Poor experience trying to book here- we booked a couples massage for my birthday online. Online they offer a $20 off couples service coupon and on their Yelp they advertise a $55 special for 60 min. After booking I called 2x to confirm as the email says it's just a "request" and they'd confirm with me. They didn't ever confirm and when I called the person answering could not communicate with me at all (no understanding of what I was saying). Nevertheless we showed up on time wondering if we even had an appt. When we got there we confirmed the special pricing and the woman there said their offer on Yelp is 10 years old and the one on their website doesn't exist... even tho it does. Talk about bait & switch. Really disappointing - we left because it was $25 more than advertised. Bad communication bad advertising. Not sure how the reviews are so good here. My wife and I arrived 10 minutes prior to our scheduled massage, and they seemed to have no idea we were coming. They quickly got a room together and pointed us in that direction. Usually when you go to a massage place, there is some type of intake, where you express what your needs are, problem areas, and what type of massage you would like. There was a language barrier, as no one there spoke any English at the time of our arrival--first appointment of the day at 10am--so I guess it wouldn't have mattered anyway. As we got to our room, we passed the bathroom that said "peeing only" scratched onto a piece of paper on the bathroom door--nice touch, and our room was comically gross. I opened a door to a cabinet to place my belongings as there was nowhere else to put our things, and there was an actual cockroach in the drawer! At this point my wife and I were grateful that the room was very dimly lit. As far as the massage, mine was actually okay, not great, but okay, other than the fact that the woman used a metric shit ton of oil, 50% of her strokes were fast and random. I could hear my wife moaning in pain on the bed next to me as she finally asked the person massaging her (I'm intentionally not using the term therapist as her person seemed to be new at best) if she was ever going to use hot stones as she had requested--the gal did quickly jump off her back and oblige her as best as she could. My massage person finished me off by putting my right shoulder into a jiujitsu hold, at which point I had to verbally submit; and to her credit, she honored my submission and let me go. Somehow this place is still in business at arguably one of the most desirable locations/storefronts on the planet, literally! Not that I wish ill on anyone ever, but I say it's time for this place to be no more; perhaps Laguna Beach will do a little investigating and SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN. Also, our massage was 15 minutes shorter than it was supposed to be, which my wife and I didn't complain about because of how terrible of an experience it was. read more

I've walked past this establishment the many times I peruse my neighborhood. The reviews were surprisingly good so I gave it a try when my usual spot was fully booked. And sure enough, I was again taught the lesson whenever I stray from my favorites, to: NEVER AGAIN. My session not only started out sloppy but ended with near assault. If this doesn't sound appealing to you, please be warned and do not book ALBERT. Since this was the last appointment of the day, my partner and I made sure to comply with all registration requirements online, including medical questionnaire, to ensure maximum time getting pampered. Little did I know this was not going to be that kind of experience. We arrived ten minutes ahead of schedule and while checking in, it was clear they hadn't expected us. They asked all the questions we answered online from the type of massage to duration, hurriedly prepared a room, and asked for the medical questionnaire to be completed. We can understand it's been a long day and went along, exercising patience when asked a third time to fill out the medical questionnaire. When the two therapists rushed into the room, I once again reiterated our needs and emphasized my preference for strong hands while my partner can only do light pressure. And so I got Albert. He smiled and offered, "Thank you so much," but not before commenting in his native tongue to his co-worker and laughing as he repeated 'strong hands' more than once. We had signed up for Thai/Swedish and it started out Thai-ish with the bending of the legs and walking on them while I was face down. Firm pressure was applied but no stretching, muscle kneading or pressure point manipulations were involved. It quickly transitioned to a lazy kind of Swedish massage where it felt like someone impatiently applying lotion. There was hardly any compression with strokes fleeting and barely stimulating or invigorating. Then came the hot rocks. While I appreciate this technique when done right, it just sounded like someone playing marbles on my back. This room already offered enough sound effects from the squeaky table to the plastic sound of appliances. When he got to my legs once again, he spent more time fingering between my toes. Usually with the toes, I'm accustomed to the pulling, bending, spreading of toes, pressure applied with thumbs, knuckle to the top and bottom of foot and heel, but never in my years of receiving massages have I experienced someone enthusiastically