Take your time to glance through the selection, it's all pretty fantastic. When you view the pan dulce, you'll see a stack of clean trays and silver tongs for you to pick and choose which pastry you'd like. From there, you head over to the cashier where you'll ring up your items, pick out a drink and enjoy your meal. They also offer a few items for breakfast and lunch that we'll be back for. La Azteca is the best Mexican bakery in the Truckee Meadows. Their assortment of pan dulce is the biggest and best in this area. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. My only criticism is the jalapeño and cream cheese bolillos need more jalapeños and cream cheese. Love the assortment and quality of their pan dulce. read more

Local Mexican bakery located in old Sparks off of Prater. My kids sent me on a mission for conchas; they love the strawberry flavored the most. I went fairly early in the morning and luckily they had all of our favorites in stock. I picked up maybe 10 items total. Pineapple upside down cakes, strawberry filled pastries, and 5 conchas. They offer a full menu from their kitchen and I was tempted to order a torta and tacos. I ran out of time and planned on having tacos for lunch, so I waited. I would like to try them next time. Service was great and the store was quiet! I was the only patron inside and not complaining about that. I prefer quieter places without crowds these days. Decided to try a different panaderia and chose this one since it's close to home. It's was 5pm and they still had a nice selection of bread to choose from. I picked my selection and ordered some tamales to take home and try as well. The pan dulce was fresh, soft and delicious. The tamales were good but for $3 a piece were on the smaller side. I took a chicken, a pork and cheese with jalapeño to try with my husband, and all had a good flavor to them. They also sell tacos, burritos and tortas. I wouldn't mind giving those a try on a future visit. I will definitely come back for more pan dulce. read more

I would love to have this place within a few minutes from my home. Fresh everything, and they poured a fresh to-go of regular drip coffee, for our quick nosh. I'd have tried some lunch items on their menu board, but we did have plans for a big dinner. Grabbed some bolillos filled with jalapenos and cream cheese for a snack. This is a bummer to write. I've frequented the panaderia for a quick bite and extra bonus points as it's a few stores down from my favorite Vietnamese iced coffee. I've enjoyed ordering the carnitas torta but it was an off day. The carnitas in the sandwich were hard pieces of meat and the avocado was a merely two slices and a good amount of it was brownish black (the best part usually). The second star was for the chocolate cupcake as that at least was moist and flavorful. Guess I will be shopping around for a new torta place. read more

We were in the neighborhood & on a mission to find dessert for dinner at a friends house later. We stopped in & found a little convenience store with a variety of bakery items to the side. They provide trays & tongs to grab your own items. They have a great selection, between cookies & pastries, donuts & cakes, and everything in between. We got about 12 items for $20 - which wasn't bad in my opinion. It didn't appear to be the cleanest. They wrapped up our items that had cream on top & it smashed the frosting/decor. It would have been nice to have a box instead of the items being shoved in a bag. It wasn't a nice display for my gathering. read more

Current mood: sad cabbage sandwich. Might not go back there, idk. A cold weekend and foiled tree-cutting expedition left us craving some hearty food, and Azteca was on the way home. It's a cute little bakery, and the pastry case was filled with lovely goodies, but we wanted tortas! I ordered ham & cheese, hubby got carnitas with cheese and avocado. Also ordered a few tamales, and got some flan too. It all looked pretty good. The sandwiches weren't what we expected. There was literally 1 ONE slice of ham on my torta. I put more than 1 slice of ham on my kids' sammiches! Plus, there was a pile of raw cabbage, and a slab of cheese. Hubby's torta had a bit more meat, the same pile of cabbage, a similar slab of cheese and avocado so small, we might have missed it. Overall, just a strange sandwich, nothing like any tortas we've ever had. The flan was delightful, and even tho I steamed the tamales to reheat, they were dry as a bone. Since there was no salsa in the bag, we choked them back without any. Unfortunately, we both had some tummy trouble later on, so I'm not sure the culprit, but we both had it. read more

My friend and her family own both locations. Their sister location in located near Sutro in Reno. Make sure to check hours because I have dropped by early Tuesday and they were closed. Sad day! Came by for bread yesterday and I came at the perfect time! All cases full of Mexican pan dulce! Purchased a load of bread and a tamale. Conchas, niño envuelto, mantecadas, cono rellenos, puerquitos, empanadas and polvorones are a few I can name that I got. I was given a cake box for the amount of bread I purchased. Great place to pick up lunch too, they have many torta options in their menu. When in Sparks this is a must! read more

