Pan Chancho is part restaurant, part bakery/deli. I'd come in search of brunch on a weekend out of town. I ordered a dutch baby, huevos plate, and two specialty coffees. The restaurant is located in the back of the building, on two levels, and is slightly upscale, but still casual. The food portions and flavors were surprisingly lacking and was disappointing - I mean, the place has a cookbook that they sell! The place was popular and cramped. There was also a significant wait time for seating. I think the bakery/deli part of the business is the main draw. While I was disappointed with the food I'd ordered, I found the goods up front really interesting, obviously freshly made, and of great variety. Love this little bakery! Stopped in on my way out of town and grabbed a few fun foodie items to take to the cottage. Enjoyed a great cup of coffee and insanely delicious almond croissant - so so so good! You can also grab a delicious breakfast or lunch and stay here. I was seeking a brunch place in Kingston that was extra delightful - and this was it! Beautiful vibe and decor. You walk in and you're surrounded with breads, endless desserts, cheeses and spreads. Tucked away is a cafe, we were seated upstairs and were really impressed by how spacious it was. I knew it was my kind of place when they presented our cutlery wrapped in beautiful floral napkins, and my freshly squeezed orange juice in a wine glass. I ordered the Huevos rancheros and convinced my friend to order the Sweet potato hash with a Fruit bowl. I love creative mixes of flavours and variety. I was staying with my boyfriend at my Aunt's cottage on Wolfe Island for a couple days when she decided to take us here for some cottage groceries before she left us on our own which turned out to be such a treat! This bakery has a large variety of groceries convenient and tasty to anyone's tastes. We started by getting one of their fresh olive loaves though they had a wide selection including your typical types to sweet breads and unique savory breads. From there we grabbed some pate and a delicious maple white cheddar cheese that I snacked on and included in my sandwiches. We also took home one of their containers of sliced dark salami that I still crave back home in Miami! They had some prepared foods that looked tasty (like potato salad) but since I love to cook decided not to get. I did decide to get some of their smoked salmon that served me well for a tasty breakfast and they even gave me ice so that it would travel well. Lastly, we took a look into their dessert areas and ended up taking home a chocolate pecan pie, peanut butter chocolate tart, and lemon cream puffs-----the sweets were phenomenal! Absolutely love this place for brunch! You have your classic diner brunch, but Pan Chancho is probably the best slightly more upscale brunch in Kingston. Wanting to make the most of our time in traveling from Ottawa back to Ohio we made a late night stop in Kingston after the Senators/Bruins game at ScotiaBank Place and waking early to jog the streets, shore, and city of Kingston I spotted Pan Chancho for breakfast and a quick look at the internet showed it would fit the bill nicely; locally sourced, all natural, open early, and rife with options including baked goods, composed plates, and a small store of local/regional products - with a 12 miles under my belt, a quick shower, and a packed car we walked in the door just after 7:15am. Greeted by a friendly young woman at the door and asked if we'd be dining in or selecting items to go I told her both and within moments we were seated at the cozy cafe in back with a rich cup of dark roast as the items we selected from the bakery were plated/boxed and composed plates were prepared in the kitchen. Seated and chatting for just a moment before plates would begin to arrive our server stopped by to inform us that all of the preserves we'd be enjoying were made on the premises and with that butter and rich blackberry preserves arrived alongside our first three items - a lightly cocoa accented chocolate brioche, a slightly-too-dense hot cross bun, and an extremely disappointing butter croissant that was all dough and no crunch...a disappointing start to say the least and only bolstered by the quality of the jam. Moving next to better selections, a maple-butter tart from the pastry case arrived drizzled with additional maple butter and a dollop of whipped cream while apple cider French toast was presented with a touch of creme fraiche and 100% maple syrup. Proving once again that anywhere, especially in Canada, maple syrup makes anything better I particularly enjoyed the gooey tart while from my standpoint the toast could have tolerated a bit more custard, though the spicy cider notes came through with aplomb and worked beautifully contrasting the sourness of the creme fraiche and intense sweetness of the maple syrup. For the 'to go' portion of our order, two items were selected, the first a somewhat dry but nicely flavored vanilla cupcake with strawberry frosting and the second an extraordinary butterscotch profiterole with crunchy choux pastry wrapped around a creamy and salty butterscotch center - a dish all the more impressive in that it held up admirably to nearly six hours in the car without suffering a bit of sogginess and without a doubt the best item we selected from Pan Chancho that morning. Clearly not a 'dining destination' city, Pan Chancho was a nice find in Kingston and an interesting break from my usually well-researched agenda. Pricey but featuring high quality ingredients I would suggest less of the 'bready' items while focusing on the pastry/choux based options - though in general anything maple would probably work. read more