inserting their finger between my toes and too long for my comfort. I lost patience at this point because it was NOT what I was expecting and now, bordering on creepy. When I heard the rocks again being placed on my leg, I interrupted the massage to ask for more deep tissue. Albert politely acknowledged my request, put away the rocks and went right into using his hands again. It was more pressure than he had started out with but I liked it better than the listless approach. From this point on, the massage was no longer to be about what I liked or preferred. When it was time to lie face up and cover my eyes, he did so by pulling both sides of the fabric and bringing it down hard on my face so that my nose was pressed against my face for a shocking moment. When he placed his fingers across my neck after vigorously targeting my shoulders, he stayed very close to my throat as he tightly clamped his hands around my neck. When he walked on my legs, he made sure to dig his heels into my calves. This is standard practice but therapists are mindful of proper alignment. Albert did everything he could to deliver discomfort and pain. Towards the end, when you would sit up and wind down with stretches, pulling, rocking and various joint movements, he employed only a couple of stretch techniques and did so with brute force. I didn't feel relaxed or relieved, I felt spite and anger...from Albert. We went from creepy to aggression. I hope Albert understands that being a massage therapist involves a code of ethics to provide care with integrity, respect and professionalism. The message Albert sent cutting the massage short after terrorizing my body was anything but care, integrity, respect, and professionalism. In a space where one is expected to surrender to ultimate relaxation, relying on my own physical finesse to reel in my arms as they were violently stretched was the last thing I was hoping to do. I don't know that many women would have the strength to resist such brutality. It's for those women that I write this brutally honest account of my experience here at Parani Thai. I was sore yesterday which is why we went in for a massage while also hoping to discover a new local favorite. Instead the only thing triggered was Albert's bruised ego. And as I sit here with a throbbing collarbone and elbow, I will exercise my voice once again, as I did lying naked and vulnerable on that table. It was a terrible massage. Dirty place, saw a cockroach and the toilet was broken. Nobody asked what type of massage I wanted and when I volunteered "hot stone", they did not seem to know what that was even though it's on their menu. Had an appointment but when I arrived they seemed confused about that and nothing was on their books. The person massaging me seemed to have little to no training and did just...the worst job ever. She doused me in oil, and gave little pressure in the spots that matter (like shoulders and back), and weirdly deep massage on places (like the balls of my feet-ouch). I I don't recommend this place and I only say this because although the massage was very good, they are shady. They charged $100 for the massage and cut us 15 minutes short my cousin and I went there and both looked at the clock and it was 15 minutes after the time we were supposed to be getting, so I thought of course they're going to finish at that time when they finished. I looked at the clock and it was only 45 minutes. I get massages a lot and I have never experienced this not only was that a disappointment, but when we went to leave and pay, they said that they would not except our $10 tip that they only except $15 or more. They told me that everybody says OK to this for me. I don't think this is right they should just make their price 115 if that's what they are going to do, there were cockroaches on the wall five of them. I saw my cousin and I are pretty grossed out. I'm sorry to do this. I never leave bad reviews but this was so horrible other than a massage. It was horrible. The owner should be ashamed and should not be allowed to do this to people of course people feel pressured at the very end like what are you going to do when you're confronted like that and expect you to pay more than you expected and be shorted your time please be advised thank you. I haven't been for a massage in many years but really had some tight knots in my neck and shoulder caused by too much computer work sitting on the couch that resulted in tendonitis pain, so I finally made the appointment yesterday. "Anyone can slather you in oil and rub your muscles for an hour, but that doesn't mean you call it a massage." This was the first thing my bf said to me after leaving this place and stepping out on the street after our couples' massage. I couldn't have agreed more with that assessment. Seriously perplexed at all the reviews, since this was quite honestly the WORST massage I've ever received. Repetitive motions for minutes on end, targeting no particular muscles at all... I even had to stop my masseuse halfway through to tell her to switch to Thai since she clearly had no idea how to do Swedish. Even then, her Thai consisted of the same 2 stretches and cracking my toes 5 times. Why????? My bf had a similar experience with his massage. So... save your money and go elsewhere. I can think of a million more fun ways to burn $120 for 2 people. A massage here is not one of them!!! read more
