A little taste of hipster brooklyn in Sarasota! Pangea bar manages to both stick out while also being completely hidden in the bougie downtown area of Sarasota. When you visit this part of town, you'll notice a bunch of high end tiki bars with snow bird retirees and then some more would be dive bars playing the UFC match for the bridge and tunnel crowd. Then, tucked away in a dark alleyway is Pangea Alchemy Lab. On google maps it looks like it's down an alley way, because it is. After walking though a small hall/doorway past the bar's bathroom, you enter in the bar... The place is designed like a science lab with beakers and flasks for serving alcohol. It has a tragically hip vibe to it, while also not being too pretentious to bear. There are so many amazing drink options. My favorite was the vanilla chai. The lychee is super sweet and tastes like a liquid life saver. They also have something called a "gas mask" shot that will get you automatically cut off for an hour or so because of how strong it is. There's fire involved with that one, so buyer beware. They are reasonably priced. My friend and I stayed here all night until 1am and as we were walking back to our car, passing all the other watering holes we had to choose from, we knew we made the right choice. read more

The place has one thing going for it. The drinks. The ambiance is lacking, old grubby decor, I'll tempered bartenders. Our waiter was trying to keep up but bless his heart, he couldn't and honestly it makes no sense with a place this small thing by it takes so long to get a drink. Won't be back. Update the decor, make lighting dimmer, play some damn music that you don't have to strain to hear. read more

This is a funky little spot where you enter off the back alley behind Main St. That alone isn't all that swift to be honest. Inside it's kinda dark with its own little vibe. Don't know if I'll go back, even with my 4 star review as it's not really my kind of spot. Cocktails were good and service was very friendly but it's a bit of a different spot for Sarasota if you will. I had the Sazerac which was a bit diluted but pretty good. read more

Mixed feelings on this bar! The positives: the cocktails are all really unique. I got the "Chai" which consisted of vanilla lavender vodka, spiced chai, cream, and cinnamon. I had it as an after dinner drink and it was perfect for that. It was creamy, smooth, and full of flavor. Essentially a spiked chai latte! My husband got the "Sir Sazerac" which was made of earl grey infused bourbon, absinth rinse, Demerara syrup, orange bitters with a maple syrup ice cube. He really enjoyed it! The not-so-positives: the smell! While I understand they are going for a speakeasy vibe, you have to enter through an alley and then the first half of the bar smells like an alley! The smell almost caused us to leave, but since it was empty we went to the total opposite end of the bar. It was a weeknight when we went but it was dead, the lights were turned on too high, and the music was too soft. I can see what vibe they were going for based on their decor, but it was not executed successfully. It was kind of uncomfortable to us. We only stayed for one drink and then wanted to head somewhere else a little more lively. Overall, worth checking out for a drink. Probably best to go on a weekend. read more

Have been here 2 times in our 2 trips to Sarasota this year and will go at least once more before we leave. So be prepared to get the full speakeasy vibe, the entrance is in an alley with garage bins and the entrance hall gives one pause. The interior tries hard to give that old world vibe, probably too much. Now the important part, the cocktails were outstanding. From the taste to presentation all were 1st rate. I've been slacking on writing lately, but this place deserves a stellar review. DRINKS: The cocktails here are inventive, tasty, and (somehow) CHEAP. Seriously. The bartenders develop signature drinks with some even gaining national recognition. I personally expected to pay a lot more for what I received, but your average cocktail here will only run you between $10-$12. SERVICE: Our bartender was wonderful! She allowed me to try a shot of fernet before ordering a drink with it and later brought some lychee to taste before serving a different drink. Overall, she was super, super kind and attentive! ATMOSPHERE: Walking into Pangea feels like stepping into a lounge in Berlin. Definitely expect European vibes. Who knew Sarasota had a speakeasy? I wanted to go to 5 stars, but I'm not because they seem confused. Its supposed to be a speakeasy, with really complex drinks served in a "hidden" location. The front of the shop - on main street - is a sandwich shop. If I recall, the lounge used to extend all the way to the street, but it looks like they changed that. Once we found our way inside, it seems like you can get in through the sandwich shop (because people came in from the front), but the entrance to the speakeasy is through the alley in the back. That confused the heck out of us since we walked to the address on main street, and it wasn't there. But some research on yelp and we found out we had to go around. Anyway, it is very nice inside, but its a lounge, not a speakeasy. It's a modern day, modern set-up lounge with plush couches and a set up like you'd expect. I've been to a couple of speakeasies - New York and Atlanta - and they all have the hidden entrance, but the others were set up like you'd expect from a 1920's speakeasy. It may sound strange that I would deduct a star from a place I really liked, but if you're going to be a speakeasy, set yourself up like one. Don't mix and match styles. I'd probably still give it 5 starts though if it wasn't for the complete lack of a dress code. I know this is Florida, especially Sarasota, and you're going to hurt your business if you don't allow shorts or flip flops. I get it, but I still have a problem with it. Whether you're a speakeasy, or a modern lounge with just really fancy drinks, a place like this should have a dress code. Anyway, onto the good stuff - the drinks are fantastic. I couldn't even tell you what we got, but mine was called a WT something, which stood for white trash, so it was served in a red solo cup with a small piece of a fried bologna sandwich as a garnish. I know - not very speakeasy-ish - but it made us laugh and the drink was fantastic. The drink menu was filled with complex but delicious looking drinks, Service was fantastic. The one cocktail server they had knew a lot and was on her game. It was slow, which probably helped, but she was still excellent. So really, this is a 5 star gin-joint. I'm just picky. read more

