Deb is the best stylist I've found. She consistently does a great job with my very difficult hair. She was also great with color as I was letting my hair go gray. Deb creates stylish cuts for all hair lengths (I've had them all over the years) and genders. She is responsible, reasonable and just a really fun, upbeat person, so you are guaranteed a good experience. The ambiance will either be quirky, interesting and quintessentially Venice Beach or a little too Hard Rock and edgy, depending on your taste, but even if it doesn't seem like your vibe, I still recommend giving it a try. She is SO talented and creative, and at the same time careful and meticulous. Her number 1 concern is to make sure that I am 100% in love with my hair when I leave her chair. Her cuts/color are incredible. After she's through with me, I am always certain to be showered with compliments day after day from friends and strangers alike. She truly gets the balance of creating a fresh hairstyle within the limits of each person's comfort-zone. Recently, she did the brazilian blow out treatment to my hair and I am not exaggerating when I say it has changed my life. My unruly, frizzy, thick, coarse, wavy hair has been silky smooth, flowing and light as air for the past 4 months straight. It feels stronger and look shinier than it ever has. I feel like she gave me a new head of hair and it is so liberating and confidence inspiring! I can't wait to go back and have her do it again. This place is great! Natasha is the best! I've heard from alot of people that she was excellent at cutting hair, especially at slickbacks etc. and she doesn't dissapoint. She actually took her time to plan out the haircut, length, fade, sides etc. I've been going to the same person for over 25 years but needed a change, as my hair was either getting cut too short or left too long. With Natasha it was perfect, with a nice fade which wasn't halfway up my neck. Ok so I'm a boring old lady now, but back in the day I was a surf punk in Venice with a Mohawk. This funky place made me feel welcome (Deb's amazing) and Everyone here is rad. It's nice to find real people (in LA!) who care about the work they do. They gave me a cool enough cut that I don't blend in with the soccer moms but those moms will still be my clients. My daughter was inspired and got a great fade too. We will definitely be back. Maseo is fantastic. YELP helped me with this one! I followed the advice of other yelpers and chose Niki Rae as my colorist. I haven't been happy with any spots here in LA for highlights or color until Paper Rock Scissors. I love the individuality of this joint and how cool Niki was. She really lived up to her hype. I knew that my coloring request was going to be a challenge since I wanted this Victoria Secret Model's hair from a picture that I brought with me!! Well after hours of Niki's hard work she was able to create a masterpiece on my head. I had a base lift with a full highlight and it look dynamite! She was so patient and attentive, even though her little girl's birthday party was just an hour after my appointment she wanted to make sure that my first visit wouldn't be my last. I made a Yelp account just to say this - Went to get a haircut and color job with Niki Rae after a botched at-home attempt at golden streaks. I am very VERY picky about my hair, especially because I have "Asian" hair, which is thick and often hard to navigate. I was looking for a place that would take the time to understand my hair and the vision I had for it. My expectations, which were already very high because of Yelp, were exceeded. Niki Rae was a phenomenal colorist, cut my hair EXACTLY the way I asked, and on top of that, was one of the most genuine individuals I have ever met. She asked me all the right questions about my hair, what I do for a living, and about how sustainable my new hair would be in that environment. I have already gotten multiple compliments on my hair from people who would normally just look on. I started highlighting my hair when I was in high school...and after h.s. whenever I was going home for a weekend or the holidays, I'd have my mom make an appt to get my hair cut and highlighted and the same place I've been going to since I was 12. Then I moved to California and it got a little difficult to fly home to get my hair done, so I tried a few places out here...Kenneth George, Frome, Fred Segal. All the same: overpriced, underdelivered. I realize stylists don't want to use something to 'harsh' on my hair, but I have an issue with spending $300 for a cut/highlight only to come home, wash my hair the next day and have bleached blond streaks all over my hair b/c the hair dye already washed out! And of course I can NEVER style my hair they way they did so I'm stuck with this rediculously stupid hair. So I turned to box dye and went over a year without a haircut (the last one was way brutally short). It worked