I wish I could give them 100 stars! I was there 16.5 hours with my 5lb Japanese Chin, Mei Mei, who unbeknownst to me, had pneumonia and I am in awe of the vets and techs there. I've never gotten to watch them work like this or for this length of time. The Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is something that I've never seen before and I am so impressed. It's open concept so everyone being treated is all in the same room and they let you stay with your pet the entire time, even during surgery. They even have rooms that you can sleep in! They let you lay on the floor and hold your baby, they get on the floor to help your baby. I couldn't stay with Mei touching her or even letting her see me because of the spaz attack she has when she sees me which causes her to gasp for air, but they got me a padded bench to sit next to her chamber, close but out of sight. I watched them do a surgery on a cat, a surgery on a dog, leap tables to get to a dog who was seizing, to hold him safe while another tech skidded across the floor with meds like out of a movie, I saw them sprint across the room to stop a large dog from hurting himself, deal with sobbing pet parents (me), carry a massive pig in, x ray that massive pig, treat a ferret, treat a dog for rattlesnake bite, and all the other stuff- it was non. Stop. all with calm yet fierce professionalism and kindness and caring. It takes some special people to work in this field! Competent af. These people know what they are doing. I came flying through their door at 9am with Mei in significant breathing distress like a bat out of hell. I practically fell through the door. I thought she would die in the car on the way over there. I called to let them know I was on my way and they were ready for me when I got there. They shouted "triage!" And 4 people rushed over and immediately put Mei on oxygen and went to work troubleshooting. They put her in the oxygen chamber right away. They noticed that when she saw me she lost her shit and started gasping like crazy so they told me to hide to keep her calmer; and they were right. When I laid down on a bench and closed my eyes I awoke to the doctor putting a blanket on me and the nurse had left a pillow. The open concept allows drs and nurses to move quickly and freely and see everything and communicate things that they need. There were not curtains to block what was happening, no doors to get in the way, you see it all. I appreciated it because I like to KNOW. I want to SEE, otherwise how can you know they are doing it right? I highly, highly recommend them! Blessings on all the heir houses! Truly angels on earth. I owe them a debt I can never repay- they saved my Mei Dr Romy was our doctor and she even stayed late to make sure that Mei didn't get lost in the shuffle during shift change- and I'm talking hours late. I have been to VEG in Oceanside twice now, both times on weekends when my regular vet was closed, and I honestly could not be more grateful this place exists. Walking into an emergency vet is always stressful, but the staff here immediately made things feel calmer. Everyone at the front desk and the techs were kind, patient, and never made me feel rushed or silly for being worried. We saw Dr. Leah Sauerwein, and she was amazing. She explained everything in a way that actually made sense, talked through options, and made sure I felt comfortable with the plan. You can tell she really cares, not just about the pets, but about the owners too. That level of trust is huge when you are dealing with something unexpected. Both visits were smooth, professional, and compassionate from start to finish. I left feeling informed, supported, and confident in the care my pet received. This is the second location for VEG that I've visited (and the second time to this location in less than a week). The entire staff is absolutely wonderful. They are caring about each and every pet that comes in. They treat every owner with compassion and understanding. They're quick to triage and start addressing the pet's issues. They have multiple rooms and alcoves/nooks for owners to sit in with their pets as they receive treatment. The vets and vet techs have an extremely high level of knowledge and can seem to diagnose and address concerns within a short time of seeing the pet's.i highly recommend coming here if you have any concerns about your pet and your vet isn't open. read more

