The hotel is charming and unique, and the restaurant has a nice space. Got the breakfast burrito and it was the most flavorless breakfast burrito I've ever had. I hadn't read that the meat in it was hamburger (not sausage? not bacon??), and it was a grilled hamburger patty. It was quite odd. And nothing was seasoned, it could have used salt, pepper, and other seasonings. The other 2 people in our party who had ordered this as well felt the same. It was a good size and the tortilla was nicely grilled, but those were the only two good parts. Just visited the bar. Ryne took care of us and was outstanding! He made cocktail suggestions that were spot-on and even though the bar was full, he made us feel like we were his only customers! My biggest turn off was that the whole experience was a little bit clumsy. Weird timing on taking orders, inattentiveness, pretty good but uncreative food. It felt more like I cooked for myself and then took it to a very loud, wide open room to eat it... Not bad, just could have been better. I might go back in like a year. What I tried (this was the restaurant week menu- so take that for what it is): Fried mushrooms- stuffed with cheese, pretty good, but I definitely should have gone with the soup option. Grilled chicken with veggies- the sauce and veggies were quite nice, overcooked, but very good flavor. Chicken is chicken and I was reminded why I never order it at a restaurant. I take full responsibility for that. Key lime pie trifle- this was not good. I love key lime pie, I picked this over the chocolate brownie option, that's how much I like key lime. This was very mediocre. 100% should have gone with the brownie. Gingersnap cocktail- this was pretty good. But the crystallized ginger garnish really carried the drink. Overpriced and overrated. Went there last night and ordered two Palette burgers ($20 each), the mushrooms appetizer (six for $14), a wedge salad and Clean Slate cocktails. The wedge salad was the most interesting thing here. The burgers were saturated in butter as a way to disguise the lack of anything else. If you are going to charge $20 for a burger, it needs to be inspiring. dLux serves a much better burger for $12. The appetizer was also overpriced for how little you get. Not a bad meal, just not worth what we paid. I would rather go back to dLux. read more

This is a tough review to write, because I have not actually eaten there. I hear absolutely wonderful things about the food, and so I made a reservation for 6:45 on a Saturday. I got there, and went to valet park. I was told they had no more valet spots available, so they told me to find street parking. I drove around for 10 minutes and could not find a spot. Great menu, land and sea protein heavy with some interesting dishes. Everything was plated superbly; the presentation was impressive, such as a cold stone plate for the Caesar salad. Clunky was the best way to describe it. We had a new server, who stated that when we started. I'm ok with that as long as they are trained. We ordered a craft cocktail and was fine. Ordered Lobster cake for app and Rainbow salad. Salad came out and no app until finally we asked and he forgot to put it in. Lobster cakes were small and not worth $16.00. Salad was well dressed and tasty. Had the steak and Shrimp special. Asked for description and if it had onions on it. Was told no but when it was served it had onions, server comment: "nobody told me that". I expect more for a $50.00 a plate steak place, especially with dietary restrictions. Went to Palette for the first time last night to celebrate my husband's birthday. There are only two reasons I'm not giving this place five stars: the restaurant was bustling - which is great - but it is quite loud, making conversation a difficult. When the manager was opening our bottle of wine, he was trying to talk to us about the vineyard and other wines from the area, and we could hardly hear him. And service, although friendly, was rather slow. Maybe that can be chalked up to staffing challenges but it did affect our experience somewhat. Those two issues aside, we were very pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the wedge salad with steak and it was amazing. Wonderful flavors and the steak was very tender. My husband had the fully loaded burger - it was cooked to perfection and delicious. The Brussels sprouts side dish was my absolute favorite. Best Brussels sprouts I've had in a very long time! We found the prices to be quite reasonable given the quality of the food and the generous portions. We will definitely be back and will happily recommend this place to others. read more

We went here for happy hour. We ordered two drinks (pointed to them on the happy hour menu) and two appetizers. Later the server told us that my drink was unfortunately not eligible for happy hour, which was odd as I had pointed to it on the happy hour menu. Figuring maybe the server was new, we just let it go. As we were in a rush to get to a show, we quickly paid. When I looked at the receipt later, I saw that they had charged $24 for one drink! They offer a color palette of creative sounding cocktails. This is their first week so right now it is a little underwhelming. Customers may also be annoyed to find out that to park in the lot you have to pay $12 for valet- and this was on a weeknight! It's either valet parking or find a spot on the street. An over-priced fast food restaurant. Except the food isn't fast. It's expensive and when it's busy the restaurant and service grinds to a halt. The staff and management turns over so much it doesn't run efficiently and the current management is borderline incompetent. The food was passable, nice ambiance and service. My biggest peeve is that they charged me $6 to park in their empty parking list as there was no on street parking I had no choice. I think the restaurant should validate their customers' parking and not expect us to pay to park in Madison. This is hardly like NYC. Even there some restaurants validate parking. I felt like we got the food quality of a Longhorn Steakhouse at about 5x the price. Or perhaps Texas Roadhouse for those that don't know Longhorn. We went to Pallette with a group of 8 for a birthday. From the start, our waitress made us feel very rushed, asking for our orders minutes after we sat, we actually had to ask her to slow down. The French fries, lump crab and bacon were ordered for the table. No qualms on the fries, and I loved the cute paint can presentation. The crab was not bad though barely could taste it through the heavy butter on all other elements. Bacon was literally just strips of bacon covered in sugar, it was a lot. I ordered a steak as it seemed to be the thing to do. The wedge salad accompaniment was definitely overdressed and the 'seasonal vegetable' was broccoli that was most certainly previously frozen, not local/seasonal as you might expect. It came in a little cafeteria style bowl next to my chain restaurant steak slice. The overall presentation was not appetizing and I definitely expected more from a restaurant the specializes in steak. Madison, is this really the best we can do? read more
