One of those places that I've driven past scores of times over the years, yet never stopped until today. I had my heart on carne asada and al pastor tacos but they had neither today so I ordered a carnitas, chicken and barbacoa taco. The pork was fine - 3 stars, the chicken was plentiful and flavorful - 4 stars, but the barbacoa was out of this world! Easily one of the best tacos I've had. I'm not sure of the spices, but it had a pulled pork type texture with a Sloppy Joe consistency. After throwing on a little onion and cilantro from the condiment table, it was perfection. Top three things to note about eating flautas and enchiladas at El Paso de Norte: 1) I'm almost certain there are more than a few health code violations, beginning with the lack of proper ventilation in the building--there's significant haze in the room, the lack of employees washing hands as they are visibly seen handling cash and touching food with the bare hands in front of customers, and the overuse of old oils and old foods being served well past their original cook time. 2) There is smoke everywhere...you will come out smelling like fried foods, despite the large size of the establishment. It's clear that the large kitchen ventilation fans are not in use. There should be a clear distinction that while smelling like food isn't the worst thing ever, smelling like burn oil is. 3) Prices are great and service is fast; but maybe a little too fast. We ordered flautas and enchiladas at 11:01 AM, and were served at 11:03 AM. There's a large trade off between speed and freshness, with the first one being a priority. The plates looked better than they tasted. All fried foods have the same after taste: old oil. They almost always run out of foods...our plate included a makeshift salad in exchange for beans, which were allegedly included...probably for the best, as it's probably a healthier choice. The Champurrado was good. We love hole-in-the-wall type of places and frequent them often, but El Paso del Norte is at the bottom of the list of places we're likely to return to...at least for enchiladas and flautas. It didn't hit my bank until Monday. I went back in to have them fix a $90 mistake and the cashier called me a liar and told me to leave. And proceeded to talk crap in Spanish to everyone who would listen. We like their food, but will not be back due to service. El Paso del Norte is a grocery/taqueria in Kansas City's Northeast neighborhood. It's much more along the lines of the taco places I was used to visiting in KCK, where you order at a counter and then sit at a table in the store itself. Their selection of tacos was great, although the menu wasn't exactly accurate. They had picadillo, which I completely missed because I was going straight by what was on the sign. A couple of my friends got it, however, and it was delicious. I had a barbacoa taco, which was huge, and wonderful. Very tender and well seasoned. The salsa bar had flavors for every heat level, and both that I tried were great. The lady behind the counter did not speak any English, so there were some questions we had that went unanswered. El Paso has a great pastor taco! It is a little more saucy than most pastor tacos you will find, but the sauce is loaded with flavor. There is also pineapple mixed in with the meat. I could have just spent the taco crawl here, ordering a taco every 30 minutes and been more than happy. We were also intrigued by the chocolate cake and flan. It is a super moist chocolate cake topped with flan. Both the cake and the flan were delicious. This is truly a unique dessert. They have a nice selection of desserts and pastries and also make cakes that looked delicious, and I am not a cake person! The condiment bar had a spicy lentil sauce that was really good and different. It has a little too much of a kick for me to eat it like a side of lentils, but perfect added to a taco. Stop 2 on the August Taco Crawl, this place was the hardest to stop at one taco. All the fillings are right there in plain sight when you order, and they all look delicious. In addition to the standard barbacoa, chicken, carne asada and al pastor, they had some kind of fajita mix, potatoes and beef, and some others. Not only that, the first thing you see when you walk in the door is a big dessert cabinet out in the middle of the room full of single servings of sinful-looking sweets; right in front is a big case of pastries, and in the back is another case of beautiful whole cakes. And I had to save room for three more places? The barbacoa was unbelievably good-super flavor, juicy and messy, just like a taco should be. I chose chipotle sauce and onions from the condiment bar; the sauce was smoky and not terribly hot, and the onions were pleasingly sweet. We all split a piece of what I think was called Choco-flan: baked custard on top of