Kung Pao Chicken with Brown Rice & Spring Rolls
    John S.

It is fast food Chinese, however it is pretty good. On my most recent visit I had the Beijing Beef and Orange Chicken Plate with Fried Rice and Vegetable Spring Rolls. I asked to taste the Beijing Beef since it was listed as spicy before ordering and found it to be just the right level of heat to my taste. The spring rolls were crispy on the outside without being too done. The serving size was plenty for lunch.

Chicken with mushroom, Beijing beef and raw white rice/raw fried rice. Thankfully, I did not get cracked teeth.

Are they cooking rice at local kitchen or just serve cooked one at store? I ordered plate with half & half of fried and white rice. Both were still raw "uncooked" means most of rice were harder than "al dente", like "grain". Surprisingly, fried rice was looking fried and tasted but rice are almost raw. Is there anyone who can teach cooking rice? It is not so difficult.

This was my second visit for lunch. I don't know why other yelp folks give poor reviews. The staff were very nice and helpful with my hard of hearing with that HUGE exhaust system they use. The menu was plentiful and was fresh looking and tasting. I arrive just before noon and by 12:30 I was done with my meal and the dining area was about 25% full but a line to order was getting long and to go pick up were plentiful. I enjoy my meal. The bathroom, soda area and tables in the dining area spotless. I will say the dining room was chilly to sit and eat.

First let me say how much I love this restaurant. When I walked in the atmosphere was so inviting. It was quiet and calm with only a couple of people inside so it wasn't stressfully busy. It's so clean and neat inside as well. When I went to order, the staff were friendly and helpful and made sure my order was correct. I ordered the plate (it comes with 2 entrees and 1 side) and I got the Orange Chicken, the Honey Sesame Chicken, and the Chow Mein as my side. The food here is so delicious and fresh that it doesn't leave me feeling gross when I leave! Also for the price of the plate, the portions are amazing so you truly get what you pay for! All in all, if you want some good, fresh, and affordable food. This is the place!

Ordered the Mongolian beef, Kung Pao chicken, had noodles and half rice and my goodness everything is terrrible! I only gave 2 stars because the girl at the drive thru window was super nice. The noodles were flat and so bland. The beef had so much sauce on it it overpowered everything and the chicken tasted straight like peanuts-nothing else. This was my second attempt at this location and I was not pleased the first time either. So I won't be back. Edited to add that I don't know how to DM a business. But no thank you anyway.

I've never been a fan of orange chicken until I started coming here. It is so delicious!! I usually just get it with white rice. Their chicken and spring egg rolls are also equally delicious. Their chicken teriyaki is also divine.

Yeah, no self-respecting foodie would be caught reviewing a fast food, Chinese chain restaurant. And especially not someone who loves the finer points of Szechuan, Cantonese, and Hunan cooking styles. Well, sometimes you are in the mood for Chinese food, and fast and convenient are important. The Panda bear to the rescue. This Panda Express is a stand-alone building that is new and is aesthetically pleasing. I would encourage you to try with an open mind and realistic expectations. I studied the menu carefully, and settled on two item lunch. Fried rice, Pacific Chili Shrimp, and Green Beans with Chicken. In context, I thought my lunch was actually pretty good.