I have used VEG for two emergencies, One just this morning to have my 18-year-old cat euthanized. Some people say that VEG is expensive but when I went to them at 3:30 this morning they charged me $150 less than any of the low cost daytime vets in our area! My dog Spec was attacked by my roommate's pit bull. The first emergency vet I called said it would be 5 to 6 hours before Spec could be seen. VEG Oceanside was able to see Spec right away. I loved their open plan where my dog was always with me. We had to wait for a second vet to come in before starting treatment, but Spec was then stitched up with care and precision, a process that took over 2 hours. Due to complications, we spent the night for observation. We were given a private room with a couch opened into a bed. My other, uninjured dog was also welcomed. The care we were provided was the best I've ever witnessed. The support I received was amazing. Every single vet and support person was excellent. They ensured we received not only veterinary care, but snacks, drinks and water. And a phone charger. This event was one of the most traumatic of my life. I brought my pup Eugene in because he wouldn't stop throwing up. The team at Veterinary Emergency Group went over all of the treatment options at different price points and clearly explained the benefits and risks of each one. They were extremely friendly, accommodating, and truly cared about my fur baby. X-rays showed he had an obstruction, and we made the decision to operate sooner rather than later which we're so grateful for, because there's no way he would have been able to pass it on his own. Both the morning and night shift doctors and nurses were incredible. Every single person we interacted with was kind, attentive, and genuinely caring. I chose to stay with Gene overnight, and they set up a little room with a pull-out couch, complete with sheets and a pillow. They let me be as involved as I wanted and never once made me feel like I was in the way or asking too many questions. They even brought me a heater at night, and one employee gave my husband the chair he was sitting on when we went to ask if there was one available. The doctors and nurses explained every step of the process in a way that made us feel informed and supported. We also asked if we could split the payment between multiple cards (which some places don't love), and they were incredibly understanding, no judgment, no pressure. Amazing place! Our dog had choked on a bone and was frantic. We were greeted by staff and the vet was right there. She was given an injection to calm her, and X-rays followed and results were quick. The doctor explained everything as to what the plan was and treatment was instituted. My husband and I are both Rns and picky, but neither of us have anything but praise. Not only this, but I was not in an appropriate financial position for this situation. The staff at VEG met me with care and compassion. When presented with a $2000 estimate I was panicking. I told them I had no money, not even for the exam. Instead of turning me away, the incredible Dr. Uretta and staff provided my dog with supportive care, free of charge. This is prolly the worst.. my dog is dehydrated and weak and vomiting bile for four days and hasn't drank water and they wanted to charge me 1858 Dollars for blood work X-ray and sedation and sedation medicine and literally overcharged way more then the regular ER price.. I couldn't afford it and applied for scratchpay and care credit and And other places for funding and nothing they all say they pay for surgical procedures but not for diagnostic.. after sitting in a room for two and half hours they tried to charge me 276 dollars for the check up and two nausea pills.. are you kidding me . They couldn't even check the dog because the dog didn't allow them too and they wanted her sedated.. and so 276 for two pills to calm the vomiting not to help the underlying issue and to sit in a room for two hours.. . After me scrambling trying to figure out how to get that paid they must've gotten tired of me and sent me on my way and said it's okay don't pay anything.. so now my dog who is severely dehydrated and obviously very sick is supposed to just die? I don't get it what do I need to do to get her the help she needs I've called clinics and funding and programs.. I'm surprised that they literally just let us out and knowing that the dog is not gunna be okay if I don't get her the help she needs.. read more

This is my second time at this hospital bc my other dog ate acorns and got sick on our hike. We were nervous when we walked in and we felt immediately taken care of by the staff. It can be stressful when you have a sick fur baby, and trying to find a place that'll take them (especially if you have an exotic pet) isn't as easy as it sounds. One night, my pet was showing symptoms that led me to think he was getting sick. I called, explained what was happening, and the person that answered helped me right away. She even put me on hold to talk to the vet, and provided advice on next steps. I brought my pet in and they immediately knew who I was. Everyone dropped everything to help me, and they took my rabbit into a room right away and I was with him the entire time! You really don't see or get this type of service everywhere, so this was really nice seeing everyone jump in to help him feel better. The vet helped explain a few things we could do / try. Once we decided on a path forward, a couple vet techs came to help my rabbit with next steps and the team at the desk texted me a quote so I could review it on my phone at the same