really moist chocolate cake. Moist, like the liquid from the custard soaked into the cake-yummy! Omg soooooooooooooooo good! Flavors are so robust and delicious. Scratch-made tortillas from their bakery! Oh yeah!!! Everything is made fresh daily. We had the mixed shredded chicken and chicken mole burritos with beans and rice.. beware, slightly spicy for us non-Hispanic eaters, but I pretty much inhaled it. And the burritos are huge. I think they weighed a pound each! Of all the burritos I've eaten, I mean, all, this was THE most authentic tasting! I check out at least one new restaurant during every visit to Kansas City and during this most recent visit, I chose to dine at El Paso del Norte. Mexican food is a huge part of my cuisine at home - like multiple times a week if not multiple times a day. I was very pleased with the bright and open dining area - the décor was cheerful and avoided being tacky like so many Mexican shops. I appreciated the layout of the restaurant/ bakery - the drink coolers, baked goods, condiments, food service counters and registers were well spread out so no one felt crowded. As this was my first visit, I chose a variety of items to try. Two tacos - the barbacoa had a decent and respectable flavor but was significantly overshadowed by the amazingly well seasoned and juicy carne asada. The tacos are served in a warm corn tortilla and then you add the condiments at an island station - the salsas are all tasty but the red one totally rocked my poor gringa mouth - it was instantly on fire!!! One of the first things I noticed upon entering was a hanging chalkboard announcing they had cups of elote! I instantly knew I had to have some and I was not disappointed. The tender corn was crazy hot and had the perfect amount of cheese and seasoning - an incredible value. One letdown was the chile relleno - I usually try one at every Mexican restaurant - and while the filling was nice, it wasn't heated enough - the cheese wasn't melted and the chile was cold. The breading was very delicate and had a good flavor. The baked goods were plentiful and I chose a cheese empanada and the filling was delicious and creamy and smooth and just so yummy! I rarely eat bread but not only did I eat one with my meal but I went back to take some to go! The prices were definitely a treat - I fully expected to pay double what I did - what a pleasant surprise! I chatted with some of the other patrons to see what they had and one couple were enjoying the menudo and they highly recommended it to me - I contemplated taking some to go but I was about to head out of town so it will have to wait until next time. A few guys were chowing down on tamales and they were so passionate about me trying them they tried to give me one of theirs! I was stuffed from everything I had ordered so I declined their generous offer. Being a Spanish speaking white girl in a store full of Hispanics never intimidates me and I felt right at home here. As I was placing a to-go order, an older white lady was behind me and ordered in English and the staff was as friendly to her as to everyone else. I appreciated that they treated her so kindly. In addition to the two ladies ringing up the hot food orders, there was a cash register open off to the side to service people who just wanted bakery or other grocery items. That was another detail that may go overlooked by some but was clearly appreciated by those who wanted to grab and go. I stopped at that counter to speak to the manager and share my experience. Being a veteran of the service industry myself, I know how valuable feedback is especially if offered on the spot. He seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say and disappointed in the chile relleno situation. His concern assured me that he would properly address and rectify it. Overall, I was very impressed with El Paso del Norte - there was a good variety of menu items, the coolers & baked good shelves were well stocked and organized. I have to mention again the incredible value - the quality of the food was amazing and the prices were extremely reasonable - I don't want to say cheap because it sounds bad but I was shocked at how much I got for my money especially in a big city like KC! Came in on a Yelp Event Taco Crawl. Of the four we went to, this was my least favorite but that doesn't mean it isn't good. The tacos my friends had looked good and everyone complimented them. I had the elote. Others in our party had it as well and really liked it. They serve it in a cup. I prefer mine on the cob. This seemed to be the place to get the Americanized Elote. The bread is hard as a rock, and the menudo is so gross, I bet they change it out like every other month.... Once I swear.... I saw a RAT run beneath my eyes, it ran across from where I was standing... Ever since I have not been back...
