Ive made several stops into Pappys and I have never been disappointed. This is a 50's-ish style diner, but tucked strangely into an indoor mall, out of sight. The portions are large and delicious. Think "the old standards"; eggs Benedict, hash browns, omelets, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, etc... Pappys has ranked as one of the top "greasy spoons" in Oregon. Total old school diner with a 1950's Coca-Cola theme! Loved the setting, it's like being on the set of Happy Days! On a whim we were able to get counter seating on a very busy Saturday morning. Shortly after, the place was absolutely jammed with guests. Couldn't quite figure out who our server was because we had 3 people attending to us at different points, so not quite sure if they serve tables as a team or if that's just how it worked out given the busy pace. It seemed like the cutie pie lady with the purple streak in her hair was our main server and she was sure hustling & handling tons of guests. Pappy came out from the kitchen to say hello & ask if we were first-timers (which we were). He has a Popeye-like presence & funny sense of humor, so his personal touch as the guy who owns the joynt and cooks like a fiend was appreciated. You can just tell this man has poured a lot of heart & soul & sweat into this business. Food-wise my husband enjoyed his Chicken Fried Steak meal. I ordered Eggs Benedict with ham & the eggs were overcooked. Our server warned us of the kitchen's backlog when we ordered, so I didn't feel comfortable returning the eggs knowing the kitchen was slammed. I didn't eat the eggs, but the ham was a huge thick piece (very tasty) & the red potatoes were also very good. I'd definitely like to return on a weekday morning instead of weekend to see if I can have a five-star experience. Pappy's received some very good press & local reviews & that influenced our decision to try it out. Altogether the team held their own & worked their tails off to attend to guests. I tried this place because of a recommendation from a friend. The decor of the restaurant is very cool. The food was nothing special to right home about and was over priced. The waitress we had was a nice lady. But the rest of the staff was slow and seemed like they were forcing there smiles and being fake. Next I will go to Denny's where the food is cheaper and better service. Since I was just visiting the town I will just keep on driving. read more

Although the food is pretty good, we had to decide to stop coming here. At least three times that we went in, we were ignored for up to 30 minutes while the more "regulars" were attended to. If we came IN with regulars we are greeted and helped immediately. It was really frustrating. We wanted to support the local business but it just wasn't worth it. The last time we went in, we finally just decided to get up and leave after 20 minutes of no one acknowledging us. When we did so the waitress, Mike's wife, sarcastically said,"Goodbye!" as if WE had done something wrong. We drove to this place from Gresham because of the good reviews. The people in the restaurant stared at us like we had 2 heads. We we dressed too nice? Did we weigh less than 400lbs? Who knows. The waitress ignored us for 20 minutes before taking our order. Then she served EVERYONE WHO CAME IN AFTER US. People came in, ordered, ate, and left while we waited. Clearly we were being snubbed. One hour later we were served our cold food, ps,we watched to waitress pick up our pancakes with her hands and flip them on the plate. The food was shit. We all ate less than 10% of our meals. My husbands eggs weren't even cooked. I guess this is how you treat people that are not locals, yet you still took our money. Don't go in here if you don't live in Canby, go to Starbucks or McDonalds, the food is better and the service goes without saying. I am so mad that this cost us 60$. read more

This place used to be good, but after a staff change it had really gone down hill. Service is terrible. We went there a week ago and waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order. When they finally did we waited over an hour for our food, then asked a waitress (not ours) to check on our order. She came back and told us that there were 3 more tickets in front of us. At this point 3 of the tables around us that arrived after us had already been served. We got up and left and we will not go back. Avoid this place, It's not worth the aggravation. read more

went to have brunch Sunday morning, I've eaten lunch here a few times, always good. they were busy but a server came to us,i knew what I wanted but my wife wanted a few mins to decide what she wanted, I told the server that she wanted a couple mins but he chose to stand over the top of her and reminded her they closed at 1, it was only 10 30. I ordered sausage and eggs,my wife ordered French toast, when it came there was a hair on my wife's butter, and the sausage I got tasted terrible with a awful seasoning and green peppers mixed in. So with brunch ruined I went up to pay,the server asked if everything was ok,i told him my concerns and was laughed at. told him we would never come back for brunch again and he again laughed at me.Very disappointed...... . read more