out well until I got engaged and a friend took "engagement" photos and noticed my hair is like 10 different colors and completely ratty at the bottom. So, I took action: I Yeped, found Paper Scissors Rock, called them, and Niki squeezed me in an appt, gave me a jello shot, and went to work. She did a great job...I told her no dramatic highlights, just something to blend in all these colors going on. She did just that and then after she dried my hair asked if I wanted just a little highlight for some pop...sure, why not. She did just that. I appreciate that she first did what I asked and then suggested something within the lines of what I was looking for. Also, I hate when stylist tell me to come every 6-8 weeks...like I have that kind of money or want to spend my Saturday with foils all in my hair. My visit was early-September. She gave me a sweet birthday haircut and flat iron... and everyone I know has commented on how hot it looks. I've gone to Nicole for years now, following her wherever she is available. I would never cheat on her! I am a loyal customer to Nicole for life and she has become a great friend from all the hours I've spent in her salon chair going from long-blond-highlights to shoulder-length-dark-brown. For years now, I've been touch-and-go when it comes to going to a hair salon. I've done a lot of home coloring and a lot of home cutting (bad bad idea). The main reason has always been mula but I have to admit, I've never found a salon that I felt I had to return to. That has changed with Paper Scissors Rock and Niki Rae here in Venice. I found the salon and Niki here on Yelp when I moved here a year and half ago. And because I recently had another amazing experience, I decided it was finally time to get off my lazy bootie, join Yelp and write a review. When I first visited this website looking for a salon, I wasn't too hopeful. I was looking for an amazing place, an amazing hairstylist and the all-around Venice experience. My hair is ever changing so I needed to find a place that could be okay with that. The reviews were fantastic, the history of the salon was great...and they mentioned cocktails! Yep...on my way! Trying to keep this short and so not succeeding! I've been back now five times, each time with a new request, and I'm never going anywhere else. Niki Rae is phenomenal! I always love my hair when I leave. She listens. She understands. And she is a wonderful human being. I love talking to her and when I leave, I feel like I just hung out with a good friend on a Saturday. The salon itself has the best atmosphere. Everyone is friendly, fun and good at what they do. It's obvious. And they each get a chance to play their own soundtrack which just adds to it all! I'll move on to the last experience that made me finally write my first review. My younger sister was in town for a month and wanted to get her hair done. We are very different in our styles but I knew that she could find the right person at my salon. Making an appointment, the women were so excited to have a sisters day and they welcomed us both with open arms. My sister and I spent four hours there that Saturday and I would not trade that experience for anything. It was a beach party on a Saturday...with cocktails, hair color and tons of good music. Cut = 4 stars Ambience = 3 stars Customer Service = 2 stars Getting my haircut always brings out the Social Anxiety Disorder in me. I hate feeling compelled to talk to someone about my life. I hate being forced to stare stare at my face in a mirror for an hour. Plus I always feel like stylists are making passive aggressive criticisms "oh, do you dye your own hair? cool... what shampoo do you use? hmmmm..." Ugh. I hate haircuts. But enough about ME. I got to my appointment right on time, I brought my BF and our dog for moral support. There were four stylists in various stages of working on clients. No one even looked up, much less asked who I was and why I was there. We sat for over 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. My stylist Frankie came over and brought me to the chair. I wasn't sure what I wanted but I knew I needed to get rid of some messy ends and I wanted something a little choppier and lighter for summer. She worked fast and gave me a nice cut. I am not sure what everyone else was talking about with the cocktails and jello shots. I wasn't even offered a glass of water. Sometimes I think Yelp can inflate your expectations and sometimes I think that sucks. Not sure yet if I will go here again. read more

