We had such a great experience at Grand Olde Station! They are dog friendly, which is a huge plus for us, and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather (it was a perfect 69° today!). Since we yet outside in the front you get the pretty view of Lake Toxaway! We started with the bruschetta appetizer, and it came out quickly. It was so fresh and flavorful that we were honestly surprised at how delicious it was. We loved it so much we decided to try the crab cakes too, and those did not disappoint either. For mains, my husband had the chicken and waffles and absolutely loved it. I ordered the honey bourbon roasted chicken thighs, and they were incredible, tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We recently came to Grande Olde Station as we were staying nearby. The restaurant definitely has a beautiful setting, even with sitting outside while cars zoom on by! They are dog friendly with their patio seating. We were started with hot rolls with honey butter, which were so good! But here is where the issues started. We ordered the fried plantains as an appetizer, I ordered the crab cake appetizer as my meal, and my husband ordered the trout. We waited for a little bit and then my husband's trout was brought to the table. We were asked if we were sharing this when it was delivered, but we said no, we ordered an appetizer and one appetizer as a meal. They apologized and said that is all they saw on the ticket, and they have some new cooks, but would go check on it for us. We waited...and waited, and finally my husband started on his meal so he could enjoy it warm. Eventually, the plantains and the crab cakes came out. My husband enjoyed his trout, and I thought the crab cakes were fine, but the standout was the plantains. They are very different than what I have ever had. They were sweet, spicy with the chorizo, and cheesy. Highly recommend that appetizer. Our server never checked on us during our meal and took awhile to eventually check on us when we were finished. It was like he forgot he had a table to serve outside. Even with the poor service, we decided to order dessert, and went for the brownie skillet. I was expecting this to be like a cookie skillet - cookies cooked in a skillet, served gooey and warm with ice cream on top. This was just a brownie plopped in a skillet for show with some ice cream. It was fine, but ultimately a disappointment. For a place that is a little bit on the pricier side, I cannot give it high stars as we did not get the food and service as expected at a nicer restaurant. They definitely have potential to be better. read more

Its clientele are rich folks on vacation at the lake who never complain when bikers show up to drink at their bar. The managers sometimes look a bit nervous about it, but the staff are always cool mountain folk and often bike riders themselves.⁩ The bartender asked me about tattoos. Another of the kitchen staff stopped by to ask me about my gear, which he admired. The owner I don't know, but he's clearly a local history aficionado whom I suspect I'd get along with well. The whole place is full of pieces of local history, photographs from long ago in the mountains, historic weaponry as well as framed news clippings. It's a little pricey for the mountains, though it'd be cheap in a city. The food is always good, and they keep an interesting and rotating selection of local brews on tap. read more

Anytime we're in the area, we always make a stop here. The GOS always feels warm and inviting. The service is spot on, very responsive and friendly. The food is always great. My family always orders the fried pickles. My youngest loves the boxcar chicken - says it's his favorite sandwich. I usually get the cheesesteak or Shrimp and grits. Other favorites are the burger, wedge salad, and trout. Put in a reservation to assure a table when you want it - especially in the summer. read more

I really enjoyed the location of this restaurant. Located right off of a main road but yet spacious with plenty of parking. A great view of the lake and outdoor space on the side: fire pit, small fenced in area for dogs, plenty of seating and little covered spots. We sat outside on a Saturday in the fall and enjoyed the views. I thought the overall menu prices were high despite the relaxing and cozy environment. My friend got the tuna tacos and did not enjoy them. They did not come with a side and were barley full tacos. My meal was ok, nothing special. I wouldn't go back for the food but definitely would sit outside for a drink there again. read more

