We were on our way to another (shall remain nameless) highly touted sandwich place, quickly surveyed what would have been at least an hour long line (outside the building), then made our way north to Papa Joe's. While Papa Joe's may not look like much, they take Cubans seriously. Coincidentally, we ALSO take Cubans very seriously, ordering them almost every time a restaurant brags about this glorious go-to sandwich. And if Cuban is in the name? Oh yes, we're ordering one...annnnd maybe one to go. We ordered the large signature cuban with grilled onions and a black bean side. FANTASTIC. Seasoning and spices were on point. Textured, pressed, hot roll...everything you want in an authentic cuban. The only thing we'd like to see is a double meat option so we can REALLY fill out the bread. Just a little bit of hot sauce brought out all the flavors. We look forward to our next trip to PJ's, cuban sandwich, and black bean TUB. We'd also like to see a gun rack of hot sauces (instead of packets) to compliment such a great sandwich and sides. read more

Owners were very friendly and informed me they had been in business over 30 years. Love finding these hole in the wall places! Wanted to really love this place, but it's Cuban Sandwich is average at best with not allot of meat and I wasn't a fan of the Potato Ball at all. It tasted burnt and re-heated. Okay so, I have to admit that I've been to Papa Joe's Cuban sandwich shop twice this week. The first day I went, I ordered Meal Deal. I chose a small Ybor City Cuban. The deal comes with a fountain drink (but they offered me a drink out of the refrigerator), and chips or a side. I got black beans and yellow rice for my side. The Cuban is one of the best that I've tasted here in Tampa! Today, I got the barbecue pork plate. It comes with two sides either french fries, black beans and rice, or potato salad. They didn't have french fries so ordered black beans and rice. The pork was tender, juicy, and delicious. And, I enjoy the flavor of the black beans and yellow rice. The customer service is stellar. The staff is friendly. Both times that I went, they greeted us with a smile. They're quick, too! Your order comes out rapidly and I appreciate that because I don't have a lot of time to eat lunch. The Cuban sandwich is pretty solid. It's nicely pressed and tasty. The $7.99 lunch special is worth a mention. You get an 8" sandwich with your choice of potato salad, black beans & rice, french fries, or a side salad. A large fountain drink also comes with the lunch special. You can get other side items for an additional $1 or $2 up-charge like the potato ball or devil crab. I wasn't a fan of the potato ball, but others at work thought the devil crab was pretty decent. They are also open for breakfast. I recently got the café con leche on my way to work this week. It was pretty good. The service is always with a smile. The wonderful lady at the counter is always upbeat and loving life. She makes me happy. I'll be returning for sandwiches and coffee. I think I'll try the breakfast sandwich next time. read more

Cute place but just your average sandwich place. I had Cubans here and they're good. I decided to get a Philly cheesesteak and it was average. Meat was decent, roll was dry and crumbling apart and the cheese ok. The deviled crabs are decent, good amount of filling but are on par with the other ones of this style. Not like a Brocato's or a Cacciatore and Sons deviled crabs. Next time I go I might try the muffalatta or the roast beef sub. read more

Pretty solid Cuban. By default, they wanna put Mayo on their Cubans, but I'm all authentic and what not, so ordered it with the basic 7 ingredients. The sandwich, while is a little lighter on meat than their advertisement, was tasty. What stood out was the pork. It was definitely fresh, as evidenced by its juiciness and tenderness. The flavor was spot on, and by that, I mean it wasn't overpowered by mojo marinade, which is a major no-no for me. I don't mind the mojo, but I need to be able to taste the pork, and that's not an issue here. Very well executed. My only gripe is that the sandwich is pressed to where the entire sandwich was hot throughout. The Cuban is a cold cut sub, and should only be pressed long enough to heat up the bread, traditionally. Not a deal breaker though. I'd eat this sandwich again if given the opportunity. It was good Cuban bread but hardly any meat, so much mustard it was overpowering (I posted a pic), and no cheese in spite of the menu description saying it should have Swiss cheese and I in spite of my request for Extra Cheese. Came by on Friday afternoon, very slow. We got two 12 inch Cuban sandwiches and stuffed potato. The Cubans were good with pulled pork on them. If you want awesome food at great prices then look no further than Papa Joe's Cuban Sandwich Shop. They are amazing. Follows directions perfectly. I don't know where to start. So far, everything i tried is tasty, and I've tried close to half their menu so far.. Cuban sandwich is great, Meatball sammich is yummy. BLT is good. Italian sandwich is good.. Breakfast potatoes are really good and if you ask them to add salt and pepper to them, they are seasoned to perfection.Also you can order them anytime of the day. The Cuban toast with cheese is my favorite in Tampa. The stuffed potato is very good and the Devil Crab is a show stopper. It is big, really big. I usually can only eat half and put the other half away for later. For $5 it seems impossible to create a crab of its magnitude. And last but not least,... the potato salad is on check. I ain't gonna lie, if they sold it in quart size containers I would never make or buy potato salad again. If it is pre-made, it is the best I have ever had. Give them a try, you won't be sorry. It only took me a few months after working in the area to find Papa Joe's as you could easily miss it driving down MLK. Even after reading the Yelp review and wanting to check it out, I had a hard time finding it. Look for the brown banners or the cycle shop signs! They have a good mix of subs and platters. The Cuban sounds like a top seller and it is good. Prices are reasonable and sub toppings any way you want it. Pressed and good bread, though I like mine with a hotter meat center. The footlong large is for the hungry or feeds 2. I tried the pastrami sub that was good but not my favorite. But then again it's been a quest of mine to find a great one in Tampa but so far they are just okay. The shredded pork platter with rice and beans were flavorful. Lunch Dec 12 Ordered via phone and picked up in like 10 minutes - very fast service. Cuban sandwich was better than most and was a lot bigger than I expected. 12 inches, cut in half and then each half cut in half! Enough to share! Pork was juicy/moist, bread was fresh and warm, had a bit too much mustard to my taste. But for a quick lunch this hit the spot! Only call out would the Devil Crab.
