The idea behind this small restaurant chain goes back to the late 1950's when some Aussies went on a road trip across the US of A. They noticed the popularity of pancakes on the menus in American restaurants and wanted to bring that love of pancakes to Australia. They opened their first restaurant in Adelaide in 1965 and then opened around Victoria. The original founders separated with one moving to Sydney and opening Pancakes On The Rocks. Since that time, the chain shrunk, revived, and then added to the menu. We came here for a late breakfast or early lunch with our Australian friends, who had fond memories in their youth of this small chain. In fact, one mentioned getting kicked out of a location many years ago. Fortunately for her, the statute of limitations has run out and there is no "banned" list in existence. :) Among the crowded dining room, we managed to snag a nice big booth, and settled in. Our friends wasted no time heading to the pancake part of the menu and ordering sweet selections that I'm sure would max out my A1C number. Their portions were huge and they dug right in. Gayle and I were boring, and each ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad, which were quite good and plentiful. And yes, beer and wine go with salad and pancakes! This restaurant was highly suggested by my Airbnb host. Located near the wharf and easily accessible to get to on foot. The restaurant is very clean with a minimalist decor. The host seats you and you can order using the QR code or at the podium. The pancakes were very delicious but, the bacon reminded me more of ham but tasted like bacon. It wasn't cooked hard like I would prefer. The eggs were good I added salt and pepper for flavoring. The hash brown was okay lacked taste so I had to request ketchup and was my least favorite. This place was recommended in a travel guide book and located in a cute part of Sydney (the rocks) but I really feel like it's not worth it. I'm a huge fan of pancakes but I thought it was weird that the pancakes dishes had ice cream on them. Not bad if you're eating at night but I just can't have ice cream with my breakfast. I ordered a traditional breakfast and it wasn't anything special. There's no actual menu and you have to order and pay through a QR code so make sure you have cell service and a credit card ready. It's been a while since I've been here, but when I was living in Sydney, it was one of my go-to places for weekend brunch. Location is super convenient no matter where you are coming from. Staff is super sweet and attentive. Food is always incredibly fresh. Hilariously enough, my favorite thing on their menu was the chicken Caesar salad, which yes I ordered for breakfast or brunch. don't even know where to begin with Pancakes on the Rocks--it was simply amazing! My husband and I visited during the week for breakfast, and we were blown away by the delicious food. The pancakes were hands down the best I've ever had, but what surprised us most was the variety on the menu. There's truly something for everyone here. As for the ambience, casual and comfortable environment with plenty of seating. While it wasn't too busy when we visited during the week, I can imagine this place being packed on the weekends, especially mid-morning. So, if you're planning a visit, keep that in mind and maybe aim for an off-peak time. However, even if you do have to wait, I assure you it will be worth it. The customer service was exceptional. Our waiter was not only attentive and friendly but also took the time to share his insights about the area and give us some tips for our trip. His hospitality added to the overall wonderful experience. If we ever find ourselves back in this area, there's no doubt we'll be visiting Pancakes on the Rocks again. The food came out fast and the cleaning crew was on point. My server had an attitude when I requested tap water with lemon. She asked me multiple times if I was sure I wanted tap water. It was so much that I asked her if the water was safe to drink. She said yes and proceeded to ask again. When I replied yes with lemon, she said I will get you tap water like it was an insult. Let me tell you she did not bring my tap water, I received my food and had to ask the man who brought it to grab me a water. When I finally received my water it came in a kiddie cup. And there were so many flavors to choose from--all with different ice creams, toppings, syrups, and creams. I had a chicken schnitzel and I had to get the server because it wasn't cook in the middle but the server was very nice and went back and got whole new schnitzel cook for me and even more chips cook for as I already finish them before I got to eating the schnitzel. I don't recommend the pancakes as they can be very sweet or not even sweet at all and very dry but I guess it just depends on the day you go but the wedges are the best do recommend them. It's either there's really an appetite for pancakes or there aren't a lot of places in Australia that serve pancakes... Because in North America, it is very common and in comparison, Pancakes here are very mediocre and overpriced. Service was pushy and unfriendly. They were in a rush to make us place our orders. During one seating, our table had been asked 5 times if we could place our order. Seriously, what was the rush? We just sat down not long ago! And when we asked for the bill, it took forever to arrive. The menu is extensive, I'll tell you that. Because they would have not survive with their pancakes alone. Everything had to be ordered online (including tap water) and any drink refills (not free). The Hollandaise for my egg Benedict was cold (like out of the refrigerator cold). What really was annoying was we asked for a take away container for uneaten food and were told there was a service charge. Between the two of us, we split a stack of BBQ Pork Ribs ($35.95), the Fisherman's Catch ($21.95) and a plate of Black Forest Cherry Pancakes for dessert ($12.95). The ribs were huge and very tasty for Australian quality meat! I was impressed with how much they had given us, but I'm glad since it was a bit pricier than usual. Our fried fish was pretty good as well, but nothing to write home about. Pancakes however were sweet, fluffy, and instantly gratifying. I don't think we even finished eating them! Food here is great. Service is good but it was hard to flag down a server to get refills of tap water. Don't forget to ask for ice if you like it cold. When I first moved here I learned that "Australian" pancakes were more like crepes - thin but equally yummy. So when my cousin said there was a great pancake place near her that had real American style thick proper pancakes, I knew we had to go. The wait can be an issue depending on when you go, but it goes pretty quick. My cousin and I split the Aussie Sunrise which was two buttermilk pancakes, bacon, fried egg, pineapple and grilled banana. At the time, bananas were $16 per kilo, so that was already a score. Everything was really tasty and filling. We also shared a sweet pancake for dessert - the Devil's Delight - chocolate pancakes with strawberries, drizzled with chocolate sauce and ice cream - OMG so rich but so delicious. On another visit I tried the banana pancakes which were also yummy. Don't think you can really go wrong with any pancakes there. Really liked this place. Had a bit of trouble finding it at first, but once I got settled in and ordered, I quite liked it. I had the banana pancakes, and they were delicious. Bordering on too sweet, I shoved the ice cream that came with it off to the side and that was what saved them. The pancakes themselves were fluffy delicious. I do, however, much prefer banana pancakes to have the bananas inside the batter instead of just on the side, but I overcame that dreadful obstacle and enjoyed them as they were made. Hungry after walking around looking at VIVID installations in the blistering cold, the GF and I seeked out carby relief in any heated place. Pancakes on the Rocks. She'd been there, and LIKED IT, would you believe. I wrangled my disdain and prejudice (tourists...) back in control at the behest of the missus as we lined up. Didn't take long to be ushered to a table downstairs. I got the pancakes and sausages, she got the banana kind. I look around. Tourists everywhere. The pair seated next to us are on a first date or something. Service is nice and prompt. As I wait, I try not to eavesdrop on the 101 first date getting-to-know-you questions from the couple. Not very successfully! The girl doesn't like strawberries apparently. The guy agrees they're not his fav either. The food comes. Pancakes are nice and satisfying. The sausages are the 24-pack woolies kind. Not bad. Grilled tomatoes always welcome. Eggs were unseasoned, but the salt's on the table. Whipped butter is meh.
