We wanted to try something new to us and this place had pretty decent reviews, as well as a good menu selection, so decided to give it a try. Our waiter, Ethan, was friendly and attentive and did a great job. He's the only thing I can say that's good here. We started with the Appetizer Combo, which had fried mushrooms, zucchini, pickles, mozzarella sticks, onion rings and marinara and ranch for dipping. The batter was a nice consistency, but lacked seasoning, so very bland. The dips were good. A couple of us had the small appetite plate, with salad, soup and a half a sandwich. We got tomato basil soup and a BLT and added avocado. The salad and sandwich were good. The soup was so salty I couldn't eat it. One person got the catfish plate with green beans and pasta salad. The green beans were canned and mushy. Those same canned green beans were in the pasta salad. The fish was so salty it was inedible. Just overall not a good experience. The place feels old and dingy. What a great restaurant and with a fabulous view to boot. This restaurant sits right on the Guadalupe River and has an open patio to enjoy that view with. We were seated right away. The restaurant is nice, not super new but nice with lots of seating. Our server was efficient and friendly. There were four of us and between us we tried a variety of different foods. We all gave thumbs up for what we had ordered. This is definitely a restaurant to consider giving a try. read more

This is a great restaurant that is on the river. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. They have ample parking but can fill up fast during their peak times. Their menu is extensive and they offer a wide variety of desserts to choose from. There is daily specials which include weekend specials. Prices are reasonable. Most dishes averaged around $14 dollars. The portion size is generous as well. Food was great! Service was good. All the staff were friendly and refilled our teas and waters pretty regularly. 50 minute wait for our food to arrive. 5 plates arrived then and then 10 minutes later the other 4 plates came. My wife had to change her order to go during the 50 minute wait and she had to go to work before her food arrived to she did not get anything. No rolls were ever offered despite other tables on the same room for some. No ketchup offered despite multiple orders of fries and onion rings. Billie Jean is still one of our favorite places to have a late lunch or early dinner. The food is always consistent, something I like very much. You can't find better service than any of the staff that take your order. The battered fish plate is excellent. The ground meat plate is also excellent. On both you have your choice of two sides which works out very well. To be truthful neither my wife and I could finish up the flight we ordered so we took the rest home. The atmosphere here overlooking the Guadalupe river is stunning. It is also very sad as we remember the floods of July for 2025. One thing I love about restaurants that have background music that is actually background music the ability to have private conversations. If you're in the Kerrville Texas area I would highly recommend visiting Billy Gene, even if it's for the desserts as you will see in the photos I've attached. read more

We go when we come to Kerrville. My husband always orders the pork chop, which is a large piece or meat, grilled perfectly. His sides were the sweet potato casserole which was wonderful! The grilled veggies were from fresh produce, not frozen. I had the "lite dinner" but was filling. It was a side salad, cup of soup & 1/2 sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich was on a buttery croissant & was good. Again, fresh veggies were pursed to make the soup, definitely not canned. The salad was crisp. We had not been to Billy Gene's for years although we frequented them in Bandera before they moved. We now live in Boerne. It was a big disappointment! TB was the server, ticket time 1:43, table C6, check 111. Service was very slow although our waiter was nice but....had a few too many Texas zingers going on. It took 45 mins to get our food. Some of us hadn't eaten yet and we were having to ask for rolls that are usually brought out automatically. The "DUDE RANCH CHICKEN-This is a grilled fresh chicken breast we top with sautéed mushrooms, onions & melted Swiss cheese". The chicken was so thin & tough that I stopped eating it and was saving it for the dog (decided against that today). My potato & fried okra was the only saving grace. I was told the Chicken fried steak was also chewy and barely seasoned. The hamburger special was very dry and just okay. The cod was dripping grease and had too much batter. Our 11 yr old granddaughter was served a baked potato that was rotting from the inside out and you could see the black spots from the outside. The staff had to have seen it and still sent it out to eat. We didn't notice until we got out the leftovers, out of the foil, and saw what she had been eating on. I think the corndogs looked like the best thing to the youngest child there. This is a place we will never go back to ever again. It was not worth $151 (w/tip) for 6 of us with only 2 deserts. We decided at that time to be like a Mystery Diner and make sure we posted it for others to see. I booked the party room the first week in May for a family reunion lunch. The assistant manager was very nice & took the reservation. I called & confirmed about 5 days before we met & told her the number of people attending. My husband & I showed up & I noticed 3 smaller tables set up by the window overlooking the river. When I asked about that to one of the waitresses, she said it's for our overflow....when customers come in and the restaurant is full we put them in here. I told her I had booked this room for a private event three weeks in advance. She went and got the manager... which had a horrible attitude and said we never reserve this room on Sunday for a private event. My hands were tied. A large group (12) came in shortly after that & were seated. My cousin was trying to get our families's attention to just do a few trivia points before we said the blessing and ordered our meal. We couldn't hear anything due to the other large group talking. When my cousin said the prayer before we ordered... again we couldn't hear him due to the other group talking. Beware of subpar takeout orders, I've been disappointed a couple of times before. Today I arrived to pick up my order from "Jake", even though it was a takeout order I tipped $8.00 and started home. I reached my subdivision, about that time I got a call from a lady from Billy Gene's telling me that my deserts weren't put in my bag with the rest of my order! I returned to Billy G's and retrieved my order, Jake stood there but didn't greet me or say anything, the manager retrieved my deserts and I asked her to remove my tip $8 from my order for poor service. Jake stood there aloof, disengaged and didn't offer an apology. I remarked to him when I was leaving that the bust was on him and he needed to learn how to apologize. He stood there uncaring and unfazed. No more take out from BJ's for my family! read more