Firstly-- I would recommend that anyone and everyone give this salon a try at least once-- you'll be hooked!!! So Just a quick update-- I've still been going to Keren to keep me blonde in sunny southern Cal. I went to her yesterday to get my base done (still only $60 which is nuts)--They had cocktails, and lots of yummy treats which I punished myself for eating later on. Keren (as always) gave me a great blonde job with no brassy orange to be found anywhere-- She even me a FREE deep conditioning treatment on my hair. She was also showing me photos of a bride's hair she had given 18" extensions to over the weekend, and looked fabulous and I daresay... natural! She gives great prices on extensions too! Every time I go in there, there's some kind of food, beer or cocktails being poured lol. This place is still fantastic, and they do a remarkable job on everybody's hair-- giving them exactly what they want and need. I'm sorry Amber A. had a bad experience-- she must have been in an impatient mood or something, because EVERY hairstylist at this salon is super-friendly, nice, and quick to jump at helping every single customer that walks through the door (partially because they'll be a customer for life and want them on their books ;-) This place is solidly world-class. read more

So I originally would have given Paper Scissors Rock 4 stars but.... So yelp sent me here (well in so many words). Such amazing reviews, how could I not give it a whirl? I went to Candi because her name was all over yelp. Candi was super friendly and I told her exactly what I wanted. My hair seemed a little less blond that I thought it would be but she said try it out and I could come back and she'd fix it. Well after getting multiple opinions and some people not even noticing my highlights, I called her up and went back to get it blonder. Candi was awesome and did a great job. So why only 3 stars. Well for 1, I had the most amazing person ever in SF and so it's really hard to give someone a perfect rating after having her. And then 2, Candi is fabulous but she's way into yelp, facebook, and linked-in. In fact I was added on all 3 after 1 visit to her. Fine everyone has their thing but after 1 visit, it was a little too close for comfort. 3- the place is a little grungy inside, but hey it's Venice. So with that being said, I just don't know if I'm going to go back although I would recommend the place just wasn't my type of social style! read more

This place is okay. I went for a bit of color and a cut with Candi. The color came out really well, A+ for Candi, but the cut fell a lil flat. I like a bit of an edgier cut, lots of choppy layers, razored ends- which she did- it just didn't quite hit the mark. The way she styled the hair after she finished the cut was a lil too prom queen for me. She used a round brush and flared out the ends, i straightened it out a bit when i got home, and it turned out relatively well. I was charged $90 for the cut and little bit of color. No Yelp discount. My friend went to check out Paper Scissors Rock a week later, also was scheduled with Candi, and her cut was a disaster. Her color looked good, but her cut was truly awful. I doubt she'll be back. Overall, the color was good, the cut was eh, and the price was average . WOW. I tend not to believe the hype on here, especially when it comes to salons. I've seen a review by the owner herself touting her prowess and fantasticalness. I call BS. But I needed a cut desperately, didn't want to spend $100 for a 2" removal and little shaping, so I searched. I found Paper Scissors Rock on Yelp and decided to call. To my delight, I got an appointment for the next evening w/Frankie, who's glowing so much on here, she's her own light source. I walk in and Frankie greets me, but is with another client so I have to wait - I'm 20 minutes early anyway, so no biggie. And yes, they offered tequila and margueritas, and a sampling of the Mexican food they had at the time. In no time Frankie was sitting with me and discussing my hair. I have issues that are unique but she responded with enthusiastic professionalism. She was amazing, understanding that I wanted to grow out my cut, but happy that I understood I'd need to lose about 2" to do so. She gave me a great cut, kept length, and made it fuller than my hair had been in ages. I'm not able to make it as shiningly straight as she did (I'm blessed with raucously wavy hair), but it's body and fullness can be attrbuted to the new cut. I've recommended my sister go, and she should be making her way this weekend. I am contemplating going blonder, and will be heading Frankie's way once I sack up and make the appointment. And yes, $10 discount for finding them on Yelp. Halleluia - a place I can go to on my time that's not Supercuts, but gives an AMAZING transformative coif. I'm a PSR convert! read more

Finally!! I have been growing my hair for the last 2 years and have gone to 4 different salons/hairdressers. Time after time I was disappointed and paid top dollar for these mediocre hair cuts (Trim, Sit Still, etc.). Niki Rae at Paper Scissors Rock is seriously gifted. Love this place! They've done a great job with my hair. I've had the same standard cut for YEARS. Having recently relocated to LA, I figured now would be the time to mix it up! She suggested long.