Checked out the ole Panda today with my foodie buddy Paul. He beat me to it so I'm the 2nd to review. We both love Asian food and we both came here with an open mind. It was quite busy at lunch time on a hump day, but that's the best thing about these places. It's FAST! It takes longer for you to pay than it is to get your food because most everything is already cooked and sitting under the warming lamps. This is a brand new location on the corner of Lorna and Hwy 31 by the Galleria. The area is a booming with new construction and is being "revitalized" with a recent opening of Walgreens and Steak and Shake on either side. There is also a Whole Foods opening soon in the same parking lot. The exterior is beautiful with a surprisingly contemporary interior. There were clean booths, table, chairs and even tables with handicap access. Also worth mentioning are the bathrooms. I can't speak about the women's but the men's bathroom was spotless! Think mall food court but much nicer and with a nice restaurant type interior with a self serve soda machine and you have this Panda Express. Oh I forgot, they have a drive-thru! Now that's convenient. I haven't tried it so I can't attest to the wait times, but if the food is already prepared and you just choose from the list, surely it shouldn't take that long. Their menu is simple and their pitch is that you can create any combo you wish. They have a kids meals for $5. You have option of Bowl (1 entree & 1 side) $5.90, Plate (2 entreess & 1 side) $6.90 or Bigger Plate (3 entress & 1 side) $8.40. Your choice of sides are chow mein, fried rice, mixed veg, white or brown steam rice. I ordered the Bigger plate with their new Pacific shrimp, string bean chick breast, black pepper chicken with fried rice. They give you a healthy portion of fried rice. The shrimp was quite flavorful with large pieces of snap peas and bell pepper. The string bean chick breast was also flavorful and spicy. The string beans might've been a little over cooked sitting under the hot lamps but tasted delicious. The black pepper chicken was my favorite. It had generous pieces of white onions, celery and of course black pepper. Paul also got the shrimp and string bean chicken and he enjoyed his meal as well. My daughter tried the brocolli beef. She said "it tastes like beef and brocolli". I had a good time. This Panda Express certainly took the image of mall fast food out of my head because this location was a refreshing change. If the food we were served had been made fresh after we placed an order, I would've given this place an extra star. The food tasted as good as I would expect and the atmosphere was enjoyable despite the bustling afternoon lunch crowd. I'll try the drive thru next time.

I arrived at the Hoover location at 11AM which is time this restaurant is scheduled to open. There was absolutely NO FOOD READY on the Hot Bar and along with myself and several other people we had to wait 30 minutes for our food to be cooked. When I asked who was the manager, the cashier said she wasn't sure. No one apologized for the delay and no one asked if we wanted courtesy drinks. They really need to improve their customer service skills. I gave it two stars because the food is good but they could use a major lesson in time management and customer satisfaction. After paying for my selections, I asked for a courtesy drink & received a small Mountain Dew. I would recommend this location but if you don't want to wait for your food to be cooked, try arriving at 11:30 AM instead of 11:00 AM.

This place is a little too nice and clean to just be called a fast food restaurant, but the food is hot and ready when you walk in. The staff is all super friendly here, though I did have to get the cashier's attention more than once at the checkout. They have pretty simple menu options so even the fussiest eaters can choose something they like and order it every time they return. We all know someone like that LOL!

    Chicken egg roll (toasted)
    Alfreda B.

Very disappointed that my chicken egg roll was overcooked and cold. This was the only item that was ordered, since I was craving an egg roll. I enjoy crispy egg rolls but not burnt egg rolls. This batch should have went in the trash. I gave 3 stars because the server was friendly and fast.

Roomy patio dining. (Dog not included)

All the vegetables were way undercooked. The shrimp tasted fine but everything else was hard to eat. Paid $8 for 5 shrimp basically.

Dish #1: Xiaolongbao, XLB, or as Mr. Chen's calls it: A5. Small steamed bun (pork with vegetable) I love these things. Sweet, juicy, soupy, I just wish they came with black vinegar sauce as their sauce is sweeter than I expect. Dish #2: A4. Pan-Fried dumpling (chicken with vegetable). We exclusively get them pan fried not steamed, the pan fried in my son's opinion are eye-rolling good while he will not even touch the steamed ones. I get these everytime since he is addicted to them and asks for them once a week. Dish #3: Cumin Lamb. I love lamb, but even if you are not a fan of gamey flavors, you may still enjoy this dish. The meat is sweet and flavorful with very little game. This has become a frequent purchase. Dish #4: SP.2 Boiled fish in szechuan special pepper. My wife loves this dish due to the peppercorn numbing effects. I love this dish for the flavor of the fish. I only wish this was spicy with a thick layer of hot pepper oil ontop, but my wife perfers it exactly as it comes. P.S. If you get this delivered, be careful, although they bag it twice, there is likely a lot of soup that has spilled into the inner bag. Dish #5: SP. 3 Boiled fish in hot oil. So due to the lack of spice I desired in Dish 4, I tried the fish in hot oil. I really enjoyed this dish, however there is less broth and they did not keep the peppercorns. Someday in the future I will probably end up mixing SP 2 and SP 3 getting the hot spicy oil I want with the peppercorn numbing. I do not know why they do not have both in one dish. Will make another post about that if it goes well. Dish #6: SP. 9. Hot & Numbing style tofu. This mapo tofu is pretty good! I enjoy the spice, though I feel like it should be even spicier. It is always a toss between this or the lamb. Overall Mr. Chen will remain my local dealer of spicy Chinese food and dumplings.

