Opelika, Alabama. Nice little stop on the way home from Fl to NC. Pleasant counter staff, and a tasty BBQ sandwich. The BBQ is a bit different from N.C. BBQ, but it was delicious, in its own right! The sides weren't anything to knock your socks off (I had the baked beans and potato salad), but they were ok. The sandwich was definitely the star, with slaw and pickles. Can not ever return to Chumps Bar B Que. I used to love some Chucks and tried to love it yet again today. I was just trying to love it again however that can not possibly be the case. Today I ordered the rib plate and the chipped BOGO. Total Total waste of time and money. The ribs were absolutely inedible. Those things were burnt until they were too dry and tough to even bite into. Not only that, the wood or plastic that was used to cook them over added a flavor/taste that can't be conveyed verbally. The chipped stuff ( mystery meat) was cooked on the same fire pit so it had the same burnt / bitter taste. Then it was mashed together and plopped on a bun. Somehow it gets even better. I guess potato salad equates to soggy cold former french fries. Needless to say this was far and away the worst $29 spent on food ever. Done with Chucks (oops) Chumps Bar B Que. Hit and miss! Somedays it is hot, fresh and wonderful, it just works. Most days, I would say below to average, it really depends on the time of day you visit, after 1:00 pm, forget it, warmed over butts, and ribs, not fresh off the pit but placed in foil to dry out and get tough, plus the chicken has a tendency to be undercooked. Chucks started serving fries, but they are steak fries which are undercooked and not very tasty. With that being said, if you are lucky, you can have some great BBQ, just do not hold your breath. read more

I read an article in the paper one day titled The Best Barbecue in Each County of Alabama. So while in Opelika, AL I decided to give them a try. I am damn glad I did. This is the quintessential barbecue joint. No frills, just amazing Q. I had combination of ribs and chopped pork. The ribs had the perfect pull and chew. The flavor was spot on, not smothered in sauce. The chopped pork was just as delicious. Portions of it had that burnt end taste, not over powering, just the right amount. Now that sauce. It's a mustard vinegar sauce with a slight kick. The people are extremely friendly and very helpful. I will be back again and again. read more

I've been eating at Chuck's over 40 years, starting when it was located behind a McDonalds on Opelika Road. It's just as good now as it was then. Good, genuine hickory smoked pit barbeque. They don't have a lot in the way of sides. The potato salad didn't taste homemade. Their BBQ cole slaw is a favorite. One of the better BBQ places I've ever dined. read more

Everything happens for a reason... Meeting runs an hour late in Auburn - which means flight out of Atlanta is missed and now there is actually time for a meal. Pit-stop at Wendy's, but a huge thunderstorm knocks out electric, so no food there. About 30 minutes east of Auburn is the Opelika exit and lo and behold, a Wendy's sign, but alas its a bait-and-switch and once you get off the exit a sign tells you that Wendy's is 1.6 miles down the road, but guess what...before you get there, you come to Chuck's Bar-B-Que. A mostly brick building with almost no windows and a large chimney out the back and in Opelika Alabama - one answer - check it out! The inside of the restaurant is basic. The menu is basic. Everything is basic...that means the focus here is on meat. There is a small variety of product, including chicken and ribs, but its obvious the priority is pork and it comes in two forms - chipped and chopped. Chipped is shredded and in the sauce and chopped is as it sounds, chopped and then sauce dolloped on over the top. I had chopped and it was great. This is pit-cooked BBQ with a tangy mustard-vinegar sauce that comes in mild and hot versions. It's not pulled pork with a sweet, tomato-based sauce. There is a difference. This is the style of BBQ I grew up with and love, and Chuck's does it as well as anyone. They have ribs and chicken, but the pork comes chipped, chipped on the block, or sliced. The sliced is more like chunked. The chipped is mixed with sauce before being served and the chipped on the block is chopped up when you order it and then sauced. All sandwiches come with optional dill pickles and slaw. And, there is sweet tea and various pies. I usually go for a chicken plate or a hot, sliced plate (or sandwich). I prefer the hot version of the sauce, but both are good. The Brunswick stew is also good. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. This is not a fancy place, but it is a good place and one I have been to many times. read more

I had to say a special prayer for the poor pig that was slaughtered to make that atrocious meal. From out of town and staying with a friend (who doesn't eat BBQ). I ordered ribs with a small side of the stew. The stew was tasty and no complaints there. The ribs were sparse and way undercooked, tough and pretty impossible to eat. I tried to eat one, checked out all the others, but they were the same. The mustard sauce was a little too intense for me, but that can be pretty subjective. But ribs should have the meat falling off the bone, and these were, well, inedible. I sawed off what meat there was and fed it to my friend's dog. Sigh. I was so hungry, too. I hope this was an isolated bad batch! read more

I have heard about Chuck's being the place for BBQ in the Opelika-auburn area. I received a lot of looks for wearing an Alabama shirt here haha. I went with the combo platter and subbed ribs in for chicken. The combo platter also comes with pork and 2 sides. The ribs come off a pit that is in the restaurant and covered with the mild sauce. They were not fall of the bone but easy enough to tear off the bone. Also, had a nice grill taste. The pork was chipped with some sauce mixed in and a lot of pickles on the side. I liked the pork better than the ribs but it had too much burnt end mixed in for me. There are 3 sauces. The mild and hot is a mustard vinegar variety and very similar to Dreamland BBQ sauce. The mild was waaay too mild for me. The hot was perfect and wasn't very hot in my opinion. These sauces are made in the store. The sweet was a good ketchup based sauce with honey mixed in. The potato salad was the best of my sides as it was a mustard/mayo base. Nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary. The 1st side I tried was BBQ slaw, which is slaw mixed in with their BBQ sauce. I didn't like it so I asked for another and they were willing to give me another. I chose the stew because it was their most popular. It was ok for me. It was a little spicy but had a good amount of pork to it. Sweet tea was wonderful. Chuck's wasn't bad. I just think I like other places better. Best ribs I have ever had! Mustard based bbq sauce is not what I am used to, but it was so good with these ribs!

I was not impressed. I got the cue potato with pulled pork. It comes with sour cream butter and cheese. I needed more sour cream, the potato wasn't all that big and wasn't very cooked. I added two small sides. The beans were okay and same with the coleslaw. I also got a large drink and it was 15$. Wasn't expecting it to be so expensive. The service was friendly and the recommendations for the third-pound of chipped BBQ pork were helpful. The interior of the restaurant was musty giving this restaurant an authentic BBQ joint in the middle of the South. I wish there more options on the side menu but I was happy with my stew. I grew up with this style of BBQ so I am biased - this is very good central Alabama BBQ. Simple but always perfectly prepared. Give the Brunswick Stew a try, served as it traditionally should be, with sliced white bread and dill pickle slices. One can and should certainly debate the varieties and qualities of all the regional BBQs but for this region, this is one of the best that I have enjoyed. Well done. read more
