Authentic Mexican food is probably my favorite of all--and this place absolutely knocked it out of the park! I've seen some comments about the consommé not being salty enough... but let's be real: if you think that, you probably don't know what real Mexican food is supposed to taste like. The flavors here are spot on. I had the quesabirria tacos, and they are truly to die for--cheesy, juicy, and packed with flavor. The street tacos are also a solid choice if you want to try a few different things. But whatever you do, don't leave without dessert. There are so many amazing options, plus ice cream! I highly recommend the strawberries with Dubai chocolate--they are absolutely divine. I'm still dreaming about that rich pistachio and chocolate combo... seriously unforgettable. Paleteria La Monarca is a true gem and my favorite snack spot! They have yummy snacks and great lunch and dinner options. The service is always top notch. The staff is also so friendly and welcoming. They have a lot of seating and it's very vibrant and cheerful, creating a great atmosphere for a quick treat or a full meal with friends and family. Of course I can't talk about this place without mentioning the ice cream. They have an incredible selection with all of my favorites, and it's always a highlight of my visit. It was empty when I walked in around 5:30pm on a Monday. However, I was greeted and the staff were friendly. The restaurant was clean and very cute. I liked the little butterfly painting on the wall. I ordered a Gordita platter with al pastor & Steak, which also came with rice and a salad. Then I had the churros, strawberry, original, and supposed to be caramel but she gave me 2 strawberries churros instead. I also had the Agua frescas, (fruity drink, strawberry milk), it was a little too thick for my liking. I think they could've made it a little more milky and water it down. Bc it was too thick for me. Lastly I had the strawberries and cream dessert that included fresh strawberries with cream (frescas con crema). Overall I really liked my Gordita platter and churros. I've been on a "find all the best street tacos in KC" kick and this was unexpectedly the best of the best. The carne asada and pastor street tacos were both moist and full of flavor, served generously on a double fresh corn tortilla. I spent my entire meal talking about how great everything was and how excited I am that one of the best tacos in KC is so close to my house. Already planning my next visit. This was so far off my radar that I didn't even think of taking a picture before digging in, so you'll see one of my tacos was already missing! I ordered one each of the carne asada and pastor street tacos and one chicken gordita. This way my first gordita ever and most definitely won't be my last. Menudo is one of those dishes that is not a common menu item at all Mexican restaurants. If you don't want to make it (which I don't) but love it on a cold Sunday morning (traditionally a hangover soup ) La Monarca is the place to go, especially if you live in NKC. I have bought it at a couple of restaurants but this one was so delicious our whole family commented as soon as they tried it. My only suggestion is to buy an extra can of hominy (down the street at Mercado Fresco) to add to it. That's how we like it, but not essential for the taste as it's flavor is amazing! read more

Stopped in for lunch. Don't let the older strip mall scare you off. The restaurant is brightly colored and clean with Spanish music playing overhead. Got three street tacos and an order of chips and salsa. The chips were thick, salty and crunchy and the green salsa had a nice bite. To be honest the red salsa was very thin and extremely bland. I would go for only green salsa next time. They had a huge menu for ice cream and desserts. I was full but would definitely recommend those based on the number of people I saw eating them! read more