Called in to order 20 bolillos to pick up the next day. I go in and said I placed an order to pick up the lady in the front goes to the back and comes back and says we have no order for you. We don't take orders unless you come in and pay. Never offered to give me any bolillos. Bad business won't be back. Went to La Esperanza Bakery and they were happy to fill my order no problems. I was on my way to being a regular customer at this mexican bakery establishment and never before had any problem. But today at 10:15 AM 9/2/22, I was severely harassed by one of the workers there. I was keeping to myself, enjoying the pastry I bought, sitting in the corner table they have. I was enjoying my day and taking snapchat videos of the store. Right after filming the store, the clerk with very hoarse voice has the audacity to begin shouting at me across the entire store, repeatedly remarking he can see me on the camera. I ignored him but he literally kept making this remark over and over, "I CAN SEE YOU ON THE CAMERA "HEY I CAN SEE YOU ON THE CAMERA "HEY I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOU" "HEY I CAN SEE YOU ON THE CAMERA" I kid you not, *over, and over*, for several minutes (there were no other customers in the store! It's a small store, I was the only one) and after several minutes of this man shouting at me across the bakery, I replied back so he would be quiet already, I told him I can see him too and he's funny. I laughed and HE MOCKED ME, a customer! He then made a sexist remark asking me "WHERE IS YOUR BOYFRIEND?" I told him he shouldn't alienate his customers, brushed the crumbs off the table and got up. When I got up the gray haired man and a curly haired man were standing behind the register staring right at me, grinning. I ignored them and walked out. I cannot emphasize how much this ruined my day. I didn't do anything to merit this level of harassment. I felt I was treated badly because I am a woman and was alone eating there, and I have long red hair and a dress so the perpetrator felt he could mess with me. I didn't get his name but he sounded like a hoarse old man and had curly hair. I never had any issues with the gray haired man or his wife. This blew my mind. We have had numerous different pastries from here and they are all amazing! Today we had carnitas tortas, Pollo tamales, and chocolate cake. The tortas were good, but we would have preferred to have soft warmed buns. The masa of the tamales was flavorful, but there was little chicken in the middle. The chocolate was delish, super moist! Mmmmm, Pan Dulce, authentic Mexican pastries. I've traveled quite extensively throughout all of Mexico. My parents live there 6 months of the year and were former tour guides for 11 years prior to that. I've had my fair share. These are as authentic tasting as they get. If you aren't familiar with Mexican pastries they aren't like most pastries in the U.S. Lighter, less rich and much less dense. Modern Mexican pastries were influenced by French and Spanish pastries brought over to Mexico later. We stopped this morning for a few treats to take to the Sparks Marina nearby for breakfast. We picked up a couple of Apple empanadas and some other pastries. All were fresh and still warm in the case. Just like most panaderias you need grab a tray and some tongs and choose the pastries you'd like and take them to the counter to pay. We picked up a mandarina orange soda for my boyfriend as well and were out the door. The Service was warm and friendly. We were given a stack of napkins and a smile and we left. They serve tacos and tortas here too but I haven't had a chance to try them yet. I only wish they had homemade tortillas to go too. read more

He got a torta and I got a burrito with carnitas and no joke I've been thinking about that burrito every day since then it's been hard trying to convince myself not to go back every day since then. I freaking love this place! The tortas are reasonable and so so tasty. On my most recent trip the twin ordered a carne asada torta, the friend ordered a burrito the size of her head, and I got a pastry with some sort of sticky custard in the middle. All 3 of us were pleased as punch with our choices. The lady behind the counter was super patient with our indecisiveness and totally helped us decide what to get. I didn't get one on this trip but their churros are BOMBTASTY. The prices are super reasonable too, if you are in the neighborhood it's totally worth stopping. The coconut macaroons are big and just, omg, heaven!! I also enjoy the pumpkin pastry! The steak torta was tasty as well! The prices are decent. Overall, a great place! Four stars mainly for the tasty dough used in the muffins. This is a new Mexican bakery that opened in the same strip of buildings as BJ's Barbecue in Sparks. I tried four things. Two muffins. It turns one both were pecan. One was just bigger than the other. I thought the flavors would be different. Another item was something with a strawberry jelly filling and the fourth thing was something with chocolate dough and chocolate frosting. The muffins were great. I can't tell the flavor. The texture is like corn meal but the lavors were all vanilla.. The dough was perfectly baked and fresh. Yummy. My gripe with some of these panderias is they hold on to the items too long. That wasn't the case here. The dough on the strawberry filled item was good, too. The blig flaw there was the strawberry was obviously some sort of preserve from a jar. Simple, sweet and forgetable The chocolate thing was meh. They also serve sandwiches and coffee. Panderia Los Palomos on Wells Avenue is a bakery that serves sandwiches made from fresh made bread and they're excellent. I suspect Panderia Azteco sandwiches will be good, too. read more

So, I found this excellent Mexican bakery not far from my house, being from Tucson AZ I've come to enjoy the different pastries. The food here is delicious. My only issue is that it seems that if I go in the morning the ladies charge 1$ each for the pastries, but in the afternoon the young man charges $1.25 each for the exact same empanadas etc...the food is very good but get your prices straight. read more
