I told my husband to pick a thing as I wasn't in the mood for ice cream. He chose Black Forest ice cream. He knows I like cherryand just learned this year that I like chocolate. and that's how he chose this flavor. I tried some and it was so good. I loved the pieces. I could have done without the chocolate chips. I totally approve of the flavor. On my own I'd never picked this flavor. This shop is located in the heart of downtown Fort Bragg. Across from the Sea Glass Museum. Parking is all street parking. We found a spot right I. Spot. Street parking is free, but there is a two hour limited. So, if you're spending additional time downtown you'll have to move your car. The shop is new and clean. Even today Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 8pm (they close at 9) there was a steady stream of ice cream enthusiasts. They have so many loved flavors and some unique flavors such as mushroom and ginger. I should have tried them, but as I stated earlier I wasn't in the mood for ice cream. As much as I started not in the mood, I ate half his ice cream scoop. It was nice and soft. If you're looking for a sweet treat this is a must stop shop.
Cowlick's serves up wacky, but still absolutely delicious ice cream, making it a mandatory stop in Fort Bragg. Went around 6:15PM on a weekday and there was already a small line. By the time we left around 7PM, the wait had gotten much more substantial. Plenty of seating, but you may have to circle the block a few times to find parking. Service was friendly and kind, even as the evening rush began. Cowlick's most famous flavor has to be their Mushroom, which is surprisingly mild and doesn't taste out of place or even unfamiliar. It just feels like a creamy vanilla with a touch of earthiness. The Ginger on the other hand has a very strong flavor with tiny cubes of candied ginger in every bite. I'm a ginger hater and was surprised when this flavor really grew on me! Their seasonal was the Hokey Pokey, which is just a banging honey swirled ice cream.
Wow, my first review of Cowlick's was 15 years ago! They're still in the same space on Main Street and still have the most amazing ice cream. Sure, you can get your standards but it's the unique flavors that keep me coming back each time I'm in the area. I tried the ginger ice cream and it was perfect-great balance of ginger flavor with some sweetness. A mini scoop is the perfect little treat. In a town that shuts down early, they're open surprisingly later (until 9.) Even on a cold, rainy weeknight, the place was packed. Excellent service as usual and a local staple.
The ice cream is fantastic, 10/10 for the strawberry, mushroom was more of as 7/10, tasted like a light caramel with bits in it. The server was really nice and the portions were huge! I really enjoyed the strawberry and cone and she gave me a cup which we used for a lack of mess. The smoothie was terrible though, the sorbet was way too sweet and tart and it tasted not great. Def a must try for the ice cream.
We had such a deliciously wonderful time here at Cowlick's Ice Cream! Yes, let the name speak for itself! Not only cowlick but you-lick as well. So delicious with a reasonable price for all items. I love that this store is conveniently located right on the Main Street of historic downtown Fort Bragg. It has huge windows facing the west, the sunset and beach side. We were lucky to come here during sunset and able to observe all the beautiful colors that Mother Nature painted for us on that day . One step inside and you'll feel like a kid again. The store smelled deliciously with freshly store made waffle ice cream cone. Cute store logo smiled at you and the staff was also beaming. I felt instantly welcomed. They were a bit short staffed on the night I went but the service was top notch regardless. I was accommodated well and my order was ready within minutes. The banana split I ordered for my group was heavenly yummy! The portion was generous and there was ample of ice creams for 4-5 people. Perhaps it was because of the ambience, the sunset view or the good service or a combination of those. We all had a great time here and would recommend Cowlick's Ice Cream to friends and family who are visiting the area :)
Craving a sweet treat before boarding the skunk train in Fort Bragg. Found online that this was a really popular ice cream spot with classic, as well as unique flavors, like mushroom. Arrived and there was a huge line, which was unexpected. Didn't know the area drew crowds but good for this business. Got in line and it took about 40 min before we finally got around to ordering. Three staff members taking orders, scooping, and processing payments. They were out of waffle cones and mushroom ice cream, which was a bit of a bummer. Opted for single scoop strawberry in a sugar cone. Ice cream was really creamy with bit of strawberry. Not overly sweet, definitely a real fruit flavor. Objectively, a great ice cream but not something I'd wait over 30 minutes for. Glad I got to try something local and unique while visiting the area though.
Definitely not a fan having tried many other scratch-made ice cream spots. The ice cream is very thick and melts almost immediately. Flavor profiles are just ok. We had the ginger (self explanatory) and the S'mores (graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows). It's difficult to mess up stores but the base ice cream for both of these was just too thick. It leaves you thirsty. Service was good. We didn't bother sampling anything because the line was 20 people long at 8:00 PM. It took about 15 minutes to get through. Inside is clean and could probably use a refresher in the next few years. It's more touristy than anything
Plenty of flavors for scoops, shakes and sundaes. Line moves quite slow, inefficient process they have for making the shakes. Would only come back if there was a shorter wait (it was ~35min when line was just out the entrance) Got the honeycomb seasonal flavor and it was nice! Right amount of cream and honeycomb crunch mixed in
Decided to check out this local ice cream shop because I heard they had mushroom ice cream. Initially, I was going to go with that as the flavor just tasted like maple syrup, but after trying to Hokey Pokey (which is a seasonal flavor) I had to rethink. I believe it's a honey based ice cream and I really enjoyed the honey comb bits! The waffle cone was nice and fresh as well.
Swung by around 12 pm on a rainy Sunday and it was pretty empty. We tried 2 samples, peppermint and mushroom and decided to get a single scoop of the mushroom in a cup with a cone on top. There's plenty of seating inside the shop and they also have a bathroom! Single scoop was pretty big and worth the upgrade from mini in my opinion. Flavor wise, mushroom was sweet and similar to a butterscotch taste! Nothing mind blowing but very yummy! We left and when we walked around the area later, the shop was a lot more packed!
Plenty to love about Cowlick's. Fort Bragg has plenty of cute destinations and I'm glad I chose this place to visit. Here'a what you need to know. Plenty of parking. Both street and lot. Bathroom available. Free samples. Friendly service. Cute merch available. Mushroom ice cream doesn't have an overpowering flavor, just a hint. It's sweet and subtle. And it paired nicely with the mint chip that I chose to do halfsies scoops of. Quick service for a Saturday afternoon. Indoor seating to enjoy your treat.
Some of the best ice cream I've had lately. We both went with the Skunk Train Brownie, which is chocolate ice cream and warmed browned topped with nuts, whipped cream, chocolate/caramel sauce, and a cherry. The ice cream was so smooth with the right amount of sweet. The brownie was nice too. Thought about trying the mushroom ice cream I've heard so much about, but maybe next time.

