I went in to support a local business and the shopkeeper was hospitable and a great salesperson. She explained that their suppliers are local, but some products are made overseas. Still, they have a great selection of clothing, toys, home decor and my favorite, candles and skin products. There is a decent kama'aina discount that helps keep things reasonable.

We went down the "main street" no street lights or anything. Very laid back. They have some small family run restaurants, art galleries, one barber, one auto parts store. Since we went on a Saturday, some of the businesses were closed. We checked out JJ's ohana store, Aloha spice Company, the Hanapepe swinging bridge, and Kauai menehune kitchen to name a few. Also try the taro chips that are a local favorite. We didn't get to try Bobbie's, which was recommended to us by the locals since they close at 2 PM. But if your interested in trying local food, check this place out :) There's also a bakery, local gallery, and other stores to check out. You can even get a haircut here for $10! This small town is worth checking out if you're in the area. And you will be supporting locals :)

Pit stop on the Island of Kauai…read more.. On the way to the Kilauea Lighthouse (on the North Shore of Kauai), my penpal pointed out this landmark. I didn't realize how important it would be later on... Kong Lung Market Center has historic significance to this part of the island. It is about a 40 minute drive from the Lihue Airport...and a longer drive with traffic (especially because many roads are only one lane wide). After visiting the Kilauea Lighthouse, my penpal mentioned Kong Lung Market Center again and pulled into the parking lot. We walked past several vendors and shops (which weren't open yet since it was early morning). Arriving at the one stalled restroom, we took turns using the facility. It's not air conditioned, but it has restroom tissue! I had to be careful where I stepped because previous customers left the floor "wet"... Uhg! At least there was a sink outside - with soap! Yay! I liked this Market Center! I'll read up on its history later! I highly recommend stopping here when you are in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii! There's also a noteworthy exhibit about Hawaii's Plantation Life!
