Honestly I've had better chocolate. It seems they're known for their white chocolate with fresh raspberries. The white chocolate is not quality white chocolate made with coco butter, it seems to be white melting discs. Very disappointing and expensive at $4.50 for a very small piece. I bought 2 different pieces and was charged $9.00! Total rip off. As others have stated you must pay cash unless you buy 3 pieces. I won't be a return customer and wouldn't recommend to others. This is my go to for local chocolate and sweet treats. Especially during Easter. They make only a certain amount of chocolate bunnies. Some big and some small. I happen to pass by this area when I was in fort Bragg, and stopped by Mendocino so wanted to try it out. I've been buying chocolates from small shops lately and papa bears is one of the more decent ones. When I first bought chocolate from here, it was at the peak of the pandemic so we had to text our order after seeing what was on display in the window. Then you'll get a response when you're order is ready. I went here again recently and the owners have opened the shop so you can come in and see what they have. The chocolate from here is excellent as it's made in house, but it is pricey. They don't sell it by weight, but by piece. Every piece of chocolate or treat they sell is $4 (unless otherwise noted). There's a good variety and not all are chocolate. I got their Divinity (which is egg whites with pistachios and nougats), peanut butter fudge, white chocolate raspberry, and sea salt caramel. Everything was great. But it costs about $16 for 4 pieces so was pricey. read more

I agree the chocolates are delicious, very fresh, and made just right just like European chocolates. Note that the batches are prepared for the weekends so by early the following week, you may not find a new favorite so be sure to stock up. Excellent fudge, chocolate covered clusters and graham crackers. All chocolates are $4.00 each. Five stars for the product. Downgrade to four stars for service. The hired staff on the weekend are friendly and cheerful. But, oh my goodness, on a return visit on a Monday, the older woman was short and unapologetically rude talking to us with her back turned and short of flipping us off. Apparently, you cannot ask for anything that is not in the case to buy without setting her off. Period. Contrary to my spouse's advice based on such unpleasant customer service, I returned on a third visit before leaving town. The older woman with presumably Papa Bear in the shop was friendly enough. I validate the rudeness and areogance of the woman store owner. She also lies. One example, is she told us in July to come back in October for a specific product will be available. Today is October 17th. She smirked as we inquired about the item, saying not today, and literally just walked away into the back, not serving us at all. The guy who wears the colorful little head rag, who I imagine must be the owner, is a completely arrogant and disrespectful "papa bear". I was in there with my brother, sister, and three nieces. My niece orders two pieces of candy/chocolate and my sister asks if the fudge piece can be chopped into 8 pieces. He wraps it up and says, "I cut it into 6", with a slight bit of what I sense as an attitude behind his voice. My sister goes to pay and hands him credit card and he says she has to use cash or get a 3rd piece of chocolate in order to use her card. She says she doesn't have cash and she doesn't want another piece of chocolate. He then takes back the chocolate, that he's already placed up on the counter, and says, "Then you can't have it." (Again with noticeable attitude." I pull out 10 bucks and say that I have the cash for it and my sister says "You should put a sign out informing people of your policy so they don't wait in line if they don't have the cash." To which he says (with even more attitude), "I AM the sign." I had just spent $12. I was clearly with my sister and niece....This is how you treat customers that just came in and spent $20 total on chocolate? And literally going take back a 9 year old girls chocolate?..... Right before we had ordered I had noticed that the lady before us purchased a decent amount of chocolate, paid with card, and then before she left she asked for one more piece of chocolate and the guy had very irritably asked her "Do you have cash?" I didn't really get it at the moment because I wasn't paying attention but I thought it had been a very odd thing to ask after he had just accepted her card....plus how rudely he had asked it to her also. Clearly this is some thing he does on a regular basis and it wasn't just us. $10 MINIMUM FOR CARDS (not hard to accomplish). A must stop if you are in Mendocino or even Fort Bragg. But beware! Their hours are usually 12-5pm, but I showed up at 4:30 one time to find it closed. The employee informed me that if business is really slow, they'll close shop early. And sometimes when it's busy, they'll sell out of the favorites. So don't try to wait till closing time is my point. There are three chocolate shops that I know of in Fort Bragg/Mendocino, but they don't even compare! Everything here is so fresh that you can see them making stuff behind the display! You won't find that at any of the other shops; they might even have their products delivered, who knows. The HONEYCOMB is to die for. It's a hard spun honey and brown sugar bar covered in chocolate. The texture is kind of like a Whopper. It's my new favorite. My next favorite is the "Turtle" apple. It's a caramel covered tart-and-sweet Granny Smith apple rolled in sliced almonds and drizzled with chocolate. At $7.95 a pop, your wallet might feel lighter but your body will thank you for this delectable perfectly balanced fresh, sweet and tart, juicy treat. I recommend eating this outside at a table as it can get a bit messy. I like to have them cut mine up for me as well. As other reviewers have mentioned, you also can't go wrong with the raspberry bark with the fresh, whole, juicy raspberries. Beware though, with those heavy raspberries, the price-by-weight can add up quick. Another delicious one is the haystack, which is chocolate and coconut. You can choose milk or dark chocolate with that one. Mmm! Tasty! A bit sweet though, so make sure you have a solid sweet tooth before digging into this one. And finally, I've tried the salted chocolate covered caramel. I left this last for a reason, and it's not because it was the best. It pales in comparison to the others in my opinion. Papa Bear's has THE best chocolate in Mendocino, and probably in the whole county (why do a survey of places when you're so happy with what you have?). They don't always have everything available, but that's because they have only the freshest chocolate, which you can see being worked into confections right in front of you! The walnut fudge is my favorite, while my husband loves the caramel pecan rolls. They also ship, which makes a great gift for people who can't always get their sweets right here in Mendocino. Called here to see if there were open, the voicemail said to text your order which I did for caramel apples. We then drove from Fort Bragg to the store for pick up only to find a sign out front that says to choose from any 4 items in the window, none of which were apples, I also noticed that I hadn't gotten a response from my text. I then text again to order 4 of those items and got a quick response that it'll be ready in minutes. I asked if there were apples available and was told they'll have them around Valentine's Day. I'm happy to say the items I picked up (caramel squares & dark chocolate walnut clusters) tasted great!!! The low star rating is for customer service. It would have been nice to get a response instead of being ignored. Although Fort Bragg isn't that far from Mendocino, we were on vacation and may not have driven out of our vacation area if we knew there were no apples. read more

