During a recent anniversary night trip to Laguna Beach, I wanted to surprise my wife with a couples massage and quickly came across Spa Del Rio and their spectacular reviews and they definitely lived up to the expectations I had. The ladies who run the place were all super sweet and attentive and we were even surprised by a Happy Anniversary sign outside prior to entry. Everything from the smooth check-in process, to the couples massage room, to the massages themselves and even the post massage mimosas on the upstairs deck was top notch (something I wasn't expecting when my wife told me she had ordered us mimosas) I could not have asked for a better start to this amazing night trip. I had been to a massage parlor in the past and it was not the experience I had hoped for and this place definitely changed my views on what a professional massage should be. My wife was genuinely happy for the great experience and to see her happy and satisfied with the massage makes me happy as well. I struggle with this review because I think a lot of my negatives are because I just had different expectations than what this place has to offer. Maybe I should've called ahead to confirm some things before setting up an appt. I was looking for someplace to really, really treat myself for my bday (was thinking otherwise about going to Spa Montage) and saw all the rave 5-star reviews and how people felt so relaxed after being here. But...that wasn't my takeaway. First of all, this spa has NO amenities - no locker room, no showers, no sauna, no private waiting area where you drink tea or have snacks, etc. You probably won't even be offered a robe, or have need to wear one. This is basically a small, service-based place only. You get in, have your service, and get out. Which is TOTALLY FINE if that's what you're looking for. For me, it makes it lack the "pampered" feeling entirely. It is a very small spot in a very old wooden building where you can hear the squeaking steps of the people in the unit next door. You can also hear all the conversations of people checking in because it's literally happening steps outside the door of your massage room (but there won't be a lot since the place is so small, they can't have many customers at the same time). That kind of took me out of the experience. There's a single toilet bathroom. I arrived for my massage and the front desk wished me a happy birthday, which was nice as I did include that as a note in my booking that I was treating myself to a massage for my milestone birthday. I arrived 15 minutes prior to my appt time. They put me in the massage room and told me to undress and get on the table. I do think my masseuse started a little early and gave me a couple of extra minutes of massage, which was very nice of her. I got a 100 minute deep tissue massage, partly because in the past Swedish massages just feel like someone petting me, and also because their description online stated it was ideal for people who are at their computer all day. But if I had to do it again, I would get the efflorescence massage. My masseuse had VERY strong hands. It was too strong for me with multiple moments of me grimacing to get through it and I did have to ask her to go lighter throughout, which she did for a while. I still ended up with a good amount of bruising down my back, neck, arms and legs that made me feel like I was whipped for a couple days after, and that was quite painful and not something I was expecting. My husband jokingly asked me if I got into a fight, but it was a bit shocking as I don't typically bruise easily. I googled it and I guess bruising can be common after a deep tissue massage. Again, this is something that is probably on me for not researching properly and not going for the other type of massage. But if you are someone that wants that level of deep body work, this is the place for it! She was obviously impressive in that she could maintain that level of pressure consistently for such a long 100 min massage. Once I the massage was done, it was very much a "ok, when you're ready, just put your clothes back on and go out the door to pay." Which is TOTALLY FINE but not what I was expecting after seeing photos of people getting mimosas and charcuterie boards. I think the masseuse did exactly what she was supposed to, in that she gave a very strong deep tissue massage. The place was clean and everyone was professional. I guess I was just disappointed because I didn't feel like I was pampering myself at all, I felt like I was getting a more medical service type of massage. I hemmed and hawed on this, but I would tell my friends that this was a 3/5 for me, so I'll rate it as such here. But again - staff were professional, place was clean, masseuse clearly had strong hands - all good things! If you don't need amenities as part of your experience, I do recommend this place. read more