I've been dwelling on a 2-3 star rating. I feel this place if a bit overhyped. For a bakery they shouldn't have so many flies inside the shop. My breakfast order was French toast with an apple maple cream. The bread was doughy. Thick. Heavy. Didn't have a bad taste just felt heavy. My hot chocolate wasn't all that great either. Front-of-house Bakery/Market is a warm welcome. The colors and selections enough to amaze the first time uninitiated. I was however hunger for a Meal rather than take-away, so I passed the narrow path into the back Dining space and even beyond that was a back Patio. The environment is suiting of a laid-back Brunch spot. French Toast with Apple Butter Crème Fraîche($10.50) - Apple Cider Bread and Maple Syrup The ingredients are all fresh house-made and has character unlike any Franchise Brunches. Very much appreciated for the price paid however I wasn't quite enjoying this French Toast as much as I was hoping for. I liberally doused as much Maple Syrup on for some flavour on a bland but healthy Meal. The Apple Cider Bread was ever so lightly Egg-soaked that I barely notice it as a French Toast. Btw I'm not a huge Bread fan, so I rather personally want it to have soaked in more farm fresh Eggs. The Apple Butter Crème Fraîche is similar to Apple Sauce mixed with Crème Fraîche. I appreciate the use of Cloth Napkins over disposable Paper Napkins. It really rounds out the whole classic Brunch relax over a cup of Coffee/Tea style. Maybe I should have went for a dish with more impact more umph. I'm probably not the usual Customer base anyways, so take this review with your choice of Salt grains. read more

I went to school at Queen's and have had a client in Kingston, so have come here many many times. When there for work, I often picked up something from the cafe for lunch - a greek yogurt parfait (ate this probably every other day - the bluberry compote is just right, and the house-made granola was packed with healthy nuts and grains) or a mix of their cold salad dishes (the spicy Moroccan chickpeas was my favourite, and you can't go wrong with a simple Greek salad). Their cookies and croissants are also very good - I often can't resist picking some up for home. I've also been here a few times for weekend brunch - once during the spring (in the cute back patio) and twice during the winter (once downstairs and once upstairs). The decor is very cute and the atmosphere warm and good for catching up with friends. The last time I went, my friend and I shared an order of the French toast (the apple butter added the perfect touch) and a 3-egg frittata (came hot in a cast iron skillet and what we needed on a cold winter morning). If I remember correctly, they don't take reservations for weekend brunch. The food is always great, but 1 star away from a perfect score due to the mixed service, and the items being quite pricey in both the cafe and on the brunch menu. read more