Death by chocolate... I have a major sweet tooth. MAJOR! Whenever I visit the charming seaside town of Mendocino, I absolutely must stop by Papa Bear's Chocolate Haus. As you approach the tiny candy shop you cannot help but enjoy the smell of the yummy candy. Mmmm A variety of homemade fudge is there for your enjoyment. My personal faves though are the fresh raspberry bark and the chocolate covered caramel bear paws with nuts. So good! I can never choose one over the over, so I always end up purchasing both. Each piece is a good size. I can never eat a whole one in one sitting. But that's ok. That just means that I am able to enjoy my tasty treats a little longer while I dream of my next excursion to Mendocino! ;) read more

You should really think about stopping by the quaint, small and authentic store, Papa Bear's Chocolate Haus, when you are in Mendocino. It's a good experience especially as part of the overall experience of touring this beautiful, rustic town. The chocolate here is very good... However, DARE I SAY IT, the raspberry bark was not that good - I am not a fan of white chocolate (it's not even technically chocolate). I stopped by here with my family and we grabbed a few chocolates on our walk around the cliffs. It added to the overall experience. read more

This was a great find after exploring most of downtown and the coast. Selection is limited but it's very neat to watch the chocolate making process in the window. Most of what is offered here is fudge bars and this unique concept of raspberries and white chocolate which didn't look appealing but sounded good. I decided on dark chocolate peanut clusters and an almond bark and was surprised that the bill came out to $14. Yikes!