time. They offer military discounts, so mention if you're in the military, every little bit helps! This place is truly amazing! They are wonderful, patient, and everyone helped explain things so I could understand! They are efficient, timely and reacted to my emergency as if it were their own. We recently visited VEG Oceanside after noticing that our dog's ear hematoma had significantly increased in size, covering most of her ear. When I called Wednesday night, the vet tech advised us to come in due to possible pain and discomfort. When we arrived, we waited in a private room for about five hours before being seen. We completely understand that it's an emergency hospital and there were many urgent cases, so the wait itself was not an issue. We were then seen by Dr. Smith, who explained two treatment options: draining the hematoma with a syringe or performing surgery with stitches, which she suggested would reduce the chances of it refilling. Based on her recommendation, we agreed to the surgical route. After the procedure, she chose not to administer a localized steroid due to concerns about our dog's heart and advised us to monitor for swelling, discharge, or other symptoms. Shortly after, our dog began experiencing multiple concerning symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, significant swelling in the ear, and discharge with a foul odor, exactly the warning signs we were told to watch for. I want to emphasize that two other doctors at VEG Oceanside were excellent. They specifically advised us to come back in to have her ear checked and recommended that she receive a steroid injection. We were not attempting to return unnecessarily, we were following the guidance of their own veterinary team. However, when I called on Monday, Dr. Smith got on the phone. After I explained the symptoms in detail and mentioned that we had been advised by her colleagues to return, she repeatedly emphasized that this was an emergency room and directed me to go to our primary care vet instead. She also stressed the long wait times and suggested coming back later when another doctor was available. This was extremely frustrating and concerning. From the start of that conversation, it felt like she did not want to deal with a post-surgical complication from a procedure she had performed, despite clear symptoms and prior instructions from her colleagues to return. Being redirected elsewhere under those circumstances felt dismissive and inappropriate. We ultimately took our dog to another emergency animal hospital, where the veterinarian told us that her ear was infected and that the stitches placed by Dr. Smith were cutting into her ear due to the swelling. They had to remove the stitches because of this. The doctor also administered a localized steroid injection and was not concerned about it negatively affecting our dog's heart, which directly contradicted what we had previously been told. This experience was unacceptable. While we truly appreciate VEG Oceanside and have had great experiences with other doctors there, our interaction with Dr. Smith felt lacking in accountability, urgency, and compassion. Her recommendation led to complications, and her response when we reached out for help made an already stressful situation much worse. I had a really great experience here over the weekend. Well, pretty terrible as a pet owner, but the staff and quality of care made it better. My dog needed surgery and we ended up here at 7:30 on a Saturday evening. It wasn't too busy, and we were greeted right away and given a place to sit, my dog was given a mat at my feet. We were checked in and met with the vet pretty quickly. She was wonderful (Dr. Urett) . Although my dog was very lethargic, she is usually very stressed at the vet. The fact that she was with me until they rolled her into surgery, was helpful to both of us. The open concept is great as a pet owner to see and stay with your pet, but a little unnerving at times as you can see other dogs coming in from all sorts of situations and see through the windows into the surgery room/ prep area. Dogs who aren't lethargic might be overstimulated if there are a lot of animals around. Just to keep in mind and know what you're walking into. I stayed until my dog was out of surgery at 2am. I was offered a room that I could sleep in and stay in with my dog. How cool is that? I declined and was told I could come and go to see her whenever I wanted to. The staff provided me updates as surgery went along and the vet came out to show me what they pulled from her stomach. I was there from 7:30pm to 1:50 am. I was the only one there after midnight or so. Shout out to Maddy for talking with me here and there while I waited (obviously bc it wasn't super busy at the time). She had great customer service skills and clearly cared for animals, and loves her job. One other woman was so fantastic and answered when I called to ask questions before coming in and then she was there during surgery. She was so wonderful and I wish I remembered