Now who thought there would be an authentic and delicious purveyor of pan dulce in Kerrville? I certainly didn't, but was very pleasantly surprised at my visit to Panaderia Montoro. Everything I sampled was spot on, better than average and embarrassingly inexpensive. Their traditional American baked goods look tasty, but I was there for pan dulce and passed them by. Thursday's (March 9, 2023) newspaper in Greater Metropolitan Kerrville ran a front-page article about the new bakery in town. Never the one to shy away from anything that's sweet, high in carbs and calories--in short, anything that's bad for me--I ventured over to Panaderia Montoto, 1166 Sidney Baker St. South (where Bandera Highway meets Sidney Baker South--next to Carmine's Italian) and they are on Facebook. Yes, there were donuts (looking far better than any others in town) but I was after pan dulce. I bought five items for a total of $4--cheaper than HEB. At home I forced myself--all for you, Gentle Reader--to sample them. Well, okay, maybe "sampIe" isn't quite the correct word. I ate 'em all, every last crumb--and you'd do the same (you know you would!), so don't judge me! As I expected, they were the "real deal." Americanized versions are sweeter than I've had in Mexico or on the West Side of San Antonio where I was raised. Yes, there is sweetness, but it is muted; this results in the flavors of the ingredients standing out. Needless to say, memories came flooding back! Victor and Rosa Montoto own the bakery and obviously are working hard to produce a totally authentic and delicious product. And before too long, they'll be offering barbacoa and homemade tamales on the weekends. If you live in Kerrville or are just passing through, please drop by and support this new business.