The service and food were top notch! We were greeted with a warm welcome and seated quickly ( we did have reservations and I would highly suggest making them as the restaurant is small but cozy). We had the fried green tomatoes for an app (I could have eaten another plate of these for my meal and been happy - so good!) and we both ordered the pan-fried trout which was excellent. Have tried this a few times. New owners/chef. Crab cakes consistently so salty they are pretty much inedible, but you wait so long for them that you are starving. Prices have gone wayyyy up in last few years. I know food cost have too, but fi go re out a way for a hamburger not to be 20$ and a cheesesteak 25$. Maybe this is just tourist pricing? Either way, not worth the prices. Only good thing is the lake across the street, but like i said, havent been back. Fantastic!! Sat outside with the dogs on a lovely Saturday afternoon with a lake view. Fell in love with the warm interior. Great fireplace. Really nice bathrooms! Food was delicious. I had the station salad as a side and it was the treasure salad I've ever had. Edamame, avocado, quinoa....delicious. Note that the Ranch has Parmesan cheese in it. Not what I expected. The best thing this restaurant has going for it is limited competition and a captive audience. There aren't a ton of options in the area, and Grand Olde Station is good enough to stay in business. We were there on Tuesday, in fact, and they were packed at 6 pm. The food was ok. At our party we had several entrees. I loved my cobb salad but the special - beef stroganoff - was bland and boring, mostly noodles with cream. The other entrees were unimpressive EXCEPT for the chicken & waffles. How can you go wrong there? I had wanted to try the bread pudding but we were eager to get our check and go. (Read on...) The wine list was wanting. Sonoma Cutre Chardonnay was a good option, but they were out. That left two options - a local chard or an $85 bottle of Davis. They did have other options in both reds and whites, but it's a short list - especially if you're just looking for a glass. The service was horrible. The server had too many tables and everything took forever. There were four of us, and none of our drinks were right. No apologies from the server, who basically blamed it on us. Two of us ordered Stoley's martinis and were surprised when we were served vanilla vodka. She looked at us and said, "well that's the only Stoley's we have." We're still laughing about that one! But again, no apologies - she just acted like we got what we wanted. She forgot the lemons, didn't pour the water, and I waited on my wine for at least 20 minutes. When we asked her for it, we got a tongue-lashing about how busy she was. I could go on - that was just the drinks. Fortunately, the floor manager was very helpful. I wish I would have gotten her name, because she filled in behind the server to help wherever she could. The ambiance is charming and reflects the local history. Love that part. Waited a long time to visit here. I believe they do close during the winter so plan accordingly. Came here after hiking Panthertown and Trish was our wait person and the bartender. She made THE MOST AMAZING cocktails for my friend and I today. We both had cobb side salads with our mains being the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich (The boxcar I think) it was HUGE and delicious and my friend had the crab cakes. She's pretty picky and thought maybe the crab was canned but that they were very good as she ate every last morsel. The food and the cocktails were awesome but I would not be able to bring my family here as it is on the pricier side. There are deep wallets in this area of Lake Toxaway so this should not deter. The decor is beautiful and nostalgic. It was a quiet night when we came with a family of 7. The service and food was a little slow and they were out of quite a few items on their menu, however there was just a hurricane so I understand supply issues and it looked to be our server was the only one on the floor. The food was great, my family and I ordered their ribeye special they had that night, French onion soups, a blackberry and strawberry salad (the menu advertised chickpeas but mine came with edamame) & a shrimp scampi special amongst other menu items. I would come again and I do recommend, the location is beautiful, the decor is cozy with a lit fireplace, locomotive decorations, taxidermy animals, Lake Toxaway history and makes the meal not a forgettable one. I'd love to sit outside some other time when the weather is warmer (I'm from Florida) but if you do check it out, try inside first. read more

We recently celebrated 33yrs and this place came highly recommended for dinner. I believe it is the site of the old train depot for Lake Toxaway. The hostess was nice and wished us a happy anniversary. The waitress was very nice and helpful. The ambience was great showing off history of the area. The food, 3 stars at best. Lisa got the sweet tea marinaded fried chicken sandwich and I got the trout fish and chips. Her chicken was just horrible. So rubbery she had to cut it to eat and struggled cutting it. It lacked any flavor. My trout was dry and the crust was burnt. The should have stuck with Atlantic cod for the fish. We both had sweet potato fries and they were very good in fact we brought them home to enjoy with another meal at our cabin. I know sometimes we get unlucky with places that have high marks but the food here was just terrible. We also had to wait over an hour to get our meal. I'm sure it gets a lot of local traffic because lake Toxaway is kind of like a lake lure and there's houses all around the lake but I don't think I would give this place another look. read more

We love this little local place, but it has become very disappointing. The prices have soared (20-25%) since late last season. Our bill was $100, including tip. We had a burger and side Caesar salad, and a pasta dish with chicken. I had a $14 glass of Malbec. That's a lot of money for a simple week night meal. The menu has a NY Strip Steak for $50. Really. We all know food prices have increased quite a bit, but this is over the top. It makes me so sad as we love the atmosphere, but can't come here as often. read more