her name. All staff I spoke with were wonderful. My dog stayed over night. Sunday they were slammed so I put my patience pants on. I called for updates and the vet (shift change at 7am, new vet from night shift surgery) told us to come in at 4pm to help feed her one more meal to clear her to go home. We got there around 3:50pm and walked out at 5:15 or so. Discharge is a little slow, especially when super busy as you can see the vet consulting while trying to check you out. The open concept allows you to see why things are taking a bit longer, so although we were ready, we could see why we needed to be patient. Not once was I worried about the quality of care. The place is clean, fitted with modern equipment, and everyone appeared to like their job. It get cold there, bring a jacket and socks. I was offered a blanket, it was awesome. Obviously emergency vets, vets in general, are expensive. No one is happy to pay thousands of dollars on the spot, but truly, what are your options? Before adding the surgery, we were quoted $1900 for the visit and all diagnostics. Yes, my vet would have been cheaper, but they were closed, so here we were. It is what it is. They offer care credit and another type of payment plan. I optioned for care credit. Adding the foreign body ingestion surgery, my total walking out was $10,500. I was quoted a range between $10,500- $13,500, depending on damage and what needed to be done during surgery. Let me tell you I never thought I'd be one to spend that, but here I am. And more importantly, here is my alive dog. Someone recommend this place to me, so I will recommend it to you. I will go back if needed. Dear god, I hope not. I was told they have animals with more important needs to be seen, while watching them help customers that came in after me and my pet. I brought my cat into VEG during an emergency after she had been vomiting multiple times within a short period, including one episode that appeared blood-tinged. Since VEG was the only vet open at the time, we went there, and overall, the experience was very positive. They saw us immediately and treated the situation with urgency and compassion. What I especially appreciated was that the staff never made me feel judged when I chose not to move forward with every diagnostic or treatment option offered. Instead, they still took the time to work with me on a reasonable plan to help my cat feel better, which meant a lot during a stressful moment. My only complaint--and the reason I'm leaving this review--is related to communication after an incident during treatment. While my cat was receiving care, she needed IV medication. After several attempts, the staff decided to try one of her front paws. Up until that point, my cat had been restrained and poked multiple times without reacting--no hissing, swatting, or movement. However, when they attempted the front paw, she reacted and bit one of the technicians. Given the circumstances--being sick, stressed, restrained, and poked multiple times--I believe this was a natural reaction for a cat. My issue is not with the staff member, the bite itself, or the fact that protocols exist. I completely understand that they must follow certain rules. What left a bad taste in my mouth was that I was never informed at the vet that this incident would be reported. A few days later, I came home to a notice from the San Diego Humane Society placed on my door, stating that my cat had been reported for biting someone and outlining steps I must take, with fairly harsh language if I did not comply. I just wish someone at the clinic had given me a heads up that this was going to happen. Finding out that way was upsetting and avoidable with a simple conversation. Clear communication would have made a big difference. Overall, I'm grateful for the care my cat received and truly believe the staff had good intentions. From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed, the clinic was clean and I was greeted by smiling faces. Jose (spelling?) the tech brought us over to a quiet private area and did our intake. He was super sweet and really seemed to genuinely care. Everyone I spoke to the whole time I was there was friendly and professional. Dr Hallam was so sweet with my little Riley, got right down on the floor with her and treated her like she could have been her dog. That made me feel so at ease, knowing the person treating my pup really cared. But it wasn't just my experience I was aware of. There were other pawrents there and they were all receiving the same great care and attention. I was there for about 3hrs start to finish, I feel that is reasonable considering we were getting x-rays. Multiple times I was offered coffee and water and even snacks really truly great customer service. When it was time for us to leave, everything was explained to me in detail. We were visiting San Diego in early December 2025 with our two dogs. One is 16 years old and the other one 15 years. Our 16-year-old was having trouble and needed emergency care.
