Devin and Dr Brooks provided excellent care for our cavapoo puppy. There were no extra tests that they tried to push on us or x-rays or additional fees. We highly recommend papaya and hopefully won't be back but if we have to go back to a vet and are in the area, Papaya will be our first choice. Thanks again guys.

I can't express enough gratitude to the incredible team at Papaya Vet for saving my dog's life. My dog recently needed emergency surgery after swallowing a toy, and the squeaker got lodged in his intestines. It was a terrifying experience, but the veterinarians and staff at Papaya Vet were exceptional from start to finish. Dr. Bui did the surgery and I can't express enough how amazing she is!!!! The staff was soooo amazing! They let me be with my sweet boy while he was recovering and they explained everything they were doing. They answered all my questions (which was a LOT! And they never acted annoyed with me like most vets do if you ask lots of questions) I will forever go here now instead of our general vet. Even though papaya is typically an emergency clinic- their care is so much better than any vet I've been too. The cost is worth it. I truly believe God led us here! And my baby is home!!!

I've never gotten to watch them work like this or for this length of time. The Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is something that I've never seen before and I am so impressed. It's open concept so everyone being treated is all in the same room and they let you stay with your pet the entire time, even during surgery. They even have rooms that you can sleep in! They let you lay on the floor and hold your baby, they get on the floor to help your baby. I couldn't stay with Mei touching her or even letting her see me because of the spaz attack she has when she sees me which causes her to gasp for air, but they got me a padded bench to sit next to her chamber, close but out of sight. I watched them do a surgery on a cat, a surgery on a dog, leap tables to get to a dog who was seizing, to hold him safe while another tech skidded across the floor with meds like out of a movie, I saw them sprint across the room to stop a large dog from hurting himself, deal with sobbing pet parents (me), carry a massive pig in, x ray that massive pig, treat a ferret, treat a dog for rattlesnake bite, and all the other stuff- it was non. Stop. all with calm yet fierce professionalism and kindness and caring. It takes some special people to work in this field! Competent af. These people know what they are doing. I came flying through their door at 9am with Mei in significant breathing distress like a bat out of hell. I practically fell through the door. I thought she would die in the car on the way over there. I called to let them know I was on my way and they were ready for me when I got there. They shouted "triage!" And 4 people rushed over and immediately put Mei on oxygen and went to work troubleshooting. They put her in the oxygen chamber right away. They noticed that when she saw me she lost her shit and started gasping like crazy so they told me to hide to keep her calmer; and they were right. When I laid down on a bench and closed my eyes I awoke to the doctor putting a blanket on me and the nurse had left a pillow. The open concept allows drs and nurses to move quickly and freely and see everything and communicate things that they need. There were not curtains to block what was happening, no doors to get in the way, you see it all. I appreciated it because I like to KNOW. I want to SEE, otherwise how can you know they are doing it right? I highly, highly recommend them! Blessings on all the heir houses! Truly angels on earth. I owe them a debt I can never repay- they saved my Mei Dr Romy was our doctor and she even stayed late to make sure that Mei didn't get lost in the shuffle during shift change- and I'm talking hours late. If there was ever a vet that deserves donations and volunteers to help it's them. Donate! Volunteer! I am so grateful to them I can't recommend them enough!

Walking into an emergency vet is always stressful, but the staff here immediately made things feel calmer. Everyone at the front desk and the techs were kind, patient, and never made me feel rushed or silly for being worried. We saw Dr. Leah Sauerwein, and she was amazing. She explained everything in a way that actually made sense, talked through options, and made sure I felt comfortable with the plan. You can tell she really cares, not just about the pets, but about the owners too. That level of trust is huge when you are dealing with something unexpected. Both visits were smooth, professional, and compassionate from start to finish. I left feeling informed, supported, and confident in the care my pet received. I would absolutely come back if I ever needed emergency care again, and I would recommend this location to anyone in the area.

