I came here for dinner with some of my girlfriends after passing my masters defense and it was a great time! Our server was attentive and friendly, and our food came out great! The food here is always good. However, for some reason every time we order queso and chips it's super runny and watered down. The service has gotten a little slower as well. The food on the other hand is always really good outside of the runny queso. It's got a nice atmosphere with plenty of TVs to watch a ball game. I got the 4 taco plate and the pastor tacos were actually not good, they used canned pineapple which is fine I guess but its flavor was distinctly off, the asada was also dry and flavorless. Went to Papi's with a group of then. It wasn't my choice. We sat in the indoor patio, thank goodness.. It was National Margarita Day, so you can imagine how packed it was, and the service showed it. They were premixed (I asked) so did not have one. So, we put our names on the list, and were able to sit outside with the manager bringing a space-heater - the staff was awesome, and super fun. One thing this restaurant does nice, is that they bring out tiny bowls for everyone to pour salsa into - so you can double dip your chip as much as you want! With a wonderful patio, vibrant interior, and welcoming and capable staff, Papi's in Palomar was an enjoyable lunch stop. I ordered cheese enchiladas with rice and beans and my husband got asada and chorizo street tacos with the bean soup. The provided salsa was a non-spicy, but good salsa, and the chips were a thickness that could have stood up to a hearty pico de gallo, but not overly think. A great chip. The tacos were good, my husband said the chorizo wasn't very spicy. He enjoyed the corn tortillas as they had good flavor and didn't fall apart. He scraped the bowl on his bean soup. The rice and beans were middle of the road. Okay, not bad. The enchilada was filled with colby jack cheese, I believe. I am not a fan of that type of cheese in my enchiladas, but it was a tasty dish. Our total, including one soda and a water, was $38.94 before tip. All in all, we will recommend Papi's as an easy meal out in a convenient location. Plenty of choices on the menu. My husband and I went to check out Papi's in Palomar on a Saturday this summer after hearing great things about their new location and patio. We waited about 20 minutes for a table outside which wasn't terrible considering how busy it was. Once we were seated our waiter brought us waters, chips, and salsa and took our drink order. My husband got a margarita on the rocks which he reported to be good! For my entree I ordered the veggie fajitas which were delicious and was a generous serving. They came out sizzling hot as you'd expect! The only reason for the 3 star rating was that both of our stomachs hurt the next day...We have eaten at the Papi's in Chevy Chase and the Papi's Rapido and have never had this issue. Because of this, I would be willing to go back to Papi's in Palomar to give it another chance! read more

My husband and I decided to give this place a try because we were on this side of town. It was so busy we sat at the bar but the service was amazing and we even had the owner taking our order. It's a little loud in here but I gave 5 stars on the mole all on its own. My husband had the beef chimichanga but no picture happened since all thoughts left my brain after trying that mole. The owner said his mother makes it for him and it's the best I've ever had. It was the perfect balance of sweet and savory with a hint of spice. On a lazy Sunday afternoon after Derby the first thing most people are craving in Mexican fare, am I right? Well...at least I was! Lexington has an abundance of good Mexican restaurants but Papi's is now at the top of the list! We were promptly greeted and seated on the patio with dog in tow. When we ordered our drinks the manager also sent out a bowl of water for our dog. I am a huge Mole fan, and I think their neighbors at El Charro had the best in town, but WOW! Papi's blew theirs away. I had the Enchiladas Mole with chicken which come with a side of rice and awesome refried beans. My wife ordered the Pastor Tacos and they were delicious as well. The service was top notch and the manager is super friendly with a great personality. I'm here at least once every couple of weeks and the food is usually top tier. Today though our queso was extremely thin. They added so much milk to the queso that it wouldn't even stay on the chip. The queso here is usually thick and delicious. When we asked the waiter about why it was so thin, he assured us that it was fresh, which was not the concern. We know it's fresh but they just added a bunch of milk to make the queso go further. It seems cheap and the waiter was not helpful in making the experience better than when we voiced our concerns. Also had to wait forever and a day for more chips. Taking my business to hacienda in Brannon crossing next time... queso and food is ALWAYS good there. read more

I waited to write my first review because if I based my experience off of that night I don't think it would have been fair, and I likely wouldn't have been back. I went a second time to pick up lunch. I had a much better experience and what I think would be a more accurate representation of the service you can expect at Papis. I was greeted on the phone and in the restaurant by a very pleasant and polite young man. I got a lunch special that was ready in 15 minutes, delicious, cheap (less than $10) and a sizable portion. I ordered the lunch enchiladas which comes with two and I always get verde sauce. Delicious! Comes with rice and beans. I also ordered a chicken taco. My family and my favorite Mexican restaurant in town by far. Almost always get great service from the very friendly employees. Salsa and chips are excellent and so is the queso to start. Probably several other excellent starters as well, but that is our families go to. The margaritas are very good as well, but a touch pricey. I was noticing that sometimes my food wasn't coming out to as hot temperature wise as I would have liked it so I request it be hot and every single time since l have requested this they have done an awesome job in accommodating this request. Marcos the owner is very present at this location and is super nice to all the guests. Great employees and great ownership leads to great guest experiences and Papi's proves this. Absolutely wonderful! It's going to be a sad day when the rest of the fountains development is finished and we can't get a table here. This was our first time at Papi's. As California transplants we often find it challenging to locate strong flavors in local Mexican cuisine. This is not the case here. My wife had the Barbacoa de Res (slow cooked beef) and I had the Tampiquena (skirt steak). Both were packed with flavor! The pico de gallo served with the meal was so fresh and flavorful. Even the ground beef in our kids taco was seasoned to perfection. I'm seriously considering ordering a ground beef entree for lunch in the coming days. Ambiance is fun and the layout is open. The bar is decent sized and there are plenty of screens to catch a game. Patio seating is covered and very nice (not just thrown together like some places). Our server was incredibly busy but made the time to tend to us and my needy children wanting to talk about Pokémon. Food and drink service was impeccable as they utilized an "all hands on deck" mentality. We saw many people taking care of patrons and were not disappointed with the service. Hopefully you have a great experience like we did. Should the service fall short of your expectations, do me a favor and r-e-l-a-x. Absolutely delicious food. I've had the regular elote and it was fantastic. Creamy and not overly spicy. Their guacamole is smooth overall with a few small chunks of avocado and slightly spicy. This was our first time coming here and sadly we will not be back. Salsa, guacamole, and queso were very good....but those are something you can't really mess up. The waitress came over right when we sat down and we ordered drinks right away (draft beer and their skinny margarita). Waitress came back and we ordered the elotes, which was just alright, nothing special. We then ordered our food. The drinks we ordered way before our food still hadn't came. I watched the bartender put our drinks on the bar and the waitress did not get our drinks until I said something AFTER our food was brought out. The margarita was really good but the draft beer was warm, obviously because it was sitting on the bar for so long. We were also not impressed by the food. I got the chicken tacos al carbon fajita style and my boyfriend got the enchiladas. The food was not seasoned at all. I broke apart my tacos to try the chicken and it was very bland so was the beef in the enchiladas. We asked for a side of sour cream 3 times and we never received it but was still on our check. Overall, the place has a really good atmosphere and would MAYBE go back for the skinny margarita and chips but otherwise we will not be back. read more
