At the…read morefront desk, a guy told me the X-ray and exam would cost $290, and he repeated it several times. However, when I was taken to the room, the assistant said it would actually be $309. When I asked why, she said, "It's just a $10 difference," which is not true -- it's $19. I told her I would be paying cash (no insurance) and that I didn't appreciate the price changing before we even started. She said she would go check the price and never came back. After 40 minutes, I went out myself and found her just standing there. She said they had increased the prices and that the front desk "didn't know." Then the doctor, Robert Huggins, came in and said prices were higher because I made the appointment "a month ago." That's not true -- I scheduled it three days before. He apologized and agreed to honor the original $290 price, and even said he'd do it for $280. He gave me anesthesia at 11:10 a.m. and said he would start in a few minutes. But he didn't come back for almost an hour -- until 11:55. By that time, the anesthesia was already wearing off. When I told him this was unacceptable, he said, "You're right, I should've told you to come next week, because I'm too busy today." Then he gave me two options: he said he could either start right now and finish everything in 15 minutes, or reschedule me for another day. So basically, after sitting in that chair for three and a half hours, hungry, numb, and ignored, he suddenly decided my treatment could be rushed in just 15 minutes. That's not normal, and it's absolutely unacceptable. Even though it was an emergency for me and I decided to let him fix the tooth that day, I left the clinic completely drained and disappointed. No one offered water, no one apologized. At the end, he gave me a $50 discount, and I ended up paying $618 in total. I will never come back to this place again -- and I don't recommend it to anyone who expects respect, honesty, and professionalism

I wasn't comfortable with her diagnosis and questioned it being that I have never heard this from any of my previous hygienists. I'm now having to seek a second opinion and despite the fact I was willing to sign off on her recommendation, she refused to clean my teeth due to her own personal morals. I've literally never dealt with a situation like this before and I am floored that this even happened. I just received a phone call a few days before I was supposed to go in for my cleaning with Dr. Whalen stating that they are dismissing me and my family from their practice because they don't feel they're a good fit. I'm feeling my feelings on questioning the hygienists diagnosis didn't settle well and I'm grateful that I have an appointment set up with another doctor for a second opinion. I fully plan on sharing those results when I receive them. Extremely unprofessional of this practice to treat people so badly and be so dismissive. Not a good look for a new practice and I'm sure as time goes on, we'll be seeing more reviews like this. Not a good practice if you have any sort of dental anxiety, don't blindly believe a diagnosis and expect to be treated with kindness, respect and compassion. Dr. Whalen went as far as comparing my diagnosis and doing my cleaning to "painting over termite damage"! This was awful, embarrassing and uncalled for.

From the owner: Hello, Myrtle Beach!…read more I’m Dr. Michael Whalen, the new owner of Grande Dunes Dental. I recently took over from Dr. Chuck Corbett, whose patient-first values reflect my own. Like him, I believe great dentistry starts with education, connection, and treating people with care and respect. My fiancée, Kiley, and I moved here after a hot Phoenix summer made us crave a coastal community. After a year in private practice in Concord, NC, we visited Myrtle Beach and knew we’d found home. I earned my DDS from UNC Chapel Hill and completed a residency serving the Navajo Nation, where I gained advanced training and a deep respect for accessible care. I’ve continued to grow my skills and volunteer through Missions of Mercy, Give Kids a Smile, and trips to the Dominican Republic. Outside dentistry, I enjoy traveling, snowboarding, gardening, and time with our dogs, Marty and Benzi. Kiley and I are excited to care for this community with skill, heart, and gratitude. Warmly, Dr. Michael Whalen

I was specifically assured by the staff that they accepted my insurance and that the services would be covered under my policy. On the day of my appointment, the visit went well, and upon checkout, the receptionist again confirmed that everything had been processed correctly and that I was only responsible for my co-payment. Based on these representations, I left the facility with the understanding that my financial responsibility had been fully satisfied. Approximately one month later, I received an unexpected bill in the mail stating that my insurance had not covered the full amount of the services rendered. I immediately contacted the medical center for clarification and was informed that the charges were not fully covered by my insurance after all. Had I been properly informed beforehand that the services would not be covered as represented, I would have had the opportunity to make an informed financial decision regarding the appointment and treatment. Instead, I relied on the information provided by the medical center and proceeded under the reasonable belief that the visit was covered except for my co-payment. As a result of the inaccurate information and representations made by the facility, I am now facing an unexpected financial obligation that I did not knowingly agree to incur.