We drove there at 1am in the rain and had high hopes she would pull through, but the X-ray showed a terminal issue and the outcome was inevitable. We appreciate the compassion and professionalism of the staff, especially so late at night. Would highly recommend. My only complaints: 1) No airflow in the two rooms off to the side. Not so bad if you're only in there for 15 min but after an hour, you have to open the door just to breathe. 2) The TV in the lobby is too loud. The people working the counter can hear YOU through the glass partition, but are not aware that your ears are competing with the TV just to hear what they're saying back at you. Another customer came in just after us with a dog whose eye had popped out of the socket. :-( They also had difficulty hearing anything from the counter staff thanks to that TV. Maybe a nice, quiet video loop of relaxing/calming scenery, flowing water, etc.? I can't hear over David Attenborough's voice and that's saying a lot since he's a fairly soft-spoken guy.

When the staff spoke with us, his response was dismissive and showed no compassion. He even asked if bloody diarrhea was our only concern, despite us clearly explaining how serious her symptoms were. When I described Peanut's symptoms to the front desk staff, she immediately tried to assume it was a seizure, even though that was never part of her symptoms. After 45 minutes of waiting, the staff told us the doctor was ready and asked us to hand over Peanut. We were confused as to why we couldn't be present for the initial exam, but we complied. Another 30 minutes passed, and when we asked for an update, we were told the doctor was with another patient and Peanut was "next." Then Peanut vomited blood again, so she was taken back immediately and again we were told she was next. We waited another hour, and by this time it was 12:30 AM with still no care provided. At that point, we were frustrated and concerned for her safety, so we decided to leave and find another urgent care. We found WAG Animal ER, only 8 minutes away, with the same $100 exam fee and no wait. The difference was night and day. The staff there was kind, compassionate, and professional. Peanut was seen by a doctor within 5 minutes. And the Dr even called us 3 days later to check on her status.

It seems to be a very efficient operation. They have comfy seating and a coffee, drink, snack counter. After an EKG was done, our pet cardiologist explained in great detail what she saw going on with our Riley dog. Turns out he's ok. After getting the referral I called to get scheduled. For a business open 24/7 no one ever answered the phone. I ended up going on the website and filling out a "Contact us" form. I will say the from the time I entered the contact us the contact that was made (via email) was quick (same day) requesting more info. The next day I had an email about a consultation appt (which was scheduled 29 days later- includes weekends). In the email they stated the consultation would be $265 for an hour. It was interesting my vet had recommended us to the hospital for oncology but we were then scheduled an appt with surgery (I am not sure if they had the records from the vet and that is why they went surgery not oncology or what). The day of our appt they ask you arrive early and like any appt nowadays you get there early to be seen 10-15 minutes after your appt time. The first part of the consultation was the vet tech asking about why we were there and putting the info in. They took my dog to be weighed and get other stats, then brought them back. The Dr (surgeon) came in and had a believe a resident with him. The dr explained what was the recommendation (surgery) but answered all my questions, even ones about what would happen if I did not do surgery (it is expensive). The dr was kind and understanding and said it was ok if I chose to do nothing. He gave me signs to look out for if my pet was in distress or decline as quality of life would need to be assessed. I got the actual quote for the surgery and it was $1500 less than the Dr had estimated (which was appreciated) and the vet tech went over some of the charges I may not incur if they are not needed (blood transfusion, extra night in hospital). I appreciated that they were willing to have some flexibility in what is a cost prohibitive procedure. They did not pressure me to make a decision, stated I could call back after having time to think or explore finances (it would require some kind of financial assistance to be able to do the surgery, the vet tech gave us some options she had utilized in the past). The Dr also wrote a rx for essentially dog Tylenol and called it in to Costco to further save money. I understand that Dr's expertise (and the vet tech) needs to be compensated but $265 for talking for less than 30 minutes seems excessive. For about a 45 minute appt with the vet tech/Dr (surgeon) it was about $6 a minute. If you spread it out over the time we were waiting in the lobby not interacting with anyone if brings the cost down to $5 a minute for the hour long consultation. I feel it would have been more reasonable to have a fee of around $150. Parking is very impacted in this area due to many businesses sharing one lot. The spots are also small and people do not park well so you may not be able to get in or out of your car. Overall it was a good experience but an expensive one.

