurotic here). The Palabra location doesn't disappoint either. Beyond the creative, energetic and fantastic hair stylists is an art gallery space that I am always intrigued to gaze at while getting a cut. It may not be everyone's aesthetic, but I love the energy of the entire space. Is it possible to feel inspired while getting your hair cut? I think yes! I can't count the number of unhappy hair-dos I've sported while searching for a capable, visionary hairstylist: you know, that legendary artist whose medium is equally hair and geometry, who understands not only that you want your hair to make you look good (crazy!) but who can also can visualize what may suit you and even create it, with painstaking meticulousness and a bevy of exotic combs. Imagine my pleasure to find not one but two of these rare creatures, and from the same salon! Vanessa and Skyler did my hair last night for a fashion show, and they did an epic job. They prettied up the seven of us models with that big, dreamy bedroom hair of the '50s and '60s. When they took my hair out of the rollers and brushed it out, I was amazed. They had transformed me--I was that kind of lady who puts lipstick on before she gets out of bed and wears three inch "bedroom slippers" with fur tufts everywhere. First of all, that kind of glamour doesn't exist anymore and it was awesome to see IRL. Second, I don't think my hair has ever looked better. And third, THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF HAIR!: When a hairstylist can make your hair look a way that you could never possibly imagine, and opens up a whole new realm of How You Could Look. V+S did this for all the girls. They customized a look for each of us that flattered our features and our style while maintaining the overall line of the theme. AND they did so with professionalism, grace under time constraint, and pleasant attitudes! I can't wait to visit them at Palabra and actually get a haircut there. He treats his chosen medium with the greatest respect, working with each client to make sure the style and color work with their hair texture, lifestyle, and taste. Came here all the way from CA, and was not disappointed in the slightest. I had butchered self-cut hair that desperately needed saving and Rosa Rivas did more than saving - she absolutely crushed it. Made my hair everything I hoped it would be and more - (I now have the shag of my dreams!) Rosa did such a good job easing any anxiety I had about cutting my bangs and changing up my look as she explained her whole plan and invited me to critique her as she goes (although I had absolutely no critique as she is a total PRO). She was also highly skilled at working with my hair texture and waves to make the cut easy for me to style on my own and suit my needs best. Not only is she a wonderful artist, she made lovely company and was so great to talk to. The overall space was really airy and simple - I liked the vibe and the music they played. The whole experience felt very inviting and inclusive, the other employees were very kind as well. The haircut was $75, which I found to be far more than reasonable. I would recommend anyone to Rosa and Palabra for their wonderful work and hospitality. Next time I'm in AZ, I'm certainly coming back. read more

Two of my favorite things have come together! 3 years ago I stumbled upon Christia when the stylist that had been recommended to me at a salon close to home was out on maternity leave. I am an extremely picky, obsessive,... lets say "challenging" client so I was compelled to decline setting up an appointment with someone who had not been recommended to me. At my first appointment Christia listened attentively to all of my requests (there were many) before getting started. Over the course of the appointment she was equally professional and personable and the haircut turned out awesome. I am used to some salons giving the scalp massage prior to the haircut but she also offers a hot towel and arm/hand massages after the rinse. I would never choose a salon on that alone but they are nice touches. Over the last three years I have followed her to three different locations (each further from home) because she is an incredibly talented stylist with an engaging personality and great sense of humor. Every haircut I have had with her has been exemplary and I cannot recommend Christia highly enough. When I found out she was moving to Palabra I was thrilled! I could tell her recently transitory nature was a journey to find to perfect home from which to serve her dedicated clients and I know she has finally found it. My first Experience with Palabra was a Sentrock show a year ago. I have been to many galleries in the Phoenix Metro area and from the moment I pulled up Palabra felt different. It was NOT a stuffy uptight experience but instead full of energy, enthusiasm and passion for art. The owner Jorge is passionate about creativity and takes a genuine interest in others. He has learned about the kinds of art I like and takes the time to text me photos of pieces he thinks may interest me.