We were very excited to read about a paleteria, a Mexican ice cream shop which usually sells simple food too, in the Northland. We've been there twice. They're located in an older, unassuming strip mall so there's plenty of parking. You walk into a brightly painted restaurant and there's several tables and chairs. There's menus on the walls that have pics of their frozen desserts and prices. On the counter up front, there are laminated menus for the food. You order at the register and they bring the food to you. Now, for the food. There food is quite good and it's authentic Mexican food. My husband ordered the menudo which was very good. It had a lot of meat and the flavor was of the broth was rich. It was spot on. We usually drive to KCK for menudo but we now have a restaurant that is 10 minutes away from our house! I got the crispy tacos and they were quite tasty. For dessert, we got the monarca sandwich. This is a piece of Mexican bread (a pastry) split in half with a sundae in the middle. Totally delicious. The bread was fresh and it had the perfect mix of ice cream, syrup, bananas, and strawberries. The prices are a little higher than what we normally pay, for this type of food, but not unreasonable. Another full fledged Mexican styled Paleteria in the Northland! There's really nothing better than a good Paleteria; I mean what's not to love about a place that offers tacos, elotes, fruity drinks, churros, ice cream and scores of other fabulous creations to eat, drink or lick. I'm thankful to have this place fairly close to my house but I was a bit disappointed in a few things as compared to other paleterias around the city. My steak torta was good size but was very skimpish on the meat and avocado. For $9 they could have provided a much heftier sandwich. The sandwich came with a small bag of chips and the worlds largest roasted jalapeno. For dessert I went wild and ordered the fruititacos. One of the most unique things I've ever had. Three tamarind candied tortillas topped with sliced strawberries, mango, pineapple, jicama, roasted peanuts, chamoy.... a wonderful treat. For spending $18, I received about 2 cents worth of hospitality. They really need to pick up the customer service! I truly hope they survive and I'll be giving them more opportunities simply because of the proximity and hoping the value on the other menu items are more in line with pricing. read more

Horrible experience and worst customer service ever! Placed an order togo and waited over an hour for food. I placed my order before 6 others and they still ended up with theirs before mine. After talking with them around 45 mins they said they were working on it.. I asked for our strawberry cream drinks while we continued to wait patiently. They then stated they are out of strawberries. At this time I'm irritated and asked for a refund - they couldn't even figure out how to complete a refund. Stood there for an additional 20 minutes and ended up getting $24 cash and lost the remainder of the $40 spent because they couldn't figure anything out. So I'm out $40 AND had no food. Don't go there. Plus the girl at the front counter was DISRESPECTFUL & should not be working in the front with customers - take her to the back in the kitchen where she's not around anyone. It was super clean, well organized, the menu is well thought out with a LOT of choices, you can tell that the person that owns/opened this place really put their heart into it. The customer service was amazing as well. Now the food: let me tell you, this was the best Mexican restaurant we've eaten at in a long time. Possibly ever. Full of flavor, perfectly seasoned, authentic, perfect portion size. We had the Quesabirrias w/ consommé, churros w/ chocolate sauce, churro cheesecake, horchata, and pineapple mango agua frescas. The drinks were so delicious and full of flavor! I love horchata, but my partner got the pineapple mango one and it was so refreshing. Bookmark this new authentic Mexican joint in the not too far northland-or just get in your car and go there now! Once upon a time, life in the northland meant a field trip to the city was in order for, well lots of yummy less vanilla foods;) while La Monarcha was not the first to bring street tacos and horchata to this side of the river they are worthy in their offerings, presentation, clean bright space & friendly & helpful staff. Don't let the Paleteria in their name stop you from seeking out delicious tortas & elote-they do have many offerings for your sweet tooth, but we enjoyed their crunchy beef tacos, steak quesadilla & cochinita torta especial, all deliciously on point! This newish Mexican food restaurant is located in a strip mall on North Oak and just south of 72nd street on the west side at the intersection of North Oak and 70th, along with several other restaurants. La Monarca is bright and clean inside. They have a large menu and also feature a big choice of ice cream. I ordered the al pastor and pork street tacos. My wife ordered a burrito and my son ordered the gordita, which was interesting as it appear to be a fried or toasted pouch filled with chicken. The staff was very friendly. The food was very good. We had only two minor complaints. (1) our order for three took longer than we expected (as we were eating a later lunch and there were not many people in the restaurant); and (2) you have to order your sides separately. So glad we checked out this new place in Gladstone. The elote is absolutely perfect, the Al pastor tacos are phenomenal, my kids love the smoothies, and the staff? They're seriously so kind. We've been several times and haven't had a single bad item from the massive menu and the staff is very understanding when young kids aren't the perfect quiet customers.