Dr. Proulx is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and kind. He answers all of my questions thoughtfully, even when I call from home because I'm a nervous dog mom. We just took my dog to the urgent care this weekend, and it was a great experience. I called in advance to say I was coming up, and they were able to see him right away. We brought our cat in around 9 PM on a Sunday because she had sudden weakness, was falling over, and was clearly having trouble using her front leg and part of her body. We repeatedly told them something was seriously wrong. Instead of treating that like the emergency it obviously was, they became fixated on claiming her carrier smelled like marijuana and suggesting possible THC ingestion. That theory made no sense to us, and worse, it distracted from the actual symptoms we were there for. Their own written notes said our cat had "no apparent lameness," normal pupils, and no neurologic abnormalities. That did not reflect what we were seeing at all, and later vet visits found far more serious neurologic issues. We were also told, "yeah don't worry, there is nothing absolutely critical right now." That was completely wrong. We were sent home with reassurance that this would likely self-resolve. Because of that, there was delay before we got her properly evaluated elsewhere. We later found out she had a very serious condition affecting her brain, and vets are now telling us it may be lymphoma or a viral infection. Either way, this was never some minor "maybe she ate something weird" situation. What makes this so disturbing is not just that they were wrong. It is that they were dismissive while being wrong. They minimized obvious red flags, focused on an unlikely explanation, documented the visit in a way that downplayed what was happening, and sent us home with false reassurance when our cat needed real urgency. If your pet is falling over, weak, unable to use a leg properly, or showing neurologic symptoms, do not trust this place to take it seriously. We regret going here, and we regret trusting what we were told.

My experience with this hospital was extremely disappointing, not only because my dog's condition…read moreworsened after the visit, but also because of the unprofessional way the situation was handled. I brought my dog in because he was panting heavily and seemed restless. At that time, he was still active and able to walk and run normally. After the examination, the hospital performed X-rays, blood work, and an ultrasound, and I was charged about $1,700. Despite all of these tests, they said they could not determine what was wrong with him. Even so, they prescribed antibiotics and discharged us. When we returned home, my dog's condition became dramatically worse. He stopped eating and drinking, became extremely lethargic, and within 24 hours he could barely move and was unable to walk on his own. I called the hospital and was told this was not normal, so I brought him back immediately. However, instead of trying to investigate what might have gone wrong, the hospital insisted that I would need to pay again just for bringing my dog back . The veterinarian suggested they could prescribe painkillers if I wanted. I explained that my dog had been walking and active when I first brought him in, and that the only symptom he had was panting. After all the tests and procedures performed at this hospital, he left unable to walk. Yet the staff still could not explain what had happened and continued suggesting additional medications. The most concerning part of this experience was the veterinarian's unprofessional conduct. When I expressed that I did not think it was fair to pay for another recheck under these circumstances, her attitude immediately changed. She insisted that my dog's current condition had nothing to do with their treatment. Feeling frustrated and unheard, I decided to take my dog home and seek another opinion instead of continuing treatment there. Later, my second veterinarian requested my dog's medical report from Escondido Veterinary Emergency. I learned that the report included details of the argument I had with the hospital and quoted my words. Including personal disputes with a pet owner in a medical record is highly unprofessional. Medical reports should document only the patient's medical condition, findings, and treatment. Recording and sharing personal arguments in a professional report can unfairly influence other veterinarians reviewing the case. As of today, Escondido Veterinary Emergency has not yet sent me a copy of this report, despite having paid $1,700 for the tests and procedures. I strongly encourage other pet owners to think carefully before bringing their animals here.