Everyone, it seems, loves Pan Chancho. For years, it has been a ritual stop for me every time I pass through Kingston. The dazzling array of baked and locally sourced products is both thrilling and overwhelming: breads (sourdough, gluten-free, "homestyle" and many more); the selection of cheeses, many locally produced, which they will let you taste before you buy; the muffins, cookies, croissant, croutons ... it is like a bread museum, but all of the exhibits are freshly made for you to take home. Pan Chancho is a cool space with a hip feel ... they even have Pan Chancho souvenir t-shirts! A year or two ago, this would have been a five-star review. However, I've tried a few other bakeries since then, and there are some trending bread strategies out there that Pan Chancho might want to consider. The bold bake: your bread spends longer in a hotter oven to produce a dark, deeply satisfying crust which has a sweetness that the higher temperatures bring. Now, I don't want to say that they should do this with ALL their breads: maybe just some of them. Clearly, people really enjoy this lovely bakery, just as it is. However, I would have given a five star review if Pan Chancho had produced some breads with a dark crust. On some occasions, but not always, the counter staff can be rather testy and impatient. Pan Chancho actually charges a very fair price for the artisan bread that it produces. However, not everyone recognizes that, and so Pan Chancho might consider hiring consistently up-beat counter staff. read more

The shop has enough of everything; from freshly made pastries, mouth watering deli and sitting down cafe that serves tasty brunch before we hit the road. Ordered stuffed French toast and Smoked Wild Salmon dish; both dishes were excellent! Stuffed French Toast has orange sauce middle serves with black berry and whipped cream, where the Smoked Salmon served with shredded cucumber, fennel cream cheese and rye slides, then ordered side of bacon to wrapped up sweet toast and mild salmon which compliment our brunch nicely. read more

Party of 4 on a busy Saturday afternoon. Smoked meat sandwich was really good. Eggs Bennie was quite tasteless and the salmon was decent. The best compliments were for the mayo that was given for the fries with the meat sandwich lol which says it all. The service wasn't that great, acted kinda like they know they're good so they don't put in that much effort in trying to please the guests. 3 Stars for the dining experience 4 Stars for the bakery and store 3.5 Stars Total Pan Chancho is a representation of the quality that some small town residents love to have when they're away from the choices in a big city. This place has got it all, amazing pastries, pies and cakes, great selection of fresh bread (sourdough to ciabatta, persian flatbread to baguettes, etc,etc) a formidable selection of good cheeses and a tasty array of prepared salads and foods. I can't say much about the dining experience however. Albeit we were a large group of 10 that came it at the end of brunch and were told it would be a long wait - we basically waited almost an hour for a group of 8 to leave even though we saw at least 6 or 7 couples and smaller groups get seated before us. The food sounded great on the menu and looked decent in presentation but ultimately it was lacking that bit of quality that would make this place amazing. The french toast was very normal, the egg plates were simply put together and the flavours were all mellow. Nothing really stood out. I have to say though that the service was great and they know how to accomodate their patrons. While we were getting increasingly aggitated with the waiting, we were offered cookies and as soon as we were seated the staff was aware of our situation and apologetic. Overall a great place with a few missteps but I might find myself back here next time I visit Kingston. read more

Prior to visiting Kingston, I had a lot of Queen's Alumni friends tell me that I *had* to visit this place. SO...I decided I needed to live through that hype. Afterall, there is nothing better on a lazy Sunday morning to have a really really good brunch. Here are reviews of some items we've had: 1) The Weekender Basically, as per the description, The Weekender is "two eggs over easy on a croissant with bacon, chives, and 2 year old cheddar". It really truly sounds like a great combination but their 2 year old cheddar sort of overpowers the flavour of everything else. Don't get me wrong - I love cheese but I also do want to appreciate the flavours of everything else. Overall, it was good but I don't think it's my favourite item on the menu. 2) Red Eye Poutine You really cannot go wrong with poutine of any sort! The Red Eye Poutine is "patates frites, shredded smoked ham, poached egg, cheddar curds and red eye gravy". Really, everything was really good in this poutine...but it probably was an off day because we had an overcooked poached egg. The runny-ness of that perfect poached egg would have added an extra "oomph" factor to that poutine. 3) Wild West Definitely one of my favourites. It is "B.C. smoked wild salmon and fennel cream cheese on light rye cucumbers, red onion and mixed greens with a caper lemon dressing". Basically smoked salmon + cream cheese is the best thing ever created. I love the freshness and crispness of this plate and it's definitely an item I'd order again. Overall, Pan Chancho is one of my favourite go-to places for brunch. It has a nice patio at the back and some cute seating on the top and main level. As for dog friendliness, I believe you have to tie Fido outside of the restaurant as there is no place for you to tie your dog beyond the patio. read more