Are you looking for a great place to spoil your next meal with a delicious snackaroo? I got you! The family had the pleasure of visiting Fort Bragg a couple of times this spring and the restaurants are good there, but Cowlick's Ice Cream is not to be missed! Everybody, but everybody is standing in line at Cowlick's Ice Cream, waiting to get some great one-of-a-kind ice cream flavors, floats, and toppings in downtown Fort Bragg. They have regular cones, sugar cones, waffle cones, and my favorite, chocolate dipped waffle cones! Ice creams can be adorned with with toppings galore and surely you will want to eat a nutritious meal, but may just go back for more ice cream! My personal favorite ice cream is the Hokey Pokey Honeycomb ice cream (on rotation, it is not available all the time). It is creamy and filled with honeycomb candy from a local Fort Bragg candy store! (Unfortunately for us, their the candy retail shop closed). The hubby and offspring went for and enjoyed the more traditional Rocky Road ice cream. Next trip I plan to try their ice cream sammys! The shop is clean and spacious, with plenty of places to sit inside and enjoy ice cream or shakes while watching the goings on in downtown Fort Bragg. I have never been there when there wasn't a wait to order, but it is well worth it! Locals and tourists alike can be consulted on flavor, cone or float choices. The clock is conveniently broken because when enjoying ice cream, who really cares about the time? So yeah, go spoil your next meal with some Cowlick's Ice Cream goodness! They won't disappoint! The best ice cream ever. The candy cap mushroom is soooo good and uses local sourced candy cap mushrooms( taste like butter pecan). It's a must stop when we have company from out of town. My Grandkids love it. Great ambiance and service. read more

Best ice cream in Fort Bragg. Open till 9pm daily. The ice cream is handmade and they have lots of specials daily that are not orginal flavors. You can choose cup cone or waffle cone. I. tried the mushroom ice cream it was so yummy! i also got the hokey pokey had different bits of different candy bar bits. snickers, butterfinger, etc. The rest of family got smores, and oreo. All where thumbs up excellent. 1O/10. highly recommend this place. You can sit down. there is plenty of seating. and cute atmosphere to eat ice cream. read more

