They did an amazing job creating this space for the restaurant. It's trendy and upscale casual. It feel very welcoming. The menu didn't appear to change too much from the old location on B83. Our server was sometimes visible and other times missing. Our appetizer order was never put in. We asked for it after our entrees came out. The food was decent, not excellent. The restaurant is clean and presentable, but not sure how long that will last. They ran their other two locations into the ground. Both locations on B83 and Nolana feel dirty and have visible filthy everywhere. It's stoical of Valley restaurants. Sanitation is NOT a strong point with this restaurant. That is the fault of the managers and owners. The hand washing station near the bathroom had no soap. I notified the manager who said he would fit it, but when we left there still wasn't any soap. Next time I visit I'll just log a complaint with the health inspector if it's not rectified. I hope the mall management keeps them on their toes with cleanliness. read more

This girl's got Palenque Grill on her mind. Always. Soon as my plane touched down, all I wanted was some of McAllen's most delectable seafood - from ceviche and aguachile to caldo de marisco. And who can forget those chips and bean dip. I wish Houston would offer up frijoles like these - refried beans with chorizo and cheese. (One point for McAllen.) You can make a meal of that dip. But don't, because there is far more on the menu that warrants exploration. There are two locations to this much-buzzed about establishment, and both are fantastic. Exceptional northern Mexican style restaurant. First off the service was first rate. Waiter had a positive attitude, he was helpful in making suggestions and he visited the table frequently to refill drinks. Chips and hot sauce were exceptional. Choriqueso (chorizo and cheese) appetizer was excellent. You roll the cheese into a fresh flour tortilla. Oh man this was good. We stuck to the tacos for the main course. Love love love the food, the service, and the atmosphere here. It's a little pricey compares to most Mexican restaurants around the area, but trust me, it's all very worth it. We came in on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was almost fully packed, which is a very good sign. They even had live music playing. Not the loud, up beat type, but the soothing and relaxing one. Perfect for the setting. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. We got the Choriqueso for appetizer, stuffed tilapia with shrimp and stuff pepper with cheese and shrimp for our entrees. Everything was so so good. The setting is a little different. Almost like an open family diner room, but somehow, it seems to work for even a good date night. Before it used to have a authentic Mexican flavor that we loved now the food is over priced and the food isn't that anymore. Not worth the price. Second time here for lunch (1st time was when they 1st opened so it had been a while and now I remember why). We were seated quickly & our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Big dining area but, tables are really close together and gets kind of loud. Also, prices are kinda high for lunch! As for the food...Mixed emotions about it. The beans & salsa that come w/the chips were really good but, the chips were super stale. A new appetizer (papitas endiabladas) which was supposed to be very spicy were actually very bitter & sour. I only ate half of one while gagging the whole time...I returned it. My Mom's grilled chicken salad was generously portioned & the cilantro dressing was delicious but, they charged $1.50 extra for cheese (which they barely put any). My plate (Don Pancho's favorite: puntas de filete al albañil) was very disappointing! Claimed to be very spicy & it wasn't at all! The meat was also very tough! Both corn and flour tortillas were good though. I prefer Palenque Grill over the regular Palenques, mostly due to the comfort of having an attentive waiter and the cleanliness of the restaurant. I absolutely love the ribeye steak and the few times I order something different I regret it. But not because the other food is not tasty but because the steak is so moist and full of grill flavors. They have several options for all types of appetites ranging from salads to seafood to tacos to steaks. They give you chips, bean, and salsas when you sit. You can ask for more- don't be shy. Sometimes a pianist is playing or even a guitarist. Either way the atmosphere is very pleasant. The only recommendation I have is that they create an attractive waiting area. With the high food prices the restaurant could use an upgrade. Currently they have a bunch of random chairs. Adult recommendations: RIBEYE or any type of fajita Kid recommendations: the nachos or the tacos. Note: The kid's enchilada plate only has one enchilada and a side of rice. My kids like the pitcher of lemonade. Cheaper than buying separate drinks. Not recommend: Fideo soup- little flavor or the guacamole as it is very basic. This review doesn't even concern the food, because we didn't even get to try it when I went with my coworkers, but based on many of the reviews I'm glad I didn't bother. Basically, my review is based on the fact that we went in and asked to see a menu to look at prices because we were there on business and have a maximum we can spend for dinner. The hostess hands us a menu and proceeds to grill us on why we need to see it. Do we want to sit down? Have we picked what we want? Surely we want to sit down now, right? Are you ready? Why are we looking at the menu? Finally, because we're being pressured we answer that we're just looking at the prices. Then things got weird. She starts saying she can give us a discount. 25% off? 50% off? What do we want to pay per person? Then she calls over some manager who asks the same questions. He can "make it work" for us. Do we want 50% off? What is our maximum? He'll work it out for us. We ask him if we can talk about it because they're being really salesy and pressuring us to stay, so we all turn around to talk and the manager guy walks around us and blocks the exit. Instead of letting us talk he AGAIN starts asking, do we want dinner? what kind of entrees? do we want drinks too? how much can we spend per person? By now most of the restaurant is staring, we all feel really uncomfortable with the car salesman type pressure to eat in the restaurant, the prices really are too expensive, and so we end up handing the guy the menu and pushing our way past him out the door. REALLY REALLY uncomfortable and weird, and why do they need to bargain with people to get them to eat there anyway? I definitely wouldn't go here ever again. read more

