I happened to stop by this Cuban eatery along my trek home. The El Cubano to my surprise was nice and crisp, yet soft almost like melt in your mouth while chewing. The Espresso coffee was right enough for my liking as coffee gives me too much the jitters most times. The employees were kind and had a smile when spoken to. Great spot & as a fellow Cuban it was great to have a bite of our own food up north. Only reason I gave it a 4 start instead of 5, was because of the gentlemen who rung us up yesterday morning. Attitude, and gave us croquetas that were squashed. When we asked for 3 new ones... he gave us some. I went twice before writing a review. I'm a huge fan of Cuban food. So why 3 stars? Let's break it down! Ambiance and Aesthetics are great! They definitely put some great work into making sure there is a great Cuban Cultural vibe. The music is pumping! They have a really nice outside spot to eat and hang out at. But very small. Staff is great and friendly! Staff is very bilingual. Overall clean. So why 3 stars?! In comparison to other Cuban restaurants I go to frequently. Their portions are smaller and prices more money. I went the first time for breakfast and the size of the breakfast sandwich for the prize was not worth it. Did it taste good? Yes, but I was unsatisfied. I also had coffee, which was very good but also about a $1 or $1.50 more than the norm. My wife had a shrimp empanada- I personally hate when empanadas are 70% empty. Great flavor though but nope! On My next visit, I went for lunch with some friends. We all ordered the same thing- steak bowls. Not very good. Flavorless actually. Disappointing and portion sizes were not a lot. It could be because I'm Latin but I believe they should have more seasoning on their food. So portions, pricey and flavorless food took 2 stars away. I think they are worth giving a shot. I believe I will come back but only if I'm around. For me, it's personally not worth a frequent visit. read more

Went here while on vacation a couple of months ago.. I thought I'd reviewed this place, but I didn't! So nearby at home I do not have any delicious Cuban coffee! We stopped in for lunch, ordered too much food and coffee, and ended up with no leftovers The Cuban sandwich and the medianoche (my personal fave) were so good. Let me start off by saying what an amazing family! That is how welcoming they made me feel. We came in with the thought of ordering some coffee after church, to end my birthday festivities. Upon entering you could hear music and laughter, on the tables there were #2 balloons. You hop in line order and sit down we did such and opted for food along with our coffee. Cake samples, and milkshake samples were offered throughout our dining time. Come to find out they were celebrating their 2 nd Yr anniversary on March 24th amazing on my birthday! So fun, the restaurant all joined together to sing Happy Birthday to me, the owner adored our 3 yr old picked her up (as if we have known each other a lifetime) gave her a tour of the pastry area and gave her another cake sample. It made me feel so great to find such a homey environment. That is what I am used to and they definitely nail it here! The food was amazing, cooked to perfection, the yucca fries were PERFECT!! Not greasy like other places. When I am back, I will order a batido and everything else on the menu. Inside is lovely small and cozy just like a family business in Cuba or Puerto Rico. They currently serve dinner two days a week, and that's what we went for. It's a tiny restaurant, but they still had a live, two-person band! I rather liked them. It's truly nice to have a taste of Miami up in St. Augustine. Having spent over a decade in the 305, I'm pretty picky when it comes to Cuban Sandwiches. So many places get them wrong. Paladar gets it right! The secret is all about the proportions and the press. And this sandwich is crisp, melty, meaty, gooey, and delightfully balanced with enough acidity from the mustard and pickles to make a mouth happy. The fried food was tasty too, from the ham croquettas to the mixed selection of empanadas. We tried a beef, a chicken, and a shrimp. Everyone in my party had different favorites. But the crisp crust and tender pastry were worth the calories. Where Paladar regrettably fell short was in the sweets department. The sweet treats looked incredible! The tres leches, which is one of my favorites when done right, was regrettably laced with almond extract which detracted from the experience. After one bite, I could go no further. The flaw in the flan was different, but just as devastating. The custard was far too dense. For a moment I thought it might be flan de queso and not flan de leche. Perhaps there are some folks who prefer flan this way. If so, Paladar is your place. For me, I'll be sticking to the sandwiches. But I do hope to return and try a Frita and maybe one of their breakfasts. Good Cuban is hard to find, and this small spot is simply darling. read more