Sarasota, you are very lucky to have this bar in your city. A place like this would require a 3-hour minimum wait on weekends in NYC. The drinks are beyond signature cocktails most bars or restaurants feature on their menus. Thought went into each drink to create a unique concoction and flavorful experience. My very favorite is one with mango ice cubes, sprite and vodka. The most recent menu has a Blue Mule with blueberry ice cubes. I could list the menu, but it's constantly changing and there's too many to recall. The storefront is similar to a speakeasy that serves sandwiches, but go behind the curtain to find the lounge. They have cozy booths and play down tempo music for the most part. A light snacking menu is offered as well. read more

The drinks are out of this world fantastic. Flavor fusion to the max. Brad the bartender is nothing short of a genius. I have been in many a time for a cocktail or two before hitting the dance floor. Each drink is exactly the same every time. These drinks are hand crafted, measured and you can literally see the love being poured into each one. I just saw that my last review on this place was in 2012 (7 years ago). Update: I still love this place after all of these years! I've seen them go through different renovations, interior decor and some staff change. With each change, they've gotten better and better. Although, i selfishly do miss the days when not many people knew about them lol because i didn't have to wait long for my food/cocktail. But alas, i am happy for their success. The food is absolutely delicious and can be ordered late-night after your bar-hopping adventures. And the cocktails never disappoint. You don't have to order drinks from the menu. You can order whatever your heart desires and the experienced mixologists will make that or something comparable. read more

This was an overall good experience, with a few caveats. Let's start with the drinks - they were wonderful. The options were unique, well executed, and tasted great. Where the experienced faltered a bit, however, was in the atmosphere. Yes, this is a backdoor-entry, speakeasy type place, but should I really be getting occasional wafts of sewage? Nothing ruins a sip of a good old fashioned more than the smell of sewage half way through the drink. It was a cool place with great drinks, but I don't think cleaning some of the cushions or making the place a bit more put together would have ruined the hipster vibe that it's going for. I called because we were having trouble finding it the guy that answered the night of 8/31 was a total dbag and was so rude " there's only one door so if your at the door you're here" " yeah we're open..I'm talking on the phone with you aren't I?" LOL okay asshole screw you from one hospitality worker to the next that is not a way to get people in the door to spend money to tip you to be able to make a living... we took our business to a different spot down the street and had a great time ran up a nice tab and took well care of the people who took care of us. Unfortunately can't give it 5 or 1 star. There was a wait and we had to go on list. While standing waiting to go in, a woman came out for a smoke. We started talking to her about the area and place. She mentioned the place was cool, but a little odd and smelled. I think between waiting in the alley with the smell from there and the woman saying it smelled inside, my wife wanted to pass on waiting and trying it out. We've been to Ciros a speakeasy in Tampa, this one looked a bit more of a bar than a trendy speakeasy. And I'm sure that's fine for the customers they want to bring in. Pangea has great cocktails even if they do get made with lesser quality booze. (This doesn't mean much, who really wants to ruin a high end bourbon in a mixed drink??) The bartenders were pretty friendly and made very well constructed drinks. Reasonably priced for the time that has to be spent per drink as well. The atmosphere is pretty good inside. Not to outlandish that you feel like you have to shout and not to conservative that you feel like you can't have a good conversation. read more

It's been a little time since I've been here but I really enjoyed it here! It's a great place to unwind and have casual convo with friends. It's a great laidback kind of vibe with dim lighting but enough that you can talk for some time while sipping on your drinks. I forgot the name of the drink I got but it came with a popsicle and I'd absolutely recommend as it's an interesting blend! They also have cereal combos and were willing to accommodate the fact that I was lactose so you can definitely enjoy! It's a little bit inconspicious as a speakeasy since you don't really go through the front but the back alley to find the entrance but it all adds to the experience and just all the fun for a good night! Came in Thursday night 1/4 Let's start off with the pro's: -Drinks were very good. -Great ambiance. I appreciate a cheaply done place that can pull it off, make people want to be there and dish out great drinks. -Lady bartender was very sweet and friendly Cons: -Sadly I didn't get to try the food, but heard it's amazing. Because of the things below I wanted to get out quickly. -The first one doesn't have much to do with the establishment itself... however I think the young lady worked there too. We walked in and there were two seats to the left of a young woman sitting at the bar. Glasses, hair up, shorter on the sides ... and from the way she chatted with people it sounded like she worked there. Me: excuse me... may I sit here? Her: She looked down at the seat and shrugged her shoulder. Me: So... is anyone sitting here? Her: Another shrug..."nope". Me: annoyed I said... do you understand I'm asking out of respect for you and not wanting to take your seat if you're expecting someone??? Her: back to burying her face in her phone l... no response. So needless to say things didn't start off good.... but oh well. -Next... some guy (flat brim ball cap) who was working there (not behind bar) stepped between my date and I to set stuff on the bar (no biggy).... looks and my date and very loudly in a obnoxious loud tone..."WHATS UP?!?!"... We're probably twice this kids age..... we just looked each other like.... okay???? -The bar top itself is gross. The inlay was done wrong and not deep enough. Therefore crevices everywhere... grimy and nasty. Great idea... but not done right. Felt like I was putting my arm down on a Petri dish. -Again... not about the establishment itself, however this woman I'm about to talk about either worked there or at a minimum was friends with staff. Blue hair I believe? She was outside the back doors both when we arrived and left having a smoke. Obnoxiously belligerent. I don't give a fuck about swearing... but this woman wouldn't shut the hell up. Loud as hell, talking about cock in mouth, fuck this and that... etc... I mean she echoed through the bar. Very very annoying. If she is friends with people who work there that's totally cool... but know when to put a gag in her pie hole. Some people need to know when to STFU. Seemed like a cool place... but the people there who work there or at a minimum are friends with staff need to understand that it's a business. Conduct yourself accordingly.