What a great place! We had breakfast there this morning and were greeted and seated promptly in the outdoor patio. Our coffee and latte were served promptly and were hot and delicious. I ordered the breakfast parfait with a croissant. My companion ordered the fruit & yogurt plate also with a croissant. Both dishes were fresh, delicious, and filling. Our server Mick was friendly and attentive. The front of the shop is filled with pastries, breads, cheeses, prepared salads and many other delicious foods. This is a real gem in Kingston! read more

We stopped by this place for brunch on our road trip to Ottawa. We had read some good reviews on-line. Plus the restaurant has a pig on the front. I have always lived by the philosophy that if there is a pig on the front of the restaurant it is going to be good. I have never been let down... until now. Firstly I have to say that the portion sizes are quite small for the average price per meal. My wife ordered "The weekender" which was basically glorified overpriced croissant breakfast sandwich. I ordered the sweet potato hash. The hash was burnt and the eggs were over poached. I would have told the waitress but nobody ever came around the ask how our meal was. Their saving grace was that the waitress noticed that I had only picked at my meal when she came to take our plates and asked if I didn't like the food and I told her I didn't. She ended up comping the hash. Their OJ was good but the cup was TINY! The coffee was quite decent but not once did we receive a top up. It's not like they were overly busy either. read more

Outstanding Breakfast!! Breakfast & service: Definitely 5 out of 5!! We ate outside with a group of 7 and the weather was beautiful, which always helps... I ordered the BC smoked salmon sandwich, but I asked to have it on a fresh croissant, instead of their rye bread... Home run!!! Fresh, light, beyond delicious!! By far, the best sandwich I have had in the last several months! Pastries, croissants and bread, which we bought as take out: 4 out of 5... Disclaimer: We have spent time in Spain and we were beyond spoiled by having a very small, unbelievably fresh and amazing tasting bakery a couple of blocks from our hotel, which is by far the best I have ever had... Guys, I've been avoiding Pan Chancho's gluten-filled delights ever since I had to go gluten-free, but recently found out they offer a GF pumpernickel bread. I have only four words: It is to DIE FOR. They've managed to make something that tastes good, not heavy and not overly sweet. It looks like real bread, it acts like real bread, and it both slices and freezes like a dream. I would highly recommend it, as I have searched high and low for a good (but occasional) GF treat, and this is it. Service: My wife walked in with a stroller and nobody helped her with the door. She almost walked out the entrance and nobody bothered to tell her she was going the wrong way. When we went back later that day nobody really wanted to help us. Don't get me wrong, I did walk back and forth quite a bit because I was "lost" as to what to buy but in all fairness when I buy I usually buy for my family and friends so it is not uncommon for me to spend more than $100 at a good bakery. Too bad nobody bothered to ask me if I needed help. Decor: Comfortable setting bakery with high ceilings. Food: The food was good and the breads were great. Review: The food was good but the experience wasn't great. I don't think the food is good enough to have poor service. I may drop by to grab something on the go but I won't be going out of my way to get here. I am a firm believer in value but the service just offset the experience for us. So delicious! 3 of us ordered the El Chancho breakfast plate and it was just soooo good! My husband ordered the breakfast pouting and he seriously considered licking out the bowl. We each had a great meal! After we grabbed some dessert to go after! So good! The chocolate almond croissant was so fresh! Really good bakery! Provide various kinds of breads, salads, desserts and pastries. I tried their popular olive& rosemary sourdough and chocolate brioche. Both of them tasted flavorful and fresh.
