I went in this evening because my dachshund has parvo. The staff, technician, and assisting veterinarian were very friendly. However, I chose not to proceed because the estimate was not clearly itemized like those provided by other veterinary clinics. Each line was lumped together and listed as miscellaneous diagnostics, injections, and medications. I'm sure they are more affordable than other emergency vets, but I would like to know exactly what my pet may or may not receive, and no alternative treatment plan was provided. Dr. Proenca at Papaya has turned the vet-client relationship on its head. We have an 80-pound lab who's at least 13 years old - hard to know since we adopted him from a street rescue. He's riddled with lumps that his regular vet didn't want to remove given his age. He'd recently developed a very large one on his side. Over Thanksgiving, it became horribly itchy and started bleeding uncontrollably to where he couldn't sleep. We consulted our regular vet, who suggested we take him to Papaya. At Papaya we met Dr. Proenca, who ordered a series of Xrays and blood work. When the Xrays found likely cancer under the bleeding tumor, we thought it was time for euthanasia. Dr. Proenca refused, wanting us to instead pay for more tests (needle biopsies, etc), saying her job is to "advocate for the animals" (as if we hadn't been doing that for all our dogs' lives) and that if vets didn't say no, then "euthanasia would be all they would do all day" (really??). We left distraught, pretty sure we knew what was best for our dear dog, and confused why this one vet was on a mission to stop them. read more

My dog recently needed emergency surgery after swallowing a toy, and the squeaker got lodged in his intestines. I had a really good experience here. I was referred here from their urgent care in Carmel Valley. This ER facility is brand new and has a comforting aesthetic so right when I walked in I felt like this place seemed legit. My dog saw Dr. Brooks and Dr. Boisse and they were both extremely knowledgeable. The staff was friendly and attentive. They didn't leave me in the waiting room not knowing how my pet was. I was part of my dog's care. I was made to feel welcome and could ask anyone anything. Price wise all things considered, I've been to a few ERs in the area over the years and this place seems to also be much more affordable than some others. Hopefully I will not need to take my dog to the ER anymore, but if I do, I will be back here 100%. read more

My 4 1/2 pound Morkipoo was brutally attacked by a large dog at the Encinitas dog park. She lost a lot of blood and was in shock, and I rushed her to Papaya ER. It was absolutely amazing how they swiftly took her from me, quickly got her wounds cleaned and bandaged, quickly got her on IV antibiotics, pain, medicine, and electrolytes. She came in in critical condition. They also gave her oxygen and kept her for 24 hours. What an amazing team they have! Dr. Chelsea Iverach, DVM is amazing! Her staff, Kelsey, Morgan, and Cass are so knowledgeable and so caring. I brought my sweet Bailey home and she is doing so well. They definitely saved my sweet baby's life! We took our sweet 2.5 year old golden retriever in last weekend because we had a sneaking suspicion she had eaten something she shouldn't have, and boy were we right! From the moment we got to Papaya we were greeted so sweetly by their front desk staff and we were promptly taken back where our pup got X-rays and an ultrasound that confirmed she had something in there that needed to come out. They were so honest and transparent about everything that needed to happen and I am so glad we went to see them. The staff is excellent and timely, the techs were so sweet to our Rosie girl who was not doing well at all, and the doc was so informative and never made us feel bad for asking a million questions! I had taken my cat in for an emergency procedure. and first thing you sign a paper that wasn't explained unknowing as soon as they take your pet to the back saying they already started working on them and you owe money before discussing anything so you have to stay there. on top of that I had a question with my insurance that they needed a answer from the vet first to see about coverage and I asked the vet if they could call them real quick and they said yes . then 10 min later I asked the front desk what happeed and they went to the back and just said the doctor would call basically refusing to just help when for normal people that's a very big deal what's covered or not out of pocket. then after all this we were sent home with medicine and I called back saying he wasn't eating and they said it's crucial he eats right away and just bring him I. was the answer . I explained the 2 medicines made him so drowsy he couldnt even stand up all day how is he going to eat along with the labels on the medicine saying It makes him not want to eat . and their answer was just bring him in. I got a second opinion from another doctor and took him off the medicine and he got better and didnt cost us another doctor visit for something so clear that wouldn't work. terrible experience all around and the doctor was very rude and not sympathetic at all that 6k procedures are not easy for everyone to just pay for no problem. read more