Got to Fort Bragg late after a long active day of driving and exploring. To our surprise, there were not many places open. Did not think that we were that late. Guess the township just likes to rest early. Anyways we found a place called Taka's Grill to grab a quick dinner to go. Next door to them was Cowlick's Ice Cream. Made it into Cowlick's before they closed. WIfey and I browsed their flavor selection very quick. They had some interesting flavors, but did not ask if we could sample any because we could tell staff were in a hurry to lock up. Don't know if they let folks sample anyways so it was alright. We bought their Rocky Road. It did taste delicious, but not the Rockiest Road we've ever had. This was actually the second time we've dropped By Cowlick's Ice Cream shop over the years. First time experience a few years prior was fantastic. This second time experience not so fantastic. Overall experiences makes it 4 stars for now. read more

It's one of the best hot fudge sundaes I've had. Black Forest and vanilla ice cream with whipped cream, nuts, and cherries, of course, are great flavors working together. We got to meet the owner, too. Go, get some, "you scream, we all scream, for ice cream." I forgot to add that the day before, we stopped in Willits, CA, for ice cream. We found Cowlicks in the local mercantile store (worth a visit on its own). I had an expresso chocolate shake--a perfect late afternoon pick-me-up before driving Hwy 20 west to Ft Bragg. read more
We felt like some dessert after dinner and decided to stop by the ice cream shop. Great selection of flavors, comfortable atmosphere to have a cone, and friendly service to help you decide with a free taste. I ended up with the candy store, floor flavor, so many candy bar flavors. A lot of times along the North Coast, the weather (regardless of season) is not the most conducive to ice cream urges. When the fog rolls in or it's one of those gray days, the thought of ice cream might be the last thing your cold body tells you it needs. But I'm here to tell you to NOT LISTEN to your dumb body, and get yourself to Cowlick's. Because ice cream is always the answer! Small town, handmade ice cream is one of the greatest pleasure that life offers. And Cowlick's is as small town and hand made as it gets here on the North Coast. The vibes, the friendly service, the selections, the original & imaginative creations, and above all the taste keep me coming back again and again. Sometimes embarrassingly often. During peak tourist season, the lines can indeed get long. But the staff have always kept the line moving. And besides, good things are sometimes worth the wait. Your reward for a little patience will be some of the best ice cream you are lucky enough to taste. While I like the fact that Cowlick's offers unique sundaes and smoothies on their menu, I'm a stickler to my childhood favorites. And above all else, I love me a solid chocolate malted. The Cowlick's version uses rich chocolate ice cream, whole milk, and a generous amount of malt powder. If you're drinking a malted, you wanna taste the malt! And unlike some places that hand you the equivalent of concrete in a cup that's impossible to suck up through a straw, Cowlick's makes their shakes thick but drinkable. Life's short and I don't have time to wait when I need an ice cream transfusion! Cowlick's has been dipping ice cream in Fort Bragg since 2001. Here's hoping they keep the scoops going for many decades to come. read more

I am visiting from out of town and was looking for dessert after a meal that left me disappointed Cowlick was about the only option other than going to Safeway and picking something out and taking it back to the hotel I'm staying at, who doesn't like ice cream. When I arrived there wasn't anyone inside but the door was unlocked, I stepped inside and could hear someone in the BOH but they didn't know I was there which was fine because I was looking at all the flavors, they all sounded good since it's fall I opted for a single scoop of pumpkin in a waffle cone. It was a generous portion for the price. I sat inside since it was cold and dark outside. A few people came in and made purchases while I was there. It was really nice flavor and could tell it is made with quality ingredients If your looking for dessert/treat And ice cream sounds good to you, stop in you will be glad you did read more

Really impressive flavor variety and fresh waffle cones made Highly recommend Honeycomb ice cream called Hokey Pokey - made with some local confections. A two scoop cone was great to share - fair size in general. Cookie Dough ice cream was just fine Note at least a 30 min wait in line on weekend seems standard. Staff seems to move at leisurely pace even with a line out the door. read more

Enjoyed a one scoop Candy Store Floor Ice Cream Hot Fudge Sundae and a cup with Cookie Dough (made with Mendocino Cookie Dough...YUM!!!) and Candy Store Floor. We both preferred the Cookie Dough ice cream. Great service and pleasant atmosphere on the main drag in Fort Bragg. read more