It started with two unwilling servers arguing as to who would serve us, which neither or did and we waited and waited. Finally we asked the front desk who would help and some other servers came. What seemed to be a bad dinner that was about to ruin my appetite, it turned out to be pretty good thanks to one of those waiters who did come with a great attitude and a smile. The food is always great here, but the service at times is a hit and miss. But thanks to that server, dinner there was a hit. (It could've gone bad thanks to those first 2 severs). Tasty, but the quality of the beef was just 'ok', and the chips and salsa were good, but nothing special that warranted a $24 bill that didn't even include alcohol. And for the other co-workers that I was eating with who did order a margharita, it was an additional $10 per drink - not even a scooner size! This is a great spot for a romantic date or anniversary dinner. The live music flows with the ambiance perfectly. I read several mixed reviews about this spot and was on the fence with ordering. The margarita was typical, nothing special, but the food was delicious. I ordered the fajita pollo con onions, spicy jalapeno peppers, steamed vegetables, rice, and beans. The meat was juicy and very flavorful. The salsas were the best and the rice was perfectly textured. The food didn't take long at all to come out and we were served by multiple staff members. I was on the fence at first, but this is definitely a return spot. A lot of people are saying the food is overpriced, but you're paying for the ambiance. It's worth it if you're looking for a nice night out with live music. It's worth the money, and it's not overly pricy considering the food portions. Great Mexican food. First time here and loved it. Started with queso fundito and it was great. Had the chicken in chipotle sauce with vegetables and white rice and it was excellent. They didn't have vegetables cause of some health scare so substituted fries, I tried to be healthy lol, and they were ok. Obviously frozen and fried. Service was great. Recently, my husband and I ate lunch at Palenque Grill. We'd not eaten there in some time, and as during previous visits, we were both very pleased with both the food and the attentive service. We were not dissappointed during this visit. For starteres, the warm bean sauce and roasted vegetable salsas served with chips were both so tasty. We both ordered the shrimp/camerones fajitas. The shrimp and vegetables were both just right. The avocado and pico de gallo salsas fresh and flavorful, and both the corn and flour tortillas, really good. The atmosphere is hospitable and somewhat rustic. Other than it being a little pricey for us, I don't know why it had been so long since we've visited Palenque Grill, but I believe that we'll be back sometime soon. read more

My family and I had a degrading experience visiting this establishment. We came in on a Monday before rush hour. We waited for our server to take hour drink order. As we waited, we noticed other people arriving and getting their drink orders taken right away. We continued to wait. Then we saw another party seated next to us and they got their drink orders taken right away. At this point, we felt bad and like they didn't want us there, so we decided to leave. I like traditional tacos. This place has a great selection, and I really like the bright decor. The chips are homemade, salsa was a little above average, and they also provide a version of bean dip. I found the bean dip pretty bland personally. The Carrentoneros is a seasoned sirloin taco plate, and it was good, but no real pop. I thought the selection of sauces which included an 1 avocado base, 1 tomato base, and one with heat was very tasty. You get 4 tacos which was more than I could finish. Overall, I liked the place. This will easily be the most expensive bad food you'll have. I ate here on a Friday evening around 6. The restaurant had a typical crowd for that night; there was no wait for a table and others, as far as I could tell, were getting seated immediately. If you've been to any Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant in the Valley, then you know what to expect. A waiter will come and bring chips and salsa, take your drink order, come back, take your order, bring the food out, and then disappear for the rest of the evening. The food was mediocre; I had some beef fajita tacos with avocado and cheese on corn tortillas. First, their idea of "garnish" was a large whole grilled onion seemingly thrown on to my plate. Each taco was wrapped in foil, presumably to give it that "eating in the streets at a taco stand" feel. If you can get past the foil without the tacos slipping out of your hands from the grease, you'll find a delightfully tiny taco. The meat was cut with the grain, as most Mexican/Tex-Mex places do for whatever reason, so it was nice and tough. It was apparently seasoned as it was cooking, as no flavor had penetrated the meat, but was slightly crusted on the outside. I believe I ate two before my jaw muscles gave out and I asked for the bill. A group of 4 with beverages and plates, no alcohol: $70. Yep. For poor-quality beef thrown on a griddle, not marinated, and then to add insult to injury, sliced with the grain. read more