I had to take my 12 year old chiweenje here at 10 pm after he was throwing up all day. I wasn't sure what he ate or if it was necessary to bring him in, but I was so glad I did. I chose papaya because it was down the street from my house and had great reviews. The doctor and staff were so nice. The dr immediately ran a first round of diagnosis and provided the cost breakdown right away. They let him wait in the lobby with me and even brought him a little doggy bed to lay in. I went home for a few hours to sleep while they monitored him. He ended up needing surgery and I received a phone call and email with another cost breakdown. I was provided with frequent updates and calm and patient staff as I continued to call for days with follow up questions. When I brought him back for stitch removal, everyone there knew him and they were excited to see him doing better. Every single person there was so kind and I felt they truly cared about my dog. I really appreciated the cost transparency as that is probably the second most anxiety inducing issue aside from your pet's health when you have to take them in for an emergency. If I could give 0 reviews I would, a few months back I took my dog to get his rabies shot here. After receiving the shot my dog was vomiting, panting, and not eating his food. I figured it was the shot but then received a call months later from Papaya Clinic saying that they gave him the wrong shot. I have no idea what they gave my dog but ever since then my dog has been breathing heavily, will gag and some cases vomit quite often. When we asked for a refund they would not issue a refund and instead said they would give my dog the right shot for free. The staff does not care about your animal. I would stay far away from this place. read more

Had to bring my dobeman in on an emergency basis for a back injury and the team was prompt and extremely helpful. We were able to see Dr. Boisse and she took the time to review the x-rays with me and show me areas of her spine that are changing as my doberman is getting older. Although it did not look like the spine injury was bone or disk related I was relieved to rule out the worst case scenario. The techs that took my dogs x-rays were so gentle with her even though she is extremely anxious and gased everyone out. Grateful that I was presented with various treatment options and was able to ultimately utilize medications I already had at home from a prior injury. I feel horrible about giving this review only because I believe 1 of the Best vets works here, Dr Mireille Boisse. This is a new facility & I have taken my dogs here 3 times. My male dog has a very serious condition, he has Irritable Bowel Disease. I have taken him here when he had an attack in Dec2024 & was given life savng meds for him. They shorted me on 2 of his medications causing him to stop treatment & wait for them to give me the corrected dosage. I believe this break in meds caused him to have another attack in Jan2025 & another bad attack in Feb2025. They gave me more meds & once again they did not calculate the dosage correctly, causing me to have to call them again for more meds. I spoke with their manager Milan who was so disrespectful to me & lied to me about shorting me the medication for my dog back in Dec2024, that I am now ready to move on to another vet practice. Once you know someone is a liar, you know you cannot trust them again. She has ruined my 20-year relationship with Dr B as I will not return to this practice as long as they have Milan there as their manager as she proved to me, she could care less if my dog lives or dies & my dog is too important to me to be treated so horribly by this horrible person Milan! This is no longer the practice for me! read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. My dog is my life and sadly he got attacked by a mean dog on a Sunday, one bite was pretty deep and a large wound. We took him to Papaya and immediately the front desk ladies were so comforting and saw us right away. We left with staples in the wound and 2 prescriptions and I was surprised the price was under $500 for a 24 hr urgent care vet. They also mentioned that most dogs need to be put under but since mine is so calm and easy they were able to do a topical anesthetic (many vets just immediately suggest putting them under and rack up the bill). The healing process has not gone as smoothly as I had hoped but that was not their fault at all. Unfortunately my dog was able to remove his cone and rip out all of the staples a few days later, completely reopening the wound. I brought him back in immediately and they saw us quickly and redid his staples for only $160. Since then, my dog has still found ways to lick his wound. Twice I have called panicking afraid of infection from how the wound looked after licking. I emailed them photos and they comforted me and told me it looked fine (most vets would tell you to just bring him in and charge up another bill). The second time I called concerned, they suggested bringing him in to see if they can just pull the staples out early and if another round of antibiotics would be suggested from the licking. I brought him in, they took the staples out and prescribed me an anti inflammatory/pain ointment that was only $25 and said the antibiotics aren't needed! The wound looked good and is healing nicely despite the licking. The whole entire process I have felt so heard and seen in my worries and their communication and care have been so amazing even though I've been a little high maintenance. I just wish they provided regular vet services rather than just urgent care because I would switch to them for my usual vet in heartbeat! Thank you so much to the whole Papaya team! read more