My moo goo gai pan had barely any chicken in it. There were huge chunks of vegetables and it was way too starchy. It was like they were trying to compensate for the lack of protein in it. I haven't ordered from them this year, but I did tonight. Listen the economy is rough for everyone but I paid $15 for this chicken and they used maybe 1/8 of a chicken breast in it. Not cool. Hate to leave the negative review, but I need to warn people that they're using filler food to complete the orders and charging more. What's not cool anywhere these days is paying more and getting way less than just a few years ago. All of us are working hard to earn money and it just feels so disappointing to not get what you pay for, especially when you're paying more than you used to. I don't know who to blame for this. If I wanted a carton of vegetables I would have eaten a frozen bag for $2.50 tonight.

We got so many things to start with Coconut water rice cake. Yes it does have the consistency of a sponge cake. It was good! I also got some Panda red bean buns. Cute and also good! For drinks: Sake, Taro bubble milk tea, and a Thai milk tea. We tried Winter Melon and clam soup For my entree I got Chicken with Lotus root which I enjoyed, My husband got crispy intestine . (My husband said he has never had it done that well-clean taste ) I tried it and it was ok. My son got the Szechuan style sautéed brisket and he ate it up ! To go yep we got sautéed pork belly and eggplant, pork, & basil . Both were also good. The waiter worked his bum off and we gave him a good tip. The only complaint were the young boys working up front who weren't friendly and acted like working was killing them. Why I didn't give you a 5! Otherwise you would have deserved it !!! All the food was delicious! Now on to the market - I like this better than the hometown market why they have many things I haven't seen including Jin noodles I have been looking everywhere for!!!! We bought many things to try including cucumber, orange, and what I thought was Mango potato chips. Nope it was abalone ! Not so good but the orange was good Of course Jin noodles , tiramisu mochi, banana milk rice snacks(yum) , tamarind drink, orange pepper spice, and chili crisp Our cashier though was joyless . Another excellent addition your list of Thai restaurants in Birmingham!…read more They've only been there for 6 years and I finally made it. Even though I didn't dine in, I appreciated the beautiful decor and the attention to detail. Gone from their early days during the pandemic when they were take out only to their newly renovated and larger dining area. There's nice bar with stools nearly centered in the restaurant. Employees are more friendly than you can imagine. Located on 280 near the Greystone entrance, YYST is on the right in a small quaint strip shopping area that's raised "above" 280. So if you're driving by you can see YYST by looking up. There's no outdoor seating, but plenty of tables and chairs inside with seating at the bar. They are quite proud of their Yelpies 2025 award for "Beloved Birmingham Business" which sits at the front entrance. Their menu is comprehensive with the right amount of dishes to satisfy. Every "Thai" place seems to have their own take on most dishes and YYST is no different. Their "recommended" entrees include Mango fish, Pad Thai Chakangrao, Massamun Short Rib, Pad Thai Wings and Panang New York Strip. Then they also have "Signature Plates" whose menu descriptions had my mouth watering. There's also stir fry, curries, salads, and even a lunch menu. Since I wasn't dining, I was going to do my litmus test and try their version they call Beef Drunken Uncle noodle. I also ordered their Fresh Basil Shrimp Rolls, and Bangkok market fried rice. I waited at the bar for about 10 minutes when my packaged meals arrived. I was offered a glass of cool water as I waited at the bar. The rolls were wrapped in saran wrap and I would guess were probably made a couple of days ago. Nothing wrong with that except I got unlucky and rice paper wrapper was almost crunchy. They were a little heavy on the use of lettuce, but each had 4 large fresh shrimp. The taste wasn't anything spectacular BUT their version of the dipping peanut sauce saved it. Yom Yom Yom! The fried rice was delicious. Tossed in a wok with eggs, onions, chinese broccoli and their house sauce, I had beef added as the protein and it was delicious. My Drunken noodle was very good! This traditional street food inspired dish is a classic. Wide noodles tossed with snap beans, garlic, onions, bell peppers with thai chili and basil, their version is quite good! It had great flavor and an excellent representation of the drunken noodle. Next time I might have to pay extra for a fried egg on top. Yom Yom Yom Yom! I'm glad I finally visited YYST. I am looking forward to returning and this time dining in. The Panang New York Strip and Mango Fish have my name on them!