My family owns a 50's diner in Southern Oregon. My Dad started our café outside Klamath Falls and my brother now runs the restaurant. Like our family-ran joint, Pappy's is owned and ran by a feisty and mischievous, father and son duo. Coca-Cola, Elvis and Marilyn memorabilia frame the small diner's walls inside a deceiving strip-mall. On an ordinary day, you'd very likely chalk this up to nothing but a little gift shop in a cheesy old-town shopping center. There are virtually no windows, although there's a small one in the doors to the hallway, resembling that of a high school classroom from 1985. The owner is fun and animated in the best of ways. He truly knew many of the patrons by name and made idle chit-chat with Joe-Bob about his Dad's tractor business and Mary-Sue about having to put her mom in a care facility. It genuinely felt as though I was sitting on an episode of Gilmore Girls, while Luke served me cups of coffee with cream and sides of sarcasm, and relayed all the town gossip to me, without my request. He seemed sincerely interested in all of his customers. Asked us where we were from and why the hell we hadn't stopped in long ago since we lived nearby. He told us of his wife passing away and him and his son learning to live without the woman that was his reason for living. Pappy is not his name, nor was it a nickname of his. It is, however, a brand of Whiskey-Bourbon. I'll take a wild guess at Mike's favorite drink of choice... The food was everything I'd come to expect from a diner - hot, fresh, and homemade. So the gravy isn't like your grandma made it...it's certainly the gravy that someone's grandma made. It wasn't 5 stars in the cleanliness department (c'mon, it's two men running the joint), but the food and service is just not what you come across anymore. The personal touch can't be beat. He's just genuine good people and friendly as all hell, but real. Not impersonally/superficially friendly in the least. You can tell he loves & is proud of his place. That really makes a place IMHO. There's great service, then there's the small town feeling of family, and this place brings both to another level. The experience REALLY makes for a good day, and if like me, you're out with someone dear to you... Well, it makes for great memories. I'm so stoked my father and I found "Pappy's" right close in Canby. (I'm living in Molalla at the moment & nothing here compares) All the old type diners have died, but this guy hit the ball out of the park bringing one back. The only thing that could make the place more authentic is if it were built from 3 railroad dining cars. This place truly screams quintessential classic Norman Rockwell old-school DINER once you get inside. It's an intimate atmosphere and nostalgic as all heck. I don't know when the term "greasy spoon" came around... I guess it's just what people call diners now, but the food's not really "greasy"... IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! They even have corn-beef and cabbage soup! I had their Mushroom Swiss Burger with an extra patty topped with sliced Kielbasa (I usually get Bacon on a Mushroom Swiss, but this place offers kielbasa, so I just had to try it. (IT WAS AWESOME!)) & a side of Onion rings too. I can't wait to try his deep-fried mushrooms next. ^_^ This burger was gargantuan and absolutely delicious. The burger patties were cooked PERFECTLY. a touch of pink and flavorful as all heck. The lettuce onions & tomatoes were fresh & crisp as well. This burger was so big that I actually had to eat some of it in pieces to fit it in my mouth. :) They use 1/3-Lb burgers which seem to be great quality, and they don't skimp on ingredients.. Pops had Steak & eggs. The steak was HUGE compaired to any breakfast steak I've ever seen a diner make, and it too was cooked perfectly. Slightly seared just right & cooked to a juicy-tender medium. Unbelievably though, both our meals, even with all the extras on my HUGE burger, the whole order for two including drinks came out to be less than $24.00. For the amount of food we ate, the place was seriously cheaper than McDonalds, I s*** you not. So the food is great, the service is amazing, the decor takes you back, it's totally affordable on a shoestring budget and the personality of the owner (and old-school new-englander who's simply a joy to interact with) tops it off. I swear if I win the lottery I'll spring to build a building out of 3 railroad dining cars for this business just so I could help complete the ultimate dream diner with more exposure so he'd stay packed enough and he'd stay open for dinner.. The current location is a little hidden, so only those who know seem to find it. As it stands though Pappy's totally nailed the TRUE diner already. I mean, you just don't find perfect home style diners like this any more. When Pops and I go out to eat one of us generally pays, while the other tips. Pops paid this time, but we both tipped. The entire meal for 2 was under $24.00 & we tipped $14.00 because we were just so blown away. This is a great place for the family or just a father and son to have breakfast or lunch. I've been here only for lunch. Not exactly a "farm-to-table," Portland-style place, but for what it is, it's pretty good. They cut their French fries themselves, and the fries are delicious. If only they would use better ketchup and condiments. Swap out the corn-syrup-laden Hunt's or Heinz for Portland Ketchup Co., please! Food was terrific, especially the biscuits and gravy, and the chicken fried steak. Big, thick slabs of ham as well! Coffee wasn't great, but that was the only thing less than perfect. Best corned beef hash I've had. Don't let the entrance deceive you. I passed at first, but the barista down the street convinced me to try Pappy's Greasy Spoon instead of the typical panini and latte we see just about everywhere today. Good call. My waiter today is the spitting image of Henry Rollins, but with friendly service instead of a Black Flag. He suggested the corned beef hash or the special sausage patties since they make them in house. I ordered the hash, and he threw in a patty to try. Corned beef hash is typically some kind of mush that resembles dog food with white chewy cubes in it. Not Pappy's. Big chunks of spicy corned beef sit equally amongst a bed of crispy home fried potatoes. The sunny side eggs I ordered sit on top to add a little yolk to the mix. This was more than a meal in itself, but I spared a few crispy potatoes to try the sausage. The cooks apparently sign a non-disclosure agreement on the recipe. The special spice is good enough for regulars to buy uncooked sausage for $5 a pound. Final point to note: the pancake side fills an entire plate for a couple of bucks, and it comes with fresh Marion berry syrup made down the street in true Oregonian style. read more

This place will take you back in time, due to the decor and locals that eat there. It's a little diner located in side a covered mini mall area or market whatever you want to call it. We were well welcomed by the staff, very friendly and attentive. They were cracking jokes with the other customers that were already enjoying their breakfast. You can tell the customers were daily customers. Anyways as for food, we had the chicken friend steak which was pretty good. The gravy was perfect not to salty and didn't have the awful butter/flour taste that some places do. The portions are fairly large, I had my partner in crime help me out lol. The eggs were nice and fully and the bacon was good. My love had eggs Benedict and they were a 3 our of 5 according to him. I didn't try it so I can't elaborate on flavor. Either way the customer service was great, if I'm in town again I'll make sure to stop by! Oh I forgot to mention that the country potatoes were really good! Not to greasy or fried to a crisp!