We found Billy Gene's when in Mountain Town, TX for a wedding. This place is AMAZING!!! This resteraunt consistently had a full parking lot and was located right on the river, with a covered dog friendly patio so we had to check it out. Ask for Timothy B, he was our server! Tim was friendly, attentive and very helpful in our efforts to pick selections from a well stocked menu! We LOVED this place and will absolutely plan to return the next time we are near Kerrville. Highly recommend the chicken fried steak, onion rings, strawberry cake, and Texan Salad!! The view is beautiful from the porch/deck, and the waitstaff is usually wonderful, however, some of management and cooks can be a very off-putting towards the waitstaff. Every single time I have gotten a salad, it has been extremely gritty with dirt. The food is a little underwhelming and seems reheated rather than homemade - or just overcooked. Some of the apps aren't bad. Unfortunately, I've just heard too many first-hand accounts of food prep issues/shortcuts to eat here again. read more

This was quite a diner I visited with my family this past weekend. Everyone we spoke with, including our waitress, was very nice and attentive. The place was very clean and well kept. We were able to be seated fairly quickly, and right outside the window, we can see a very nice view of the river. If it wasn't so hot, I would have sat outside for sure. But being inside was nice as well. The food itself wasn't disappointing. I think the only things I ate and didn't care for were the rolls and my soda. The fried pickles were great, and the onion rings were huge and crunchy. I especially loved my fries as they tasted fresh. The burger was good, but I really like the bun it came on. Some family members ordered salad, and they were huge. Definitely didn't feel ripped off on the size portion. Everything came out great and not much complaint from the family. If I were to come back to Kerrville soon, I wouldn't mind stopping by here to try their desserts next time. This place I would recommend to my family and friends. read more

UPDATE January 2026: Another excellent meal, again I had the hamburger steak dinner with ice (sweet) tea and a heavenly chocolate cake. The cake was delicious and seemed to be strips of chocolate cake surrounded by chocolate icing. Truly a treat deserving of the classic "Death by Chocolate" label. Had a great Dinner by the Guadalupe River. Menu had plenty of variety kid friendly also. While in Kerrville why not dine by the river. We started off with the sampler appetizers which was a meal in itself onion rings, zucchini, mushrooms, cheese sticks,& pickles all fried & hand battered I decided to go with Chicken Fried Steak, Cole slaw, and fruit cup. Diana had the grilled shrimp which she wasted no time on. We finished the meal with banana pudding. That was more than enough for us to have to make decisions on what we would carry home which was just a few appetizers. What a enjoyable meal place was busy but not crowded, wait staff was amazing, service was attentive and pleasant throughout the meal. Chicken tenders looked fresh, but the chicken fried steak was okay (hard to tell if it was fresh). Sides were meager (French fries and mashed potatoes). Roasted veggies were okay too. 2. Rolls were stale and had been sitting out. Tasteless and just not very good. 3. Kid ordered a cheeseburger and the bun for it was another tasteless roll. That's poor quality and easy to overcome. We came here on the recommendation from resort concierge. After this experience I didn't trust their recommendations for dining. There is a lot of room for improvement with the food. read more

In the heart of Kerrville overlooking the River. Both indoor and outdoor seating, I think pets are welcome if you choose to sit outside. Very spacious interior and lots of parking. Prices were quite reasonable. Ordered the surf and turf meals for both hubby and I, each with different sides and a sampler platter of fried veggies and mozzarella sticks. Batter on veggies was crisp but a bit too thick and some pieces retained a lot of oil. Steaks were cooked to liking but didn't have the chargrilled sear and taste we are accustomed too. It was more of a 'steam' grilled flavor. The lemon pepper seasoning atop was overly too much on both our steaks. The veggies were very overcooked and mushy, didn't enjoy that at all. The potato sides were fine, both sweet mashed and baked. The shrimp were large as but also steamed with a lot of that lemon pepper seasoning atop. Seems like that's the seasoning of choice. Ambiance was top notch and service was quick and friendly. In my opinion, steakhouses need to truly 'grill' their food on open flame. I did not see the kitchen but truly didn't feel steaks were grilled. read more
